so many of your commutes just got more expensive. the first of three toll hikes went into effect this morning for most bay area bridges. when it's all said and done, some drivers will ending up shelling out $9 to cross. hi there, i'm reggie aqui. thanks for joining us. so are drivers cool with the higher priced commutes and where is that money going anyway? amy hollyfield has some answers at the bay bridge. amy? >> reporter: hi, good morning, reggie. there might have been a little bit of shock here at the toll plaza this morning as people headed back into work for this new year, but transit officials point out we voted for this. also i might remind you, this is

just the beginning. a new year, a new toll hike, a new wave of frustration from drivers. >> that's outrageous. $7? wow! and gas? it's easier to take the bus. >> reporter: transit officials don't think this will be the typical reaction, pointing out this wasn't imposed on drivers, it was approved by voters in an election. >> everyone knew it was coming. in fact it was voted on in the bay area about six months ago. but it's not real until it's real, and it's real today. i do think that people have to remind themselves that the tolls are going up this year by a dollar. >> reporter: this dollar toll increase at state-owned bridges like the bay bridge is just round one. the price will go up $1 every three years, a total of $3 in nine years. the money will go toward transportation projects that will hopefully ease traffic congestion. >> a lot of money for new b.a.r.t. cars, new cars for san francisco muni as well, new car pool lanes across the entire bay

area, which we really need badly. >> reporter: ferry riders are happy about the toll increase. the money will also go towards increasing ferry service. >> i would love all the ferry service that i can get. i've been taking the ferry since 2010 from alameda and it is the best way to commute. >> reporter: you heard that man say, oh, it's cheaper to take the bus. not necessarily. ac transit, the cost of taking the bus across the bridge also went up $1. the golden gate bridge isn't part of this, but there's also talk about increasing that toll. so you really can't escape, costs are just going up. reporting live at the bay bridge, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> amy, thank you. okay, mike, so let's talk about that commute this morning. for a lot of people it was chillier than they may have expected for the new year. >> yeah, they ending vacation and holiday, grab that coat. dress in more layers tomorrow.

here's the lows for today. look at all those neighborhoods below freezing. ukiah, fairfield, san ramon, livermore, brentwood, palo alto, cupertino, morgan hill and santa cruz. this is what you can expect tonight, almost the same temperatures, maybe a degree or two warmer. there will be a little more humidity in the air and that will help temperatures stay up just a little bit. also the likelihood of frost is more likely as we head through tomorrow morning than it was this morning because the air was just too dry for frost this morning. so maybe a degree or two warmer but you may have to scrape some frost tomorrow that you didn't have to today. in about an hour president trump will sit down with congressional leaders on both sides at the white house. this is since the government shutdown started nearly two weeks ago. kenneth moton has more. >> reporter: day 12 of the partial government shutdown, president trump will finally

december, is evidence that the president has not risen to the mantle of the office. the president's twitter response, quote, would much prefer mitt would focus on border security. i won big and he didn't. romney's niece is the chair of the republican national committee. she responded, calling her uncle's comments disappointing and unproductive. >> every day this government shutdown goes on, it gets trashier at our national parks. abc 7 news was at san francisco's lands end trail where trash bins are overflowing. funding for national parks on hold and most staff are on furlough so no one is collecting that trash. some park visitors say it's people's behavior that is so trashy. >> you pack your garbage in, you pack your garbage out and show respect for nature. >> that's it. >> the presidio trust is keeping the golden gate national

recreation area clean. we found a mom and son picking up trash as part of their new year's resolution. happening today, the man accused of killing a central valley police corporal is due to make his first court appearance. he was arrested friday near bakersfield. authorities say he shot and killed 33-year-old ronil singh last wednesday. new at 11:00, two people are in critical condition at a san francisco burn center after they were rescued out of a condemned city housing complex that caught fire this morning on potrero hill. the fire department said the construction worker and police officer spotted the fire and rescued one adult from the first floor. another adult was found on the second floor during a search by firefighters. the building at 26th and connecticut streets was supposed to be vacant. the fire department says it has not yet determined the cause. new this morning, a san jose police officer is out of the

hospital after getting hurt in a crash overnight. this happened just before 2:00 a.m. at tully and king roads. you can see there the officer being loaded into an ambulance. he's now been treated and released. police say the other driver was not hurt. he stayed at the scene and cooperated and got cited for a red light violation. new overnight, fire crews are cleaning up from a fire in castro valley. it started just after 10:00 last night. the fire was put out by 10:30. no one was inside. the cause is under investigation and we don't know yet how much damage was done. now to developing news, san jose fire sam la cardia waking up in the hospital this morning. a car hit him as he was riding his bike. he suffered broken bones after a driver hit him yesterday while he road at salt lake drive and maybury road. a woman that came out to help didn't know who it was at first. >> wrapped up his arm because

that was bleeding quite a bit. i know he had to be in a lot of pain but he just kept thanking us and thanking us. i thought, you know, that's very nice and sweet. >> the driver said he just didn't see the mayor. the mayor was taken to san jose regional medical center where he's expected to remain for a day or two. in a statement he thanked linda and the paramedics for helping him. new this morning, a shake-up in the 49ers radio booth. former voice of the oakland raiders, greg papa, is now taking over in santa clara. he spent 21 years with the raiders before he was fired last summer. he replaces ted robinson who spent ten seasons doing play-by-play for the niners. the team says robinson will assume a new role in the organization. we're just days away from the college football playoff national championship game. the mouth-watering options for fans, plus what you need to know about road closures. and two of the greatest tennis players of all time take to the court. the outcome of this epic battle.

most educated town in california and that honor goes to ladera in san mateo county. they looked at data from the u.s. census bureau. they found the town with the biggest share of adults with at least a bachelor's degree. about 1,500 people live there and about 94% went to college. >> that's neat. how about this? this is the radar based out of tucson. live doppler 7 in the white means snow and it even dips south of the border into mexico. this is what it looked like at the saguaro national park in tucson. look at all that snow. this is from basethief24, his twitter handle. his name is eddie b. and we have another one courtesy of robert scott. this is another one showing the valley floor there. look at all of that snow in the desert. and one more just because it's beautiful, i think, and it's very unusual for this time -- well, very unusual, maybe not for this time of the year, but

still, i like that. can we get some on our mountain tops any time soon? anybody up for just one snowstorm in the bay area? we haven't had one in forever. here's a look at what's going on outside. it's plenty sunny out there, the breezes are less aggressive so it feels good to be out in the sun. clear tonight, and we've got several chances of rain rolling in. today we'll top out 55 to 58 between 1:00 and 2:30. here's a beautiful shot from emeryville. you can see all the way past the golden gate. no marine layer. we're still in the upper 40s and low 50s at noon. at 52 to 54 with sunshine at 4:00. dropping into the 40s by 8:00. by midnight our inland valleys on the way to another freeze. in fact look at all the 30s out there. the only places in the 40s, richmond, oakland, san francisco and half moon bay. probably not as many 20s as what we had this morning. maybe a little bit more frost.

we talked about the storm door opening. when it comes in, one of the strongest storms will hit us first and it's a moderate on our storm impact scale. at least a half inch to inch of rain just saturday with downpours from thunderstorms and wind gusts at 30 to 55 miles an hour, so this is a pretty strong storm. as we turn over to saturday and through the morning hours, you can see a quarter to a half inch we wake up to saturday morning. by the afternoon hours, half inch in the south bay, more than an inch in the north bay. the strongest part of the storm will be saturday and sunday. we don't add much by sunday night. into monday there's another push of wet weather but it hits the north bay more than the south bay and that's important, because we're hosting the biggest college football game this season. the college football national championship at levi's stadium monday, and there's a chance of showers and 58 degrees for our friends from alabama and south carolina and wherever else that clemson and tide fans live. 52 degrees, so that's going to

be pretty comfortable for them. they're used to those temperatures this time of the year. of course they're used to the rain. we've got a 1 for sunday, a 1 for monday and a 1 for tuesday on the storm impact scale. the big burst is coming in saturday. i wouldn't make any plans outside. >> what about plans inside? have you watched scary bird movie? otherwise known as "bird box." >> i have not yet. once my parents leave, i'll probably start to binge watch netflix stuff. >> i have a warning for you. don't walk around blindfolded. netflix is issuing this warning after its new movie inspired a unique challenge. people are covering their eyes trying to pretend they're sandra bullock in the movie. in response, netflix tweeted out a message. it says can't believe i have to say this, but please do not hurt yourselves with this bird box challenge. we don't know how this started and we appreciate the love, but boy and girl, those are characters in the movie, have just one wish for 2019.
