good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm kristen sze. the family is doing everything it can to get the mother here to say goodbye to her son in person. >> the little boy is at children's hospital in oakland. laura anthony is there live tonight with the story. laura? >> reporter: they said they know what they have to do, that is turn off life support. but they are still holding out hope that this boy's mother will be allowed to come here before it's too late. >> my wife is calling me every day, wanting to kiss and hold her son. >> reporter: he knows there's little time left for his young son, abdullah, who turned 2 years od two days ago while on life support at children's hospital. all ali wants now is for his wife to be able to say goodbye to their son. >> time's running out. please help us get my family

together again. >> reporter: ali husan is from stockton but returned to the bay area in august to seek medical care for his son. ali and abdullah are naturalized u.s. citizens. along with his father. >> our decision is to see if we can get his mom out of the country to see him for the last time, at least to hug and kiss him goodbye. >> reporter: the boy's mother is a yemeni national living in egypt. so far, because of president trump's travel ban, the u.s. state has not granted her a waiver. >> we asked the embassy to expedite the process of obtaining a waiver to the ban. we asked for humanitarian parole. so we're doing our diligence as fast as we can. >> reporter: a state department official would not comment on the specific case, but in a written statement told "abc7 news" the departent of state makes every effort to facilitate

legitimate travel by visitors. applicants who are ineligible to receive a visa may amy for humanitarian parole from the department of homeland security. while they wait, the family has been able to work with doctors at children's hospital to keep abdullah on life support, for at least a little while longer. >> it's just the last wish for the moth tore see and hold him, that's her last wish to do. >> reporter: now, late today, the hospital offered us a statement on abdullah's situation. they say it supports the family's efforts to reunite to bring the mother here. in the meantime, doctors and nurses here are doing everything they can to keep the child comfortable and support the family through this difficult time. in oakland, laura anthony, "abc7 news." >> laura, thank you very much. an oakland man and accused i.c. isis supporter was supposed to be sentenced today.

melanie woodrow has the very latest on this. melanie? >> reporter: absolutely. the sentencing has been continued until january 8th. that's when we expect to potentially hear from two informants who will testify prior to sentencing. the courtroom was filled with his family and friends, and for much of the day, we heard from a forensic psychiatrist who testified that he was exaggerated and bragging in a chat room saying that he was all talk and no action. his attorney says he's known as the terrorist in jail. a moniker the berkeley high school graduate didn't give himself and he doesn't use. in july, he pleaded guilty to attempting to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization and to identify theft charges. on day one of his hearing, his attorneys question a forensic psychiatrist, who testified he

wasn't a terrorist, but a troll who was vulgar, trolling women and his talk about bombs and detonators was filled with sexual innuendo. the judge says, then why commit to the next stop? he met with an undercover agent, but the psychiatrist testified that he drew the line at pledging allegiance to a terrorist organization. during cross-examination of the psychiatrist, prosecutors played audio from his meeting with the undercover agent. in it, he talked about bombing nightclubs, including city nights in san francisco, saying "they're all so crowded. it doesn't matter which one hit. and he named potential targets. ad suggested setting up a fake modeling agency to draw in and kill women. and his family did not speak after court today, but they did

put out a statement through a communication spokesperson that reads, in part, amir is not a terrorist or a violent person, although he said many terrible things on the internet. he did not commit a violent act. he knows now that this was wrong and is sorry to have caused so much trouble. the judge said today in court, in his 21 years, this is the most dramatic sentencing he will have seen in terms of what was said, done, and the potential sentence could be. live in san francisco, melanie woodrow, "abc7 news." >> melanie, thank you. in the east bay, a student was arrested for bringing a knife to school. a fellow student shot this video this morning of police taking the 14-year-old boy into custody. the student also had a liquid acid that could cause an explosion. no one was hurt and the incident

remains under investigation. police say the man whose gun went off at sun valley mall is a california department of corrections and rehabilitation employee. the bullet hit the counter of a stand at sun valley, causing some damage. police say the cdc was legally carrying the weapon. he left before the officers got to the mall. in santa rosa today, a step forward for residents of a mobile home park that has been left behind due to red tape and insurance complications. wayne freedman is live from journey's end, in santa rosa tonight. wayne? >> this is the noble home park that has never beenib iblable te up to that name. residents have lived in motels and trailers. but they did get some good news today.

stimson beach is open this hour. earlier, a bus became wedged under fallen trees. the bus driver tried to geez past but it went off the road and came stuck in a ditch. there was one passenger aboard the bus. a passer by gave her a ride to the beach. a large tree came down this morning in lafayette, blocking st. mary's road. laura that you mean to worked to clear the roadway. while we're talking about mishaps, we're learning how much'9" cost to fix the damage after a ferryboat hit a dock in san francisco. it rammed into a peer while docking. last mob's crash injured two of the passengers on board. a coast guard investigator is still working to find exactly

there's a high surf warninn. >> sky 7 was over mavericks earlier today. the water outside pillar point harbor was filled with surfers. and on the bluffs nearby, dozens of photographers capturing the incredible moments on the waves. >> among them, reporter dan noyes, a resident surfer by the way, is live at half moon bay tonight. hi, dan. >> reporter: dan and kristen, the sun is setting on an epic day here at mavericks, the biggest swell in almost a decade. the conditions weren't quite right, though, for a contest. you wouldn't know the mavericks contest has been called off until next year. the crowds on shore are getting

a little too close to the water and the photographers perched on the bluff with their long lenses, all here to see this, waves with 30 foot, 40, 50 foot faces. >> once you're committed, there's no turning back. you're 100% going for it. i like to describe it as your worst nightmare and a dream come true at the same time. >> reporter: luka is here on his 17th birthday. he first surfed mavericks at 13. >> i am hoping today is the day of the biggest wave of my life. >> reporter: the big bombs passed 60 feet. the usual flotilla of boats was not allowed out, including one i planned to take. the waves are spilling into the channel that is normally calm enough for the boats to take. >> today, getting there with our channel entrance and the size of the swell today is very difficult and there are breaking waves in the channel. >> reporter: dangerous for the surfers. we saw one wipeout where a

surfer came so close to the rocks. the safety crews had a hard time finding him, but he's safe. mason came up from southern california just for this, says he caught three good waves using a jet ski to tow in. >> i got lucky. a couple guys that tefell and g pushed to the rocks, which is a worst case scenario. >> reporter: ely olson came from hawaii to surf the big swell. he's wearing an automatic flotation device. >> these things are just saving everyone's life. everyone has either flotation or a full vest. i wear both. say you get knocked out and you don't have time to pull your vest, i'm going to come up regardless. >> reporter: for the contest, they need eight straight hours

amazon tops the news in consumer news today. >> michael finney is here to explain. >> you can order just about anything on amazon, but could that soon change? amazon is pushing some of the brands on its website to make changes. right now. order up some pancakes. this is national maple syrup day. vermont is the largest producer of maple syrup in the united states. it takes about 40 gallons of maple sap to make one gallon of syrup. much of the syrup you see in grocery stores is maple flavored syrup. some have no maple in them whatsoever. seriously, none at all. and it will say pancake, anything but maple now. read the label. >> you know what was kristen sze's first story ever? the maple syrup harvest in binghamton, new york. saw the sap come out of the tree and everything. >> thank you very much, michael. it may be time to hit the slopes. this was taken today from 30,000 feet on a flight from oakland to las vegas.

>> that is stunning. now to the weather. good evening, everyone. they did receive several inches of snow in the sierra. let's turn our attention to the waves that are pounding the coast right now. high surf warning remains in effect until 9:00 p.m. tonight. take a look at the current swells. talking 23 feet in half moon bay. monterey bay, those breakers, 25 to 40 feet. so definitely be careful along the coastline. those waves will start to subside as we head into the overnight hours and tomorrow we'll see the wave heights coming down. tomorrow afternoon, about 10, 15 feet. and then pick up, a moderate swell expected later this week. this is one of the largest swells of the season so far, and dangerous, as well.

live doppler 7 hd, tracking a few showers up to the north. radar around ft. ross, ft. ross, road. most of the activity will stay as the system is pushing into the pacific northwest, bringing snow in the northern california mountains and here we'll keep in the chance of a few showers going into tomorrow. on the topic of rain, let's talk about the 48-hour totals. 0.9 in oakland. 0.88 in san jose. c about 0.6 of an inch in half moon bay. so that level two storm brought us a soaker. is this gorgeous or what? 57 in the city and 55 in half moon bay. lovely view as we look towards the cloud bank.

57 in san rafel. concord, 59 degrees and the night sky from our emeryville camera, the last glimpse of the setting sun. height showers in the north. and the next chance of showers thursday night. tomorrow morning when you get going, allow that extra time for the commute. it is going to be foggy and dense in spots. upper 30s to 40s. let's start with the hour by hour forecast. during the morning, fog, 5:00 a.m. a few drops around the north bay. 9:00 a.m., some of those showers slipping into santa rosa. if you're going to be in the north bay, make sure you have your umbrella in the afternoon and evening. the rest of you seeing some sun and then clearing at night. so let's look at the rainfall totals. nothing for everyone except the north bay. you'll see less than a tenth of an inch by tomorrow night.

a san jose airport experts to set a new record for passengers during a year. that works out to 14.3 million passengers flying through san jose in 2018. this year's growth in traffic

will pass oakland as the bay area's second busiest airport. san jose follows closely behind with non-stops to 55 destinations. a deer poacher must watch "bambie" as part of his punishment. david berry, jr., was arrested by police in missouri for illegally killing hundreds of deer. a judge sentenced him to jail time of one year, and he must watch the disney classic at least once a month. there's a famous scene bammybam by's mother is shot and killed. they shot the deer for their heads, leaving the bodies to rot. in maryland, this animal was rescued from a flooded pasture. the fire department posted this picture. as you can imagine, it's getting a lot of attention and reaction on the social media.
