live where you live, this is abc7 news. >> you know we wrapped up his arm because that was bleeding quite a bit. >> developing news tonight, san jose's mayor is hospitalized after being struck by an suv while out psyching. good evening. i'm ama daetz. >> i'm kristen sze. mayor sam liccardo was hit on salt lake drive around 12:30 this afternoon. kate larsson is live at san jose regional medical center where he's being treated. >> reporter: mayor lick card doe does have broken bones and will be spending the night here at regional medical center. in a statement he thanked a san jose woman for helping him after the crash. we will spoke to her about what happened. >> she's like you know, i just heard some screaming and so we

of accidents and hopes safety improvements will be made. >> it's one of those streets that's a straight shot. people love racing up and down it. >> reporter: released a statement tonight which says i'd like to thank compassionate neighbors like linda and tom who rushed to help immediately after the accident. the fast and professional response from fire station 19 and the san jose police department, and the outstanding medical attention from dr. jimenez and the entire staff at regional medical center. the mayor joked the doctors said any defects to his head were pre-existing. he still has a sense of humor and expected to return home in a few days. kate larsson, abc7 news. >> that is good to hear. thank you. in the east bay, a 6-year-old girl is recovering tonight after being struck in the head with a stranger's celebratory gunfire. the girl's family was outside a home in oakland near the zoo

watching fireworks when she was hit. carlos an say doe is live outside ucsf in oakland. carlos? >> reporter: well, the girl is expected to survive, but the bullet could remain in her head for the rest of her life. tonight we've learned this is not the first time that the neighborhood has been terrorized by flying buts. what was supposed to be a special night to ring in the new year turned into a near tragedy in the backyard of this home on thermal street in east oakland. family and friends were watching fireworks past midnight when the a flying bullet struck a 6-year-old girl right in the head. >> i'm actually sad that this happened to them on their watch. >> reporter: next door neighbor latoya keller says hearing gunfire is common at the stroke of midnight during new year's. last year her mom's front windshield was hit with a bullet while the car was parked in the driveway. >> that's the reason i stay home because people are doing what they shouldn't be. >> reporter: police say this

time around, another vehicle was struck by gunfire. shotspotter technology picked up multiple gunshots fired around the time the little girl was hit. the bullet could have come from anywhere within just short of a mile away. police chief anne kirkpatrick visited the girl at the hospital. her message for 2019. >> put the guns down. it is foolishness. it is unnecessary. and in this case, quite an innocent child was affected and harmed by this foolishness. >> reporter: residents agree. celebratory gunfire has no place in oakland. >> obviously, this is a dangerous celebration so people south carolina stop doing it. >> reporter: and polices are offering a reward of up to $5,000 to anyone who has information that could lead to an arrest. reporting in oakland, carlos salcedo, abc7 news. >> thank you. the new year marks a somber

anniversary, ten years since the death of oscar grant. tonight images of granted in messages of racial justice were projected on the exterior of the fruitdale b.a.r.t. station where he was killed on new year's day of 2009. earlier in the day we were at the station whereas his family held a vigil for him. grant's 14-year-old daughter was among those at the vigil. >> it's sad because like i don't have my father but it's a good thing that i see people that support and come out and take their time to be here for him. >> grant's family says changing society is part of his legacy saying they've helped champion three recent laws designed todd increase officer accountability and prevent racial profiling. >> the new year kicked off with chilly blue skies. it was crystal clear for most of the bay area which provided for some stunning first sunsets is of the year.

ryan know exhibit two days after a dead lie lion attacking in north carolina. as natalie brunell reports, authorities are investigating both incidents. >> reporter: a 2-year-old girl is recovering at an orlando hospital after falling into this rhino exhibit today at the zoo in melbourne, florida. >> a 1-year-old who fell into the ryan know pen. pinned up against the wall. she's conscious at this time. >> reporter: zoo officials say she stumbled and fell between the poles of a hands on experience of rhino encounter. one of them reportedly making connect contact with the girl. this photo showing her little shoe left behind. her father saying she's doing well and that it's been a trying day for the family. the incident coming just two days after a deadly lion attack in burlington, north carolina. >> the person that was attacked, how bad are they hurt? >> incapacitated. >> alexandra black killed less than two weeks into an

internship at the center when a male lion escaped a locked enclosure while she was doing routine clean. neighbors saying that wasn't the first time a lion escaped. >> we were all very upset about her death and what had happened to her. and i guess we were just hoping something good could come out of it, that more safety regulations coz happen and we just want to know that it is safe so nothin liking this ever happens again. >> reporter: the lion was shot and killed so deputies could retrieve black's body and the center is shut down while authorities investigate the attack. abc news, los angeles. >> you may remember that deadly tying ter attack at san francisco zoos on christmas day in 2007. the animal escaped and killed carlos souza junior. a government report found souza and his friends provoked antoined. the zoo has made since safety
