hammering out a deal and zachary kiesch has the latest from washington. good morning, zachary. >> reporter: good morning, marcus. attention will be on that 11:00 a.m. meeting this morning between the president and congressional leaders. this is one that the president asked for. what will come from it? nobody really knows at this point. both sides flexed their muscles yesterday and really reiterated there is little room for negotiation. surrounded by friends and family the newly minted congress wasted no time. >> the american people spoke and demanded a new dawn. >> reporter: the 116th house now led by democrats approving two bills thursday that would effectively end the shutdown. the democratic package includes a measure to extend funding to the department of homeland security at current levels with $1.3 billion for border security until february the 8th. but it includes no money for president trump's number one campaign promise, a physical border wall with mexico. >> the fact is, a wall is an immorality. it's not who we are as a nation. >> reporter: trump says he'll veto the bill and senate majority leader mitch mcconnell

expletive. that's according to several reporters in the room and this video tweeted by john levin of the rap. >> we're gonna impeach the [ bleep ]. >> reporter: the president faces a new reality. this is effectively the first time in his political life that he can be effectively be told no. janai and marcus. >> it continues into another day. appreciate it. a developing story near houston overnight, a man is now in custody after the murders of three children. police on a wellness check at this apartment complex found the victims, all of them younger than 5. they say they also found a woman with a gunshot wound to the head. later a man called 911 and was arrested after confessing. police say he has a long criminal history but no word on a motive. we turn now to the wild police chase stretching over 100 miles of southern california. the drama playing out on live tv. that suspect finally taken into custody after hitting a man on a scooter. police who know the suspect say he's a veteran who suffers from ptsd. what started as an attempt to pull over this car with a busted

back window turned into this wild and violent chase. the driver identified overnight as karl flores speeding away from officers. a news helicopter capturing the moment he hits the man on this scooter not even trying to stop or swerve around him. the collision smashing his windshield. >> pulled up on the side, bam. yes, and he spins him out. >> reporter: the car badly damaged after officers tried four pit maneuvers. flores repeatedly escaping for three hours until finally running out of gas near camp pendleton. >> during that time he was belligerent to the officers on scene. he did not comply with the commands ordering him out of the vehicle. >> reporter: the pursuit ending after flores took a bean bag round to the face and a k-9 officer moved in grabbing him. a friend of flores says he's a troubled veteran. >> this person is a ptsd veteran. he served. he was in afghanistan and iraq.

we have tried to get help with the v.a. but with it being so backed up and such a long wait list, it's hard to get treatment for any of our veterans. >> reporter: this morning flores facing a slew of charges including felony hit-and-run. >> when is enough going to be enough? these people are, like i said, constantly putting their lives on the line for us and what are we doing to return the help? >> despite taking a direct hit, we're told the rider on the scooter suffered no serious injuries. we learned overnight that children are among seven people killed in this fiery crash near gainesville, florida. two tractor trailers, a van and a car collided on interstate 75 and the vehicles burst into flames as diesel fuel spilled onto the highway. several other people were injured, some of them critically. some breaking news overnight involving the oscars. kevin hart could be back as host of the show. hart withdrew his name because of an uproar over his past tweets including homophobic jokes. but in a new interview released overnight ellen degeneres

new revelations this morning about notorious mexican drug lord joaquin "el chapo" guzman as his trial resumes in new york. one of his alleged associates testified his drug cartel spent $1 million per month to bribe mexican officials including a security guard for former mexico president vicente fox. the prosecution's witness also testified that the cartel used submarines to bring drugs into the united states. also they used private planes and he revealed el chapo once escaped from prison inside a laundry cart. >> a new york mother of two is charged with attempted murder accused of trying to kill her estranged husband with antifreeze. investigators say renee burke entered her ex-husband's home several times pouring the poison into wine and soda bottles but the couple's 4-year-old son told the baby-sitter he saw what his mother had done. that's when the father installed surveillance cameras and turned video over to police. and officials in las vegas have released this security video hoping to find the woman

seen running over and killing the owner of a nail salon. they say krystal whipple took off in a stolen car after failing to pay for a $35 manicure. that's when the owner made the fatal decision to chase her down and jump in front of the car. scientist neil degrasse tyson is now off the air as he faces sexual misconduct allegations. "variety" reports that the national geographic channel has pulled tyson's show "star talk" as the claims are investigated. reports emerged in november that two women accused him of inappropriate behavior. another woman claimed he raped her when they were grad students in the '80s. he denies those allegations. in business news, mcdonald's is taking on dunkin' in the breakfast wars by getting into the doughnut fries game. published reports say doughnut sticks will soon be added to mcdonald's breakfast menu. they'll be similar to the doughnut fries offered by dunkin' since last november. they plan to market them to breakfast customers while

this case could be connected to other shootings as they search for the killer. >> we're continuing to proceed with different strategies to try to find this coward of a killer. >> reporter: marci gonzalez, abc news. and authorities have identified the teenager who died after falling off of a chair lift at a ski resort in pennsylvania this week. the 17-year-old death's was ruled an accident. police are investigating whether a problem with the seat bar played a role. just last week in montana there was another mishap on a chair lift. skiers were left dangling 100 feet off the ground during a snowstorm after their chair lift broke down. ski lift falls have killed five people in the u.s. since 2004 but a ski resort trade group says chair lifts are safer than elevators. in medical news those sugar substitutes we've always thought are less fattening than sugar probably aren't. in the most comprehensive study yet on artificial sweeteners, researchers in europe found they aren't any better or any worse than real sugar in preventing obesity and they found no

that's the night or the morning where bart extends its hours because of all of the festivities. so i want was really lllthat morning. the big issue was christmas eve. according to an article in the san francisco chronicle, more than a third of station agent train operators and transportation supervisors called in sick. this left a lot of work to bart police. many of them had to handle closing duties for stations. one director said this is a great concern given the kneeled for safety and customer service. here is how the union responded to the issue. this is a quote from the union president who says sometimes you can only be cursed at or beat on so much before you need a personal health day. bart officials will be independenting this furth inspecting this further. passengers are starting to
