>> reporter: that's right. in the last 90 seconds they just towed this truck away from this mobile home park. we are about four miles from the shooting. that happened just about 1:00 this morning. let's show you the video we shot of this truck. it's a gray or silver dodge. it fits the description of the truck that the officer himself actually radioed in just moments or seconds before he was fatally shot. investigators found it hidden in a garage just a few miles from where a fatal police shooting occurred. that is the dodge truck believed to be the one the suspect was driving when he gunned down newman police corporal ronil singh. it started with a traffic stop just before 1:00 a.m. and quickly turned deadly for the 33-year-old singh. >> on a traffic stop he got back on the radio and called off for

shots fired. that automatically triggers like an officer down emergency response within the county. >> reporter: a neighbor posted this video on snap chat just after the shooting and told us her mother heard the gun fire. >> she heard the gun shots about five or six of them. >> reporter: police believe this is the man who shot and killed singh. the surveillance showing the suspect buying beer at a nearby convenience store. a third vehicle shows the suspect's car in the store parking lot. police believe this is the same truck parked in the garage of the mobile home park but the manhunt for the suspect continues. >> considered armed and dangerous. he committed an act of violence against a law enforcement officer, killing that officer. so we encourage the public to be vigilant, if they she something call 911. >> reporter: a k-9 handler, singh lived in modesto and is survived by his wife and

5-month-old son. he worked in the newman police officer. two days ago on christmas eve he posted these photos showing him out on a fishing expedition. >> they purchased a car. it was two months ago. >> reporter: the owner of auto resources told us the suspect and a relative recently purchased the truck at the used car lot in merced. >> it's unfortunate, the cops are trying to protect all of us. it's an unfortunate situation. >> reporter: we are live here in the mobile home community less than four miles from the shooting site. the garage where they removed the truck from is just beyond that gray toyota there. at this point we are not clear on what led police to this mobile home park, whether this is where the suspect was living or maybe a family or friend. we are hoping for more information. i can tell you at this point that they have not located the suspect himself so that manhunt continues. live in newman, laura anthony,

abc 7 news. >> laura, i can only imagine how the corporal's wife is dealing with this with that 5-month-old baby. any idea how the family is coping? >> reporter: well, i can tell you that we did go by the family home. there were a large number of people there. it looked look many friends and family from the community there to pay their respects. i talked with one gentleman who is a family friend. he told me there would be no comment from the family and friends in part because they are waiting for corporal singh's parents to fly here from fiji. they are also waiting for his brother to come here for the services and the plans that they will have moving forward. obviously, a very difficult time for the family. >> terrible. we saw the photo. the corpora corpora k-9. where was the dog during this? >> reporter: the dog was inside of his suv when he made the traffic stop.

we are told that the dog, sam, is actually a narcotics k-9 and not one that is trained to apprehend or arrest someone. the dog was actually inside corporal singh's vehicle. we are told the dog was uninjured, but apparently unable to really come to the aid of corporal singh. >> thanks very much. laura anthony reporting for us tonight. >> it has been a deadly year for police officers. in california 11 officers have been killed while on duty, five by gun fire. four families are out of their homes on this day after christmas because of a fire that heavily damaged their apartment building. one family escaped the flames by tying sheets together and climbing down from a second story window as you can see here. this happened near canal and the 580 freeway. eric thomas is on the story. >> reporter: this may look like a couple of bed sheets hastily

tied together, but for this 16 year old and his dad, it was a life line. >> i woke up to my dad coming inside my room telling me to get up and that there is a fire. >> reporter: they had to retreat to the back window. this is why. a neighbor took cell phone video of the flames bursting into the front. >> i tried to like go outside the front door and there is this fire all over the porch so we had to jump out the one in the back. >> reporter: the make shift escape rope kept them from having to jump and risk serious injury. >> very impressive. >> reporter: assistant fire chief says because of the potential for evacuations, the response quickly went to two alarms. >> we believe the fire was either somewhere immediately just inside the front door of one of the two upstairs units or outside. we are suspecting a barbecue. >> reporter: the two upstairs apartments suffered heavy fire damage. the two directly below suffered smoke and water damage. there was one minor injury.

the units are unlivable, but occupants will be allowed to return to the other apartments. everyone is grateful there were no serious injuries but saddened this happened the day after christmas. >> this time of year it is cold, people use space heaters, have fire places, christmas trees. >> it's rough, i guess. it's cool because i have a bunch of friends that live around here that are accepting. so if we have a need they will help us out. tlrpt closest fire station is just two minutes away. that's why firefighters were able to get the flames knocked down in less than 15 minutes. eric thomas, abc 7 news. a second person died following a fire at a three story home early monday morning. 69-year-old connie hooker has died from the fire that broke out in her home shortly before 1:00 a.m.

firefighters say it sparked in the living room on the second floor where there was a christmas tree. her husband, 83-year-old michael hooker died on scene. a firefighter suffered minor burns while trying to enter the home but is okay. millions of californians got the new real i.d.s this year from the dmv. homeland security says the department's application requirements are not stringent enough. abc 7 news reporter vic lee with the story and dmv's response. >> reporter: the day after christmas, a slow day everywhere except at the dmv. the field office in san francisco was packed as always. many were here to get their real i.d.s. he knew all about the dmv's latest controversy. millions of californians got new i.d.s but homeland security says the process doesn't meet federal standards. homeland security requires at least two documents to prove where you live.

dmv requires only one proof of residency. the department defends its process by saying the second verification of address comes indirectly. the second proof would be satisfied when the real i.d. driver license or i.d. card is delivered by mail to the applicant and return service is requested. if the applicant doesn't live at the address the i.d. returns to the dmv. the department, however, intends to correct this procedure beginning in april. homeland security says it will accept the i.d.s issued before then. many applicants aren't taking any chances. she came loaded with documents. >> i am an overachiever so i brought in like five. i didn't want to have to come back. >> home addresses and at least two of them. >> four of them actually. >> reporter: this is just the latest problem facing the dmv. it comes after the department was harshly criticized for long

wait times at field offices. vic lee, abc 7 news. there is a big bounce on wall street after days of dismal numbers. today is the single largest one day point gain in dow history. it happened after the white house said fed chairman powell would not be fired. the nasdaq picked up 361 points and the s&p 500 gained 116. the president and first lady made their first visit to a combat zone during a surprise visit to iraq. during a speech to service members the president defended his decision ri isis lost a significant amount of territory in syria and iraq and is still seen as a threat. the u.s. has more than 5,000 troops in iraq. the presidewhite house says the president did not meet with iraq's prime minister because of security concerns. there is no end in sight for

leave. active members of the coast guard are not getting paid. it's the only branch of the military directly affected because it is funded through the department of homeland security. nbc news reporter has an update from washington. >> reporter: with one fourth of the government closed there are signs of the partial shutdown in washington. lawmakers are back thursday to continue talks with the president over funding to fully reopen the government and build a southern border wall. the president commenting on the shutdown during a surprise visit to iraq. >> whatever it takes. we will have a wall. we need safety for our country. >> reporter: nancy pelosi told "usa today" trump is being a fear monger and using scare tactics to gain support. more than half are forced to work without pay, the rest on nonpaid leave. >> i mean, border security is great, but basically it feels like extortion. he is holding our jobs hostage.

>> we receive a lot of wrapping paper and cardboard boxes and tissue paper from the inside of gifts. >> reporter: not everything that comes down the conveying belts can be recycled. you can recycle more than 90% of wrapping paper but approximately ten percent proves to be more difficult. >> something that has two or three materials all in one. >> reporter: like wrapping paper with velvet or metallic flex on it. this wrapping paper and this paper card are okay to recycle, but not this ripen th enribbon folks here say save the ribbon and reuse it next year. >> it is a good idea to have a bag or box so you can reuse ribbon for birthdays, mother's day. there are many opportunities throughout the year to give gifts. >> reporter: save your holiday bows. those can't be recycled either. here is another tip for when you are thinking about wrapping gifts next year. >> our feeling about tape is

we will all feel that wind. again, it's a cool wind out of the north and likely we will see frequent gusts over 20 miles per hour. it's for that fact a wind advisory will go into effect tomorrow morning at 7:00 in the morning. it will be highest in terms of wind speeds in our hills. that is where the wind advisory is in effect. what to expect tomorrow? for many of us you will feel the wind 20 to 30 miles per hour. in our ridge tops where we had the wind advisory in effect gusts could be close to 55 miles per hour. it's a good idea to secure the holiday outdoor objects because the wind could blow them around. highs on thursday is a bright day but windy day. 57 in san francisco for the high. 59 in concord and napa. the accuweather seven day forecast tomorrow is a breezy day with the wind advisory in effect. friday it is a chilly morning around here and it stays breezy to end the week. the winds will relax over the weekend and then early next

it seems the plant based burger has run into a glitch. it is available at about 5,000 restaurants but the color of the burger is delaying efforts to get it into supermarkets. they use genetically modified yeast to produce the central ingredient. it gives the burger its meat-like flavor and the color. the food and drug administration says it needs to be approved as a color additive before the uncooked burger can be sold to individual consumers.

tesla owners are taking to social media to complain about rude truck drivers intentionally blocking supercharger stations. the owner took to reddit to post what happened in california. she says the drivers were judging them for driving electric cars. in tennessee a tesla owner spotted a truck backed into a supercharger station and pretending to get a charge. the practice is so common it has become known as icing for internal combustion engine. elon musk tweeted that the company is increasing tesla's superchargers within cities and working with landlords to add at home charging to apartment buildings. the golden state warriors are -- the team says thursday's game will be the 311th consecutive home sellout in franchise history. that's going to be a new record. the latest streak began in
