>> reporter: you don't hang ten on waves this big. 50-foot waves are way out of my league. maybe 10 or 12 on a good day. but no contests, but the crowds were here. you wouldn't know the mavericks contest has been called off from next year from the surfers catching massive waves, the crowds on shore getting too close and the photographers perched on the bluffs with their long lenses. they were all here to see this, waves with 30 foot, 40 foot, 50 foot faces. >> once you're committed, there's no turning back. it's like your worst nightmare and a dream come true at the same time. it's awesome. >> reporter: luka is here on his 17th birthday. he first surfed mavericks at 13. >> i'm hoping today is the day i'll have the biggest wave of my life. >> reporter: some of the waves were so big, they left unridden.

conditions were too big in this particular case to hold the mavericks contest. can you elaborate on -- is it just too dangerous because of this particular break? give us some insight, please. >> reporter: it wasn't just too big, larry, it was also the contest window. they need a solid eight hours of pretty good conditions for all th different heats, and this year, you have women who are competing. so you need eight hours of clean conditions. the other thing is the wind was changing a lot today. so for one minute you would see it glassed off. and then the wind would change on shore. and it would chop up and the surfers were having a harder time handling the surface of the wave. so it was the changing wind condition. they could have handled the size, i think. >> dan noyes reporting. thanks so much. you have to be fearless to ride these waves. >> a special breed. those waves are exciting to look
