abc's lynda lopez is here with details. good morning, lynda. >> reporter: good morning, marcus. hundreds of thousands of federal workers are waiting to hear about any movement toward possibly re-opening the government. it looks like the president and democratic leaders will at least sit down at the white house today to talk for the first time in more than three weeks. signs of possible progress in the stalemate over border funding that has the partial government shutdown dragging into day 12. president trump suggesting to fox news he's ready to deal. >> i'm here. i'm ready to go. it's very important to a lot of people are looking to get their paycheck, and so i'm ready to go any time they want. >> reporter: but is standing firm on his demand for $5 billion in a funding for a border wall. now president trump has invited speaker designate nancy pelosi and senate minority leader chuck schumer to the white house today along with republican leaders. but white house press secretary sarah sanders saying they're being invited for a border security briefing from senior homeland security officials. the meeting will be the first

between pelosi, schumer and president trump since their contentious meeting in front of the press. >> i will take the mantle. i will be the one to shut it down. i'm not going to blame you for it. >> reporter: but with democrats set to take control of the house when they come back into session tomorrow, president trump tweeted directly at pelosi tuesday saying, let's make a deal. pelosi firing back in a tweet saying, the president has given democrats a great opportunity to show how we will govern responsibly and quickly pass our plan to end the irresponsible trump shutdown. but the house democrats' plan to end the shutdown, two bills announced monday, does not include $5 billion for border wall funding, which the white house has already said is a nonstarter. the democrats' plan, in fact, keeps funding for border security for the department of homeland security at its current level of 1.3 billion and would only re-open dhs for about a month. janai. >> we will see if there's movement on either side today. lynda lopez, thank you. u.s. border officials are defending their actions this

morning following another clash with migrants. they fired tear gas into mexico after a group of migrants tried to cross into the u.s. into san diego from tijuana. witnesses say some people were lifting toddlers through razor wire. but officials insist the tear gas was aimed at breaking up what they describe as, quote, a violent mob of migrants who were throwing rocks. >> our agents responded with the least amount of force they possibly could to protect themselves and the border and did actually secure the border in this area. >> customs and border protection said 25 people were arrested and the incident is now under internal review. it follows a similar confrontation in november when tear gas was fired near mothers with their small children. mitt romney is slamming president trump as he prepares to be sworn into the senate tomorrow. in a scathing "washington post" op-ed, romney wrote that trump's character has fallen short and his conduct has not risen to the mantle of the office. he also said the departures of

jim mattis and chief of staff john kelly marked a decline in the presidency. the president's campaign manager fired back saying romney lacked the ability to save the nation and trump has saved it. there are new details this morning about an american citizen arrested in russia accused of spying. relatives of the u.s. marine veteran who served in iraq insist he did nothing wrong. they say he was in moscow to attend a friend's wedding and now he is facing years in prison. abc's james longman has more. >> reporter: the family of paul whelan speaking out, the former marine placed under arrest in moscow accused of being a spy. >> the only goal, the only idea we have is to get him back. >> reporter: david whelan says his brother was in russia and toured moscow with friends the friday he vanished. >> we realized something had gone wrong and that paul wasn't where he was supposed to be but no one knew where he was. >> reporter: on sundrids filed a missing persons report then russian security services put out the statement saying they have initiated a criminal case against a u.s.

citizen under article 276 of the criminal code of the russian federation. article 276, espionage. he's being held by authorities in russia but his brother firmly denies the allegations. >> there's no chance that paul was engaged in espionage in russia. >> reporter: the 48-year-old heads up security for a michigan based auto parts facility but has a checkered past in the u.s. armed forces. after two tours in iraq he was discharged for larceny. a self-proclaimed russiaphile, he was active on russian social media. spy scandals have long been part of the theater of the two nations. it comes two weeks after the guilty plea of maria butina who admitted to infiltrating political circles to influence u.s./russia relations. no word yet from the state department whether or not they've spoken to whelan. the charges against him are serious and if convicted he would spend a minimum of ten years in prison. james longman, abc news, london.

and in england police have detained a suspect in a new year's eve terror incident at a train station in manchester. authorities say the 25-year-old suspect is being held under the mental health act and is refusing to cooperate. police say he stabbed three people including a police officer with a kitchen knife. all expected to recover and it does appear they say that he acted alone. an illinois priest under a criminal investigation for child sex abuse is missing. reverend roger mcgrath is accused of sexually abusing a student in the 1990s when he led a catholic high school. the 72-year-old was removed from the public ministry in 2017. church officials say he moved out of the friary in the last couple of months and has not been seen since. time now for a look at your weather on this wednesday morning. good morning. unsettled weather for texas with a mix in the center part of the state leaning over to snow going into new mexico and heavy showers coming out of the eastern side and leaning towards the lower mississippi valley region.

found in the rubble of an apartment collapse in russia. the 11-month-old boy is in serious condition. he was discovered 36 hours after a suspected gas explosion leveled the building. authorities say he likely survived because he was in a crib. at least nine people died in the blast. dozens are still missing. >> an incredible rescue there. this morning, police are investigating a deadly shooting inside a casino in nevada. an armed man allegedly pulled his gun when confronted by security guards at the suburban las vegas casino and they opened fire. no one else was injured. it's unknown this morning why that man was carrying a gun. the reward is up to $35,000 in connection with the death of a little girl in the houston area. 7-year-old jazmine barnes was with her family in a car when she was shot. her mother was also shot but survived. police say the gunman apparently picked the family at random. investigators have this blurry surveillance pho pickup truck that they believe was used by the shooter. well, there was one winner in last night's jumbo mega

millions jackpot. the grand prize was worth $425 million, and here are the winning numbers, 34, 44, 57, 62, 70 and then the mega ball was 14. lottery officials say only one winning ticket was sold on new york's long island and this was the second mega millions jackpot that's been won on new year's day. >> somebody starting off 2019 very lucky. a kentucky distillery is using technology to emulate the taste of century old bourbon. the whiskeymaker says they're able to separate the liquor's ingredients into different chemical compounds and then compare those compounds to really old bourbon. the result, whiskey that tastes like it's 100 years old, which is said to have more butterscotch notes. yeah. well, coming up, a mystery air scare as several passengers get sick on a plane. what went wrong? a little girl fall nothiing into a rhino exhi a zoo.

one pill a day, 24 hours, zero heartburn. welcome back. welcome back. now to the scare at a florida zoo where a toddler fell into a rhino enclosure. >> the zoo says that little girl stumbled and fell through steel poles. >> it comes just days after a worker was killed by a lion at a north carolina conservatory center. the accidents are raising questions about zoo safety. abc's natalie brunell reports. >> reporter: a 2-year-old girl is recovering at an orlando hospital after falling into this rhino exhibit tuesday at the zoo in melbourne, florida. >> we have a 1-year-old who fell into the rhino pit, is pinned up against the wall. she's conscious at this time. >> reporter: zoo officials say the toddler stumbled and fell between the poles of a hands-on experience called the rhino encounter where visitors can touch the animals. >> they're going to react to anything new in their exhibit and startle them, and any time something that large makes

contact with a person, there is the opportunity to get hurt, and that's why we have bars in between. this is one of those, you know, sort of i want to say unfortunate incidents. >> reporter: one of the rhinos reportedly making contact with the girl. this photo showing her little shoe left behind. her father releasing a statement saying she's doing well and that it's been a trying day for the family. the terrifying incident coming just days after a deadly lion attack at the conservators center in burlington, north carolina. >> the person that was attacked, how bad are they hurt? >> they're incapacitated. >> reporter: 22-year-old alexandra black killed less than two weeks into an internship at the center when a male lion escaped while black was doing a routine cleaning and neighbors now demanding more oversight saying that wasn't the first time a lion had escaped. >> we were just really all about her death and what had happened to her. and i guess we're just hoping something good could come out of it. you know, that more safety regulations could happen and we just want to know that it is safe so nothing like this ever

happens again. >> the lion was shot and killed so deputies could retrieve black's body and the center is now shut down indefinitely while authorities investigate the attack. natalie brunell, abc news, los angeles. airport water fountains may be to blame for sickening some passengers on a frontier airlines flight. six passengers were removed from the flight from cleveland to tampa. they were treated and have since been released thankfully. an official says water from fountains at cleveland's airport may be connected to their illnesses. for now those water fountains have been turned off and water quality tests will be performed today. a very special college football fan is being remembered for his brave fight against cancer. tyler trent was an honorary captain of the purdue boilermakers at last week's bowl game. he suffered from a rare form of bone cancer. tyler passed away yesterday at the age of 20. purdue's football program tweeting overnight saying that trent will be our

forever captain. >> certainly will be missed. on a much lighter note a rarely seen tennis quote battle of the sexes, if you will. two of the greatest ever, serena williams and roger federer along with their mixed doubles partners facing off on the court for the first time. i mean, this was history being made. federer and his partner won the match. afterward they posed for a selfie. williams and federer did. the two of them have won 43 grand slam titles combined. >> g.o.a.t. versus g.o.a.t. now to some college football. texas, for you, pulled off an upset in last night's sugar bowl. >> yeah, lockhorns quarterback sam ehlinger ran three touchdowns against georgia. the dogs scored late but couldn't get close enough. texas sends their fans home after a 28-21 win. >> but the evening might be best remembered for some mascot mayhem. look at this wild scene. the longhorn steer from texas named bevo busted out of his pen seeming to go after georgia's bulldog almost like an omen. thankfully bevo was quickly back

matt keller is live in san jose. matt? >> reporter: good morning. work being done by city crews as they try to get a light pole back up and take care of some of the damage done on king. you can see the damage down to the police vehicle. the officer had to be loaded onto a backboard by paramedics. he was taken to the hospital. the sergeant on the scene said his injuries did not appear to be too serious. the crash happened at 2:00 this morning. they didn't have any details what led up to the crash. but the driver of the other honda suv claimed he had a green light and the police car came out of nowhere and smashed into him. there were multiple people in the suv. they said they have minor injuries but did not want to be taken to the hospital. they are still waiting to talk to the officers inside the hospital to get his statement on what exactly happened this morning. reporting live in san jose, matt

keller, abc 7 news. matt, thank you. a flight from san francisco to chicago had to make an emergency landing because of a problem with the plane's landing gear. united airlines said no one was hurt. incident was headed to o'hare and landed safely late last night. the passengers were helped off the plane and loaded onto a bus and taken to the terminal. hi, everybody. just to reinforce how dry it is. 10 means unlimited visibility. east bay hills, yesterday and the day before it was just shaking out of control. incident was shivering almost. now hard live moving whatsoever. that's why we are so cold this morning. 32 to 37 at 7:00 inland and bay. 51 to 55 at noon. 53 to 55 with total sunshine at 4:00. dropping to 42 to 8 by 7:00.
