i spoke with the airport manager a few hours ago. he said it was a miracle. his big concern, these trees right here. it's a completely different scenario. >> sky 7 was over the scene of the crash after two pilots made an emergency landing. >> the words would not be appropriate for tv but it was pretty crazy. >> he and his friends saw the helicopter as it started to quickly fall from the sky. they were one hole behind from where the chopper came down. >> strongest to the right and regain control and then maintained control. >> airport officials said it could have the wingspan of up to six feet and hit the windshield shortly after the pilots took off. it was a student pilot flying and immediately took over after being hit. >> it was a miraculous landing

and maintains directional flight for the helicopter and was impaired. and the instructor was able to still land the helicopter safely. >> that doesn't look good at all. >> they were amazed no one was injured in the crash. >> that's an incredible pilot. the way it was out of control, to land it the way it is, that's pretty amazing. that's skill. >> the two pilots were able to walk away shaken up and even though no one was injured the ntsb will still investigate. >> all right. thank you so much. crews plan to return to cut down trees at people's park in berkeley tomorrow after a protest erupted this morning stopping the work. >> abc 7 news was in people's park when protestors as you see confronted workers. crews stopped working a short time later.

uc berkeley owns the park. a spokesman told us trees are being removed as part of a plan to catch up on deferred maintenance on several properties. >> if they had a plan like this two years ago, why not post it around the park so people know what they plan on doing. but they don't want to do this. they want the people around the park and the people that use the park to be ignorant of their plans for the park. >> campus police plan to have more officers on hand when crews return early tomorrow morning. >> sears ceo made a takeover bid this afternoon after a deadline expired to find a buyer for the bankrupt retailer. that's according to the new york times. today's proposed $4.6 billion deal might provide sears it's only chance to avoid being liquida liquidated. 425 sears stores would stay open. roughly 50,000 employees would keep their jobs. but another 18,000 workers would lose their jobs. sears also owns k-mart.

a bankruptcy court must still approve the sale of sears. >> he'll join tesla's board of directors. ellison will serve on the board along with a top walgreens executive. he secured funding to take tesla private. tesla paid $20 million in penalties and musk agreed to step down as chairman to settle complaints against him. >> a program to combat drunk driving in california goes into effect on new year's day. today's launch coincides with heightened efforts across the bay area to promote safe and sober driving during the holiday season. senate bill 1046 mandates admission interlock devices for all repeat dui offenders and first time offenders that want to continue to drive rather than have a suspended license. a driver has to blow into the device to check blood alcohol levels in order for the car to

he escaped from the prison wednesday night and carjacked a woman at a nearby shopping center. >> that carjacking victim spoke exclusively with abc 7 news and cornell is live with the story. >> yeah, that carjacking victim says she feared for her life. when she was approached by a man believed to be escapee mendoza that's now been on the run for two days. so far no tips from the public and no sightings of him. >> where is the san quentin escapee on the run for almost two days. >> do you have any idea where this man might be? >> right now we don't. >> police are on the look out for the 21-year-old escaped convict that may be driving this 2011 silver toyota rav 4 with a license plate number of 6stz502. >> makes me very

very nervous. >> being carjacked by a man believed to be mendoza in home depot parking lot. the suspect approaches her. >> he just came up very fast and he just said i have a gun. give me your key. if not, i'm going to kill you now. >> he was serving a five year sentence for using a deadly weapon during a carjacking in l.a. county. prison officials have not explained how he escaped. only saying mendoza was assigned to workoutside the security perimeter on a work crew and he took advantage of that and walked away. he may have been cleaning a pumping station not far from the west gate. sky 7 was over the area where waste water is pumped out to the sanitation agency a half mile away. it's common for inmates to maintain that pumping station.

deaths of two migrant children while in federal custody. reporters did not accompany her when she visited border patrol patients working near texas. he promised more thorough medical screenings for detained children after an 8-year-old boy died on monday. she plans to visit the border tomorrow. nonprofit groups are racing to find places to house migrants released by i.c.e. in el paso. one charity helped 1,300 people during the past five days. >> we were not aware this was going to happen. we were not informed that this was going to happen. i found out on sunday when i began to receive phone calls from the police department all of these refugees had been released by i.c.e. to the street. >> i.c.e. issued a statement. they blamed it on inaction by congress and it's attempts to comply with federal laws for detaining families with
