live where you live, this is "abc 7 news". gusting winds, trees down, rain, and this is just round one as the bay area gets socked by the first in a series of powerful storms. good evening and thanks for joining us, i'm dion lim. check out this video from our camera in santa cruz. you can't see too much, but this is time lapse taken about 6:00 p.m. you can see the pouring rain coming down in sheets. this could be the beginning of what is to come as we expect another soaking tomorrow. we have team coverage tonight. anser hassan has some of the damage from round one. we start with meteorologist drew tuma. it is a three on the impact scale? >> yes, we will see the winds

come back tomorrow again, but the rain looks to be heavier tomorrow than today. live doppler 7 is mainly quiet. we have one lone downpour working through concord. zoom into street level, a brief downpour working north to east. in baypointe you will see a downpour in about five minutes. tomorrow the next system ranks a three, a strong storm on the storm impact scale. last time we in a three was the end of november, so rain heavy at times and winds gusting well over 40 miles per hour. so minor flooding and downed trees are possible. if you are trying to squeeze in an outdoor workout or walk the the morning because after that here comes the next storm moving on shore. it looks to bring wind and heavy rain from the start. we will time out the rest of the storm system, show you what to expect as you head back to work even on monday morning. the full accuweather forecast in few minutes, di on- >> sounds good, drew. thanks. as the bay area braces for powerful rain starting sunday,

today it was the wind that wreaked havoc across the bay area. you can see the american flag ripping around in pacifica where anser hassan is here tonight. he joins us live from there. anser. >> reporter: good evening, you can get a sense of how strong the winds are on the coast. a lot of people come to pacifica for fishing. we spoke to a family that didn't come just for fishing but to experience how hard the winds are blowing. raymond came up empty handed, no crabs tonight. but tonight he brought his family out to experience the wind. >> oh, i love it. so i tried to bring my kids over, let him see the weather, how it looks like. >> reporter: but they spent all of 30 minutes out at the pacifica pier, the gusts of wind and rain a bit too strong for what he was expecting. >> i didn't realize it was a super strong wind and the kids don't like it. don't think we're going to stay

longer. >> reporter: across the bay area high wind gusts reached between 50 and 70 miles per hour, taking down trees and power lines with it. in san francisco, strong winds during times of high tides brought flooding along the embarcadero and an emergency warning for people to stay away. in the richmond district a downed tree blocked traffic for an hour until firefighters cleared the road. >> for the last four or five years, after a heavy storm there are always branches that fall down and there's a lot of cleanup afterwards. >> reporter: he says that's exactly what happened today. this time a branch from this maple tree just missed this house. he says when the winds pick up, he avoids walking through the nearby park lined with big trees. >> because i have lived here for so long that i know there's always the possibility for the branches flying around. >> reporter: farther north, more damage. in guerneville, winds pushed a tree into a two-story house, tearing through the roof. there were the usual wet spots like flooding at the park in

mill valley. this time two cars stuck in the water. now, back out here in pacifica, there were reports of downed power lines but everything seems to be okay now. no reports of any outages. in pacifica, anser hassan, "abc 7 news." >> we appreciate the update. thank you. now the weather created some lengthy delays at san francisco international airport throughout the day. things are clearing up now, but earlier a arrivals were seeing delays of two hours and 30 minutes. there were a few delays at the san jose airport. you can track the storm with the "abc 7 news" app. we have live doppler 7 on the app and you can enable push alerts to get weather advisories on your phone or tablet device. a final goodbye for newman police corporal ronil singh. hundreds paid tribute to him during a public funeral in modesto. he was shot and killed during a traffic stop in the central valley city of newman the day after christmas. thousands of law enforcement and community members attended that

funeral today. "abc 7 news" reporter jobina fortson was also there. she tells us it was not about the tragedy but about celebrating the life lived. >> reporter: an echo of bag pipes filled the cold air throughout modesto saturday morning, marking the start of the day no one mere wanted to come. >> to the family, i want you to know i am sorry and that that ta always be here. >> reporter: newman police chief randy richardson's words to the family of corporal ronil singh, the 33-year-old was killed the morning after christmas hours after this photo was taken with his five-month-old son and wife. the suspect was charged with murder wednesday. >> fresno chp -- >> corporal singh's brother opened his eulogy thanking law enforcement and went on to tell stories about his brother. >> he used to watch "cops,"

watch videos and he always wanted to become law enforcement in america. >> reporter: corporal singh was an immigrant from fiji, living his american dream. >> hnot how did he die but how did he live. not what did he gain, but what did he give. >> reporter: he gave the ultimate sacrifice. >> newman police department and newman city is where his heart and soul was. >> reporter: but his love was with his family. the rain picked up as the funeral ended, creating the most telling symbol of the mood. ♪ >> reporter: all of these vehicles are on their way to what would traditionally be a burial, but they believe in trans my graduation of the soul so his body will be cremated. reporting in modesto, jobina fortson, "abc 7 news." >> his widow was presented with the american flag ha was draped

over his casket in a grave side ceremony. newman police chief randy richardson fought back tears as he gave her the colors. the corporal's remains were laid to rest in a community outside of modesto. there is only one authorized fund set up for the family of corporal singh. it is through the stanislaus sworn deputies association. if you would like to donate we have a link to it at our wib site, abc7news.com. santa clara police say it is amazing nobody was injured other than the gunman who fired indiscriminately into traffic and at people at a rotten robbie gas station. officers shot and killed the man who they say had multiple weapons and lots of ammunition. "abc 7 news" reporter katie utehs has the story. >> reporter: police say the whole thing started here at this location in cupertino. you see behind me the boarded-up kiosk. they say an employee set it on fire and took off to santa clara where he started shooting.

witness arnold sanchez recorded this cellphone video. around 5:45 in the morning, santa clara police reponded to the rotten robbie gas station at lafayette street and aldo avenue. you can see the shattered windows and bullet holes. >> the subject is still shooting inside the store. he has a shotgun in one hand and a handgun in the other. >> reporter: they received 911 calls about a man shooting at people and into traffic. several gas station employees and customers were inside when police arrived. >> it was only seconds between their arrival and the time that they took action. >> reporter: officers shot and killed the man, only identified at this point as a 55-year-old san jose resident. >> we are extremely fortunate that there are no injured civilians or officers. this person was shooting indiscriminately at passing motorists, at civilians in the parking lot as well as inside the store. >> reporter: it is unclear how many officers fired. around a dozen responded to the active shooter call.

there is police body camera footage and traffic camera video in addition to the witness cellphone video. in the south bay, katie utehs, "abc 7 news." we have learned a uc berkley football player died today after being hospitalized earlier in the week for medical emergency. bryce turner was working out near his home in southern california when the incident happened. the cal football team tweeted out its condolences this evening. he was a defensive back and appeared in one game this season. there's no word on a cause of death. bryce turner was just 19 years old. in the east bay, the president of the berkley school board is in critical condition along with her wife after the couple were hit by a car just after midnight. 53-year-old judy apple and her wife, 54-year-old alison bernstein were hit as they crossed martin king jr. way. the couple live nearby. both were critically hurt and remain in a local trauma center.

there's still plenty to do in downtown san jose for the college football national championship game. i'm reporting live in downtown san jose, amanda del castillo, "abc 7 news." >> looks like fun. thank you. clemson and alabama face off monday night at levi stadium. you can watch the college football playoff national championship on our sister network, espn. well, despite the best efforts of ellen degeneres, it doesn't look like kevin hart will take back his oscar hosting gig. sources tell deadline, hart did consider hosting again and that the academy would have been open to it, but hart was concerned he would be a distraction and wouldn't have enough time to prepare. hart backed out of the hosting of the oscars in december after old homophobic tweets resurfaced. this past week he made an appearance on the ellen show and ellen urged him to host. we don't know who is hosting, but we do know the oscars are on february 24th. make sure to catch them because abc 7 is the only place you can

watch. all right. back to the weather now. look at this. the snow came down in the sierra today. it was a welcome surprise for weekend skiers and snowboarders. you are looking at video from veil resorts showing the snowfall at north star. that area saw several inches of snow and no relief seems to be on the way. drew tuma is standing by with more. >> yes, it is a great weekend for anybody that loves snow. we are talking feet of fresh powder moving into the sierra over the next 24 hours. today here we were tracking scattered downpours and tonight we have widely isolated light showers still on live doppler 7. so we'll zoom in a little tighter on live doppler 7. you see a light shower working through san mateo right now, one moving into antioch and another moving into the marin coastline. really for the most part many of us are just dealing with cloud cover and cool conditions. 40s and 50s is the name of the game right now. we have cooled off to 42 in santa rosa. we are down to 49 in san mateo.

san ramon right now the temperature currently 46 degrees. the bigger story today was certainly the winds. earlier this afternoon we had winds gusting well over 40, 50 miles per hour in our hills. we had winds gusting close to 70 miles per hour. tonight the winds have really backed off and it will be a quiet night tonight in terms of winds and rainfall. an isolated shower perhaps in the north bay. otherwise we are talking about a mix of stars and clouds out there. pretty quiet conditions, upper 30s to upper 40s over the next 12 hours. here is what we are tracking. live doppler 7 along with satellite, this is the cold front that was responsible for kicking up the winds today and also bringing scattered downpours as well. it is pushing off to the east. what we're watching now that is quickly racing in, all of this moisture you see on satellite right here. that cloud cover, that's our next storm system, and it packs more of a punch in terms of rainfall and the same wind. on the storm impact scale, it is a strong level three storm here coming our way to finish out the weekend. rain heavy at times. those winds will ramp up once

again in the afternoon and the evening, so likely we will see minor flooding and the potential for more trees to come down. so hour-by-hour bee go. around lunge time we see the heavier showers moving on shore. they're indicated by the brighter colors on future weather. by 2:30, 3:00, we will track scattered downpous moving across the region. i think the heaviest rain will kind of hold off closer to sunset, by 5:00 or 6:00. there's a widespread moderate to heavy rain working across the region, and even by 9:00 we still will track those downpours moving through the region. as we go into early monday morning, the sometimes will get out of here, but still there could be a lingering shower for the monday morning commute. the heaviest rain will be out of here. future rainfall potential, i think a lot of cities have a good bet of seeing close to an inch of rainfall with this storm system. one of the areas we will be watching, the south bay. of course, you could be robbed of moisture thanks to the santa

cruz mountains. mountain view, san jose, probably will see half an inch of moisture out of the storm system. you will notice the winds in the afternoon. by 2:30 they're increasing, 30 miles per hour. by 7:00, 8:00 at night they are racing out of the south, 40 to perhaps 50 miles per hour. sierra snowfall, winter storm warning in effect until 4:00 monday morning. look at this. this is just a winter weather lover's dream. kirk wood, 30 inches. donner could see 27 inches of fresh snowfall. accuweather seven-day forecast, downpours, windy tomorrow. the best chance of a shower monday morning. another storm arrives tuesday night and another one, dion, looks to arrive on friday night as well. >> thanks for that, drew. >> sure. if you thought it was cold, still ahead on "abc 7 news" at 11:00, how is this for a start to 2019? the

valley city of newman the day after christmas. his brother said he was living his american dream. the 33-year old leaves behind a wife and five-month-old son. a gunman was killed by police after he reportedly opened fire into santa clara traffic and at a gas station. police tell us the rotten robbie employee set a kiosk on fire at the cupertino location about 5:30 in the morning and took off and starting shooting at rotten robbie location in santa clara. police say it is amazing nobody else was hurt. on monday gavin newsom will be sworn in as governor of california. today jerry brown gave his very last tv interview as governor in sacramento at the governor's mansion. he sat down with adrian albert from our sister station in los angeles. >> reporter: california's 39th governor chose to conduct his final interviews in the governor's mansion, a 142-year-old three-story sacramento victorian.

edmond g. brown junior is com templating his place in state history. he leaves office nearly 30 years after his first two terms started in 1975. he saw the state double in size, the budget grow ten times, governing in a style both pragmatic and practical. >> reporter: president trump versus congress, the partial government shutdown over his demand for the $5 billion for a border wall, saying now that he could declare a national emergency at the border and get it done under presidential edict. you as still the governor today of california, is there a national emergency at our border? >> no, no. and that is very dangerous to declare a national emergency if there isn't one. i think we ought to have a good border security and patrol. we have to work on how to deal with these refugees, and that's something we have to work with mexico and latin america.

but just this tall, ugly wall, it becomes a symbol that does not show america at its best. i think mr. trump to shutdown government and then to threaten virtu virtual dictatorial power is ominous and unacceptable. >> reporter: he and his wife are moving to a ranch house. but he is retiring with a $15 million war chest of unspent campaign funds and he's not saying gist yet what he will do with it. >> i'm going to judge carefully. i will consult with people, but i think whether it is climate or prison reform or candidates, i have a role to play and i have an enormous amount of experience. so whether it is national, state or local, i will be heard from. >> reporter: governor brown's father, pat brown, was elected california governor in 1958. his sister kathleen was state treasurer. come monday, this will be first time in more than 60 years that

second meeting set for tomorrow. that means some 800,000 federal employees remain furloughed or working without pay. >> the people that won't get next week's pay or the following week's pay, if you look at the people they would say, mr. president, keep going, it is far more important. >> reporter: the president tweeting without citing evidence that most of the affected workers are democrats adding, i want to stop the shutdown as soon as we are in agreement on strong border security. some workers already feeling the pinch. >> it is going to affect us when it comes to mortgages, paying rent, daycare. >> we don't know if we're going to have like our phone bill paid, our food for the rest of the month. >> reporter: democrats are urging the president to reopen the government. >> open up the government and let's continue the discussions. >> reporter: maintaining they support border security but not a wall. >> and our border security will suffer if we do not resolve this

issue. >> reporter: the president has signalled he is willing to declare a national emergency to bypass congress and build the wall himself, a move that would most certainly be challenged in court. elizabeth hehr, abc news, new york. meantime, the shutdown is affecting california's national parks. moour woods in marin county will close on monday. you can still get into yosemite national park but access is limited and several trails are closed due to safety concerns. joshua tree is still accessible, but the campgrounds have been closed. visitors to the park are encountering lots of trash as well as human waste. new developments tonight in the investigation into the killing of a texas girl during a drive-by shooting. a suspect has been arrested in the death of seven-year-old jasmine barnes, that is according to our sister station in houston, abc 13. the harris county sheriff's office tweeted earlier it was interviewing persons of interest. jasmine's mother, who was shot in the arm, says a man opened

boy, take a look at this. police and other drivers rushing to rescue a man trapped inside a burning suv. all of this happened in corpus christi, texas on new year's day. now, police released the dash cam video, and you can see the group just manages to rock the car back into an up right position. they then got the man out. police say they don't think the man would have survived if not for the help of strangers. taco bell has fired an employee and vowed to retrain others for mocking and refusing to serve a deaf customer. the incident was caught on camera and has since gone viral. >> call the police. because we can't take you, you're also not allowed to record me. >> oh, boy. that's how the employees treated brandon birch at his local taco bell in ohio. birch typed out his order on his iphone and showed it to employees there, but employees refused to serve him, saying the method was against company

policy. his mother said the harassment didn't stop there. >> it was like they were mocking me, making fun of me, and there was even a gentleman in the back, you know, giving peace sign. >> now, police were eventually called and the officer told taco bell workers birch was in the right. the officer even offered to buy brandon's food for him, but after the incident brandon said he just wanted to go home. well, meantime a blind woman is seeing beyoncé's management and entertainment company over this. the music superstar's website. the new york woman claims beyoncé.com is not fully accessible to her and others with vision impairments. she says it violates the americans with disabilities act. the lawsuit wants an injunction from the court so the company can make the website more accessible. she is also asking for damages, including attorney's fees. neither beyoncé nor representatives for her company have commented.
