live where you live, this is "abc7 news." >> it is extremely difficult and horrendous and scary for a lot of people. >> it's a move that is striking fear into a thriving community into the south bay. the trump administration wants to deport certain vietnamese refugees back to their home country. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm kristen sze. the vietnamese community in san jose is one of the largest in the community, but a new policy could force some to leave the only home they've ever known. >> our reporte is live in the south bay with details tonight. amanda? >> reporter: dan, kristen, an agreement largely protected

vietnamese immigrants who came into the country before 1995. but it's the unknown that have people fearing what might happen next. the country's second little saigon is right here in san jose, home to 120,000 vietnamese refugees. >> people risked their life leaving the country for freedom and democracy and we thought we have a home. >> reporter: he is a refugee and came to the u.s. in 1975, long before president george bush signed an agreement protecting immigrants who arrived before 1995 from deportation. now the trump administration is taking another look at the agreement, with plans to allow the removal of refugees who arrived before 1995, and have criminal convictions. >> to pick everything up all over again, that's quite unjust.

>> reporter: danny says about a dozen families have reached out to his group. they are co-sponsoring this petition to the department of homeland security. dhs reports more than 7,000 vietnamese immigrants with past criminal convictions have final orders of removal. >> they have lived here for over 20 years. a lot of them come here as young adults, young children. >> reporter: the councilman says a close relative was convicted oh of a crime decades ago. he argues his relative is no longer a criminal but a community member. >> for the past 30 something years, he's a productive member of society. >> reporter: beyond that petition, the council member, mayor and other city leaders have signed letters to the president against the deportations or the potential of them i should say. in san jose, "abc7 news."

>> amanda, thank you very much. >> if you would like to read the chan change.org petition in its entirety, go to abc7news.com. there's a push to ex-me fit a humanitarian visa request so a mother can see her dying son in oakland. 2-year-old abdullah suffers from a jeanetgenetic brain conditions on life support at children's hospital. he and his father are u.s. citizens and came to the bay area in august. abdullah's mother is from yemen and she's been denied a visa because of president trump's travel ban. >> as a family, we want to be together. i want her to see her son for the last time. just tell him goodbye. >> congresswoman barbara lee tweeted she's working hard to reunite them. she calls the travel ban un-american. the high surf warning for the bay area has been knocked down to an advisory.

the waves were just what surfers wanted to see. there was a large crowd off the coast of mavericks looking for the ride of their life. it was a different story at ocean beach. signs warned visitors of potential visitor and to stay off the beach. "abc7 news" surf iing guru gurur noyes went there. >> reporter: you wouldn't know the mavericks contest has been called off until next year. the crowds on shore are getting a little too close to the water and the photographers perched on the bluff with their long lenses. they were all here to see this, waves with 30 foot, 40 foot, 50-foot faces. >> once you're committed, there's no turning back. you're 100% going for it. it's like your worst nightmare and a dream come true at the same time. it's awesome. >> reporter: luka is here on his

17th birthday. he first surfed mavericks at 13. >> i'm hoping today is the day to paddle the biggest wave of my length. >> reporter: surfers say the big bombs passed 60 feet. the usual flotilla of boats was not allowed out. the waves are spilling into the channel that is normally calm enough for the boats. >> today, get thing with our cham entrance and the size of the swell is very difficult and there are breaking waves in the channel. >> reporter: we saw one wipeout where a surfer came so close to the rocks and the safety crews had a hard time finding him, but he's safe. mason barnes came up from southern california just for this and says he caught three good waves juicing a je to go in. >> there's some carnage going on.

everyone is still in one piece, so -- >> repter: the contest needs eight straight hours of waves to get through all the waves. dan noyes, "abc7 news." >> the waves have been exciting to watch, but sandhya patel has been monitoring the conditions all day. sandhya, what can we expect for tomorrow? >> yeah, we're still looking at rough surf for tomorrow. i want to show you the wave heights, the high surf advisory in effect until 5:00 p.m. tomorrow. breakers could be 20 to 30 feet. bodega bay, 20 foot waves right now. overall, the decreased, but tomorrow, the waive heights come down 10 to 15 feet tomorrow afternoon. and then another ripple of energy comes our way wednesday night. those waves will be building again, but nowhere near the kind of heights that we're seeing now where we saw earlier in the

fooled. >> the huge scam of e-cigarettes is they're promoted as a way to quit, but they make it harder. >> reporter: he says products like san francisco based jewel are incredibly addictive and particularly appealing to teens. the sleek design, similar to a usb drive, make it easy to drive. the technology makes the smell of secondhand smoke less notice my. >> by putting acid in it, they make it easier to inhail the nicotine and deliver a harder hit. >> reporter: new research says the percentage of 12th graders who say they had vaped nicotine in the past 30 days has nearly doubled. >> this is a very big problem, because kid's brains are still developing and nick nene nicotine rewires their brains. >> reporter: in november, the

company shut down their facebook page and instagram account. san francisco is leading the nation in combatting teen vaping and voted to ban the sale of flavored tobacco products. in san francisco, katie utehs, "abc7 news." developing news now, two chicago police officers were hit and killed by a train tonight. officials say they were checking on a report of shots fired near the train tracks. the pair apparently followed a suspect up to the tracks when they were struck. chicago's mayor says both officers were fathers of young children. new here at 11:00 p.m., a chp officer killed on christmas eve last year in hayward was remembered tonight by his colleagues. >> he loved what he did for a living. >> a vigil for the officer took place at the chp office in hayward. they were parked along the shoulder of i-880 looking for

100,000 synchronized lights, a video santa display, and snow that you can set your watch to. sounds like the set of a hollywood christmas movie perhaps, but it's not. it's here, as reporter kate larson is about to show you, it's an ordinary home in santa rosa, owned by an extraordinary family with a lot of heart.

>> reporter: a high tech light display has people packed on a sidewalk for a christmas show that's too bright to miss. >> this house is the most amazing house every year. there's nothing like it. >> the music, the tree, everything there. it's so amazing. >> reporter: the lights come on every night from 5:00 to 10:00 until new year's day. and every ten minutes, there's a scented snow flurry. >> if you're not sure how to get here, hop on rosy the trolly that shows up about every night. the driveway snowball fights are made possible by the miller family who are hosting the show for the eighth year in a row. >> it takes about two months to set up. >> reporter: the light show is free, but nathan says people wanted to pay. >> the first year we had people giving us hundred dollar bills saying this is for your electric bill. it goes up about 1200 $1300. >> reporter: they decided to pay the donations forward to a santa

it was just absolutely beautiful and colorful as you will notice there. but you notice fog creeping in there, that's what we need to watch out for. live doppl 7 hd showing you where the fog is sitting. it's thick in napa and santa rosa. dense fog, quarter mile visibility. tomorrow morning when you get going, here is what you need to watch out for, that fog, low visibility if your driving. if you are walking, some foggy yast. here's a look at the temperatures in the 40s, 50s. we had a good soaking in the last 48 hours with some rain coming through a level two storm. right now, low level moisture is causing that fog to form. areas of dense fog for the morning commute, just sprinkles or a light shower, our next chance of showers will be thursday afternoon, evening. first thing in the morning, allow that extra time, your

morning commute could be slower because it is going to be thick. upper thirties to the low 50s for your temperatures. fog around parts of the bay, the north bay, the east bay. as you look at the hour by hour forecast, 5:00 a.m., that fog will be around, it's still around at 10:00 a.m. high clouds start to move in, and some moisture in the form of a few showers at 10:00 a.m., mainly in the north bay. it's not a game changer, 1:30 in the afternoon, just have your umbrellas handy. north bay, a mix of sun and clouds. so highs for your tuesday will look like this. anywhere from the 50s to the 60s with a mix of the sun and clouds except in the north bay. december 20th, a lot of people are traveling thursday, 7:00 a.m., rain to the north. thursday afternoon and evening, it slides across the bay area, and snow in the mountains. the next storm is christmas eve. that one is going to spread warm moisture across the region. christmas day looks okay. december 26th in the bay area, a
