wet. we have team coverage for you tonight. amanda dell castillo is in santa clara and south san francisco. drew tuma is tracking the tail of our storm. drew. >> deon, we got soaked earlier today. the winds gusting strong, well over 50 miles an hour. tonight we are on the tail end of that storm system. live doppler 7, we have dry skies prevailing in the north bay, still dealing with some light showers in the inland east bay and the south bay. so, this has been downgraded from a strong level 3 storm to a light level 1 storm for the next hour or so as the storm system departs to our east. winds right now no longer in that 40 to 50 mile an hour range. we've backed off a bit right now. our strongest winds 20 to 30 miles an hour. so the winds will continue to ease for the monday morning commute. the rain is gone, but standing water will still be on our roadways and free ways will remain wet and they will remain slick.

so a good idea to add some extra time, even though there will not be any rain falling during the morning commute. our next storm will move in quickly. that's one of three we're tracking for the week ahead. i'll have all the details in the accuweather forecast, dion. >> drew, thanks. undoubtedly this is the strongest storm of the season so far. no parts of the bay area was spared. in the city of south san francisco, downed trees were a problem. one large tree just missed a house, and that's where we find abc7 news reporter uncer. >> reporter: he can see it's blocking half the road. if you look by the fence you can see the roots just ripped up from the ground. neighbors say they're just thankful it didn't land on the house. clean-up crews roped off this tree that just missed crashing onto this house in south san francisco. >> luck at this didn't go the other way towards the house. yeah, it's pretty amazing. i knew it was windy. i didn't think it was that windy.

>> reporter: after cutting its branches, crews swept the street to make way for passing cars. in oakland, rain was the main issue. storm drains were tended to by city maintenance teams who drove up and down the streets of the lake merritt neighborhood, trying to keep roads from flooding, which was an issue for raymond coe. a flooding issue flooded his house. today's rains created a bigger mess. >> a big problem. >> reporter: further east in san leandro, pg&e sent crews to trim branches that were weighing on power lines. but the biggest splash was in san francisco where choppy waters on the bay came up on the embarcadero causing it to close a second day. >> i've never seen the tide so high. in the bay it's kind of scary. >> reporter: back in south san francisco another tree came down, this one just missing a transformer next to this

mcdonald. >> i heard it wasn't going to get this bad, but it looks pretty bad. >> reporter: alexis rodriguez and his family did laundry across the street from where the tree came down. it's the best thing they could think of doing to stay dry. >> it was raining all day. we might as well do our laundry, something inside because it's rained a lot today. >> reporter: definitely a lot of rain. now you can see these branches are still out here. they'll be cleaned up tomorrow. as drew mentioned, during tomorrow morning's commute there could be a lot of standing water. chp also reminding everyone to keep an eye out. in south san francisco, unser hassan, abc7 news. >> thanks. a spout off the santa cruz. thisornado tha formsland. the weather service said there was a strong cell moving ashore at the time. cities across the bay area felt the storm,

especially drivers. take a look. this car ended up in the healdsburg creek off highway 101 in santa rosa. the driver was rescued by an off-duty emt after hitting their head. no word on their condition. another car overturned on scenic avenue in san anselmo, but nobody was hurt. meantime, the oakland zoo was forced to close its doors the second day in a row. it also had to cancel what appears its final showing of zoo lights. they issued this tweet earlier today thanking everyone for a great season. to the north bay now where we are told flooding canceled the showing of aqua man this afternoon, at the theater in fairfax, the movie goers say the rest of the theater, though, appeared to be fine. now, the downpour caused major problems for homeowners in the north bay. this is a home in san anselmo at 1:30 today. floods knocked down part of the eowner said he was checking on the culverts and everything was fine, but he stepped away for just two

minutes and that's when that fence went down. >> and i noticed the part of the fence had been knocked into the little creek there, and it started flooding. the front yard flooded. it was actually a couple feet of water right there. and we had to open the gate. >> bad timing. just two minutes. he told us water did get into his garage, but his home stayed dry. counting down, we are just one day away from the college foot ball playoff national championship game. and the storm certainly had a big impact tonight. the cold weather and the rain forced cancellations of a few game-related events. abc7 news reporter amanda dell castillo is live at levi stadium with more details on this. good to see you no prel at least. >> reporter: i know. still have the hat on, though. it's still wet out here. dion, the stadium is all set for tomorrow's match up between beusofeaerdemso we ccele

cold, wet and windy in the south bay, but conditions couldn't keep this group from college foot ball playoff championship fun. >> i had like four layers on under here. >> reporter: the cold meant little to those lined up outside discovery meadow park in downtown san jose. the scheduled concert canceled because of weather conditions. sunday would have brought the final performances in at&t's three-night free concert series. ellie golding was scheduled to perform. golding tweeting out, i'm so sorry, everyone, with a broken heart emoji. >> very discouraging. we waited a very long time. >> reporter: and others traveled a really long distance. clemson fan and resident christmas short said she was going to stay in san francisco but the weather interfered. the n b. >> i always hrdt was beautifulere, gorgeous, weather perfect. c sunday doesn't surprise me. i did new york for new year's.

avalanche data shows the area under a high avalanche warning through 7:00 tomorrow morning. the central sierra nevada includes parts of the south lake tahoe and incline village. this avalanche alert, though, keep in mind, does not apply to ski areas or stretches of mountain highway where avalanche mitigation programs are in place. as the storm soaks us here in the bay area, it is dumping several feet in the sierra. the placer county sheriff's office shot this video you see here, showing conditions near lake tahoe. you can see there are several inches of fresh snow there. now, even if you don't ski or snowboarad, that snow will play a big role in determining if california will or will not have a drought this year. and if you're thinking about heading up to the mountains, you might want to hold off. there are multiple closures, including parts of i-80 and highways 88 and 89 because of whiteout conditions. this video is from earlier in the day at king vail on i-80.

you can see there the roadway still blanketed in snow. chains are required on most of the open roads. now, abc7 news reporter melanie woodrow was in lake tahoe this weekend, and hit some pretty bad traffic heading back to san francisco today. she talked to us on abc7 news at 6:00 tonight after making it just 13 miles in seven hours. she says she didn't start making good headway until almost 7:30 tonight. >> reporter: i've seen cal trans out here, definitely a couple chp vehicles. most people being helpful to one another. when we do see cars that are stuck or, you know, don't have all-wheel drive or don't have chains on their tires, we're seeing drivers that are getting out really helping one another. >> good to see that good will. we heard from melanie 30 minutes ago. she finally made it home after almost 12 hours. she said she is dead tired, brk. meantime, taking a look at

thanks for staying with us as we take a live look at live doppler 7. you can see they're not as green as it was earlier today. we will have another update on the weather from meteorologist drew tuma in just a few minutes. hundreds turned out for a benefit concert for the victims of last year's california wildfires. all of this was part of a series of events hosted by incoming governor gavin newsom and his wife ahead of tomorrow's inauguration. abc7 news reporter carlos salcedo is live for us in sacramento tonight where things have just wrapped up. carlos, how was it? >> reporter: that's right, dion. the event just ended. the concert just wrapped up half an hour ago behind me at the golden 1 center. the event as you mentioned raised money fire victims of the california wildfires. despite this rain, many people showed up. the headliners of course,

pitbull and common. ♪ i'll always be at home in paradise ♪ ♪ >> reporter: some of the performers shared a deeper connection to the town of paradise. paradise native cold weather socks. but all in attendance were here to support those still hurting. >> i know you came here to enjoy yourself, but each and every one of you are making a big contribution to folks that desperately need your support. >> reporter: california is soon to be first family hosted the california rises benefit concert. the event raises funds for survivors of the recent california wildfires. for a few in the crowd, being here was personal. >> we have family, friends at the house. they lost their house completely devastated. and they're really good friends of our family so we're here to help them out. >> reporter: public officials from the devastated communities of butte county received a warm welcome. >> so, thank you all very, very much. >> reporter: including sheriff cory honey. >> the outpouring of support my

community has received from all over the state is incredible. this is just another example of how people have come together. ♪ ♪ >> reporter: governor elect gavin newsom had seen the devastation up close, having toured the communities in the fire's aftermath. >> to turn this into a charitable event for a fire that was the most devastating fire in california history, for its victims and to celebrate the first responders is just the right thing to do. and i'm glad we did that. >> reporter: and close to $5 million were raised here at the event. all that money going to help victims of the california wildfires. the attention, of course, now turns to newsome's inauguration at the state capital here monday. in sacramento, carlos salcedo, abc7 news. >> carlos, thank you. a courthouse damaged by the 2014 napa earthquake is finally going to reopen for business tomorrow. the building had numerous cracks and a chunk even fell off near the roof line. part of the reason why it took

more than four years is because the building opened back in 1879, and is on the national register of historic places. repairs are estimated at about $23 million. mayor libby schaaf and other oakland elected officials will be sworn in tomorrow at city hall. schaaf will take the oath of office for her second term at about 11:00 a.m. along with city auditor courtney reubeny and several city council and school board members. the ceremony is free and open to the public, but space is limited. the mayor's inaugural gala will be held later this week. over in the east bay, a young woman will appear in court tomorrow to answer charges she bit a jogger. but tonight, her attorney is accusing the jogger of starting the violent encounter. the jogger claims the woman's two dogs attacked her along the golden rod trail in the oakland hills. that jogger then began using pepper spray to repel the dogs. but the dog owner's attorney insists the jogger cindy stainer

overreacted. >> my client tried to grab the pepper spray from her hand. it was at that point miss trainer grabbed my client by the hair, kneed her in the groin and attacked her. when she had my client's hair, my client bit her to release her. all she had done in this case was defend her dogs against an unprovoked attack. >> the suspect is identified as 19-year-old oakland resident alma cadwalader. she has no prior criminal record. we were talking about doppler 7. let's get to drew tuma in the weather center. things look intense, but it won't stay there for long. >> that's right, dion. it has been a day filled with rain and wind. we're seeing the strong tail end of the storm. it was tracking today, it continues to track the light showers. the heavy rain is out of here. we zoom on in to where we have some light showers in the inland east bay and the south bay. you can see over the last hour

or so, they are pushing off to the east. and we are going to quiet down our skies tonight. however, the storm has done its damage. we have numerous reports of water on roadways. these are all areas that have seen flooding reports over the past 12 hours, and we are going to see that standing water on our roads tomorrow morning. so really good idea, add some extra time to that morning commute. the good news, the rain is going to get out of here. tomorrow morning future weather showing you by 7:00 in the morning we're not tracking any rain overhead. but it will be a rather gray start to the day with overcast skies. the sierra still has a winter tomorrow warning in effect. this lasts until 4:00 tomorrow morning. could see a couple additional inches, this is on top of 1 to 2 feet of snow. we have already seen in the sierra. look at rainfall today. this is very impressive over the past 24 hours. a lot of cities have seen more than an inch of rain from the storm system. more than that in the north bay. over 2 inches in some spots.soe

storm on our sunday. temperature wise, 40s and 50s, a couple spots like ukiah. clear lake dropped into the 30s. most spots will hold in the 40s overnight tonight. right now the other story, the winds are backing off. you can see wind speeds no longer near that 40, 50 mile per hour range. our strongest gusts now 20 to 30. that's san francisco and livermore. and the winds will just continue to calm down overnight. future tracker wind gusts will show you by 6:00, 7:00 in the morning on monday, it is a calm picture. no gusty winds to start off our day tomorrow. so overnight tonight, that rain is exiting. the clouds are hanging close. temperature wise, most spots will drop into the 40s over the next 12 hour. so we'll break down your monday. the 12-hour day planner, it's really a gray day. and the morning watch out for water on the roadways. it's a lot of cloud cover on your monday. temperatures in the mid 50s to low 60s. if you are headed to the championship college football game tomorrow night, levi stadium, you don't need the rain

oh, check this out. a deer has been set free after getting into a pretty tough spot in aurora, colorado. colorado parks and wildlife shared this video last night on facebook. the white tail buck fell down this uncovered manhole. officers had to tranquilize him while a construction crew helped lift him out. a cover has since been put on to prevent anything else from becoming trapped. there's a really big manhole. >> yes, absolutely. they should have covered that a long time ago. >> in the first place, yeah. >> well, we have wild card weekend finally came to a close. it lived up to its name. a few wild plays to end the weekend. did a double doink end the bears season? the eagles after the

>> once again, good evening. i'm dion lim. in tonight's headlines now, toppled trees and downed power lines kept firefighters and pg&e crews busy tonight. they're looking at the aftermath of today's storm which included a knocked down tree in south san francisco. flooding knocked over fences and caused other damage in san anselmo. rain and wind dampened college foot ball fans when an outdoor concert was canceled in san jose. it was to feature eli goulding and one republic. rain or shine the national championship is scheduled still at levi stadium tomorrow night. the match up is between alabama examine clemson. governor elect gavin newsom held a benefit concert to help those in butte county. it was to celebrate newsome being sworn in as governor tomorrow. the democrat will serve as california's 40th chief executive. homeowners face the job of

cleaning up after high winds snapped trees and knocked down power lines across seattle. winds topped 60 miles an hour late last night and early this morning. a large tree ripped walls apart when it fell on one man's home. he spent the night in a hotel after escaping from his mangled house in north hill, washington. that man did not want to appear on camera. >> i heard something hit the side of the house. i got out of my bedroom, walked to that bedroom to shine the flashlight down on the driveway to see what happened. as soon as i turned the flashlight on, the tree fell, and boom, right behind me. i was lucky. that's all there is to t. >> it barely missed him. >> whew, lucky indeed. 320,000 people lost their electricity at one point during the storm. there are no reports of anshutdn its third week with no end in sight. white house administration officials met with congressional aids over the weekend trying to reach an agreement.

sketch police released earlier, and abc reporter marcus moore explains. >> reporter: tonight police making an arrest in the tragic death of 7-year-old jazmine barnes. a death her family initially feared was racially motivated. eric black 20 years old appearing before a texas judge charged with capital murder in connection with the shooting death one week ago today. authorities now say this all may have been the case of mistaken identity. >> mr. black has acknowledged his role in jazmine's murder and we've also received information that this involves a second individual as well. >> reporter: police making the arrest after they say a tip was september to a well-known civil rights activist. a law enforcement source allegedly telling police black was driving the vehicle during the shooting and that the suspect or suspects may have opened fire on the wrong car. the announcement marking a major twist in this case that up until yesterday was focused heavily on finding this red pickup truck captured on video speeding away from the scene of the shooting and this sketch. >> you're talking about small children. they witnessed something very

movie and tv stars hit hollywood for the golden globe awards tonight. an d sandra oh co-hosted the show. she won for best performance by an actress in a tv series drama. she was pretty excited. bohemian rhapsody won best drama and its star won best actor. the upset of the night goes to green book, which took home three awards including best movie, musical or comedy. and glenn close won best actress in a drama an award many expected to go to lady gaga. speaking of awards, the golden globes are considered by some a warm up for the oscars. those are next month, february 24th, to be exact. you can watch them right here on abc 7. all right. finally tonight, one last check of the weather and what we can expect for tomorrow's drive. drew. >> you know what, the rain is exiting as we speak, so the
