going because the weather in large parts of the country is brutal. >> that's right. and we begin with that post-christmas weather nightmare playing out for millions of americans in what is turning out to be a tough trip home from the holiday. a major storm targeting the r u morning. rob, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this was a potent pacific storm just a couple of days ago getting through the mountains and we had snow across i-80 up and over donner pass getting to lake tahoe. chains required there and that is going to be the case today as it emerges into the plains where we have a serious amount of winter weather advisories that stretch not just from the canadian border, but all the way down through the border of mexico as well. so, some serious cold air with this. it will draw in some moisture from the gulf of mexico. we have the threat for severe weather today on top of the northern fringe which could bring blizzard conditions. austin to san antonio, and later on today and tonight,

could see a threat for tornadoes, dallas is also in the slight risk area, not just an area that will see severe weather today but a huge hub for airport travelers. for that marcus moore is live for us in dallas this morning. good morning, marcus. >> reporter: hey, rob, good morning to you. this is the day most people will be traveling to return to their homes. in fact, 2.5 million people are expected to fly today on one of the busiest travel days of the holiday season and so far here at dallas' love field we have seen no significant delays or cancellations, just a lot of people ready to travel. rob, as you mentioned, nasty weather could impact thousands of flights as people head home as this storm system moves to the east. expected to dump more ice and snow to the north and bring heavy rain and the threat of severe weather to dallas and to the south. we've already seen how this storm has packed a punch. take a look at this video of a snowy and icy christmas day car pileup that involved at least a dozen cars and it forced officials to shut down an entire section of the 15 freeway in

california. ten people had to be transported to hospitals with injuries. as that system moves to the east with ice, snow and heavy rain expected it could mean potentially more bad news for the millions who will brave the traffic and hop into their cars and head to various destinations today. experts suggesting that if you can hold off another day you might be able to find lighter traffic on the redways and here at the airports. certainly, as we know, mother nature could certainly put a spin on things today. >> thank you, marcus. whit? turning to that tragedy at the border. for the second time this month, a child has died. an 8-year-old boy. matt gutman joins us from los angeles with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. officials say the boy seemed to have flu-like symptoms but it's unclear what role, if any, the

jail-like conditions at the customs and border patrol stations had in his death. but last night i spoke with a devastated border patrol commissioner who said their facilities are simply not designed to accommodate children and is launching an internal review. a christmas tragedy. the death of a second child in border patrol custody in less than three weeks. according to u.s. officials, the boy was identified as felipe alonzo-gomez, he had been detained six days earlier, alongside his father, and displayed flu-like symptoms christmas eve. officials say father and son were immediately transported to this hospital in new mexico. at 1:20 p.m. the hospital determined he had a temperature of 103, but 90 minutes later, released him back to cbp custody with antibiotics. that evening the boy's condition worsened and he was rushed back to the hospital where he died

just before midnight. >> i reached out to customs and border protection to find out what happened and find out what we can do to be helpful to the family. >> reporter: overnight, the cbp calling this a tragic loss announcing it will conduct secondary medical checks on all children in its care with a focus on children under 10. earlier this month, a 7-year-old girl from guatemala died in a texas hospital also while in the custody of u.s. border patrol. the little girl's body was returned to her home village earlier this week. jakelin among an all-time record number of children trying to cross arrived ill, says cbp, but her death leading to outrage and calls for independent investigations. last week, a congressional delegation visited the station where jakelin was held hours before her death. >> i don't know how to describe it. it smelled. it was uncomfortable. it was inhumane. >> what circumstances, what

policies may have contributed to her death? >> reporter: now, because of the concern of a flu outbreak, the cdc has also been notified. the commissioner told me that one of the major issues is the record number of families trying to cross into the u.s. among them, about 24,000 children just this month alone and an all-time record, a humanitarian crisis, the agency doesn't have the resources to handle it right now. whit? >> all right, matt gutman in los angeles. thanks so much. amy? well, now for the third day in a row almost 200 migrants were released from i.c.e custody and dropped off near an el paso bus station christmas day. many were children. the amount of people has been overwhelming but representative beto o'rourke's call for help in the el paso area was answered. he tweeted grateful to everyone who has donated so far, and to all of those on the ground here in el paso who are helping with temporary shelter, food and and other help for these families. heartwarming to see people pitching in.

this issue of america's border is also at the heart of the partial government shutdown now heading into its fifth day with no end in sight. president trump insisting he will sign no deal that does not fund his border wall with mexico. let's go to white house correspondent tara palmeri. tara, good morning to you. >> good morning, dan. today is the first full business day since the government shut down on saturday. federal workers will start to of feel the disruption. >> hello, and merry christmas. >> reporter: moments after his christmas wish to troops, president trump griping about his political issues at home. >> it's a disgrace what's happening in our country but other than that i wish everybody a very merry christmas. >> reporter: trump still fuming about the border wall and giving no indication about when the government shutdown might end. >> i can't tell you when the government is going to be open. i can tell you it's not going to be open until we have a wall, a fence, whatever they'd like to call it. >> reporter: as the government remains partially closed for a

fifth day, the president claiming without any proof that 400,000 federal employees working temporarily without pay over the holidays support his position. >> what is your message to federal workers who have been impacted by the shut down? >> i think they understand what's happening. they want border security. many of those workers have said to me and communicated stay out until you get the funding for the wall. these federal workers want the wall. >> reporter: but some are skeptical. we spoke to one of those federal employees, a government contractor with an 8-month-old son, facing uncertainty about his next paycheck instead urging for an end to the shut down. >> border security is great but basically it feels like extortion when he's holding our jobs hostage. if america is your first priority, you should certainly let us get back to work. >> reporter: after a quiet holiday negotiations between the white house and congressional

the sun certainty lies ahead. that's where investors look and say, things may not be getting better. we switch gears to that tsunami over in indonesia. the death toll climbing even higher. more than 400 people dead now. survivors homeless. now survivors may be at risk for another tsunami. ian pannell is on the ground. good morning to you. >> good morning, dan. just look at the destruction that was brought this huge tsunami on saturday, punching a hole in this solid brick building. at first, the government said it was a wave of just three feet high. locals say there were three distinct waves, the last one they describe at a 15-foot monster. this morning, search teams in a desperate race against time. it's now four days since the tsunami struck. local pop group 17 performing on the beach when the wave hit. and what began as a major rescue

the details. >> the image of andrew johnson having his dreadlocks have been viewed millions and millions of time and this morning we're hearing from johnson's parents through a statement from their lawyer. they are deeply moved by the outpouring for their son and also saying, the referee was late to meet and missed weigh-ins. he failed to raise any issues about his hair until 90 seconds before the match. that's when he was given the ultimatum. now, the statement further says the johnsons do not blame their son's coaches or trainers but it was the fault of the referee and his superiors for this allowing to happen at all. this is as the board of education announced the school meeting would be held today to discuss personnel matters though they said it may go quickly into executive session. in other words, this meeting is closed to the public. not clear if it is in connection with the cutting incident or any sort of action can come from it?

less conflict and less management of all the timers? >> absolutely. the best part is i'd say before the circle device we would remind them, i'd be cooking dinner, grayson, you have five minutes left for 30 minutes, but now it just shuts down their computer. so you don't have to do any reminding. >> reporter: dr. dunckley agrees. she says the battle can wear parents down to the point they just stopped regulating screen time at all. >> it's very exhausting and then the kids get irritated as well. >> to have a tool like that, it really helps you with something that a lot of people really struggle with was extremely helpful. >> the beauty of circle and some other devices and apps like it, each kid's time is tracked across multiple devices. so, say, they get an hour of screen time, once they hit that on a combination of the xbox, their ipad and the laptop, it's game over. now, speaking of games, consoles were big gifts yesterday and
