visibility. we've got the 30 throughout the early morning hours. in the low to mid-50s by noontime. a lot of sunshine. it will be slightly cooler today. we have more ground to cover from starting out sodry. the dew points are low. as a result it's a cooler afternoon. that sun setting just before 5:00. chris. >> thank you. this morning a total of 8 people are in custody suspected in the death of corporal ronil singh. the 33-year-old offers was sht and killed in newman after christmas. they released in booking photo of the sfukt. 32-year-old gustavo arriaga perez. they say he was trying to flee to mexico. they arrested seven others including these four. arriaga girlfriend, two brothers and a coworker. the 7 suspects including three not pictured are accused of either misleading authorities

about arriaga's whereabouts or helping him evade authorities for two days. as authorities continue the investigation, the newman community is coming together to remember corporal singh. last night thousands attended an emotional vigil. abc 7 news reporter amanda del castillo was there. >> in front cht crowd of trues thousands, the family the corporal leaves behind, his wife, 5-month-old son his canine sam and others. the surrounding crowd did not surprise the singh family. >> i know ron. ron -- he was just that kind of a person. >> testimony through tears and the thin blue line. many tell abc 7 news the vigil is proof that small town spirit is stronger than one might assume. >> we come out when someone is hurt, in need of a she of faith. >> a faith tested wednesday morning when police say this man, gust an perez arriaga shot and killed singh during a traffic stop.

family of corporal singh, the shfrds says there is one authorized fund set up threw the stanislaus sworn deputies association association. if you'd like to donate we have a link on our website. abc7news.com. this morning we learn more about the arrest in the case. the sheriffs department confirms to abc news that this is a picture of the suspected shooter gustavo perez arriaga. in custody. a family friend of corporal singh posted it to facebook. he got it from a law enforcement source. arriaga was taken into custody in lamont nar bakersfield, about 2 had hundred miles south of where the shooting happened. he was returned to the stanislaus county. >> officers sirinek's handcuffs were brought down and they're on that guy. for his trip home. >> three of the eight suspects

are reportedly in the skroe are country illegally, including arriaga one of his brothers. adrian virgen and erik razo quiroz. the case is putting the issue of illegal immigration back in the spotlight. the stanislaus county sheriff spoke at length about how he believes sanctuary laws impact public safety. melanie woodrow has that part of the coverage. >> why are we providing sanctuary for criminals, gang members? it's a conversation we need to have. >> stanislaus county sheriff kmam adam christensen saying the death could have been prevented. he says the suspect who shot officer singh during a traffic stop was in the country illegally from mexico. the sheriff says arriaga had two prior dui arrests was a known gang member. >> law enforcement should be able to turn people over to i.c.e. who are kmieting crimes, mo are gang members

abvictimizing and exploiting others. >> president trump tweeted about the manhunt for arriaga, time to get tough on border security. build the wall. last year the sheriff appeared at a round table alongside president trump today he wouldn't speak about the president. >> i'm not here to talk about the president of the united states but i will repeat what i said before. border security goes hand in hand with national security, goes hand in hand with public safety. goes hand in hand with the safety of our community. >> law enforcement officials found arriaga near bakersfield, the kern county sheriff had this to say. >> when you tie our mands and don't allow us to work with our federal partners and communicate with our federal partners about people that commit crimes and in this country illegally we're going to have incidents like this not just on police officers but on the public we serve and protect. >> reporter: still kern county sheriff called the immigration status secondary in the case. a reporter asked the stanislaus

news that the trees are cut down to kauch up on maintenance. people's park is located a few blocks south of the main campus. it's been the scene of many controversies and protects since the 1960s. >> hasn't reached historical landmark status yet they're trying to to tear it down before it reaches rarmg status which would be next summer. >> the university they say should have been doing a better job of informing the public about the plans to cut trees. > mo t 1,700 people signed a petition to save this library. it's been working with the department of work to replace the trees. a department organizer the appealed theization decision saying the clearing of trees to help maintenance costs.

peninsula looking at upper 30s in oakland and 42 in fremont. 38 in napa. 34 santa rosa. we get the coldest temperatures right around or after sunrise at 7:34 o 24. certainly the numbers continue to drop. look at the winds. mount st. helena 28 miles an hour, 46 miles an hour wind gusts around diablo. but overall the numbers dropped off considerable this morning. the dew points lower less humidpy and then the cold air pools in the valleys. we are looking at chilly numbers possible frost. dry into new year's eve weekend and looking at rain next friday. overnight lows have been on the cool side of course but the average low for some of our north bay valleys really should be in the 30s. but look what happens after monday. it looks like we drop off and see temperatures again below the freezing mark in many of the valleys. we also have a beach hazard

let's get up and get going. >> this is abc 7 mornings. thanks for being with us. i'm chris nguyen. wree are we're starting with a quick look at the weather. here is loo is a tracking the conditions where you live. it's chilly out there. brisk winds in the upper elevations. but at the surface things are later in terms of winds. with lower dew points we are cold. 34 in pleasen and 32 in danville. patchy frost. 9 in oakland with 36 in noft an. closer to the bay in the mitt 40s in san francisco. 49 in pacifica. bundle up or wait a while. we are anywhere from 4 to 14 degrees colder this morning.

and we'll be looking at a slow warmup. 10:00 in the 40s in concord. plenty of sunshine but not a lot to help us out in terms of temperatures because we'll be in the low to mid-50s. by the afternoon the northwest winds can continue to keep it on the cool side with low to mid-50s for the warmest locations. we'll talk about new year's eve and new year's day, how cold it will be and whether or not we see rain for the first week of the year coming up. >> thank you. happening today, homeland security secretary kirstin kneelsen plans to visit the border near yuma border. she plans to visit following the deaths of two migrant children dying while in custody. she promised quote more author o medical screening for detained children after an 8-year-old boy died monday. president trump cancelled his trip to mar-a-lago for the second time this holiday season

as the government shutdown continues into the eighth day. the president wants money for the border wall and the democrats are refusing to provide it. president trump tweeted a threat to close the southern border entirely if they don't. meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of federal workers are furloughed or working out pay. the u.s. coast guard found out they will get paid for the past week of work but future paycheck aren't guaranteed. our reporter explains how this is impacting local families. >> yeah. >> the children are happy but there is stress behind the mother's miles. >> we're a proud coast guard family but there ares sacrifces we have to make we never thought not getting a paycheck was one of enemy. >> sister in law kristine and amb amber kroll's husband rg both members of the coast guard the only branch of military not getting paid during the shutdown. >> our husband rg going to work every day. doing everything they always do.

>> about we asked the coast guard how many members were fuloughed locally but the person providing the answer has been furloughed. the coast guard saying the longer the shutdown lasts the more difficult for the coast guard to maintain mission readiness. >> people are afraid they're not able to make rent, not able to pay bills. >> a one-time emergency action is allowing coast guard members to get the december 31st paycheck but everything else up in the air. >> well, great in the moment it's just a band aid. and we still need to figure out what's happening if they can't come to revelation. >> yes we will be be back payed do i like rook at my child and say i'll feed you eventually. that's clearly not an option. >> there are some resources in place to financially assist military families such as loan programs and the coast guard mutual assistance. kristine kroll tells me her family did not kwuf.

she has calmed dozens of lawmakers across california to share her family stories and many others like their. abc 7 news. sht shutdown is impacting yosemite. the park says it's closing camp. it's because of the impacts from human waste and public safety concerns. all park visitors centers are closed and dogs are banned on all trails. the badger pass ski area lodging, dining and retail stores remain open. for a complete list of what's open and closed during the federal government shutdown, just go to our website, abc7news.com. an expanded program to combat drunk driving in california goes into effect on new year's day. senate bill 1046 requires ig ignition interlock devices for repeat dui offenders and first-time offenders who want to continue to drive rather than have a suspended license.

a driver has to blow into the device to check blood alcohol levels for the car to start. >> ignition interlock devices are a game changer in the fight to stop the revolving door of repeat offenders. >> an interlock pilot program has been in effect in some california counties since 2011 including alameda county. the devices prevented people from drinking and driving more than a million times. every year in california drunk driving kills 1,000 people and injures 20,000 others. it's the end of an era for a shoe repair shop on the peninsula. two cobblers are both retiring after running their shop four decades. abc 7 news reporter david louie has the story from san mateo. >> came in to say goodbye. >> thank you. >> a steady extreme of longtime customers have been filing since. they kept the name of a previous

her full accuweather forecast is just moments away. a miracle rescue at a french ski resort after a 12-year-old boy was caught in a avalanche. he was buried for about an hour before rescuers pulled him out alive. james longman has the story. >> reporter: the sights and sounds of this chopper perhaps the best gift this 12-year-old could ask for a young boy found himself buried in snow and ice for 40 minutes. more than double the amount of time believed to be survivable. the young skier was on a closed black diamond run at a popular ski resort in the french al. s when suddenly trapped in the aftermath of an avalanche. he was able to be located with the help of a rescue dog. the canine put his nose on the snow and scratched with his paw. the rescue team arrived less than 30 minutes later. racing to save the youth trapped beneath the snow and ice. rescue workers feared he had 15
