melanie woodrow is live at the san francisco dmv with the story. melanie? >> reporter: well here is something. if you are confused, you are not alone. people here at the dmv in san francisco that has been waiting to get their real i.d. are also confused and those appointments ar difficult to come by. at the 11th hour, the department of homeland security extended california's federal real i.d. extension to april 1st, 2019. the existing extension granted to the department of motor vehicles was set to expire tomorrow. the expiration would have meant that anyone flying -- domestically would need a government i.d. to fly in the united states. a driver's license would not have been enough. people here at the san francisco dmv had no idea. >> if they need a passport, i don't have it then i'm upset at the airport trying to run home to get it to see if i could make my flight and i'm usually running behind so that would be very problematic for a guy like me. >> reporter: as of yesterday

california dmv said they had been working for a year to be complaint with the real i.d. act and due to the government shutdown there have been to final confirmation about whether the existing extension set to expire thursday would be further extended. meantime available appointments to get a real i.d. are nearly impossible to find. >> when i tried to make an appointment in san francisco, i got a message that said, sorry, all appointments at this office are taken. i did find an appointment available february 13th in bakersfield. the appointment availability for most of the other bay area cities we checked was march or april. according to dhs, the new extension granted to california will allow sufficient time to complete the review of california's real i.d. compliance certification. so the takeaway here is that you can still use your california state issued driver's license to fly domestically. we've put a list of other forms of acceptable identification on our website at abc7news.com. in san francisco, melanie

california is going to remain open to business. >> reporter: now by the way, ma took a page from the playbook of her political mentor. burton led the same chant cursing out the president at the state democratic convention in 2017. so far it is unclear if ma's message has reached the president. he has not tweeted about it. now in our abc 7 news poll, we are asking do you think ma's cursing of president trump is standing up for california or not appropriate? just head to show show. right now results say 36% and a third say standing up for california and two thirds are saying that is not appropriate. we've seen his ads, bay area billionaire tom steyer announcing he is not throwing his name into the race for president. however, what he plans to do instead is certainly raising some eyebrows. the decision comes as many democratic contenders are gearing up to announce their bids. right now dozens could be in the running. abc 7 news reporter chris nguyen

new details tonight on the investigation into the shooting death of a car mont high school football players in belmont. abc 7 news reporter vic lee is live at the high school with tonight's follow-up. vic? >> reporter: well aside from the fact that they have yet to find the gun and there have not been arrests, we've learned belmont police have served several search warrants across the bay area. the main one being in pleasanton last night. yesterday there was optimism among law enforcement that the investigation into the shooting

death of 17-year-old muhammed othman would end quickly with an arrest of the shooter. last night an army of police officers from numerous jurisdictions surrounded a home in the east bay town of pleasanton. >> they used a loud speak tore call the three suspects or whoever out. >> reporter: today belmont police captain patrick hell orran spoke with abc 7 news about the police action. >> no arrests have been made. we have detained several people but no one is in custody. >> reporter: so the investigation continues. >> we're investigating many leads that came in through people we've talked to. >> reporter: but he said the case is complicated. >> as you said, it is very involved investigation. we've brought in assistance from both inside and outside of san mateo county. >> alicia had also hoped for a quick arrest. he is a close family friend and has known the teenager since he was nine. he was with muhammed's mother at central elementary school on
