learned overnight about the jumbo jackpot. and the lakers win big against the warriors but lose lebron. new details on his injury. snow and ice causing this nasty highway pileup. the new storm moving across the country hampering travel for tens of millions this holiday week. >> watch out. good wednesday morning, everyone. we begin with new details from the southern border overflight where an 8-year-old migrant boy from guatemala has died in u.s. custody. >> he is the second migrant child to die in u.s. custody this month. his death comes as president trump continues to push for billions of dollars to fund a border wall. a battle that rages on as the government shutdown enters day five today. >> abc's stephanie ramos begins our coverage from washington. stephanie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning.

after speaking with american troops overseas yesterday, president trump denied collusion with the russians again, and he also said he'd be willing to me to talk about a budget deal, but he also says he still doesn't know when the government will re-open. today makes day five of the partial government shutdown. an estimated 800,000 federal employees are likely impacted. on christmas day, president trump claimed those federal workers support his position in the fight with democrats over billions of dollars in funding for the border wall. >> many of those workers have said to me and communicated, stay out until you get the funding for the wall. >> reporter: the president also saying he'll meet with congressional leaders, but right now there is no end in sight. >> i can't tell you when the government will be open. i can tell you it's not going to be open until we have a wall, a fence, whatever they'd like to call it. >> reporter: congress is still away for the holiday, but many lawmakers are reacting to the death of an an 8-year-old guatemalan boy who died while in u.s. custody. this is the second immigrant

child to die in detention just this month. democratic representative jerry nadler, the next house judiciary chairman, tweeting, another tragic death in cbp custody just reinforces the need for the ig to investigate conditions in cbp's short-term holding facilities and, of course, the general suitability of such facilities for families. u.s. customs and border protection say the boy died shortly after midnight tuesday and showed signs of, quote, a potential illness. >> it's just tragic, and we're thinking about his family right now, just what they must be feeling to have lost their child on christmas day. >> reporter: customs and border protection say they've directed medical checks on all of their kids in their custody nationwide. that's about 2,500 kids. now, the president has said separately that he plans to visit the u.s./mexico border in texas at the end of january. janai, zachary.

>> officials say migrants are entering the u.s. just at the height of flu season. stephanie, thank you. overnight asian markets are mostly lower because of bad financial news from the u.s. wall street is having its worst december since the great depression, and the government shutdown is a major factor. the markets could turn around this week, but that aparunlikely. abc's rebecca jarvis reports. >> this is traditionally the time where you see stocks go up between christmas and just after new year's. historically the market goes up a little more than a percent but this christmas eve following that 650-point dow plunge, we are now in the midst of the worst december for stocks since the great depression in 1931, and there are a lot of factors leading to the plunging stock market. first of all, you have interest rates which are rising. trade, the uncertainty over that with china and finally the slowing economy, not just here in the united states, but around the globe. that spells trouble ahead for

what's to come in the new year even though currently the u.s. economy is on relatively firm footing with the jobs pictur healthy continuing to improve and wages going up. there are still some big questions about what comes in the next year. plus, add to that the political uncertainty and that spells trouble and volatility for the stock market. rebecca jarvis, abc news, new york. >> we turn now to the tsunami disaster in indonesia. survivors are traumatized and are afraid of what might come next. more than 420 people were killed and thousands more injured. authorities are warning people in the tsunami zone not to return home. abc's ian pannell is there. >> reporter: yeah, janai, zachary, good morning from one of the areas hardest hit by that massive tsunami that swept through here on saturday night. the sea is behind me i guess probably about 150 yards but so big were the waves that they surged right between these two

buildings. originally the government said the waves were only three feet high but residents and survivors say they were closer to 15 feet high. you can see the damage that they have brought. look at this building here, the waves surged through. and we were told there were three waves through the the back of the house punching out the front wall. you can see this is a solid brick wall. a massive search and rescue operation is under way. we were speaking to a team leader of one of those teams and he told me that they, just their small team operating this area, have recovered 42 bodies and even today they're still out looking for more and that's because more than 150 people are still missing from this tsunami. more than 400 have been killed. 1,500 injured and, of course, hundreds of people have lost their homes, and even so we are seeing people coming back trying to pick through the wreckage trying to get some belongings and all the while in the background we can hear the rumbling of the volcano that triggered the tsunami in the first place. it continues to erupt sometimes as many as 99 times a day as it has since june, and the government is warning people do not come back into this area.

the danger still exists. there could be another tsunami at any moment. janai, zachary. >> and survivors remain on edge there. our thanks to ian in indonesia. also overseas an airport in italy is back open after an ash cloud from mt. etna forced it to close. lava could be seen shooting from europe's most active volcano into the night sky. check out that scene. it's been spewing lava and ash over nearby villages forcing residents to evacuate. back in this country at least one person is dead after a small plane crashed into a residential neighborhood in sioux falls, south dakota. the victim was reportedly the pilot. two homes were badly damaged. no word yet on what caused the crash. federal investigators are headed to the scene. a large storm system is bringing snow to the plains and severe weather to parts of texas and louisiana later today. for now let's take a closer look at your forecast for this wednesday. good morning. now we are keeping a close eye on this low pressure system that's going to create massive

thunderstorms throughout the south central part of the country and the cold side of it creating massive snow as well. here's how that's going to happen. this low pressure system will push right between warm air coming out of the south, cold air in place, snowstorms north of the track, flood and severe storms south of that same track and here's how it's going to develop. we're looking for a mix to slide right in between these two areas with storms to the south and snowstorms to the north. i'm accuweather meteorologist paul williams. coming up, a gamble at the poker table that paid off big time. also ahead, the big news overnight about the record-breaking christmas night mega millions jackpot still up for grabs.

than $850 billion this holiday season, 5% more than a year ago. that includes both in-store and online sales. analysts say shoppers are happy with their jobs and wage increases and low gas prices also helped. online shopping was up 19% compared to last year. americans are expected to return nearly $90 billion worth of holiday gifts and today and tomorrow are going to be the busiest days for returns. some stores give you just 15 days to bring back items, but experts warn even if stores have extended return periods, the extension may not include all products. well, the mega millions lottery set a christmas record last night and now the jackpot is getting even bigger. >> we learned overnight that nobody won last night's $321 million jackpot. that means the jackpot for friday's drawing grows to at least 348 million. meanwhile, tonight's powerball is worth $294 million. but you know who needs mega millions or powerball when you

14-minute drive across the span. no fog. looks good across the golden gate bridge. nice and clear with three lanes in both directions. that will be changing. one hot spot on 237. i'll update that in just a couple of minutes. we begin with a deadly shooting on christmas morning. a woman was called by san jose police early yesterday. now an investigation is still under way. >> abc 7 news reporter matt keller is in san jose with the details. matt. >> reporter: good morning, alexis and jessica. the police chief eddie garcia is scheduled to talk to the media tomorrow afternoon about this officer-involved shooting. four officers are on paid administra ourse this happened. it all happened early christmas morning. they got a call just after 2:00 a.m. on story road and clemens avenue gunshot wounds.
