live doppler 7 fired up this morning as another round of rain makes its way through the bay area. the roads are wet this morning as tens of thousands of people get ready to hit the roads for the holiday. today will be one of the worst days to drive out of the bay area. also one of the worst days to fly. >> just cancel your plans and stick around with us. we will keep you company. >> yeah. >> on this friday, december 21st. it is 6:00 a.m. mike nicco has a look at the forecast. where is it raining, mike? >> that's a good question. i will show you after i give you a look at the storm impact scale. up to 1500ths rain. patchy dense fog. scattered showers in the north bay. especially the southern parts of that, over into the east bay. san mateo bridge southward, no

rain showing up on live doppler 7. walnut creek, light rain falling. and the temperatures running a little milder this morning. upper 40s to near 53 degrees. now, the rain is over by noon. the clouds are still around. 56 to 57. towards 4:00, we are definitely seeing increasing sunshine. temperatures in the mid-50s. by 7:00, right around 50 and dry. but, again, it's this morning when we have the best chance of rain. let's pull in alexis and find out about the commute. >> overall, we have been doing really well. i have our first significant issue of the morning. this is in hayward. we have a four-vehicle crash on southbound 880, just north of e street. and the two left lanes are blocked. so definitely a tough spot to have any lanes taken away. that's about all we know right now. i have not gotten information on any injuries or anything like that. of again, it just happened. so chp is heading there. we should know more once they are on the scene. taking a look at drive times. overall, very light. southbound 101, santa rosa to petaluma, 14 minutes.

another 14 minutes westbound 580, castro valley to the maze. and same thing northbound 101 through san jose. alexis, thank you. right now breaking news we are tracking in san jose. a i deadly house fire on blossom hill road near almandine expressway. >> matt keller has been there all morning for us. matt >> reporter: a sad story. a man was killed in the fire. now they are waiting for arson investigators to arrive on the scene. the first call just after 4:00 a.m. a smoke alarm going off and smoke coming from a second floor apartment at the driftwood manor, blossom hill road. firefighters went in and put out the fire. in their search they found a man. they pulled him out and started cpr. firefighters worked on him for 20 minutes, buff he died at the scene. >> we don't like to see bad things happen to people at all.

it's hard. you think about your families. our guys got in there really quickly. they did their best. rescue is our number one priority. it is disappointing to us. it's sad for everyone involved when things work out this way. >> reporter: fire officials say 15 people are displaced and won't be able to get back in their homes for a while. westbound lanes of blossom hill road are blocked off. of they have a lot of equipment and obviously the trucks and their investigation taking place. so they won't be opening up the lanes until some of that is cleared off. matt keller, abc 7 news. matt, thank you. it's happened again. another family says someone hijacked their baby camera and they heard a voice coming from it saying they were in the house and would kidnap their infant. a texas couple says they heard sexual expletives coming from their 4-month-old son's room. there was no one in there but the baby. nest says it is likely the password for the device was

compromised from a data breach on another site. >> secure passwords are important and unique passwords important and unique passwords are especially important. once it is compromised, the hackers are going to try to use it on all your devices and services to try to break in. others could be compromised others could be compromised without proper precautions. with so many data breaches going on, change your passwords and change them often. take advantage of two-factor authentication if it's available. this seems so simple, but make sure your wireless router is secure. if you want to find out if you have been compromised we have linked a consumer protection tool to our website, abc7news.com. the hunters point ship yard in san francisco. dozens of employees who look at the crime lab on the site will have to wait even longer to find out if their building is safe. the "chronicle" reports a test

for radioactivity inside building 606 has been delayed until at least mid-january. officials say contractual issues with the person being hired to perform the search is causing the delay. previous test results found lead and other contaminants in the tap water. police have been providing workers with bottled water. a is state senator is calling for a change in leadership at pg&e. this comes after the puc claims they lied for years on safety maintenance on natural gas lines. according to the press democrat, state senator bill dodd says the utility has, quote, demonstrated a pattern of poor management and illegal conduct that has shattered lives throughout the state. pg&e says it has made personnel and organizational changes but hasn't disclosed specifics. san francisco police are looking for help finding this man accused ofssaulting another man tuesday afternoon on mason street. investigators say the suspect punched a 38-year-old man in the

face, knocking him to the ground, and then stomped on his head. if you recognize the suspect, call the san francisco police department. a woman is reportedly suing whole foods claiming she was fired from a san francisco store after complaining about sexual harassment in the workplace. according to the chronicle, the former cashier worked at whole foods on california and franklin streets. the suit alleges she was sexually harassed by her male supervisor and terminated days after reporting the man's behavior to management. whole foods, which was acquired by amazon last year, has not issued a response to this lawsuit. a u.s. official tells abc news that the trump administration is planning to cut the number of troops in afghanistan by half. some troops may start withdrawing in a few weeks. this comes as congress is not happy that defense secretary james mattis is leaving. he will retire at the end of february. in his resignation letter he told president trump he should have a secretary of defense whose views are better aligned with his own. this comes a day after president trump made the surprise announcement that u.s. troops

new at 6:00, pope frances is vowing this morning that the catholic church will never again cover up clergy abuse. the pope admitted they have failed to address the problem. he encouraged victims to come forward and then issued a warning to abusers to turn themselves in, saying hand yourself over to human justice and prepare for divine justice. >> breweries from coast to coast are raising a pint to help camp fire victims. triple rock and novel are taking triple rock and novel are taking part in the campaign.

in court for a bail hearing. in court for a bail hearing. >> this story gets worse. rain daugherty faces an elder abuse charge. the san mateo county d.a. says he stole $13,000 from a man with alzheimer's. he used the atm card to withdraw money while doing errands for him. he is now involved with three investigations because he was also named as one of the officers involved in the sfpd racist text scandal in 2011. criminal proceedings in the wilson murder trial may be put on hold after the suspect's attorney says he's not mentally competent to stand trial. john lee cowell is accused of fatally stabbing wilson and injuring her sister at a bart station in july. she said her client is showing she said her client is showing extreme dilution

passed a short-term funding bill with $5 million for the wall. the holdup is the senate, which is expected to reject the house plan today because of the 630-vote threshold. if no spending bill is passed by tonight, parts of the government tonight, parts of the government will shutdown. golden gate national recreation area muir woods and point reyes parking lots, info centers, would all be shut down. alcatraz island will remain open. but ferry service would operate on a reduced schedule. the presidio says they are working to fill the staffing gaps in case of a shutdown. >> family, friends skprbg respects to ray taliaferro next month january 12th at 11:00. he was a long time commonwealth
