be done. be it volunteers or the city of san francisco. which today decided to step in. >> reporter: we don't know who done it. but someone came by this out door trash and took away some, not all of the trash that had been collecting. this is what it looked like yesterday. on the lands and trail in san francisco sea cliff neighborhood. the trail is managed by the golden gate national recreation area. clean up crews haven't been working because of the shut down. today the trash on the other end of the trail was piling up. that's when we called the city public works department to see if they were considering lending a hand. here's spokesperson. >> it's an extra challenge for us to come out and do the cleaning. we can do it. until the shut down is over we can do that. >> another park managed by the

federal government. the garbage was over flowing. yet people were continuing to leave their trash. >> never like this. this park is so clean always. everyone is responsible. >> we could all try to keep the bags with us. and take home with us. and put it in a trash. >> the cans next to fort parking lot were relatively empty. that's because this gate kept people from parking there. the portable toilets had not been cleaned either since the shut down. one had to be locked because the tank was full. >> and meanwhile the mayor of washington d.c. said today that her city will continue to pick up all of the garbage from the national mall. >> thank you. now take a look at this new map. we're calling it the trash

tracker. you can click on parks in the bay area and photographs of what they look like. we have the story of a mother and son who volunteered to keep parks clean. check it out for yourself. >> we have been following developing news from the oakland hills. police are searching for suspects following reports of a burglary and shots being fired. officers entered a home looking for clues and suspects. sky map 7 shows you the street where police are searching now. there are reports that the suspects drove away. >> grieving family members and coworkers packed a courtroom to confront the man accused of murdering a central valley police officer. police thought the suspect's name was perez. court records now show his name. he returned to jail. following a brief hearing. a judge ordered him to under go a mental evaluation to see if he

is fit to stand trial. the suspect didn't look at the family. and his fellow officers during the hearing. >> san jose mayor is out of the hospital. after a car hit him while he road his bike. a crash on the east side on at salt lake drive. the mayor has been leading a campaign to reduce traffic crashes and injuries. we have the latest on the mayors condition. >> reporter: mayor was discharged from the hospital at midafternoon. after he was struck by an suv op his bicycle on new years day. earlier in the day he posted this photograph. walking down a hospital corridor. his back supported by a brace. >> i'm very grateful to everybody here. and the teams from the emergency room. who are so sportive and helping ghet on my feet. >> he doesn't need surgery. however he needs a couple months of physical therapy. fractures of two vertebrae and

sternum. but felt blessed to be able to walk today. the accident happened when a driver was making a right turn. the mayor is an avid cyclist and advocate to reduce crashes. and has been creating well marked bike lanes. in places where the city restriped the roadways, the city is already seen an improvement in safety. here in the vicinity of pearl avenue the city noted a reduction of 40% in crashes. in the year 2017. >> the executive director of the bicycle coalition believes education and creating empathy between drivers and cyclists are critical. >> it's important for folks to just take some time to experience what it's like to either be a driver. or be a bicyclist or a pedestrian.

that's how you can empathize. and behave better on the road. >> mayor plans to work from home this week. with the goal of returning to city hall next week. we wish him the best. a tourist injured by a bullet that police say was fired to celebrate the new year. it happened after midnight yesterday. during a new years eve party at a home on east 14th street. near the oakland border. the victim was visiting from mexico and was in a backyard. when he felt something hit his left hand. the injury is not serious. it is described as abrasion. >> oakland six year-old shot by a stray bullet new years eve remains in the hospital. we're hearing from a doctor about gunshot wounds specifically in children. >> reporter: a six yeerd shot by a stray bullet new years eve is recovering here. >> it's extremely lucky.

>> reporter: he's not treating the little girl and can't comment specifically on the case. but says he treated hundreds of other gunshot victims including children. >> more than i can keep count of. >> reporter: neighbors describe gunfire mixed with fire works. >> boom boom. >> reporter: tuesday the bullet was still in the six year-olds head. >> we don't actually go remove the bullet. ever. unless the bullet is posing some immediate risk. >> reporter: the 6 year-old was at a backyard party. the bullet could have come from anywhere within a mile. >> exposure to violence and stressful events like being shot. are huge adverse childhood events that may have downstream effects. >> yesterday oakland police department chief stopped by the hospital with a giant teddy bear for the girl. and a stern plea for everyone else. >> put the guns down.

performance by imagine dragons on treasure island. sky 7 was over there today. you can see the tents going up. news reporter is live in downtown with more on the preparation happening now. >> things are starting to take shape here in downtown san jose. behind me you can see the tent looks different. from when we showed you during the 4:00 news. now they have installed lights and raised up the height. lt host committee has talked about the importance of this championship. they say if it goes well it will make the bay area competitive when it comes to bidding on other major scale events. >> reporter: inside the arrivals hall, this giant banner welcomes fans to this years national championship. as the city gets ready to welcome the country, ryan allen hall says his team will be ready. >> we'll show off this great city for the out of town fans
