and we should and we should freeze credit. it's free and easy to do. but these accounts i think are really vulnerable. especially since if money is stolen from them, there's no guarantee you the consumer get your money back. we asked 15 large investment retirement companies what's your policy on this. what happens if money is stolen from a client. six we couldn't find any policy on their web site. we asked them directly. they wouldn't respond. and so as far as i can tell they don't have a policy. regarding this. the other nine i won't let them off the hook. many of the them say we have a stated policy and you're protected. when you dig into that policy, we found with many that there are 30 or more different things you the consumer have to prove you have done to protect your account. for example. many of these it's tia for

example. one of the many requirements they had 69 different requirements. >> if someone stole my money they potentially say to me. >> in theory, as long as you have jumped through the 69 hoops that we set up. we'll give you the money. one is you have to log onto your account once a week. you have to change your password once a month. they only send you quarterly statements. to log in once a week is a bit much. many of the plans say it's through no fault of your own. if the money was stolen, we'll return it. when you start digging into what that means, the crooks are so sophisticated. and their whole agenda is get you to do something that lets them in. i don't think it's enough. some of the companies had straightforward policies. charles swab had two things.

and that is don't share your password. but i think the big problem is the companies that have a number of requirements the companies that have any requirements to qualify to be protected by insurance, is they're not communicating you have to be doing these things. they're not telling customers. you have to check your balance once a week and change were password. if these are things i as a customer have to do to protect myself from the risk, why aren't you communicating that? constantly. >> those people that are watching this that don't go check regularly, should they get rid of the online account? >> no. set up an act with two factor awe te authentication. that way the crooks don't set it up for you. one of the few examples where money was stolen from an account was that the crook called the
