good morning. it's sunday, december 23rd nguy. let's start with a quick look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen tracking doppler 7 for us. >> good morning. we have moist northwest flow and that's bringing in moisture from the pacific. it's going to interact with the frontal boundary later. we'll have a few showers in the north bay. before that front arrives. we're in the 40s and 50s with the cloud cover. 44 in san ramon. 52 in san francisco. 44 in santa rosa and we're warmer due to the cloud cover. here's the plan for today. cloudy skies through 10:00. in the low 50s. then in the afternoon, you'll see rain in the north bay with

numbers in the mid and upper 50s. by the afternoon, a few shower flip downs. even the city could see sprinkles. later on, back into the clouds with numbers in the 50s. i'll track it down and tell you what to expect coming up. developing news. at least 222 people are dead after a tsunami hit the coast around indonesia's sunda strait. this is a live look there at the damage. more than 800 people are injured. at least 28 people remain missing this morning. the country's disaster management agency says those numbers may rise since all affected areas have not been reached much the wave hit about 25 minutes after the anak krakatoa volcano erupted. there was no time for warning. developing news with the government shutdown. congress has gone home for the holiday without coming to an

agreement to fund the federal government. abc news reporter linda lopez explains the sticking point is president trump's demand for $5 billion to build a border wall. >> after failing to reach an agreement on border wall funding, both sides digging in. >> our great country must have border security. >> president trump, if you want to open the government, you must abandon the wall. >> senate majority leader mitch mcconnell declaring the senate out of session until after christmas, asking democrats and the president to come up with a deal. >> push the pause button until the president from whom we'll need a signature and senate democrats from whom we will need votes, reach an agreement. >> following a lunch meeting with the president on saturday, republican senators indicated they would settle for less than the $5 billion. the president wants for the border wall.

the areas, once again, prone to 51 in san francisco. 49 in hayward. upper 40s in mountain view. and with 43 in livermore, it feels warmer out there. the golden gate bridge, nobody is there. the visibility is pretty good. we're looking for cloudy skies. showers in the north bay and then the showers could flip south throughout the day wet and breezy weather arrives for christmas eve. the storm impact scale is a 1. this is for a monday with scattered showers. anywhere from a tenth to .2 and the winds will be an issue that you'll notice monday and into christmas day. here's our timeline as we get through the day today. you'll notice the showers in the afternoon in the north bay. then by 6:00, they want to slip parallel to the coast. we could see a shower in the city, maybe half moon bay. but otherwise, there's a lull tonight and then the next system getting organized by early

monday morning scattered showers. by 3:00 in the afternoon, moderate rain from santa rosa to point reyes. this pushes to the east and south. 5:00 on monday, it's raining in the east bay and the south bay. thn by late monday overnight, still scattered showers. we could see a thunderstorm in the north bay. amounts very light from a couple hundredths in san jose to about a tenth in richmond, .2 in santa rosa. the light rain but behind it, it's going to be breezy. 11:00 on monday, christmas eve when you're out and about, if you don't see the showers, it's going to be getting windy. you'll look at the blues changing to yellows and reds here. these are northwesterly winds, southerly wind ahead of the front up to 30 miles per hour. behind it, we get that wind shift into christmas day. the wdsing oee 15o 25m s e hr we have a winter storm watch.

federation says americans will spend shy of 30 billion d on gift card this holiday season. that's up from last year by a couple billion. the types of card they're buying are also changing. 7 on your side's michael finney has been looking into the trend. >> holiday shoppers out in force at shopping malls and on their computers, too. and the big items being gifted this year, as in the recent past, gift cards. recent study shows shoppers plan to purchase an average of four gift cards this holiday season. each card will be worth about $50. the more than half will focus on experiences, not stuff. >> people don't really post so much about the things that they buy. they post about the things that they're doing. >> shelly hunter is the gift card girlfriend.

tradition despite destruction from the campfire. a christmas tree lighting and ice skating event was held last night. they have run the rink every year since 2012 and says this year would be no different. the paradise park district worked with the city to provide treats to attend ees. 90% of the homes were lost. the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in california history. a family from paradise will be spending time in southern california thanks to the generosity from strangers. their home was destroyed in the fire. the couple, along with their two children, were able to grab a few belongings before evacuating. all else was lost. another couple have a home in riverside county but spend most of their time in l.a. to be close to work. they offered it up on facebook rent-free for a year for a family in need. >> it's gotten better.
