now from abc 7, live breaking news. >> low and behold, all hell breaks loose. >> that breaking news is a tesla that caught fire this afternoon has just burst into flames again. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm ama daetz. >> and i'm dan ashley. the car first burst into flames after being towed into a shop, and then burst into flames again after being towed to another auto shop in campbell. >> reporter: incredible, you can see the smoke still coming from that tesla model s. it reignited at about 10:00 tonight, roughly 2 1/2 hours after he was towed from that

original location. crews spent six hours today -- this new tesla model s, up in flames. the owner recorded this video moments after his car was towed to a tire and auto repair lot. >> i go in there doing the paperwork and i hear a funny hissing sound. i thought it must be something going on the shop. >> reporter: after the sound came the smoke and then the spark. the fire department put out the blaze but recognized the potential for reignition. >> the vehicle was off-gassing, which mean there is is heat or a lot of energy built up in the batteries still. >> reporter: crews spent nearly six hours waiting for the car battery to cool, then towed it from the lot. the owner didn't want to share his name but says he was driving along highway 17 when a sensor went off, alerting him about a drop in pyre pressure. >> then it said it was dropping

to like 20. so i pulled off. >> reporter: he said he purchased the car three months ago. driving the model s only 1200 miles. more video taken by this witness is being added to a growing album of fires involving teslas, which run on electricity. tesla responded saying we are currently investigating the matter, and are in touch with local first responders. we are glad to hear that everyone is safe. the owner tells "abc7 news" this is the last tesla his family will own. >> this had been in the house and we were on vacation and it caught fire in the garage, the house could go up. >> reporter: we want to give you another look at that tesla as it caught fire a second time. this time in campbell. earlier when we spoke to captain murphy, he mentioned the fire department does train for vehicle fires but electric vehicles provide a different component to response.

and we saw that here as crews spent six hours again waiting for that battery to cool. smoke still coming off of that decemb tesla model s. >> amanda, thank you very much. a massive tornado ripped through washington state today, leaving a path of destruction behind. reporter kate larson is here with that story. kate, that tornado was really rare for that part of the country. >> reporter: absolutely. on average, the entire state of washington only get 2 1/2 tornados a year and almost never happen in december. >> oh, my god! >> reporter: a massive funnel cloud in washington, 45 miles outside of seattle. >> we were from kansas, and i didn't expect tornadoes here. >> reporter: the confirmed tornado on a stormy tuesday afternoon was a surprise. >> we have a tornado in washington state. >> reporter: believed to be just the second tornado ever to touch

down here in this county. >> we were looking out the window at the rain, and it was just really coming down hard. and we started hearing this kind of a roaring noise. i asked my son what the heck is that? tat's about the time the wind hit and it went nuts. >> reporter: the twister hit without warning, destroying homes, peeling away roofs and ripping up giant trees. firefighters checked inside damaged homes. there are no official reports of injuries or deaths. >> i feel sorry for everybody involved, everybody who lost part of their house. >> that's electrical cables. >> reporter: but the danger is not over. there are active power lines down and gas companies are checking for leaks. the national weather service is sending a team tomorrow so that they can assess the damage and determine just how strong the tornado was and how long it was on the ground. ama, dan, back to you. >> all right. thank you so much, kate. we want to stick with the weather now. meteorologist sandhya patel has

a closer look at this powerful storm. sandhya? >> reporter: yeah, it was a strong thunderstorm that rolled through the area. so let's take you back in time with live doppler 7. that red that you see pushing across port orchard is where that thunderstorm developing spawning the tornado. it was reported just before 2:00 this afternoon and confirmed by the national weather service in seattle. take a look at what happens with tornadic storms. you get the updraft, winds blowing up and a downdraft coming down. you get the rotation, and that's how you get tornadoes. so on the enhanced fujita scale, this will be determined as to what level it was tomorrow. they will be doing an in depth assessment on this tornado. dan? >> sandhya, thank you very much. well, the waves have been exceptionally big at mavericks. once again, sky 7 saw many surfers taking advantage of the conditions out there today. they caught big waves but also wiped out, of course, including some professionals.

one of them, aaron gold, is back home in hawaii, recovering from a wave that landed right on top of him yesterday. >> it's like going through a rinse cycle or a car wash and getting hit by a car at the same time. just relax and wait for the timing to pass by. >> the mavericks competition was slated to start yesterday, but conditions are too big and too volatile at the moment. new developments tonight. a mother is on a flight headed to san francisco from egypt. she will be reunited with her dying son after being granted a visa. >> reporter: for the past two months, ali has been by his dying son's bedside alone here at children's hospital in oakland. but tomorrow night, the family will be reunited. the 2-year-old always has his father by his side, but

wednesday night, his mom will be there, too. even if just to say goodbye. >> my son is dying right now, to be honest. even if it's too late, at least she will be here. >> reporter: ali, who is from stockton, brought his son to the u.s. to treat a rare brain disease. but when his son became terminal, he applied for a waiver so his wife come could to the u.s. >> all families belong together. nobody should be separated. >> reporter: she's from yemen, which automatically bars her from sbh from entering the united states under the trump travel ban. even though he is a u.s. citizen. congress got involved. >> as a mother, i am devastated. as a grandmother, can you imagine having a child sick and not being able to visit this child? >> reporter: congresswoman barbara lee negotiated for several days with the u.s. state department. even co-authoring this letter to secretary of state mike pompeo. and it worked.

>> she called me crying with happiness. she's going see her son for the last time. >> reporter: she found out tuesday morning she was granted a spousal visa and boarded the first flight out of care row. >> reporte >> she'll never forget that day. it's amazing for her. >> reporter: ali says the u.s. embassy in cairo apologized for the whole ordeal. her flight lands tomorrow night at san francisco international. >> thank you very much. new at 11:00, a woman was injured when a shot was fired at a bus traveling from los angeles to oakland. the victim was not hit by a bullet. she was transported to the hospital with minor injuries, possibly from the shattered window. 20 passengers were on board. no one else was injured. a second bus picked up the remaining passengers and continued on to oakland.

a $3 million sentlement was approved over the death of andy lopez who was shot and killed by a deputy in 2013. lopez was carrying a toy pellet gun made to look like an assault rifle. the family filed an excessive force civil lawsuit. as part of the agreement, the county admitted no fault or liability. n the south bay, san jose has approved two sites for tiny homes. temporary housing to serve the homeless. they will be located at a construction staging site at mayberry road located near highway 101 and 680. each site will have 40 cabins with shared bathrooms, laundry, and a community kitchen. the city hopes this will allow people to transition into permanent housing. the san jose city council passed an ordinance to regulate e-scooters requiring innovations in order to operate in the city. it asks scooter companies to keep them off sidewalks and cap

♪ ♪ tributes are pouring in for the late penny marshall. the actor, director, and producer best nope feven fo knoe on "lavern and shirley" passed away at the age of 75. reporter maggie rulli has more on her life and legacy. >> reporter: she was one half of the famed duo "lavern and shirley." ♪ best friends and household names on one of america's most memorable tv shows. >> oh, lavern. >> reporter: born in 1943 in the bronx, the daughter of a dance teacher and film director. her older brother, director gary, gave her her first break on "the odd couple."

she was married to rob reiner, divorcing in 1981. reiner tweeting, i loved penny. she was born with a funny bone and the instinct of how to use it. i was lucky to have lived with her and her funny bone. ly miss her. marshall turned to film making, directing "big" and "a league of their own" in 1992. >> there's no crying in baseball! >> reporter: tom hanks, who starred in both films, twiting goodbye, penny. man, did we laugh a lot. over the years, she battled health problems. lung cancer that was in remission as of 2013. but it was complications due to diabetes. penny marshall was 75. maggie rulli, abc news, new york. >> won't be forgotten. elon musk unveiled the first segment of his underground tunnel system he hopes will end what he calls soul crushing traffic.

fog we are tracking here. let me show you the visibility across our region. santa rosa has dropped to about a mile and a half. petaluma down to three miles. as we head towards the morning time period, you'll see that fog developing across other parts of the bay area, as well. so 5:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, here's where you need to look out. in the north bay, the east bay, inland east bay towards the delta and the peninsula will be socked in. allow yourself extra time. because even at 8:00 a.m. when you head off to work or taking your kids to school, you're going to have to deal with areas of low visibility during the commute. here's your morning commute planner. low visibility, use caution if you're driving. if you're taking the ferry across the bay, it will be misty and foggy. and dense fog if you are walking

to b.a.r.t. temperatures 40s and 50s, not terribly chilly. but the waves, high surf advisory until 3:00 a.m. thursday. right now, 16 foot waves. breakers could be between 15 to 25 feet, possibly higher, so that's why the concern is there. tomorrow night at 11:00 p.m., they're coming down to about 10, maybe 15 feet at most. then by friday, it's going to be much calmer by friday night. right now i want to show you some views. looking across the bay at a very gray sky. a roof camera here, looking towards the lights. you can see how overcast it is. another view from the exploratorium camera. this is previewing your morning commute. areas of dense fog, mostly sunny and scattered showers late thursday. thick fog in spots. 40s, 50s for your temperatures as you head into the afternoon hour, it brightens up.

upper 50s to low 60s. level one storm coming your way thursday night, bringing scattered light showers. best chance in the north bay. hour by hour we go. thursday afternoon, evening, it's in the north bay 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. by 10:30, it slides into the east bay. san francisco, the peninsula. and then that front washes out, not much left to it. so we'll go with a light level one system for your thursday. and then only a few showers friday morning. accuweather seven-day forecast, a foggy morning with a sunny afternoon. level one for thursday night, early friday and then looking at dry conditions saturday. a chance of showers sunday and in the north bay, level one for christmas eve. a few lingering drops for christmas day, but nothing to ruin santa's delivery. friday, by the way, winter starts at 2:23 in the afternoon. can you believe how fast this year has gone by? quick. >> thanks, sandhya. >> tomorrow morning
