we want to get right to that latest on the government shutdown. absolute stalemate right now. president trump is going to head to the border to make his case. want to show you the scene in mcallen, texas, where the president is going to tour this afternoon. >> the president is headed there as the government shutdown enters day 20, which is one day away from matching the longest shutdown on record. >> yeah, and what happens next could depend on a very small group of republicans and whether they decide to go against the president. our senior national correspondent mary bruce has more on that from capitol hill. mary, despite the president's insistence that his party is unified over the shutdown this morning, there are some cracks in the ranks? >> reporter: the president is ed a nant he has his party's support but this morning there are signs of the gop support is splintering, at least four moderate republicans are uneasy suggesting they want to re-open the government with or without the funding for the president's wall and brought some of their concerns to the president but it is clear the

president isn't budging. white house adviser jared kushner to see if they can come up with some kind of compromise to get bipartisan support. the senate mitch mcconnell is insisting he will not bring up any measure to fund the government unless he is certain the president is on board. >> democrats ramping up the pressure on mcconnell. there seems to be no end in sight and the president, it seems, is leaning closer to declaring this national emergency now. >> reporter: there is one more card the president could play. gress and uslare that national n e em military funds to build his border wall. cecilia, we know that the white house is looking into this and the legal ramifications of this. here on the hill this is highly divisive idea. even some of the president's top allies they're not even certain it's legal. and it would almost certainly be challenged in the courts but, cecilia, it is a way that the

president would claim a political win while coming up with a way to re-open the government. >> division in the administration as well. okay, mary, thanks. >> let's bring that to jon karl, our chief white house correspondent. there is opposition in republican ranks to this idea of declaring a national emergency but the president clearly considering it. one of the big questions is, what kind of a precedent it would set? >> reporter: george, good morning. some conservatives worried about this. i'm told white house lawyers have been looking at this for months. before this current impasse. meanwhile, the president is heading to the mexican border where he hopes to make a dramatic appeal for his border wall. with talks broken down he is making a trip to the mexican border, the first trip there since he surveyed prototypes of his promised wall nearly a year ago. the president's trip follows a dramatic scene at the white house where he walked out on talks with democratic

leaders unwilling to give him any taxpayer money for his border wall. the president's meeting with congressional leaders lasted just 15 minutes. >> he sort of slammed the table and when leader pelosi said she didn't agree with the wall, he just walked out and said we have nothing to discuss. >> reporter: the president on twitter called it a total waste of time. >> i think the president made his position very clear today, that there will be no deal without a wall. >> reporter: meanwhile, some 800,000 federal workers are caught in the cross fire. most of them to go without the paycheck they're due to receive tomorrow. we asked the president whether he'd consider signing bills to d ith nd w democrats over border security. >> jon, you think i should just sign? >> i'm saying that if you sign that these workers can start getting paid. the government can start -- >> you would do that if you were in my position? you would do that? >> i'm not in your position. i'm asking you -- >> i'm asking you, would you do that if you were in my position?

if you would do that, you should never be in this position because you'd never get anything done. good-bye, everybody. thank you very much. thank you. >> thank you, mr. president. >> reporter: the president will be briefed by border patrol agents not far from the rio grande river. meanwhile, there are no further talks scheduled here in washington between the president and democrats. >> yeah, complete breakdown but we are glad you're in your position, jon. thank you. and president trump will be in mcallen, texas, this afternoon minutes from the busiest area for border crossings. matt gutman has been on the ground there speaking with those officers who patrol that border but, matt, not everyone there wants this wall. >> reporter: that's right, cecilia. we spent the day with the border patrol chief who will brief the president today. he took us to what he said is the busiest spot along the entirety of the u.s./mexican

border, a spot where he says hundreds of migrants and asylum seekers pour in every day, a process that seemed routine on both sides. >> we make sure they're seen by medical professionals and give them some dry clothes, give them a meal, if they need to bathe. >> reporter: with u.s. agencies overwhelmed here in the rio grande valley that means these migrants will likely be released into the u.s. with a notice to appear in court at some point in the future. >> is that what the president calls catch and release? >> if there was detention space for a mother and a child at a family residential center, we will make that call first but if there's not a detention space, they will put on an ankle bracelet or some sort of monitoring device and they will ultimately be released. >> reporter: raul ortiz is the acting chief of the rio grande sector. he's the man who will brief the president today. the smugglers delivering migrants in raft after raft. carrying that raft back up. the border patrol helping these women and children up the steep embankment. so many surrendering themselves, we struggled to keep up.

>> chief, so, in the last maybe six minutes that we've been here, i don't know how many you counted but it's like, what, 15? >> about 15 individuals. >> they don't come with anything. these people don't have bags. >> the smugglers will take everything from them. >> reporter: nearly 700 asylum seekers come through this area every day. a record 25,000 families crossed from mexico just last month, something the president is calling a humanitarian crisis. it took little crystal and her mother a month to get here from honduras 1500 miles away. she tells me she got to bring only one thing. that barbie. these people have been traveling for months to get here. >> we get our border security mission and then you got the humanitarian mission which this would fall into that humanitarian mission category. >> reporter: cecilia, the border patrol told us it's going to ask for steel fencing in the rio grande, somethingt local

politicians here have told us they don't want and don't actually need. now, it's important to note that that border patrol chief and all border patrol agents are now not being paid. in fact, the border patrol union is now suing the federal government. cecilia. >> they indeed are. thank you, matt. michael. >> thank you, cecilia. now to that winter weather that is on the move. snow causing spinouts and temperatures plunging in the midwest. well, now, the northeast is also bracing for a deep freeze. ginger is tracking it all. good morning, ginger. >> good morning to you, michael. check this out. you can barely see on some of the roads in northeastern ohio. and right here in western new york we're up to and already six plus inches of snow has fallen in some of the lake-effect snow bands so there's still warnings and advisories up for that. still some wind gusts of 40 to 50 miles per hour in parts of the appalachians and mid-atlantic, but you see the winter storm watch back for st. louis? that's the new storm everybody is talking about for the weekend. it really gets going tomorrow in the plains and then really fills in for kansas city to st. louis, central illinois and central indiana on saturday. you could end up with 3 inches to 6 inches of snow especially

who's been missing since friday and this morning san antonio police say they are investigating an alleged cover-up. watch closely and you will see what san antonio, texas, police are calling a staged kidnapping. a woman casually walking up to a car left running and unattended at a gas station. she gets in and drives off. this morning, the fbi and police are desperately searching for 8-month-old king jay davila. investigators say they believe the baby's father, 34-year-old christopher davila, may have set the whole thing up. the baby's mother jasmine gonzalez was on the phone with davila last friday when she says he started yelling his car had been stolen. >> he freaked out. he was panicking. i was like, you know what, hang up and call the cops. i'm going to call the cops, too, so i can push the issue and they can find my son. they said they sent two policemen there. >> reporter: but this morning, authorities say this case is not what it seems. and police do not believe the child was even in the car and adding to the mystery, police say davila's cousin is the woman in the video and is seen in another piece of footage walking

down a street carrying a car seat. >> we can say now without a doubt that this was not a car theft. this was not a kidnapping. this was a staged event. >> reporter: if investigators are right, the question now is, why and more importantly, where is little king jay? and police have searched davila's home and the neighborhood searching for any evidence and they have used dogs to search for any trace of this little boy who has been missing for nearly a week. cecilia. >> we certainly hope he is okay. marcus, thank you. two frightening close calls. first, take a look at this. dash cam video, a very lucky driver thankfully safe after a massive highway sign comes crashing down on her car. that's in melbourne, australia, completely demolished that car. yikes. amazingly the woman escaped with only minor injuries. an investigation is under way into how that sign collapsed. and that other close call we want to tell you about. a high-speed chase in hollywood overnight, a driver stealing a van and leading police on a dangerous run

knocking over traffic lights, barreling through intersections, crashing into other vehicles and narrowly missing pedestrians. our los angeles station kabc ught it om the chopper. the chase finally ends when the driver loses control of the van slamming into more parked cars before a man gets out the passenger side. he turns out to be the driver and is now in police custody. we turn to that major change coming for the oscars. looking like hollywood's biggest night will go without a solo host after kevin hart told michael right here on "gma" that he won't reconsider his decision to drop out. t.j. holmes here with the latest. >> good morning. this is one of hollywood's favorite annual guessing games, who will host the academy awards, and with the show coming up just next month, we finally may have an answer and the answer is not a name. the answer, george, is nobody. just over a month before the oscars and the academy still hasn't found a host. >> and now, please welcome your host --

and how the roommate was caught. >> reporter: at first they all thought the ticket was worth 10 grand. it turns out it's worth 10 million and police say the roommate tried taking it all. so, this morning, a twist to that saying, keep your friends close, but your lottery ticket closer. this morning, the man trying to claim a winning lottery prize instead ending up in handcuffs. the alleged plot revealed when police say his roommate, the real winner, brought the scratch-off ticket in to claim a $10,000 prize. that's when lotto officials told him the ticket wasn't a winner, it was a fake. >> once our suspect is aware that his roommate has a winning ticket, a couple hours later, he goes to the same store, buys the same style of ticket to alter it to make it look like the winning ticket. >> reporter: the next day the suspected ticket thief then showing up at lottery headquarters with the real scratcher learning it was actually worth $10 million, not 10,000. lottery officials launching an

investigation going to the store where it was sold in vacaville, california, and looking at surveillance video, later confronting the suspect with this altered ticket. >> he was pretty shocked. clearly, he had the interview with the lottery officials thinking he was going to collect the $10 million and then once he was greeted by vacaville police department and arrested, his happiness obviously changed. >> reporter: so, will the real winner get the cash? well, the california lottery tells abc news, once the lottery verifies the identity of the winner of the ticket it will pay that claimant the $10 million prize. so the roommate/suspect has been charged with grand theft. he'll appear in court this afternoon. california lottery officials say this case shows why winners should immediately sign those tickets and store them in a safe place. >> ooh. >> i'm immediately going to cash it. i have no problem. >> only if it's yours. >> only if it's yours. good piece of advice, gio. thank you for that. and coming up, apps you can't live without and one that could finally help you cut back on screen time.

>> >>. >> michael, you can see nearly a half foot of snow and lake-effect snow bands in northeastern ohio. you still on the radar western new york, western pennsylvania getting a lot of these. fulton, new york, you can see the wind that came with it. gusts up to 50 miles per hour and can still see that in parts of the mid-atlantic but over here where st. louis is highlighted, that is the next storm. so it's going to all start tomorrow in the plains and will move across saturday. this is a weekend snowstorm if you're in kansas city, central illinois or central indiana. you can end up with three to six inches especially the closer you are to that rain/snow line and i think you'll get really heavy bands and think by sunday, the mid-atlantic starts so northern virginia into delaware, you're going to get snow. how much snow and how far north it reaches is all going to depend on the exact track of this storm. we'll keep looking at it and i'll give you a much bigger

25 years since your character on "seinfeld." a deliciously demented dentist. >> that's a good way to put it. >> thank you so much. what's your favorite memory from that? >> it was like going to comedy boot camp to be in the presence of larry david and jerry seinfeld and jason and julia. it was amazing to be able to be there and learn how they craft a joke like a surgeon. it's really amazing. >> it looks so natural like he's just thinking, but it really was that precise. >> just like surgery. but it is amazing. one time we were doing a scene in my dentist's office and i was rehearsing after -- by myself and i heard a voice say, you know what would be funny and i looked around and there was a ladder and i looked up on top of th andhere is an electrician and he's adjusting a light and i said, what?

he goes, it aughing gas on jerry you take a hit yourself first. and i went, oh, my god. that's hilarious. so i waited until we were shooting and i did it. i said, nurse, may i have the nitrous oxide. good. and -- that's good and then -- and jerry fell apart. it was funny. it was really funny and they were praising -- oh, that was so funny. i go, no, no, it's the guy and i couldn't find him and i said, there he is. and everybody turned and by now he was leaning on a doorjamb and he was like this. i said, he gave it to me and he just went -- like, i got a million of them. that's just a little thing. [ applause ] >> but so memorable though, just the little things, so memorable. but now i want to talk about "the upside." you play a successful

businessman who is a quadriplegic and kevin hart plays an ex-con who is your caregiver but this is based off an international hit from france. >> yeah. >> was it a little scary to take on something that's already been a big international hit? >> it was daunting, yes, because i really love that movie. it was done so well. the actors were terrific and the story -- based on a true story about these unlikely friends who to this day are still friends. >> it's amazing. >> yeah. and from disparate situations, their culture is different, economic opportunities and -- everything was different and how these two men became friends. it's really a great story about male bonding and how this happens and how we bond as men and it's very hopeful. it's full of laughs and a lot of heartfelt experiences and i'm just really proud of it. >> you guys want to see a look? made me think of these people who are in that condition all the time and the challenges that they face. who are quadriplegics and it's a day-to-day journey for them to be able to face the physical restrictions and how that feeds on you emotionally and it's tough. it's tough, yeah. >> amazing. another role we can't let you go without talking about our favorite, walter white. >> yeah. [ applause ] >> what happened? >> what happened is i want to see him on the prequel, "better call saul". >> i heard michael strahan will be on that show. that's just a rumor but i heard that you might be on it. >> playing somebody who is already in jail, yes. [ applause ] welcome back to "gma." you know we've been working on our insta-home all morning long. right now we'll show you how to add insta-color to your home. i'm here with my friend designer and lifestyle blogger will taylor who has some really easy tips. >> thanks for having me. >> we've done a few projects together. we're kind of addicted to this and these are really easy for you guys. i promise. so first let's start with adding color to a room. i never thought of doing this. you say there's a teeny tiny little way that adds a big pop. >> absolutely. there's always a way to bring bright color into a room. this p

that i'm going to show you now. so we literally just painted along the edge of the door here >> that's it. >> so it's super simple and -- >> you feel like people will notice that? >> if you paint a whole room this coral color it will be overpowering and dominate the room. but this way you bring vibrancy and turn a door into a conversation starter. >> okay, see you guys later. >> bye. >> cute. bookcases. oftentimes we use them as our catchall and they get cluttered. let me come over on this side. a great way to incorporate and declutter. incorporate and declutter. say that five times fast. >> so let's take a look. >> the after. tah-dah. >> okay, so -- >> i see what you did in there. >> so the first thing you do is literally stick color on. that simple. amazing paper from chasing paper. you cut it to size and peel it and stick it on. >> it's called chasing paper? >> yes. >> it's basically like stickers.

no reason you cannot do this. a really fun way to add a lot of value -- color value for not a lot of commitment. >> if i can do it, you can do it. trust me. >> how did you organize? >> okay, so my top tip when it tees to organizg t power take these vases for example. we pulled them together in a trio and altered the height so look visually interesting and it's not about going to the store and buying new things. it's just about organizing what you have in a smart way. >> you don't have to get fabulous coffee table books, just the books you have and try to, organize by color and easier on the eye if it's monochromatic. >> just what we did and look at the storage so i don't know about you but my home is overrun with chargers, cables, all that ugly stuff we need. get a solid bin and put all of the ugly stuff inside to hide it away. >> you can spray paint that bin a pop of color and pop it that sort of pretty limey yellow and there's another way to add a little bit of color. so simple and just makes you happy in the winter. >> and then just keep some clear

storage as well like this lucite tray so you can see that beautiful color on the back too. finally, mirrors, mirrors everywhere a great way to add color to your life. >> we think mirrors for bedrooms, bathrooms, maybe a selfie. i'm definitely guilty when it comes to that. i don't know if you are. this one is perfect because it's a triple threat. adds color, adds pattern and functional so great for vanity, maybe over a dresser. >> you like power in numbers, right? you like to group things like this. >> these are perfect and start as little as $13 from places like home depot. >> forget $13, at flea markets you can find them for $2 and $3, and one is nothing but five is something. >> and that way you can afford to grow your collection over time, maybe along the entryway, perfect. >> if you notice all of these sort of have something in keeping -- all a bit of gold and have some cohesive element. i feel like we're chatting over a coffee right now. you're so good on the organization. you're so great.
