that automatically triggers an officer down or emergency response within the county. >> reporter: a neighbor told us her mother heard the shots. >> she heard the gun shots. >> reporter: police believe this is the man who shot and killed singh. the surveillance showing the suspect. a third photo shows the suspect's car, a silver or gray dodge extended cab pickup in the parking lot. investigators say it had paper plates like these from a car dealership. >> absolutely considered armed and dangerous. he has committed an act of violence against a law enforcement officer. we encourage the public to be vigilant, if they see something call 911. >> reporter: a k-9 handler singh lived in modesto. he worked for the newman police department. just two days ago on christmas eve he posted these photos on

his facebook page showing him out on a fishing expedition. >> purchased the car two months ago. >> reporter: the owner of auto resources told us the suspect and a relative recently purchased the truck in merced. >> it's unfortunate. the cops are trying to protect all of us. >> reporter: and we're live here in newman. just within the past hour we learned that the stan slaus county sheriff has located the truck that the suspect they believe was driving when corporal singh was shot and killed. we are at a mobile home park less than four miles from the shooting scene. within the past hour we have learned that this truck was located inside of a garage here. it looks like it was concealed in some way. at this point sheriffs are saying they believe this is the suspect's truck. at this point they have yet to locate the suspect. so the man hunt continues.

here in newman, laura anthony, abc 7 news. >> we saw some of the pictures posted. hours before corporal singh was shot and killed he posted a picture of himself and his k-9 on instagram with the message is sucks being stuck at work on christmas eve and seeing photos from family in fiji. merry christmas to all of my family. we sent out the alert through the abc 7 news mobile app. the app is free to families are out of their homes because of a fire that heavily damaged their apartment building. one family escaped the flames by climbing down from a second story window. abc 7 news anchor is live at the scene with their story tonight. >> reporter: they had to do it on the back side of this

building because as you can probably see the front side was heavily damaged by fire. we have watched work men going back and forth utting up the ply wood to keep people out. this is a remnant of some of the occupan occupants' lives. this is the nightmare she woke up to. a neighbor took cell phone video of flames gutting the apartment he shares with his parents and siblings. >> i woke up to my dad coming into the room telling me to get up and that there is a fire. >> reporter: he was groggy, but aware enough to try to get out. >> i tried to like go outside the front door and there was just fire all over the porch. so we had to jump out the window. >> reporter: not jump exactly, more like climb down the bedding that his dad hastily tied together. >> very impressive. quick thinking on their part. >> reporter: assistant fire chief said because of the potential for evacuationathize response went to two alarms. >> we believe the fire was

either somewhere immediately just inside the front door of one of the two upstairs units or outside. we are suspecting a barbecue. >> reporter: the two upstairs apartments suffered heavy fire damage and the two below suffered smoke and water damage. the units are unlivable, but occupants will be able to return. everyone was saddened that this happened the day after christmas. >> there is a lot going on. it is cold. people use space heaters. they have fire places, christmas trees. >> it's rough but it is cool because i have a bunch of friends that live around here. so they will help us out. >> reporter: the red cross is helping the families who were displaced find someplace to live temporarily tonight and for the

near future. most of the day while we were here there was a cat who lived in one of the lower units that was missing and everybody feared for that cat's safety. we saw a couple of young ladies a few minutes ago who found it and rescued it. eric thomas, abc 7 news. >> that's good. thank you so much, eric. the body of a driver involved in a single vehicle accident christmas night was missing for just over 12 hours until relatives made the grim discovery. the accident happened on a busy south bay freeway and there is mystery about how far away the body was discovered from the accident. david louis is live at chp in redmond city which is handling this investigation. >> reporter: there are actually two mysteries the chp has to address. one is how do the relatives find the dead man's body after officers had done a search? injured to walk away for almost

a mile from the accident scene before he collapsed and died? chp says the accident happened around 6:30 christmas night but officers never located the driver. the toyota suv was abandoned and appeared to be the only vehicle involved. relatives showed up and made the disturbing discovery of the man's body in thick vegetation along the side of the freeway. >> we are trying to piece together how they became aware of this and why they took it upon themselves to look for their family member. >> reporter: a relative said it was his uncle. the body was found against a sound wall top a very steep embankment on the southbound side of the freeway however the accident apparently happened in the first lane on the northbund lanes. somehow the driver crossed over the barrier and crossed over three lanes on southbound 85 up here. the distance between where the accident happened and where the

driver's body was found is about a mile. chp investigators spent hours taking extensive measurements to document the distances. this stretch of highway 85 has no street lights and a narrow shoulder. it was dark at the time of the accident. that would make it more difficult to locate someone who had walked away. chp says it is not unusual for a driver injured in an accident to become disoriented or confused and to try to get out of lanes of traffic. >> especially with head injuries, their sense of awareness and where they are and what they are doing potentially can become alterred. >> reporter: the coroner's office released the name of the driver. he was 40-year-old allen wilcox of los gadoes. we are live in red wood city. >> thank you. in the south bay san jose police chief is expected to release more information on a deadly officer-involved shooting christmas morning that left one woman dead and another wounded. police say a female driver

rammed her car into a police car at lee avenue and fruitdale avenue. four officers opened fire. the driver died at the scene. she has yet to be identified. a female passengerologi also ha gunshot wound but survived. both were in a double shooting that happened earlier in the area. it's a post christmas gift for investors from the stock market today as it had its best day in ten years. wall street rebounded in a big way wiping out losses from its dismal christmas eve. the month had bip on track for the worst since the great depression. the nasdaq picked up 361 points and s&p 500 gained 116. today is one of the busiest travel days of the year with u.s. airlines expecting to handle nearly 3 million people today. if you are headed east you may run into problems because of a storm moving through the upper

south. on the cold side you have blizzard warnings in effect. there is a lot going on with this storm system and it moves to the east. if you are traveling tomorrow we will likely have issues through the great lakes and deep south. be prepared if you are traveling east you will have delays in the skies. for us tomorrow it will turn windy around here. wind advisory goes into faeffec a powerful storm over the texas planes led to the cancellation of today's first responder bowl game between boise state and boston college. both teams managed to get a few minutes of play in at cotton bowl stadium. lightning struck part way through the first quarter. weather conditions went down hill from there. forecasters predicted the nasty mix of wind, rain and thunder wouldn't let up so officials cancelled the game designating it as a no contest. >> you know it is bad when they cancel a football game in texas. california governor elect will host a star studded concert

to raise money for wildfire victims. pit bull, x ambassador, cold weather suns will perform january 6 at golden one center in sacramento. all proceeds will go to the california fire foundation to help fund long term recovery and rebuilding for communities devastated by the deadly wildfires in 2017 and this year, as well. justice ruth bader ginsberg has been released from the hospital. the supreme court justice returned home after undergoing cancer surgery. she was discharged from a new york hospital on christmas day. surgeons removed two cancerous nodules from her left lung on friday. doctors discovered them in november after ginsberg fell in her office and fractured three ribs. they say there is no evidence of any disease elsewhere in her body. hope you had a wonderful christmas. for all indications it was a pretty good holiday for the

usually the busiest days when it comes to returning gifts. maybe you don't like that sweater that someone gave you or the pair of socks. abc 7 news reporter discovered a different trend. >> reporter: the sales rolled out first thing this morning, deep discounts to move merchandise after christmas. >> deals are really great. everything is 50% or more. i just wanted to replenish my supply of bags and gift wrap and tags and everything. >> reporter: target opened at 7:00 this morning and shoppers showed up. they weren't just buying wrapping for next year. some are buying next year's gifts. >> they have the gift sets from 50% to 75%. i give them to my kids. >> reporter: you'll save that for a year? >> definitely. >> reporter: the store appears to be bracing for long lines of people returning their gifts, but that didn't materialize this morning. the manager told us over the years people have learned to wait a few weeks to do returns to avoid crowds.

san francisco dropping to 43 degrees over the next 12 hours. live doppler 7 along with satellite, we are watching a storm system arrive in the pacific northwest. you can see rain and snow around seattle and portland. for us what it will do, it will drag a cold front over california. that cold front will not bring rain unfortunately, but what it will do, it is going to kick up our winds over the next 24 hours. tomorrow morning at 6:00 in the morning, the winds are first picking up in the north bay, likely gusts over 20 miles per hour. then we all feel the wind by the afternoon and the evening tomorrow. thursday 6:00 you can see the winds are really active out of the north gusting over 20 miles per hour at times. so it's for that fact tomorrow morning a wind advisory will go into effect at 7:00 in the morning and essentially this wind advisory is for our highest hills across the bay area where

>> reporter: christmas in the park in downtown san jose brings joy to hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. in 2018 college football is cutting back the holiday tradition a week early. >> normally we run until at least new year's day to make way for the college championship game in town come early january. >> reporter: in the past taking down all the displays was a two-week job. this year, they have only five days so they hired extra workers. several events are being held all around downtown san jose leading up to the 2019 college football playoff national championship game on january 7 being held at the levistadium. christmas in the park director says the nonprofit is getting compensated for any lost revena next year the holiday festivities will be back. >> it will be our 40th

live where you live, this is abc 7 news. here are the stories making headlines. a manhunt is on for a gunman who killed a police officer in the central valley city of newman. corporal ronil singh was killed during a traffic stop early this morning. his uncle said singh was working overtime to provide the best for his wife and son. investigators say they are looking for a man, this man you see here. just a short time ago they say they found what they believe is his pickup truck. a terrifying scene on video. abc world news sent this tweet about a yacht fire. a 5-year-old child and five adults were rescued from this fire off the australian coast. it's believed the fire started on the yacht's engine room. we are getting tips on the best ways to repsychological that holiday wrapping paper. we have advice on what we can

isis. >> when i became president they were a very dominant group. they were very dominant. today they are not so dominant anymore. >> reporter: trump's first visit to a combat zone since becoming commander in chief. thanksgiving the president spoke with members of the military around the world from his south florida resort. asked if he knew when he was planning to travel to iraq and afghanistan? >> i do but i can't tell you. >> reporter: the president said while on the ground he has no plans to remove the 5,000 u.s. troops in the country. the visit comes one week after the president announced the withdrawal of 2,000 service members from syria. the president is planning to reduce the current number of troops in afghanistan from 14,000 to 7,000 according to u.s. officials. the withdrawals have sparked outrage from lawmakers on both sides. the president moving up his departure date to the first of the year for james mattis. the president claimed isis has been defeated in syria but today

whatever they would like to call it. >> out of 800,000 federal workers more than half have been forced to work without pay and the rest are on nonpaid leave. u.s. immigration authorities say they have done medical checks on every child in border control custody prompted after the death of the second child under the agency's care. the 8 year old died christmas eve in new mexico in border patrol custody along with his father. officials say border patrol agents and others have examined children in federal custody for illness. another child died while she was detained by border patrol. homeland security nielsen said she will looking into the screening. the dhs spokesperson says there

have been six border patrol in custody deaths this year. russian president vladimir putin says he is ready to deploy a new class of hypersonic nuclear capable missiles that can evade many defense systems including those in the united states. russia calls this new missile system -- putin made the announcement after overseeing what the kremlin says was a predeployment. the system can strike any point in the world and can evade the u.s.-built missile shield. the kremlin expects to roll it out in weeks. indonesia's government is warning people living near a volcano to avoid coastal areas because of the potential for tsunamis. the tsunami on saturday killed more than 420 people. it drove thousands out of their

homes. high waves and heavy rain are expected today. there is fear of a landslide striggering a tsunami because the cliffs of the volcano's crader could collapse into the sea. a quake jolted eastern sicily injuring ten people. villagers fled their homes after the tremor hit at 3:19 local time. an 80-year-old man was rescued from the rubble of a house. the quake damaged some homes in rural areas, toppled a church statue and opened up cracks on a highway. officials say the quake was part of a swarm of some 1,000 tremors linked to the ongoing eruption this week. coming up next, a high school wrestler is told by a referee cut his dread locks or forfeit his match. there is new fallout over this controversial incident which was caught on video. you can live longer if you drink coffee and alcohol. the certain age group

an emergency meeting is scheduled for tonight after a high school referee told a new jersey wrestler to cut his long hair or forfeit the match.

>> the regional board of education is expected to discuss what it is calling personnel matters. we are told the new jersey state attorney general's office is also looking into it. >> reporter: this is the video that has been seen millions and millions of times. andrew jaupsen having his dread locks off after a referee demanded the 16 year old lose the hair style or forfeit his match. the wrestler won his match though he appeared vizbly distraught. his parents releasing a statement calling the entire incident outrageous claiming the referee's tardiness was a factor that day saying the referee was late to the meet and missed weigh ins. when he did evaluate andrew he failed to raise any issues with the length of his hair or the need to wear a head covering. the family says it wasn't until 90 seconds before that match that their son was issued the ultimatum. >> from the matches i have seen, i have not seen his dreads be a problem with the referee.

>> so mindfulness is a way of being present and attenditive t your life. you can train yourself to approach your own life in that way. >> that is not instinctive. some people need help in that regard. walk me through what that looks like. >> you take a pause, slow down, just take one moment and kind of follow your breath in and out. and suddenly you are a little more aware of what is happening in your internal environment and that can help lead to better decision making and more clarity in your experience. >> because i think we all tend, holidays not withstanding, but to feel as if we are on a treadmill and no time to really reflect on what is happening around you and how you react to it and what it means to you. you have worked with the u.n. and google. why are the holidays so stressful?

what are the trigger ss? >> we know finances, interpersonal stress. we know that we are kind of triggered by our own families and by our own internal dynamics. it is so important just to take a moment to pause. it doesn't take that long actually. you can take one breath in and exhale to the count of two. our nervous systems are kind of wired to respond to threats and stress. they get chronically stressed out. we can mediate that by kind of taking a longer exhale, by doing medication practices, mindfulness practices. >> i was going to ask you, let's assume that i am stressed out. what would you tell me to do beyond that? you must help me think about certain things. >> i'm a teacher on the app simple habit. it is a mindfulness hap. you can have someone else guide you through how to be with your own experience whether deal wg

poll. a majority said they are willing to consider moving from a full sized home to one that is 600 square feet. what is driving up interest in living in less space? builders of tiny homes say small dwellings allow you to have a smaller mortgage, save money and use that cash to upgrade your living. however, not all generations feel the same way. more than half of millennials are open to the idea. the feeling is shared by only 45% of baby boomers and 29% of seniors. potential interest does not only depend on age, but also location. building codes and zoning laws in some cities make large-scale sales of tiny homes harder. and if a home is on wheels buyers may struggle to secure traditional financing. changes are on the horizon. according to the national association of home builders, a newly updated building code

suspect's vehicle. tell us more. >> reporter: that's right. in the last 90 seconds they just towed this truck away from this mobile home park. we are about four miles from the shooting. that happened just about 1:00 this morning. let's show you the video we shot of this truck. it's a gray or silver dodge. it fits the description of the truck that the officer himself actually radioed in just moments or seconds before he was fatally shot. investigators found it hidden in a garage just a few miles from where a fatal police shooting occurred. that is the dodge truck believed to be the one the suspect was driving when he gunned down newman police corporal ronil singh. it started with a traffic stop just before 1:00 a.m. and quickly turned deadly for the 33-year-old singh. >> on a traffic stop he got back
