you know, no breakthrough as the president met with congressional leaders yesterday at the white house. in fact, the president said he would, quote, look foolish to compromise on a deal. that came as more than 800,000 federal employees are still waiting to return to work. day 13 of the government shutdown hinges on the president's demand for $5.6 billion for a border wall with mexico. >> when they say the wall is immoral, well, then you got to do something about the vatican because the vatican has the biggest wall of them all. >> reporter: the president met with lawmakers at the white house wednesday but with no real intention of compromise. this photo from inside the situation room where those contentious conversations were had. even publicly rejecting a $2.5 billion compromise proposed to democrats by his own vice president. >> we're asking for 5.6 and, you know, somebody said 2.5. look, this is national security we're talking about. >> reporter: democrats made clear they aren't budging

either. >> we're asking the president to open up government. we are giving him a republican path to do that. why would he not do it? >> reporter: this morning, the president is waking up to a new reality as democrats take control of the house. senate my north leader chuck schumer and house democratic leader nancy pelosi said they plan on moving forward with two bills to re-open the government that were once backed by senior republicans. but that's a nonstarter for gop senators. at joshua tree in california, no deal means nobody to help keep the place clean. >> i just hope we can end the shutdown soon and kind of come together as a people because this is getting ridiculous, what we're doing. >> reporter: you know, in addition to the federal employees, there's at least 2,000 contractors that are also impacted by this. and they feel they face the very t recee p.ial that they will naand mausback to you. >> the president facing a less

friendly congress as democrats take control of the house. zachary, thank you. and president trump has taken a jab at the former defense secretary jim mattis claiming essentially that he fired him. the president actually forced mattis to leave early after he had already resigned in protest but yesterday the president slammed the job mattis did in afghanistan and criticized the strategy of his generals. >> we have an area that i brought up with our generals four or five weeks ago where taliban is here, isis is here and they're fighting each other. i said, why don't you let them fight? why are we getting in the middle of it? i said, let them fight. sir, we want to do it -- they go in and they end up fighting both of them. it's the craziest thing i've ever seen. i think i would have been a good general but who knows? >> reporter: the president making those comments in a cabinet meeting with the acting defense secretary pat shanahan sitting right next to him. the u.s. ambassador to russia says an american facing spy charges in moscow is in good

condition. paul whelan is being held in a notorious russian prison charged with spying. a russian news site claims whelan was caught with a classified list of russian secret agents, but whelan's family insists he's not a spy and say he was in russia for a friend's wedding. >> let's talk about some money news this morning. apple's stock could be in for a rough day amid concerns about sales slowdowns. ceo tim cook says apple sold far fewer iphones particularly in china during the holiday season. growing concern about the slowing chinese economy is one reason for the recent volatility on wall street. and analysts are warning that apple's slowing sales could lead to a more widespread sell-off. a 14-year-old houston boy accused of driving an suv that caused a fatal car accident is now charged with murder. police say he and two friends had been throwing eggs at other cars when another driver began chasing them. this surveillance video shows the suv running a red light and crashing into a pickup truck killing the driver. that driver was in town to visit her kids andrandkids.

week. it's about 20 miles across and appears, as you can see here, to be two objects linked together well, turning now to weather, a storm sweeping across the south could mean icy conditions or heavy rain for the morning commute. let's take a closer look at your thursday forecast. good morning. big-time problems with the winter storm in the center part of the country. oklahoma pounded literally by more ice, more snow. and flooding rains throughout the lower mississippi valley region but not just there. the entire southeast because they've been hammered over and over again by more rain, so the water is already there sitting in the first place. then you add more on top of it and snow pushing throughout the northeast and the southern new england states courtesy of this low pressure system. i'm accuweather meteorologist paul williams. coming up, an airline mistakenly sells tickets way below the real price, so will they honor the deal?

we're back with video of a dust devil tearing across this yard in nevada. surveillance cameras show the suv outside the house rocking then the dust devil. look at all that debris flying around. it tears apart a children's playhouse out back. it happened this week about 50 miles west of las vegas. nobody was injured. and check this out. this is in australia where another dust devil took this paraglider on the ride of his life.

and you can hear his wife screaming in the background. he was actually getting ready to take off when the dust dicked hd tossed him around. thankful to report this morning he was not hurt. the reward leading to the person who killed a 7-year-old girl in houston has now reached $50,000. police say a white bearded man pulled up next to the barnes' family car and fired a gun killing jazmine barnes. activists say they believe the shooting was racially motivated. police say that until they track down the gunman, they're not ruling anything out. and with tips pouring in, police say they are ramping up patrol in the area. the investigation into the apparent death of missing colorado mother kelsey berreth seems to be expanding. abc news has learned that a 32-year-old female nurse from idaho is being investigated for possibly disposing of berreth's phone. idaho is where berreth's phone was detected after she vanished. so far only berreth's fiance patrick frazee is charged with her murder. court documents claim that three months before berreth vanished, frazee allegedly tried to find

someone to kill her. cathay pacific airlines says it will honor first class tickets sold at a fraction of the real price, this due to a new year's day computer glitch. travelers going from vietnam to new york usually pay about $16,000 for first class seats but because of the glitch, those tickets only cost $675. >> good deal right there. perhaps it was the straw that broke the camel's back at this mcdonald's in florida. look. police say a customer clearly lost his temper after not finding straws at the condiment bar. look at this. then police say that man kicked another employee in the stomach as he was escorted out. he was arrested for assault. it was the first day of a new law in st. petersburg restricting the use of plastic straws. >> wow, just terrible scene there. okay. coming up, the dramatic 911 call from a woman trapped in a sinking car and the life-saving decision she made. also, a string of high-profile burglaries targeting celebrities. what was stolen and how police

than a minute. now to that string of high-profile burglaries in los angeles. celebrities like usher, jason derulo and adam lambert were targeted with millions in fine wine, jewelry and artwork taken. authorities say 32-year-old benjamin ackerman pulled off the massive heist by targeting celebrity homes that were for sale or being shown during open houses. they say he wore fancy clothes and drove fancy cars and signed in using his middle name. then kept the stolen items in a storage locker. police say he was highly sophisticated and was somehow, get this, able to disable surveillance systems making cameras go black for hours at a time. and just the smell of fish may have been enough to kill an 11-year-old boy in new york. his family knew he was allergic to fish and was careful not to let him eat any. but his grandmother was cooking visit. he soon had trouble breathing but his asthma inhaler didn't help. experts warn proteins can be
