good morning, america. tom, i loved your best news anchor voice there uncovering beyonce. >> i'm in overdrive. >> i felt that passion. great to have you with us. we have a very busy friday and want to get right to the storms lashing both coasts as the holiday travel rush gets underway. i had the most harrowing drive coming into times square this morning with all of that rain and flooding. >> i almost didn't make it. you said you were hydroplaning, right? millions of americans hit the roads and the sky, and there's so much going on with the weather. just really sloppy around here. >> it really is. take a look at the roads. that's in new jersey. busy airports are already being affected as well. we've got a live look at laguardia here in new york. they're seeing delays as the holiday crush picks up. ginger starts us off in times square. ginger, it is already pouring out there. >> yes, pouring is the word. if you were dreaming of a soggy christmas, it's coming true. we've got a flood advisory here, flood watches all up and down

the east coast and wind advisories, so pretty rough, and it was rough yesterday in parts of central florida when ef-0 tornadoes blew through. you can see lake wales there, florida, lakeland, and not just the wind with ef-0 and damaging winds that came through but a lot of rain. we're talking 3 to 4 inches. orlando had a month's worth of rain in just one day because it's supposed to be the dry season. has not been dry mid-atlantic through the northeast where we have already seen annual rainfall numbers surpass. we're going to keep getting more rain, 3 to 4 inches possible. that's all in those flood watches. we have got to go to victor oquendo who is in lake wales, florida, with all of that damage. victor. >> reporter: good morning, ginger. this house taking the brunt of one of those tornadoes. the roof partially collapsing. you can see that blue tarp is covering it now. these windows are blown out. there is damage inside, outside, debris everywhere. the wind so strong, it blew this car right off the driveway.

now that storm is on the move. overnight, this north carolina highway underwater as the lumber river spills its banks. in virginia holiday travelers pushing through blinding rain as the powerful storm that hammered much of florida is marching north along the east coast. across central florida three reported tornadoes touching down. in manatee county, a confirmed ef-0. debbie rodan and her family taking cover in her bathroom. >> all i can say is thank god we were okay. as far -- we could have been killed. very lucky, and if you hear that there's a tornado warning take heed and listen. >> reporter: south of orlando one person was injured after another confirmed tornado tore through this home collapsing part of the roof. relentless rain falling 2 inches an hour in spots, flooding roads in tampa, high winds bringing down power lines. not far from there at least 70 homes damaged. in ft. myers, 53-mile-per-hour winds ripping the roof off this home. a storm powerful enough to force

many to stay with family and friends just days before the hol holida holidays. this house has been deemed unsafe, so another family that will have to find another place to stay during the holidays. amy. >> incredibly sad. victor, thank you so much. this is expected, as we know, to be the busiest day of the holiday season for air travel and already the storm causing flight delays. abc's david kerley is at the faa's air traffic control center in virginia with a look at how they are managing all this chaos. good morning, david. >> reporter: good morning, amy. this is the national faa control center. they are watching the entire national airspace on what's going to be a very pressure-packed day because so many people want to get home for the holidays. this is expected to be the busiest day of this holiday season. nearly 3 million people are flying today and already there are problems here. in fact, this is the watch officer here who is going to be sending out messages to airports about the problems already happening across the country. it's because of the maps. you can see new york city up there as ginger just showed you where the weather is the hitting

and look at the map next to it where you see the concentration of flights right now. it is over the northeast, and already there are ground stops at laguardia and jfk. that live picture we have in laguardia, some of those passengers are going to have to wait a little bit longer to get onto their flights. this man is in charge here and he says it's a normal day but the weather and volume will cause some problems throughout the day. tom, back to you. >> david, thanks. we'll be tracking that weather throughout the day. let's turn to politics, the fallout growing this morning from that bombshell resignation. defense secretary james mattis telling the president he is stepping down. remember, this comes just a day after the president made the surprise announcement about withdrawing troops from syria. mattis has widely been seen as a stabilizing presence in the white house, but now he is on his way out. chief global affairs correspondent martha raddatz has more now from washington. good morning, martha. >> reporter: good morning, tom. this is the most consequential resignation from trump's cabinet yet. jim mattis brought vast experience, gravitas, and a

steady hand. he is adored by those who have served with him but he simply could no longer tolerate the differences he had with this president. the letter of resignation came just hours after secretary mattis met with president trump at the white house. mattis making perfectly clear he has deep foreign policy disagreements with the president, writing, my views on treating allies with respect and also being clear-eyed about both maligned actors and strategic competitors, mentioning china and russia specifically, are strongly held and informed by over four decades of immersion in these issues. we must do everything possible to advance an international order that is most conducive to our prosperity and values, and we are strengthened in this effort by the solidarity of our alliances, ending his letter with this, because you have the right to have a secretary of defense whose views are better

aligned with yours on these and other subjects, i believe it is right for me to step down from my position. in the beginning, donald trump thought jim mattis was the perfect man for the job with the perfect nickname. >> mad dog mattis. >> reporter: for mattis who cringes at that nickname, it was duty first. just weeks ago saying -- >> when the president of the united states asks you to do something in america, you just do it. to quote nike, just do it. >> reporter: but syria was the last straw. mattis spent four decades in the marine corps, years on battlefields around the globe, yet donald trump, despite mattis' plea in the to, announced he was pulling all u.s. troops out of syria. >> our boys, young women, men are all coming back now. >> reporter: trump is also planning to substantially reduce u.s. troops in afghanistan. the president had hinted that he

and mattis aren't always on the same page. >> i think he's sort of a democrat if you want to know the truth. but general mattis is a good guy. we get along very well. he may leave. i mean, at some point everybody leaves. >> reporter: but the reaction to mattis' resignation was deep concern that his departure will leave the white house with an unpredictable president unchecked. overnight, majority leader mitch mcconnell who has been infamously careful to avoid criticizing the president releasing a powerful statement, reading, i am particularly distressed that he is resigning due to sharp differences with the president on these and other key aspects of america's global leadership. putting him in sync with his democratic counterpart. >> everything that indicates stability, everything that indicates strength, everything that indicates knowledge is leaving this administration. general kelly, general mattis, so many others. >> mcmaster. >> mcmaster, exactly.

>> tillerson. >> there is chaos now in this administration. >> as for that drawdown in afghanistan that could begin soon as well. we currently have 14,000 troops there. trump is expected to reduce that number by half, if not more. mattis was not in favor of that either, but we are told trump wants to fulfill a campaign promise that he believes is popular with his base, cecilia. >> he wants to check these things off his list. martha, you call this the most consequential departure of this administration. i have got to say the concern i have heard from people over mattis leaving is unlike any concern i've heard in any other resignation in this administration so far. he was really seen as a stabilizing force in this administration. >> reporter: absolutely, cecilia. there is an unease at the pentagon and abroad. i can't stress enough how much of a stability factor mattis is seen as in the national security world and how much the troops admire him. he is staying on until the end

of february, but clearly he will have very little influence. president trump said he will name a replacement soon, cecilia. >> okay, martha, thanks. i want to bring in terry moran who's covering all this from the white house. terry, this resignation, we all thought yesterday was a complete surprise to so many, but mattis and the president had had some public clashes before. >> reporter: they have, cecilia. it did come as a shock to the people here but this relationship as you say has been deteriorating for a long time, not just on syria but on afghanistan as martha mentioned, on iran. secretary mattis thought they should remain in the nuclear deal and on transgender troops. they're really just such different men. their personalities and outlooks on the world. mattis committed to that role of american leadership in the world defined by republican and democrats since franklin roosevelt, trump wants to change all that. now he will. >> okay, terry, thank you. all of this is taking place as that government shutdown looms. congress and the president have just hours until midnight tonight to strike a deal, and it is looking increasingly unlikely

that that deal will happen. overnight, the house passed a bill that would fund the president's $5 billion border wall, but it is not expected to make it out of the senate this morning. our senior congressional correspondent mary bruce has the latest on all of this from capitol hill. even some of the president's own party are privately blaming him for this chaos. >> reporter: yeah, cecilia. there is real confusion and uncertainty here this morning, and many lawmakers are simply fed up. they were heading towards a solution and then the president torpedoed it. now many lawmakers who had headed home may have to come back to d.c. and this morning that shutdown looming is looking even more likely. we have just hours to go here. hundreds of thousands of workers hanging in limbo, and the white house and congress are at an impasse. overnight, the house did pass that plan that would keep the government running and provide the president with

$5 billion for his wall that he is demanding, but earlier the president seemed to be on board with the short-term solution but it would not have funded his border wall. that solution did not include the money for his wall. >> the president faced a revolt on the right. take a listen to some of the pushback he was getting from usually loyal conservatives. >> i think the not funding the wall will go down as one of the worst, worst things to have happened to this administration. >> it looks like a lot of people's worst fears may be realized, and that the president is getting ready to cave. >> laura ingraham, rush limbaugh. seems the president was listening, mary. >> reporter: listening and spo responding and he is incy -- insisting, no wall, no deal to fund the government. it means that hundreds of thousands of federal employees may have to spend this holiday season without a paycheck. some national parks would be closed. if you're traveling, well, tsa and air traffic controllers will still be working. but if you're hoping to get a last-minute passport, you're likely to be out of luck. if you are like me, and eager for those last-minute packages

to arrive, good news there. the post office will be open, up and running and delivering. >> now to new developments in that crisis at a major international airport. this morning the search is still on for whoever flew drones outside gatwick airfield outside of london, shutting it down for a day and leading to 760 flight cancellations affecting 100,000 passengers. abc's james longman has the latest. >> reporter: this morning, some flights are taking off and landing once again at one of the world's busiest airports. that sea of red on the departure board has eased. but despite the first signs of relief the terminal remains a hectic maze of long lines and frustration for over 120,000 travelers just days before christmas. >> we are still here. security is closed. >> we're visiting family and friends in denver and i don't know if we're going to get to see them. >> reporter: at the peak of holiday travel a mysterious drone buzzing over the airfield at london's gatwick airport had forced authorities to halt all flights in and out of the

airport. >> selfish of you. you have hundreds of thousands of passengers that were supposed to travel. >> reporter: bandapassengers std in the terminal, some for over 36 hours, while outside helicopters circled above and police armed with long rifles hunted for the mystery pilot. the british government authorizing the military to step in. >> the activity we've seen is illegal and those who are caught can face up to five years in prison. >> reporter: officials left with no choice. fearful the drones which have been spotted at least 50 times over the last 48 hours, could cause a midair collision. overnight authorities were weighing a new tactical option, shoot down the drone. >> there's a number of factors involved, both the range of the weapon we might choose to use and also how -- obviously how high the drone is. >> reporter: james joins us now. any theory right now on who is behind all of this? >> well, amy, one line of inquiry is a possible

environmental activist, they staged protests at uk airports before, but i think it's safe to say there has been hard lessons learned about how vulnerable airports can be to drones. amy. >> james longman, thank you. tom? back here at home new developments on that missing mother. authorities back at kelsey berreth's colorado home hauling out bags of evidence. she was last seen on thanksgiving. authorities this week also searching the home of her fiance. abc's clayton sandell is in colorado this morning with more. clayton, good morning. >> reporter: her town home became the focus of another search. we watched as investigators and fbi agents went in with cameras and ladders and came out with things like large pieces of carpet and other evidence wrapped in brown paper bags. they met patrick frazee and stopped him, ordered him out of the car and have now placed him under arrest. of course, kelsey berreth went missing on thanksgiving day. police say that patrick frazee,

criticism over how they're running it. chairwoman gretchen carlson is not backing down, and t.j. holmes is here with more on that story. good morning, t.j. >> turmoil this year. this was supposed to be a year that the miss america pageant transitioned in this me too era from a beauty pageant to a showcase that empowered young women. well, sure enough this year it has transitioned. they have said good-bye to swim suits. now hello to lawsuits. >> reporter: accusations of a hostel takeover of the miss america organization. a former board member and four states are suing chairwoman gretchen carlson, ceo regina hopper as well as the organization itself claiming an illegal and bad faith takeover. all four of the states, pennsylvania, tennessee, west virginia and georgia have their licenses terminated by the miss america organization after they publicly contested pageant leadership citing dissatisfaction with the way the group is being run as well as the decision to eliminate the swimsuit competition. the organization calls the

lawsuit meritless and carlson responded by saying, lawsuits will not reinstate swimsuits. it's been a controversial road for the former fox new anchor since she took control of the pageant earlier this year. >> i have so many great ideas for this organization. >> reporter: the 1989 miss america winner took the reins after the organization's previous show runners were accused of sexism and fat shaming contestants which prompted outcries for a new look at the pageant and the me too era. >> we will no longer judge our candidates on their outward physical appearance. >> reporter: that included eliminating the swimsuit competition, which had been a hallmark of the competition since it first started in 1921 but the new plans were met with diggs may by some sectors. 2018 competitor carla mund relinquished her crown after she said she was controlled, manipulated and bullied by the new leadership.

carlson denied the allegations. she said she tried to make mund's experience a good one. >> if miss america becomes who she is supposed to be again, then i will want to be her again. >> reporter: the unhappiness seemed contagious, kayla kline always dreamed and was crowned miss denver 2018 but resigned after she learned of mund's alleged bullying. >> we have seen other local titleholders promising not to compete again until this is resolved. if you don't have local titleholders, you won't have state titleholders and if you don't have state titleholders, you don't have a miss america. >> reporter: and guys, the miss america ceo said this is just a meritless lawsuit brought by people who are disgruntled, who are not on the board anymore. people can debate back and forth. this is an american institution and you've been covering it with gretchen carlson. >> i was a part of it. >> it was supposed to be a transition year. it has been, and maybe it can be ugly and difficult, but right now it is seemingly a mess. >> yes.

yes. change is hard. >> yes. >> all right, t.j. thank you. >> thanks, t.j. we'll turn now to that early christmas gift for two quick-thinking kids who helped stop a home invasion. the calls just released showing how brave these kids were when an armed burglar broke into their house. abc's alex perez has the story. police have a special reward for these guys. >> reporter: good morning, cecilia. that's right. authorities are calling them heroes and investigators say had these kids not had that quick thinking, this situation could have had a very different ending. >> i'm really scared. >> okay, the police are coming in the back door. you're eventually going to hear us say, police, okay? >> reporter: a call revealing the terrifying moments two young siblings just 9 and 10 years old called 911 after an armed gunman broke into their alabama home. >> my puppy's down in his cage and he's barking at him. >> your puppy is? okay. stay on the line with me. the police are there. >> reporter: the robber forced

erik francisco and his sister onayda into the bathroom. he didn't realize they snuck in a cell phone. police surrounding the home. the operator keeping the kids calm. >> i haven't seen bravery like that in a long, long time. >> i ran to the bedroom the offender went into and detective jenkins came right behind me and grabbed one of the children. >> reporter: authorities now calling the kids heroes, rewarding them with gifts. >> that was priceless. they were more excited than it seems like my kids at christmas when we showed up with the toys and the bikes and the trampoline and, you know, all that. >> first they saved us. now they are donating christmas. my parents can't really afford gifts so i'm happy for that. >> reporter: they are very, very happy. as for that suspect, he is now awaiting trial on burglary and a number of other charges, guys.

one day. check out all of the alerts for gusts up to 40 miles an hour include atlanta, charleston and the flood watches in place from virginia all the way up through mmoh -- maine. we're tug aboalking about i-95. big roadways that so many are traveling inundated then it will get down right windy. gusts in new england up to 65 miles per hour, y'all. >> i just checked my phone to check my alert to see if my flight is on time. still on time. fingers crossed. >> good luck. it's bad out there right now. let's turn back to politics and our big story today. chaos in the nation's capital. defense secretary james mattis' surprise resignation stunned lawmakers on both sides of the aisle just a day after president trump announced that troops would be withdrawn from syria. let's go back to chief global affairs correspondent martha raddatz for more. martha, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, tom. among all the resignations in the trump administration this really is the most consequential. jim mattis brought 40 years of experience from war zones to the pentagon and beyond.

he is adored by those who have served with him, but most importantly, he has been seen as a steady hand in what can be a chaotic white house. this was an extremely difficult decision for jim mattis to make given his sense of duty but he simply could not tolerate the differences he had with the president on how our allies are treated and being clear-eyed about our adversary, but it was syria that was the last straw. mattis tried mightily to talk donald trump out of withdrawing our troops but to no avail. the same with afghanistan. the president is expected to cut u.s. troops there by half. mattis stays until the end of february, but he will clearly have even less influence with the president that he had in recent months, tom. >> on that last point that's why the timing is such a surprise. martha, thank you. amy. a turn here, any of you have selfie wrist? it's a real condition apparently. >> is it real? >> that's what they're saying? >> are your wrists feeling okay?

teenagers, celebrities. maybe even your momma. kim kardashian even published a book of her selfies. but could your selfie taking be bad for your health and give you a condition now dubbed selfie wrist? 29-year-old tina choy works in digital media production and she loves her selfies. >> it's really about telling a story where you're at and what you're doing, how active you are. >> reporter: but with all her selfie-taking, she began sensing tingling in her fingers and wrist and later discomfort. after a few months she said it felt like a sharp pain in the corner of her wrist got so bad it prevented her from working and orthopedic surgeon levi harrison is treating her for a condition he calls selfie wrist. >> it's a form of carpel tunnel because what happens is the nerve becomes inflamed and angry. >> reporter: harrison says the problem begins when patients constantly hyperflex their wrist inwards in a rush to capture that perfect angle.

>> you're right in the moment. let's take a picture right now, and that's what happens. >> reporter: everybody responds differently and your wrist pain may not be solely caused by taking selfies. sleeping with your flexed wrist can cause wrist pain and so does repetitive movement from typing. dr. harrison showed tina how to hold her phone without too much bend in her wrist, and put her on a regimen of exercises to do every day. >> back around the world. >> reporter: tina's now feeling better, but still taking selfies. just safer >> that is the nature of our generation right now. we're taking so many selfies these days. >> you heard there how can you prevent it? hold the phone, robach, with not so much strain but another remedy is extreme stop taking so many selfies. [ laughter ] >> dr. t.j., i like your advice. we have a real doctor here, dr. jennifer ashton joins us here. never thought you'd be doing this segment. >> no i didn't, but listen.

>> it's a real condition. >> it's under the category of repetitive use injury. if you go head to toe it's not just the wrist. when we overuse our phones we can see issues in the neck, tech neck and sagging skin as well as cervical spine. eye strain. thumb problems in the hands or other fingers that are constantly on those keys then the he will blow, nerve entrapment from keeping that elbow up there. i have even seen mrsa staph infections on the face. >> oh, my gosh. >> not something any of us want to sign up for, from people holding their phones up to their face all the time. >> that's so disturbing on multiple levels. what's the worst case scenario in terms of these injuries? >> death actually, and we have reported on that. >> from mrsa? >> not from mrsa, but from people on their phones taking

selfies falling to their deaths and we hear about that every year. and by the way, the average age of the people who die taking a selfie from a height is under the age of 24. this is real. head down, they can be hit by a car, don't do it. >> what's the medical answer? is there one? t.j.'s, by the way. >> that's a good one. i'll say pretty much the same thing. people say, doc, it hurts when i do this, you know what i say, don't do this. >> right on. >> four years of medical school for this one. >> i love it. thank you. it's me, my daughter. i'm pregnant and then i have three dogs, as well. >> i really didn't think i would make it home for christmas this year. i didn't get to be with them for thanksgiving so for me to be here for christmas is just a blessing. >> reporter: the call to service often impacts the holidays for the military. >> my husband had to go away like three days before christmas one year. and that was the saddest thing to be able to have to tell your children that daddy is not going to be home for christmas. >> reporter: robin oliver says there are gifts life in the military can bring all year long. >> i have been to some wonderful places that i would probably have never gone to if my husband was not in the military. >> reporter: the families at ft. campbell sharing their special holiday message. >> happy holidays. >> merry christmas.

>> merry christmas. >> we sent our secret santa rob marciano down to ft. campbell on the kentucky/tennessee border to spread christmas cheer. rob, how is it going down there? >> lara, it's going fantastic. this base is so big, one of the largest army installations and so big it straddles two states and we're inside the army, air force exchange service store which is basically a giant military mall. they get a nice little discount here, and they also get a tax break, but as you can imagine, it's still hard for some of these families to make ends meet. they think we're having a holiday party and honor our servicemen and women. we have a little surprise. let's go inside. ho, ho, ho.
