"abc 7 news" reporter laura anthony has been on the story all day. she is live with the very latest. laura. >> reporter: well, hi, dan. we are here at the martins rv or mobile home park. this is where this truck was located at about 3:00 this afternoon. this carport behind me. now, when we arrived we saw a number of pieces of big plywood in front of where the truck was parked. it appeared someone was trying to conceal it in this carport. i'm told this break came after someone called in a tip about something they thought looked suspicious. investigators found it hidden in a garage just a few miles from where a fatal police shooting occurred. that is the dodge truck believed to be the one the suspect was driving when it gunned down newman police corporal ron issue l singh. it started with a traffic stop just before 1:00 a.m. and quickly turned deadly for the 33-year-old singh. >> on a traffic stop, he got

back on the radio and called off for shots fired. so that just automatically triggers like an officer down emergency response within the county. >> reporter: a neighbor posted this video on snapchat just after the shooting and told us her mother heard the gunfire. >> she heard the gunshots, like about five or six of them. >> reporter: police believe this is the man who shot and killed singh, these surveillance stills showing the suspect buying beer at a nearby convenience store. a third photo shows the suspect's car, a silver or gray dodge extended cab pickup in the store parking lot. police believe it is the same truck parked in the garage of a mobile home park, but the manhunt for the suspect continues. >> absolutely considered armed and dangerous. you know, he has already committed an act of violence against a law enforcement officer, killing that officer. so, you know, we encourage the public to be vigilant, if she see something to call 911. >> reporter: a canine handler, singh lived in modesto and survived by his wife and a five

month old son. he worked for the newman police department, one of 13 sworn officers since 2011. just two days ago on christmas eve, singh posted these photos on his facebook page showing him out on a fishing expedition. >> they purchased the car and it was two months ago. >> reporter: the owner of auto resources, jamil taha told us the suspect and a relative recently purchased the truck at tahoe's used car lot. >> it is unfortunate, the cops out there trying to pro tenthte and it is an unfortunate situation, exactly. >> reporter: we talked with neighbors here. they told us a man fitting the suspect's description has lived here but just for a very short time. i also talked with sheriff's investigators a short time ago. there is no update on the manhunt for the suspect. at this point they're not certain if he was able to get away in a different vehicle, perhaps a stolen car, or if he walked away from the scene here and is perhaps close by.

city office which is actually handling the investigation. david. >> reporter: well, you're right, ama. the accident happened in the northbound lanes of highway 85 in the los altos area. when chp arrived the driver was nowhere to be found. it turns out that he apparently walked about a mile away from the accident scene, climbed up an embankment where he was later found dead. it took relatives to locate the body of a driver involved in a vehicle accident. they called chp this morning to report the body had been found in the vegetation along highway 85 in los altos, about a mile north of where his toyota suv had been involved in an accident christmas night. >> we're still trying to piece together how they became aware of this and why they took it upon themselves to come out here and look for their family member. >> reporter: chp officers found the suv but no driver when they responded christmas night around 6:30. this stretch of the west valley freeway has no streetlights and only a narrow shoulder. it would have been dark at the time of the accident. the body was found against a

sound wall atop a very steep embankment on the southbound side of the freeway. however, the accident apparently happened in the very first lane on the other side of the center barrier in the northbound lanes. somehow the driver crossed over the barrier and crossed over three lanes of southbound 85 before getting up here. the distance between the accident scene near fremont avenue and the location of the body is about a mile, so it is unclear why the driver would go such a distance while waiting for emergency response. relatives indicated they did not want to talk to reporters about details or concerns they had. however, the chp told "abc 7 news" that injured drivers can get disoriented or confused following an accident. >> especially with head injuries, you know, their sense of awareness and where they are and what they're doing, you know, potentially becomes completely -- can become altered. >> reporter: the santa clara county coroner's office has identified the driver as

40-year-old alan wilcox of los gatos. at chp in redwood city, david louie, "abc 7 news." >> thank you. >> in the north bay the red cross is helping four san rafael families find temporary housing tonight after a fire damaged their apartment building. a father and his 16-year-old son had a narrow escape from the flames by climbing out a second story window using bed sheets tied together as you can see. this makeshift rope kept them from having to jump. >> we tried to go outside the front door and there was fire over the porch, so we had to jump out the window in the back. >> very impressive. quick thinking on their part. >> quick thinking under a lot of stress, too. assistant fire chief bob sina says the response quickly went to two alarms. he suspects a barbecue may be the reason for the fire. the two upstairs apartments suffered heavy fire damage. the ones directly below were inundated with smoke and water. now, there was one minor injury, that's it thank goodness. in the east bay, alameda county firefighters put out a

small fire in the attic of a home in san leandro. they responded to the house behind the middle school this afternoon. sky 7 gives you a look at the response. the fire there was put out within a few minutes. those real ids from california's dmv may not be real enough. homeland security says the state's requirements for the upgraded ids just don't make the grade. "abc 7 news" reporter vic lee has a look at what that means for you if you already have a real id. >> reporter: the day after christmas, a slow day everywhere except at the dmv. the field office on fell street in san francisco was packed as always. many were here to get their real ids. mitchell bonner showed us his. he knew all about the dmvs latest controversy. >> well, it is government. i used to work for the government. >> reporter: millions of californians got new ids this year, but homeland security says the process dmv used doesn't meet federal standards. homeland security requires at least two documents to prove

where you live. dmv requires only one proof of residency. the department defends its process by saying the second verification of address comes indirectly. >> the second proof of residency would be satisfied when the real id driver license or id card is delivered by mail to the applicant and return service is requested. >> reporter: if the applicant doesn't live at that address, the id returns to the dmv. the department, however, intends to correct the procedure beginning in april. it will require two residency documents. >> things like a mortgage or lease agreement, a phone bill, a bank statement, even your vehicle registration card. >> reporter: meantime, homeland security says it will accept the ids issued before app applicants like gianna aren't taking chances. she came loaded with documents. >> i'm an overachiever, so i brought in like five. i didn't want to have to come

back. >> reporter: you're safe. this is the latest problem facing the dmv. was harshly criticized for long wait times at field offices. vic lee, "abc 7 news". and as we wrap up the holiday season, we are adding up how much americans spent. by some estimates, sales reached $850 billion. that's a 5% increase from last year, but the increase in revenue comes at a cost for some retailers. "abc 7 news" report aun aun aunn explains. >> reporter: you can see lights are out here at berkley. economists and retailers seem encouraged by strong numbers, but strong sales doesn't translate into strong profits. patti moody is happy with this year's holiday sales but she is feeling the pressure from online competition. >> bottom line, i don't think it will be as strong because we've had to discount, but our sales were good. >> reporter: moody says her

store usually has after christmas sales but not this year. the new trend from online giants like amazon was big pre-christmas sales. >> with the internet, the internet, some lines are going on sale before christmas. so we have to really watch what's happening online. >> reporter: a new report by mastercard company suggests online sales grew by more than 20% this holiday season, but giovanni with the school of business says department store it is and mom and pop shops feel the squeeze from online competition and now online giants are dictating trends as well. >> we are in an era of where a few players tend to sort of benefit from spending in this case because they're able to adjust faster to the transformation, to the way the economy is going. >> reporter: hector perez and his family said they split their holiday shopping this year. >> we overspent, as we do every year, and we probably did half of it online and half of it the conventional way. >> reporter: foot traffic helps

bay hills, where we will find the highest wind gusts over the next 24 hours. really, what to expect under this wind advisory tomorrow, most of us will feel the north wind tomorrow, about 20 to 30 miles per hour. on a ridge top we could see gusts close to 55 miles per hour. it is the time of the year. we have a lot of outdoor decorations during the holiday season, so a really good idea to secure any of the outdoor objects tonight before the wind will pick up tomorrow. tonight though, temperatures are slowly falling back into the 40s and into the 50s. 49 right now in fairfield. holding about 55 in san mateo. 45 in gilroy and oaken right now at about 53 degrees. over the next 12 hours tonight, those numbers away from the coast will get cold out there. in north bay and the inland east bay as well, some of the coldest temperatures will drop well into the 30s. closer to the water, low to mid 40s is the overnight lows over the next 12 hours. what we're tracking in the big torrey, live doppler 7 along with satellite, low pressure moving into the pacific

northwest bringing rain to portland and seattle. for california, it will drag a cold front through overnight tonight and tomorrow. unfortunately, it moves through here rain-free. what it does, it kicks up our winds tomorrow. future tracker wind gusts, tomorrow morning we first see the winds increase in the north bay, close to 20 miles per hour. area-wide, those winds will ramp up into the afternoon, into the evening. so by 6:00 on your thursday evening, those gusts are close to 30 miles per hour. your 12-hour day planner on your thursday, it is a sunny day once the sun gets up here, but it will be rather breezy. we will see the temperatures mainly in the afternoon in the upper 50s for the most part, but with that wind out of the north, about 20 to 30 miles per hour for many of us, it will feel cooler than that. highs on your thursday, 57 for san francisco. about 58 in oakland. the same in san jose. 59 in napa and livermore, up to about 56 degrees with the afternoon wind. if you are traveling across the state tomorrow, despite the wind it is a nice-looking day.

record-setting day for the dow. abc news reporter dave packer explains what is going on with the market. >> reporter: the dow jones saw its biggest one day point gain ever, rising 1,086 points. wednesday's big comeback after the dow posted its worst christmas eve decline. >> it has been a brutal mont m a for stocks. >> reporter: a partial government shutdown, secretary steve mnuchen's questions about bank health and signs that the president could be about to fire fed chairman powell. but assurances from the white house that the fed chair's job is safe helped send stocks higher wednesday. the dow's 1,000-plus rebound not the only bright stop. the s&p 500 and nasdaq rising 113 and 152 points respectively. many expect the volatility on wall street could continue.

indonesia's government is warning people living near a volcano to avoid costal areas after a volcano eruption triggered a giant wave on saturday that killed 434 people. it drove thousands of others from their homes. high waves and heavy rain are expected today. there's also a fear of a landslide triggering a tsunami because the cliffs of the volcano's crater could collapse into the sea. today marks the 14th anniversary of a tsunami that killed nearly a quarter million people in southern asia. on december 26, 2004, -- can you believe it's been this long -- a 9.1 magnitude earthquake beneath the indian ocean triggered a 100-foot-tall tsunami. more than 230,000 people lost their lives in 14 countries, making it one of the deadliest natural disasters in recorded history. >> that tsunami is known as the

and we are taking a live look at san francisco international airport because today is one of the busiest travel days of the year. airlines in the u.s. expect to handle nearly three million passengers today. aaa estimates about 112 million americans are traveling during the long holiday weekend. the busiest day of the year is sunday after thanksgiving.
