>> announcer: good morning, bay area. let's get up and get going. >> this is abc 7 mornings. good morning and thank you for joining us on this saturday, january 5th. i'm chris nguyen. let's start with a quick look at weather. here is lisa argen tracking the storm headed our way. hey, chris, within the next five days we see three storms. starting with a 2 on the storm impact scale. bringing gusty winds and moderate rain throughout the morning to afternoon hours. the gusts could exceed 60 miles an hour with the cold air could see a chance of thunderstorm. so just moving into pen drove, santa rosa looking at rain. also around cloverdale. further south more returns down around alina with heavier rain. but further south not much happening in san francisco on or t tice the returns increasing offshore processes the warm sector of the system

there quickly to remove any tree that is may be down or big branches that are down. >> residents in san francisco can pick up sand bags today from 8:00 until 2:00 at public works operations yard on marin street. you must have proof of address and you can get up to 10 bags if needed. as always check the weather conditions in your area any time on the abc 7 news app. featuring live doppler 7 and the ability to customize the forecast where you live. breaking news out of southern california, a shooting atatorens bowling alley left three people dead and four others hurt. it happened just before midnight at the gablehouse bowl. police say two of the four injured men were taken to the hospital . .. the other two opted to seek out medical attention on their own. s in a live picture of the scene. the l.a. times reports a fight at the alley led up to the shooing. no employees hurt. police are working to identify the suspects involved. back here in the bay area, oakland police are investigating

a shooting that left three people dead. it happened just one day after city officials said the city had the lowest homicide rate in nearly 20 years. the shooting happened near center and 11th streets around 9:00 last night. police say all three victims are men. officers could be seen searching inside a car at the scene. no word yet on what may have led up to the shooing. police have not announced any arrests. a final goodbye for newman police corporal ronil singh. a public funeral will be held in modesto later this morning. he was shot and killed during a traffic stop the day after christmas. newman is about 100 miles from the bay area. yesterday people in the tight knit community had a chance to pay respects. abc 7 news reporter leslie brinkley was there. >> reporter: corporal singh. ronil singh, a popular 33-year-old canine officer in

newman for 7 years. gunned down during a dui stop. photos and flowers lined the aisles of the theater. his kaskt at the pronate. lefg behind a brother, wife and 5-month-old son. >> he was a good friend, good role model. a great dad. a great son. >> very sweet officer. i'm just sorry that this had to happen. he was the one that would climb up on the ladder and got the kitty down. and i thanked him and he had a smile on his face. >> reporter: the procession of officers wound through the central valley from modesto to newman, a town of 10,000. the main street awash in flags and blue ribbons and tears. >> you're a tight knit community. 11 officers. now down to 10. you must be feeling this deeply. >> where a family, not so much a department. everyone of us is hurting. >> president trump called the

>> pg&e is facingof dollars in liabity if found responsible for a series of deadly wildfires in california. so the utility is reportedly exploring the sale of its gas assets using the money to fund massive payouts. >> by spinning off the gas and electric systems, i think they will become a size that they can manage. i think what we have seen over the last few years is they've been too big to succeed. we saw that after san bruno. and we're see going after the fires. >> reporter: state senator jerry hill has been critical of the utility giant. he welcomes a split. the question is who would buy it? >> they don't have much of a system to sell. no one wants a gas system. the electric system is more attractive than the gas system. >> reporter: the company is looking to sell some real estate assets like the san francisco headquarters. >> if you are talking about selling your assets at a very reduced rate obviously to cover some expenses, it's not just for the going to work. >> former san bruno mayor is disappointed with the

possibility given pg&e track record. in a statement to abc 7 on friday, the company said the pg&e board was reviewing structural options to best position pg&e to implement necessary changes while meeting customer and operational needs. >> i think a lot of the hearts are in theright place. but it's structural. it's been going on many years and going to take many years to correct. >> reporter: and it's important to note that investigators have not determined the cause of the massive wildfires that destroyed the town of paradise in november. but speculation has centered on pg&e. in the newsroom. carlos salcedo. abc 7 news. in developments in the efforts to fixes san francisco's transpay transit center closed more than 100 days since two cracks were discovered in steel regimes. the joint power authority says the metropolitan transportation commission approved a repair design. now a reconstruction schedule has to be finalized that should happen this month some time. happening now college football fever is taking over the south bay.

ellen degeneres is facing backlash this morning for coming to the defense of kevin hart. he stepped down from hosting the oscars following backlash to his past homophobe upper backic comments. abc's reporter has the story. >> reporter: comedian kevin hart talking openly about his dramatic exit at this year's host on abc after the string of homophobic comments he made years ago resurfaced sitting down with ellen degeneres. >> i'm upset because i know who

roof camera where the winds pick up in the city. rainy and windy today. snow levels pat 4,000 feet. mount hamilton could see a light dusting. but the main activity really levels off tonight. so that's when the colder air moves in. the afternoon and evening. most of the precip smub over but starts up again tomorrow mainly for the second half of the day. but we see rain on and off throughout the entire weekend. this morning winds gusting to 43 miles an hour. by about 11:00 half moon bay. one of the stronger gusts. look at the rest of the day here still over 20 miles an hour. so that's why we have the wind advisory through 4:00. and right on through the day looking at the gusty winds, 30 miles an hour. and this is when the wind advisory expires through the evening and overnight hours. but the next round of rain and wind coming in at 11:00 tomorrow, it will be raining and bring in the gustyand the secon

through sunday night. so here is how you can plan your day today. with 8:00 rainy weather for some of you. towards the afternoon, the colder air you can see heavier downpours. this could be a thunderstorm with hail embedded. and then it pushes through. but there is more out there throughout the afternoon. by 5:00, 6:00 things wind down. the winds will taper off. and then into tomorrow again, by 1:00, 1:30 more heavy rain. this is through the evening hours, 7:30 still looking at heavy downpours. so we combine the two days and you'll notice from the first system it's not that impressive. but we'll take what we can get, right? a third much of an inch in oakland. 0.4 in oakland. 7:00 tonight. then through 11:00 tomorrow 11:00 tomorrow. through inch ramon valley. maybe 1.5 inches in half moon bay and hopefully maybe 0.75

>> announcer: good morning, south bay. let's get up and get going. >> this is abc 7 mornings. good morning and thanks for being with us. i'm chris nguyen. we start this half hour with a quick look at weather. here is lisa argen tracking the condition where you live. lisa, good morning. good morning to you. may have been woken up by the wind or rain or simply just the mild temperatures. we have a 2 on our storm impact scale. a series of wet weather makers headed our way today and tomorrow. two systems both a level 2. anywhere from 3/4 of an inch up to three inches as we combine the two rain days. 45 miles an hour look at gunnarville, healdsburg and pen grove. forest knolls to coast to balinas. but not into the east bay yet. in the sunset dali ski and stand bruno down to pesk deer o in the

santa cruz mountains. we are looking at winds kicking up. right now with a wind advisory through 4:00. gusting in excess of 56 miles an hour. that could bring down trees or power lines. 35 miles an hour gusts half moon bay. breezy around the bay and mild with 53 in hayward. cool in livermore at 39. s in the mild part of the system. then we have more rain, the possibility of thunderstorms and cold air moving through. accompanied by the gusty winds. not until about 6:00 tonight do we have a more widespread break. we'll talk about that second system coming in in a few minute. chris. >> lisa, thanks. president trump is threatening to use emergency powers to build a border wall. in comes as the government shutdown enters the 15th day. abc news reporter linda lopez has the latest. >> reporter: congressional leaders at the white house. both sides calling the talks contentious. >> i can speak for republicans in the house and republicans in the senate they feel very strongly about having a safe

country. >> we really cannot resolve this until we open up government. >> democrats claim the president said he is willing to have the shutdown go on for months or a year. >> absolutely i said that. i don't think it will. but i am prepared. >> but democrats demanding an end to the shutdown before they'll debate border security. >> don't hold millions of americans, hundreds of thousands of workers hostage. open up the government and let's continue the discussions. >> 800,000 federal employees furloughed or working without pay. the president was asked what is his message to them? >> people that won't get next week's pay or the following week's pay, i think if you ever really looked at those people i think they'd say, mr. president, keep going. this is far more important. >> abc news learned the president is considering a different path to getting his border wall. >> have you considered using emergency powers to grant yourself authorities to build this wall without congressional approval? and second. >> yes, i have. >> you have?

>> yes, i have and i can do it if i want. >> so you don't need congressional approval to build the wall. >> no we can use -- absolutely we can call a national emergency because of the security of our country. >> both sides say staffers will continue discussions over the weekend but it's the president and congressional leaders who must agree to end this stalemate. linda lopez, abc news, new york. here in the bay area, muir woods will be closed starting monday because of the government shutdown. after this weekend there will be no subtle service, visitor service parking or open bathrooms. if you have a reservation during the closure you'll be refunded if you made the purchase through the parks website. the shutdown means trash is it piling up because of park service workers are furloughed. so today congresswoman jackie expire will join volunteers to clean up trash in san francisco. any will provide a truck to haul away debris. meet at stairwell 20 on the great highway at ocean beach.

everyone ride sharing is on the rise across the country. according to the latest survey from the pew research center, more than a third of people surveyed have gotten a ride from a dp like uber ob lyft each of which have headquarters in san francisco. just three years ago a third of respondents hadn't heard of the companies. in the survey less than 10% of passengers use ride sharing services every week. about a quarter average a ride a month. two thirds use them less than that. time now is 6:39. here is something new to try not morning coffee. international delight just announced this new peeps flavored coffee chromer.
