the greek theater. now the road itself reopened within the last hour or so, but it was closed for much of the day as tree service workers were removing the debris. this selfie was taken moments after a 250-foot eucalyptus tree came crashing down on a vehicle. you can hear the rain coming down loudly sunday afternoon on the berkeley campus. the windy conditions were strong enough to topple the massive tree, killing a 32-year-old man inside the car. >> in all my life, i've never had anything like this happen to me. i've seen trees come down. i've seen branches fall off. but typically, the wind is blowing the storm. and yesterday, it's pretty large storm. >> today tree service workers continue to clean up debris, even chopping down another eucalyptus tree nearby. the man killed was not a student. authorities believe he could have been visiting someone on campus. >> let's hope that that was sort

of a freak accident. i doubt that it's going to be something that continues to happen, but definitely something that campus should be aware of. >> campus officials say they're in the process of reviewing ongoing tree assessments. last month a protest delayed the removal of dozens of trees from people's park in berkeley. trees are being cut down as part of a wider project to catch up on deferred maintenance. students believe more can be done to better maintain the trees. >> look at the structural integrity of some of these trees just to make sure it's not dangerous to anybody. >> and it's unclear if the campus will take any further action. now the coroner's office has identified the man killed as 32-year-old alexander grant of novato. reporting live on the uc berkeley campus, carlos salcedo, abc 7 news. >> just a terrible piece of bad luck, carlos. awful. thank you. >> that tree came down during yesterday's heavy rain, and more stormy weather is coming our way. >> yeah, a lot of rain, a lot of

wind. sandhya patel is here with the forecast. sandhya? >> yeah, dan and kristen. that stormy weather could spell problems over the next several days. we do have some spotty light showers. this is not the storm. it's just a moist flow across cloverdale, geyserville, geyser's road, dry creek road. the main storm is still well off the coastline. and it is winding up. this is why we're expecting some strong winds. so it's a level 2 on our impact tomorrow on wednesday. expecting anywhere from 1 to 3 inches of rain in the north bay in the mountains. up to 3/4 of an inch in other areas. wind gusts 45 to 60 miles per hour. wind advisory 7:00 a.m. tomorrow to 10:00 a.m. wednesday. could see some downed trees, blowing debris and isolated power outages not out of the question. same storm kicking up the surf. high surf advisory nine p.m. tomorrow night until 9:00 p.m. wednesday. large westerly swell. the break coerce be 18 to 24 feet or higher, possibly over 27 feet, which means the potential is there for some low-lying

flooding right along the coast. i'll be back with an hour-by-hour timeline coming up. kristen, dan? >> thank you very much. california has a new governor tonight. gavin newsom was sworn in today as the state's new leader. >> and late today in his first act as governor, he signed an executive order establishing a drug purchase marketplace. it could make california the biggest single purchaser of prescription drugs in the country through medi-cal. >> now the idea here is to have greater leverage in negotiating lower prices, something the new governor hopes will lead to a ripple effect of lower prices for other customers. >> abc 7 news reporter laura anthony joins us from sacramento with more on the governor's eventful first day. laura? >> gavin newsom ran on a bold agenda, and we saw no letup in that today at the capitol. in his speech when he talked about issues like health care and protects for immigrants, but we also saw a softer side of the new governor, especially when his young son took the stage with him. >> this is a time for courage, and we will rise to meet it.

and homelessness in many of its cities. in sacramento, laura anthony, abc 7 news. >> laura, thank you. now as laura mentioned, the governor's son dutch right there. dad was busy giving his address. the 2-year-old decided to make a second appearance and joined him on the stage. he seemed a little bit dazed. and when his mom, the first partner came to get him, dutch darted behind his dad and he stands there, wandered to the edge of the stage where everyone could see him. his brother tried to get him to come down. yeah, but dutch just was not interested. he said i'm good. i'm good right here. he appeared to dance a little bit. and then mom and his big brother finally decided hey, his time in the spotlight was up. they grab him. >> that's cute. >> i know. and governor newsom joked this is exactly how everything was scripted. that was kind of a riley moment for him. >> like steph curry. after today's ceremony, arnold schwarzenegger took a selfie with gavin newsom and his wife.

when firefighters arrived, they found the body in the water and caught in some bushes. it's not clear how the man got there or if the weather had anything to do with the man's death. the creek was swollen because of this weekend's storms. and we are now hearing from the attorney for a jogger who was bitten by a woman in the oakland hills. it happened last week at shebo regional park. the jogger had pepper sprayed the woman's dogs after they bit her shorts. >> the alameda county district attorney's office says it has not yet made a charging decision involving alma cadwalder. she bit a woman in oakland after stayner pepper sprayed her dogs. >> my client is a victim of a very horrendous assault. >> attorney john o'conner is representing stayner, the jogger. he says one of cadwalder's two dogs bit her shorts though they didn't get her skin. >> the next bite was going to be

of her skin she feared. she did not directly pepper spray the dogs. she sprayed above their heads because she has experience and knows any animal will simply be distracted. >> a claim cadwalder's attorney disputes there. >> no bite or nip or barking even. >> after cadwalder's attorney held a press conference suggesting stayner was the assaila assailant. >> my client bit to get her to release her, and all she had done in this case was to defend first her dogs against an unprovoked attack and then herself from yet another unprovoked attack. >> o'connor claims cadwalder waited for stayner 20 minutes after she pepper sprayed the dogs as she finished her run. >> throws her to the ground, hits her on the head several times. my client has suffered a concussion. she has had it diagnosed. finally, the owner bit her so hard that she bit through the jacket. >> o'conner says stayner is an er nurse who is also a dog owner. a spokesperson cadwalder hired

>> it didn't just happen. crews laid down new turf over a 24-hour period last tuesday, the day after the red box bowl between oregon and michigan state. now the field remained covered for the weekend but is expected to be slippery from all the rain. >> levi's does have a history of poor turf. it had to be resodded several weeks in a row during the inaugural season in 2014. the next year the kicker for the nfl's baltimore ravens missed a field goal when his planted foot sank deep into the turf. there were also footing issues during the super bowl in 2016. crews are certainly hoping for better results tonight. >> we shall see. the halftime show for the national championship is happening on treasure island. sky 7 is there live right now. you can see all the preparations under way. >> and you can see the stage. the show includes the group imagine dragons. so there is a whole lot of excitement for the show, but also for the game. >> yeah, that stage looks fantastic. abc 7 news reporter david louie is life outside levi's stadium with the fans.

david? >> well, you know, normally we see a lot of smoke coming from the parking lot before the games from all the tailgating parties. the only smoke we're seeing right now is residue left over from the fireworks they just set off at the game. a lot of fans had to make due with cold cut sandwiches. they seemed to be a lot hungrier for a national title. you could easily make out the alabama boosters from the clemson fans, but they did have one thing in common. cold food for their tailgate parties. what would you be eating if you had a tailgate at home? >> barbecue. it's all barbecue. >> buying deli sandwich trays and beer substituted for other hot food since these fans mostly hail from out of state. so bringing along a grill just wasn't possible. they already spent a lot of money to come for this national championship game. young james miller knows it was a lot of money. >> about 4,000, maybe something dollars. i don't. but it was lot of money. but we all combined it i guess. >> it's worth it to three generations this family so they

bay and the mountains and the wet pattern continues into the weekend. on our impact scale, this is a moderate strength storm for tomorrow. going into early wednesday, then a level 1. rainfall totals through wednesday night, 1 to 3 inches in the north bay in the mountains. up to 3/4 an inch in other areas. 45 to 65 miles per hour wind gusts expected. the reason why we made this a level 2, the ground is saturated. you add any more rain, you could have potential problems like minor low-lying flooding. please be vigilant and there could be isolated power outages along with downed trees. 5:00 a.m. tomorrow the winds begin to increase. as we head into 11:00 a.m., g t gusting. still pretty windy. and when the ground is saturated like i said, we could see some trees toppling like we saw over the weekend. 5:00 a.m. tomorrow, a few light showers in the north bay. you really have to wait for the rest of the bay area until later

on in the day for the storm. 8:00 a.m. still primarily in the north bay. watch what happens as the day goes on. the showers that are really light and spotty become heavier. 4:30 around mendocino coastline tomorrow afternoon. 6:30 across the western portion of our viewing area. and then actually beginning to cross. 8:00 p.m. it's going to be stormy out across the region, 11:00 p.m., light to moderate rain. and turning to scattered showers for the wednesday morning commute between 5:00 and 8:00 a.m. still some showers into thetern system winds down. rainfall totals most impressive up to our north, where over 2 inches, up to 3 inches expected. far less rain across the rest of our region. first thing tomorrow morning, clouds, wind will begin to increase. some showers, temperatures 40s, 50s. tomorrow afternoon, you're looking at readings in the 50s and the 60s. and like i said, you'll have to wait for that storm to spread from north to south. the accuweather seven-day forecast level 2 tomorrow. tomorrow night into wednesday morning, isolated thunderstorm not out of the question.

streets. city crews completed work on a bike line on a stretch of howard street between sixth and 11th streets. the work is part of a bike and pedestrian safety plan pushed by supervisor jane kim who helped cut the ribbon today. it has been the site of three fatalities in recent days. along with safety, kim believes the lanes will encourage more people to ride bike, creating a point of view impact on the environment. >> getting to an environment that we can all be proud of and actually fighting climate change, unlike our president at the white house. we know that we need to get people out of their cars. and part of how we can do that is getting people on their feet, on munni, but also on our bikes. >> the san francisco transportation agency says the bike lane stretches for 2.5 miles along howard street. pedestrian safety improvements have also been added to seven intersections. all right. the lineup for this year's bottle rock has been reviewed, and there is a bit of a twist.
