live where you live, this is "abc7 news." >> it is extremely difficult and horrendous and scary for a lot of people. >> it's a move that is striking fear into a thriving community into the south bay. the trump administration wants to deport certain vietnamese refugees back to their home country. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm kristen sze. the vietnamese community in san jose is one of the largest in the community, but a new policy could force some to leave the only home they've ever known. >> our reporte is live in the south bay with details tonight. amanda? >> reporter: dan, kristen, an agreement largely protected

vietnamese immigrants who came into the country before 1995. but it's the unknown that have people fearing what might happen next. the country's second little saigon is right here in san jose, home to 120,000 vietnamese refugees. >> people risked their life leaving the country for freedom and democracy and we thought we have a home. >> reporter: he is a refugee and came to the u.s. in 1975, long before president george bush signed an agreement protecting immigrants who arrived before 1995 from deportation. now the trump administration is taking another look at the agreement, with plans to allow the removal of refugees who arrived before 1995, and have criminal convictions. >> to pick everything up all over again, that's quite unjust.

>> reporter: danny says about a dozen families have reached out to his group. they are co-sponsoring this petition to the department of homeland security. dhs reports more than 7,000 vietnamese immigrants with past criminal convictions have final orders of removal. >> they have lived here for over 20 years. a lot of them come here as young adults, young children. >> reporter: the councilman says a close relative was convicted oh of a crime decades ago. he argues his relative is no longer a criminal but a community member. >> for the past 30 something years, he's a productive member of society. >> reporter: beyond that petition, the council member, mayor and other city leaders have signed letters to the president against the deportations or the potential of them i should say. in san jose, "abc7 news."

the waves were just what surfers wanted to see. there was a large crowd off the coast of mavericks looking for the ride of their life. it was a different story at ocean beach. signs warned visitors of potential visitor and to stay off the beach. "abc7 news" surf iing guru gurur noyes went there. >> reporter: you wouldn't know the mavericks contest has been called off until next year. the crowds on shore are getting a little too close to the water and the photographers perched on the bluff with their long lenses. they were all here to see this, waves with 30 foot, 40 foot, 50-foot faces. >> once you're committed, there's no turning back. you're 100% going for it. it's like your worst nightmare and a dream come true at the same time. it's awesome. >> reporter: luka is here on his

17th birthday. he first surfed mavericks at 13. >> i'm hoping today is the day to paddle the biggest wave of my length. >> reporter: surfers say the big bombs passed 60 feet. the usual flotilla of boats was not allowed out. the waves are spilling into the channel that is normally calm enough for the boats. >> today, get thing with our cham entrance and the size of the swell is very difficult and there are breaking waves in the channel. >> reporter: we saw one wipeout where a surfer came so close to the rocks and the safety crews had a hard time finding him, but he's safe. mason barnes came up from southern california just for this and says he caught three good waves juicing a je to go in. >> there's some carnage going on.

everyone is still in one piece, so -- >> repter: the contest needs eight straight hours of waves to get through all the waves. dan noyes, "abc7 news." >> the waves have been exciting to watch, but sandhya patel has been monitoring the conditions all day. sandhya, what can we expect for tomorrow? >> yeah, we're still looking at rough surf for tomorrow. i want to show you the wave heights, the high surf advisory in effect until 5:00 p.m. tomorrow. breakers could be 20 to 30 feet. bodega bay, 20 foot waves right now. overall, the decreased, but tomorrow, the waive heights come down 10 to 15 feet tomorrow afternoon. and then another ripple of energy comes our way wednesday night. those waves will be building again, but nowhere near the kind of heights that we're seeing now where we saw earlier in the
