there. sensors are green. developing news from the central california area where the manhunt continues for the hunt from a killer of a police officer. >> he is in the country illegally. will carr has the latest from newman. >> reporter: good morning. authorities have been working around the clock. they served a search warrant overnight and reloosed new pictures of the suspect. he is still on the road. he allegedly entered the country illegally. at the same time, we are hearing from the people who new corporal ronil singh the best. the chief says he is leaving behind a wife and a 5-month-old son. >> he will never see his son walk. he doesn't get to hold that little boy, hug his wife, good night anymore because a

coward took his life. >> reporter: officer singh was a native of fiji. he came to the united states to become a police officer. he leaves behind his canine partner sam, who will officially be retired and join the singh family permanently. the chief says he will not take another loved one from that family. alexis and jessica, back to you. in the east bay, the case against the man accused of murdering an 18-year-old woman the at an oakland bart station is delayed. yesterday a judge ordered psychiatrists to examine john cowell to determine whether he is competent to stand trial. he is accused of attacking nia wilson and her sister at random with a knife at macarthur bart station in july. his attorney said her client is showing signs of delusion and paranoia. her family said he is able to

stand trial no matter what his defense attorney says. the judge has scheduled a hearing on cowell's psychiatric report for february. wilson's family is still pushing for a death penalty trial. the partial government shutdown will likely continue into the new year and be taken up by the new congress. today is the seventh day of the shutdown. negotiations appear to be going nowhere. the president is blaming congressman nancy pelosi for keeping the government closed despite him repeatedly saying he wants the shutdown to continue until he gets funding for the border wall. >> she's calling the shots. she's calling them because she wants the votes. if they do something, she is not going to get the votes and not going to be speaker of the house. >> pelosi is promising to fund the government but not the wall. when democrats take control of the house next week. lawmakers have been told they will receive a 24-hour notice before having to return for a

vote if there is a deal toned the sh, to end the shutdown. a democrat of hawaii says she will donate to food banks across her state. she said more than 2,500 federal workers there are furloughed or working without pay. she donated her salary during previous government shutdowns earlier this year and in the year 2013. some popular bay area tourist sites are feeling the financial fallout of the shutdown. alcatraz has tours canceled. national parks are open with limited visitor services. many parking lots, restrooms and visitor facilities remain closed at several bay area beaches. we have posted a complete list on abc7news.com. iraqi leaders are demanding u.s. troops leave the country after president trump's surprise visit two days ago. the president greeted the troops at a refueling stop at

mendoza who escaped from san quentin wednesday night. >> police believe he simply walked away from a work detail. he carjacked a woman at a shopping center one mile away. the woman is sharing her terrifying ordeal. amy hollyfield is live with the interview you will see only on 7. amy. >> reporter: jessica, we also have surveillance of the carjacking. you can see the man approach the victim, who tells us she was scared to death. she says he approached her in the home depot parking lot wednesday night. that is the same night that a man escaped from san quentin prison. it happened in san rafael. home depot in san rafael, less than two miles from the prison. he threatened to kill her. >> he came really fast. he said i have a gun. give me your key. if not, i'm going to kill you

now. >> here is a picture of the man who escaped. she said this is the man who stole her car in that parking lot. authorities are still looking for him. they encourage you to take a good look. they need everyone to be looking for this man. they are also still looking for her car they believe he got away in. take a look at this one as well. it's a silver toyota rav4. the license plate is 6stz502. no one has seen the the car. no one has seen him. no sightings have been reported. he was here in san quentin serving a five-year since for a carjacking in l.a. county. officials have not publicly commented about this. they haven't explained how he was able to escape. >> amy, thank you. another manhunt. federal and local authorities are searching for a suspect who

shot and killed an officer in the town of newman in stanislaus. authorities are desperately searching for this man. the sheriff's department tweeted new photos of the suspect last night. the sheriff says key findings helped to narrow down who he is. a man who uses multiple aliases. they won't confirm his name >> we have identified a suspect. we know who our suspect is. we know who is responsible for this senseless act of violence. it's just a matter of time before we find him. corporal singh was shot on christmas morning. the suspect fled the scene. the sheriff has spoken to the singh family and they are working on funeral arrangements with the family. the sheriff's department says there is only one authorized fund set up for the family of corporal singh. it is through the stanislas sworn deputies association. we have a atlantic on abc7news.com. dozens of members of blue

stolen, but it was not the car involved in the shooting. but for some reason police say 24-year-old jenny vasquez and her female passenger led police on a high-speed five-mile-chase. the pursuit ended when the car crashed into a fence. the women were shot when vasquez tried to back into a police car. >> the individuals were in a stolen vehicle, that took police on a high-speed pursuit. i stop short of the mistaken identity type of issue. no, they weren't the suspects in the shooting. but also had they not been in a stolen vehicle, had they not led police in a high-speed pursuit, had they not tried to ram officers's cars, we would not be here today. >> the women's parents are calling for a federal investigation. bill scott will announce a statewide pilot program to crack statewide pilot program to crack down on repeat dui offenders. drivers with more than one dui will have to install an ignition interlock device and
