royal baby. abc's janai norman is here with more. good morning, janai. >> reporter: good morning. so, we've heard that meghan could be receiving her first patronage from the queen sometime next year and this morning we get a look at what they could look like. meghan markle is stepping out and filling some very big shoes. the duchess of sussex is visiting a charity on behalf of the queen, meeting some elder by residents and carols around a christmas tree at the nursing home for the royal variety charity. this just a day after her father thomas markle made headlines speaking out about his relationship with his royal daughter. >> i've reached out to her and i need her to reach back to me. i love her very much. >> there's b rnon ioctea course, from meghan or from ken thomas markle interview. they have never commented on any of the interviews he's given before so it's not something that they're going to start doing. >> reporter: but this morning all eyes are on meghan. this particular charity being one that the queen herself is a patron. >> i think we can expect to see

new mom casey gorham said she first noticed her son was having problems gaining weight two weeks after birth. >> my baby kept getting smaller. his arms were getting smaller. his bones were sticking out. so he just looked small. very concerning. especially as a first-time mom. he's so much better now. >> reporter: after consulting her pediatrician she began using a new breast milk testing kit from a company called lactation lab. the company measures calories, carbohydrates, protein and fat content present in a new mom's breast milk. a frozen sample of the milk is shipped to the lactation lab and results are sent along with nutritional recommendations to improve the quality of the breast milk. >> as we were making changes to my diet, he started gaining weight. my calorie count went up for my milk. the kit really helped me and reassured me. >> reporter: the test was invented with the goal of helping breast-feeding moms with nourishing their babies. >> sort of like a food label for your breast milk. >> reporter: stefanie kenneally

says she developed the test out of frustration as a working mom of two after her second son's weight stalled. >> i don't want another mom to go through what i did. or feel like the way i did. >> reporter: dr. canale says the test is evidence based and cited her own study of 30 women who learned what was in their breast milk. >> they were given specific dietary recommendations and then we re-tested their milk, and then they went on to breast-feed for longer than expected because they were reassured. >> reporter: of the 30 women, 28 reported they continued past the six months of exclusive breast-feeding that the american academy of pediatrics recommends. but it's not clear if the women would have continued anyway. lactation lab isn't alone in offering these tests. companies like my milk and everly well offer them but they aren't cheap. lactation lab charges $99 for a basic evaluation and $349 for premium kits which also measure fatty acid and so-called toxins.

currently there are no independent studies that verify the accuracy of these tests. >> i'm not certain there's any rigorous study or any documentation that the science here is really proving useful at uncovering or covering challenges that moms are having with breast-feeding. i think this idea that a one-time or a one-day one-ounce sample of breast milk could be wholly reflective of their ability to be a great feeding pair with their baby is misleading and deeply concerning. >> let's bring in our chief medical correspondent, dr. jennifer ashton, who was nodding her head, shaking her head throughout the entire piece there. it sounds intriguing. your take? >> here come the qualifiers. first of all, interesting, yes, there is not yet conclusive peer review scientific or nutritional science data to support this use widespread for breast-feeding women. is it interesting to talk about the nutritional impact a mom can

have on her baby? absolutely. can it increase awareness? absolutely. can it also potentially increase anxiety, fear, doubt, guilt, all of which are already present in spades for most new moms? yes. so it's not yet ready for prime time. it does have some -- any time we talk about nutrition i'm interested, but this is not yet standard practice recommendations by pediatricians, ob/gyns. >> you're literally the perfect person to talk to, delivered 1,500 babies and has a degree in nutrition as well. should new moms be concerned about the nutrition of their breast milk? >> here's what we need to remember. if you talk about breast milk 101, human breast milk, number one, it is truly the perfect food because it contains fat, it contains protein and carbohydrates and obviously very important for the immunity of a new baby. however, and here is where this test has issues, it varies woman to woman, hour to hour, day to

day. the breast milk at the end of breast-feeding each session is different than at the beginning of a session. the hind milk is where you get all the nutritional bang for the buck, the fat. so again, to imply that one point in time can dictate the entire nutritional status of a baby or a breast-feeding mom is just not really accurate. >> you address this, the social and emotional pressures placed on new moms especially when it comes to breast-feeding. what's your advice to them? >> medically, breast milk is best for both baby but mother, but logistically, emotionally, many women can't or they choose not to, so what i would tell new moms is the operative word in breast-feeding is feeding. you should feed your baby the best way for you and that baby with no judgment, no shame in the ga abody els shou sane. >>d at.at you should be doing. we appreciate that, dr. jen. thank you. let's go down to ginger in

expects of women or how to conduct yourself in the world but we know that dads' input is important too so if they can have these conversations and starters it's critical. >> there's some surprising information in this book as well. >> well, i found that the section on mothering was really interesting because a lot of times people think if you have a child that's mothering, that's attributed -- people will think they're sappy or weak. >> coddling. >> or coddling, but it's actually a great way to encourage empathy and understanding for the people around you and caring for the people around you, and i think that's good for dads to encourage in both boys and girls. >> yeah, and with dads especially, is there something that we wouldn't think of that, you know, that these authors have said, no, this is the way to go. >> you know, a lot of people worry about their daughters being bossy, right. and being controlling, and what they're trying to turn that around and want dads to tell their girls be leaders. know you have a lot to offer. know that when you take control of a situation, you can make really good, positive changes and impact the world in a good way and what parent doesn't want their children to feel that way? and when we think about things they encourage, intuition,
