abc 7 news reporter melanie woodrow is live at the san francisco dmv with the story. melanie? >> reporter: ama and larry, if you are confused by this, don't worry. so are people here at the dmv trying to get their real i.d. these appointments are extremely difficult to come by. with the thursday deadline looming, the department of homeland security extended california's federal real i.d. extension to april 1st, 2019. the existing extension granted to the department of motor vehicles was set to expire tomorrow. the expiration would have meant anyone flying domestically would have needed a passport or other government i.d. to fly within the united states. a driver's license would not have been enough. people here at the san francisco dmv had no idea. >> if they need a passport and don't have it, i'm upset at the airport trying to run home to get it and see if i could make my flight and i'm usually running behind so that is very

problematic for a guy like me. >> reporter: and yesterday the california dmv said it had been working for a year to be complaint with the real i.d. act and due to the government shutdown, there have been to final confirmation about whether the existing extension set to spire on thursday would be thurj extended and mean time available appointments to get a real i.d. are impossible to find. >> when i tried to make an appointment in san francisco, i got a message that said all of the appointments at this office are taken. i did find an appointment on february 13th in bakersfield. the appointment available for the other bay area cities we checked was march or april. >> according to dhs, the new extension granted to california will allow sufficient time to complete the review of the california real i.d. compliance certification. and the takeaway is that you can still continue to use your california state driver's license to travel, to fly domestically. we'll put a list of other acceptable identification on our

projections about where the market is heading. leslie? >> reporter: well, brace yourself. things are changing. the days of listing a home and selling in a day or two, multiple offers, that is pretty much gone. in its place, here in the east bay, we even hear about homes being listed and selling for under asking price. >> what do you have to tell sellers now? you kind of missed the peak of the market. the peak of the market was may and june of 2018. market timing has doubled. prices are now under list on average. >> reporter: this broker said it is not seasonal. it is just 2019. >> since june of last year until even up to today we have definitely seen prices go down. and they're continuing on a downward motion. >> reporter: here at the bay east association of realtors, this month is when they assess what the spring and summer market will be like.

potential buyers are definitely interested. the number of people dropping by open houses has doubled in the last couple of weeks. interest rates are still relatively affordable. but there is still turmoil. >> what impact has the stock market downturn having? >> it changes attitudes and slows people down. their thrust to want to buy seems to slow down when the market does what it is doing. oo >> reporter: and the government shutdown is just starting to have an impact. >> the internal revenue provide reports for underwriting and so that is delays and there may be impact on fha and fannie mae and freddie mac. so it is something that the real estate profession is watching. >> reporter: the advice for sellers -- >> it will just take longer and just be happy with the one great offer you get. and that is being real. >> reporter: being real. homeowners here in the bay area have gotten used to a appreciation of like 18%.

have said they could be used as a hot rod. turned into a food truck. >> reporter: philip has an interesting job. he's in charge of helping b.a.r.t. dispose of 669 train cars. legacy cars they're called. some built starting in the late 1960s and put into service as b.a.r.t. started rolling in 1972. in this age of recycling he's opening they could be repurposed by others if they are willing to buy them. no fair market price has been determined. and b.a.r.t. hasn't said how it will use the proceeds. however, the federal transit administration will be getting a cut for providing b.a.r.t. with money to rehappen most -- to rehab the cars in 1998 and 2002. >> if the fleet is over $5,000, the fta is due to receive their percentage of the proceeds. >> reporter: the fta share ranes from 55% to 70%. possible used for the old cars include museums, food truck and homeless shelters. >> there is nostalgia around this. so i think that a lot of people
