dead, including members of this band. the wave hitting as they performed on stage. the indonesian army and other kr rescue workers are digging through the rubble and officials fear the death toll may rise. abc's daria albinger has more. >> reporter: the tsunami crashing into the coastline at night without warning and with devastating effects. homes and hotels washed off their foundations. >> these rooms where people were staying just completely destroyed. >> reporter: an australian journalist spent the day touring the devastation. >> you are seeing some villages that have been destroyed, cars swept around, tossed around like corks in the ocean and buildings demolished by the surge of sea. >> reporter: people now searching for missing loved ones. rescuers sifting through debris. this young boy being pulled from the rubble after being trapped for 12 hours. the lead vocalist of a popular indonesian band that was

performing when the wave hit, now asking for prayers. several band members were killed. his wife missing. the tsunami likely triggered by an underwater landslide after this volcano erupted. it can be seen for miles, the tsunami hitting 20 minutes later. indonesia does not have a warning system to detect for tsunamis. they rely on detecting earthquakes. >> usually there is a warning because there is an earthquake. this time there was no earthquake, and it was just a tragic fact of nature. >> reporter: many now fear continuing eruptions could cause more tsunamis. >> villages and towns have been deserted because people fear that next tsunami could be along the way. >> reporter: daria albinger, abc news, new york. >> thanks to daria. to the stalemate here at home entering its third day. >> the trump administration is now warning the partial shutdown could last into the new year.sh

also threatens the stability of financial markets as the dow comes off its worst week in a decade. abc's stephanie ramos joins us for a look at the turmoil. >> reporter: zachary and janai, good morning. president trump is skipping his 16-day florida vacation to stay in washington as the senate compromises on legislation that will keep the government funded into the new year. so far, no deal. on this christmas eve, a partial government shutdown is still in place after funding expired for about 25% of the federal government at midnight saturday. and there is no end in sight. negotiations between congressional democrats and the trump team over the president's border wall haven't resulted in an agreement. the president tweeting overnight, the most important way to stop gangs, drugs, human trafficking and massive crime is at our southern border. we need border security and as everyone knows, you can't have border security without a wall. the president's new acting chief

of staff saying this shutdown could drag on into the new year. >> this isto likeheyou psident who refuses to sort of go along to get along. >> reporter: but over the weekend, a shift. the white house backing down from its original demand of $5 billion for the president's border wall and possibly willing to accept a lower amount, but senate minority leader chuck schumer also lowering his original offer of $1.6 billion for border security to $1.3 billion. the president digging into his unfulfilled campaign promise, often saying mexico would pay for the wall. >> in the end, mexico will pay for the wall. i'm just telling you. i'm just telling you. >> reporter: more than two years into his presidency, mulvaney acknowledging the money won't come from mexico. >> none of that is mexico paying for the wall. let's be technical. >> you and i both know it cannot work exactly like that. the department of homeland security can't actually spend money for mexico. we have to get it from the treasury. >> reporter: lawmakers are not slated to return to capitol hill until thursday.

in the meantime, steven mnuchin called the ceos of six major banks on sunday to reassure them the government has enough money to finance its operations. he did this so the markets wouldn't get spooked by the partial shutdown. janai? >> some 800,000 total workers not sure when they will get their next paycheck. stephanie, thank you. president trump says his current defense secretary is leaving sooner than expected. the president announced that on twitter that deputy secretary patrick shanahan will replace james mattis as acting secretary of defense on new year's day. mattis planned to stay through february to ensure a smooth transition, but a white house official tells abc news the tone of mattis' resignation letter prompted the president to make the change. supreme court justice ruth bader ginsburg may be in a new york hospital, but she is still working. the 85-year-old judge underwent cancer surgery last friday, but over the weekend, she voted against president trump's proposed asylum restrictions.

it's not known when the associate judge will return to washington. the court hears arguments in two weeks. authorities have released two people in connection with a drone sighting at london's gatwick airport. police say the man and woman are no longer suspects. describing the pair as cooperative, they were arrested on friday night. two drone sightings shut down uk's second largest airport for several days last week. police say they have recovered a damaged drone near the airport. time now for a look at your weather on this monday morning. >> good morning. unsettled weather for the northwest. snowy just shy of the medford and portland and seattle area. more inland, we run through more snow, particularly around the great lakes region and the mid-atlantic. chilly conditions for the mid-atlantic, and look for rain in san francisco and then to the north and for christmas, watching out to stay clear in el paso, rainy in houston and a bit snowy up

"aquaman" is also doing swimmingly overseas and hollywood is expected to hit a record at the box office this year with revenues crossing $11.3 billion. now to a consumer alert. the expanding the recall of ground turkey to 164,000 pounds. that's due to a possible salmonella contamination. more than 200 people across 38 states have gotten sick since november of last year and at least one person has died. and warning from the fda about avocados. the agency says you should wash them before eating even though it has a peel. the fda says washing is the only way to prevent bacteria and dirt from transferring from the peel to your knife to the insides that we do eat. according to recent study, 1 in 5 avocados tested positive for a bacteria that can cause listeria. now to the holiday shopping

for fast pain relief. tylenol® we're back with video from a massive fire in philadelphia. the blaze destroyed a paper recycling plant. it took firefighters almost three hours to bring it all under control. the flames could be seen for miles, but no injuries reported. a haircut is creating a firestorm in new jersey. a high school wrestler faced the prospect of losing his match if he didn't cut his dreadlocks. >> that's right. now the referee faces a ban and the case could end up in court amid accusations of racism. here's abc's adrienne bankert. >> reporter: mounting outrage over this video taking over a new jersey wrestling match. it shows high school junior andrew johnson getting his dreadlocks cut off just before competing. the referee allegedly tells johnson he would forfeit the match if he didn't submit to the haircut.

the young wrestler appears visibly upset as his locks are shorn. a teammate is seen trying to console him. now the state's division of civil rights is launching an investigation. the video has created a firestorm on social media. many called the episode racist. oscar nominated director, ava duvernay tweets, to watch this young man's ordeal, wrecked me. new jersey's governor also weighing in saying he was deeply disturbed, adding, no student should have to needlessly choose between his or her identity and playing sports. according to the superintendent, the referee decided his hair length and head gear violated regulations. that referee has been benched while state officials investigate the matter. on facebook, the teen's mother writes, he is good new, but that was brutal, emotionally and physically. adrienne bankert, abc news, new york. the release of chilling 911 calls is raising questions of the brutal murder of a utah college student. lauren mccluskey filed a harassment and extortion

complaint with campus police against her ex-boyfriend, melvin rowland. she repeatedly reached out to law enforcement, but each time she was referred to another agency. police say she was shot and killed by rowland on campus. >> hi. i have been blackmailed for -- for money. i'm worried because i have been working with the campus police at the u. >> uh-huh. >> last saturday, i reported and i haven't gotten an update. >> the school opened an investigation, but concluded the tragedy could not have been prevented. mccluskey's part -- parents disagreed saying more could have been done to save their daughter. police gathered evidence in the search for a missing colorado mother hundreds of miles from home. police in idaho say they have gathered evidence in the case after executing search warrants in twin falls. they have not said what that evidence is. kelsey berreth's fiance faces murder charges after his arrest on friday. police think it is possible he had help. berreth was last seen

thanksgiving day. her body hasn't been found. well, some good news for two costa rican fishermen. they are safe after being adrift at sea nearly a month. they were rescued by a passing cruise ship, but only because of bad weather. "the empress of the seas" had changed its route to avoid a storm. a royal caribbean meteorologist tweeted pictures of the rescue. the men were taken aboard the ship as its passengers applauded. sunday night football saw another piece added to the nfl playoff puzzle. seattle is back in the postseason with some crazy catches from receiver doug baldwin. check out this one-handed grab. this set up a score that put the game away. seattle wins it, 38-31. but the big catch of the weekend came during a state championship game in texas. north shore high down by one with three seconds left. demetrius davis puts the ball on a string. the hail mary and the prayer is answered.
