five men receive help from above in australia after floodwaters stranded their car. rescue crews were alerted by one of the men. he says waters were rising around their car during a flash flood after a hunting trip. a helicopter came in and took the men to safety. from peru a first look at a group of fishermen saving a young killer whale. the orca had become trapped in one of their fishing nets. the fishermen called the moment their own version of "free willy" after the 1990s movie series of course. >> did he jump over a wall? >> he did. he did. while a michael jackson song played.

closer to home the cdc is investigating hundreds of cases of potential outbreak of norovirus aboard a cruise ship. >> it happened on the "oasis of the seas" one of the largest cruise ships in the world. here's abc's victor oquendo. >> reporter: one of the world's largest cruise ships heading back to port early. royal caribbean telling abc news 277 people suffered an episode of gastrointestinal illness on board the "oasis of the seas." the cdc now investigating sick passengers like abby perrin and her mother say it came on suddenly. >> in the middle of the night we both started feeling like we had food poisoning. so we had fevers and we were throwing up. they were recommending everyone who's stick to stay in their room. >> reporter: on sunday about 9,000 guests and crew departed port canaveral on the scheduled seven-day caribbean cruise. by tuesday night passengers reportedly started feeling symptoms that included nausea, vomiting and diarrhea as the ship approached jamaica. passengers sharing video of crews trying to sanitize common

so her managers were having to drive her to work. that's until the ellises pulled up to the drive-thru with more than just a request for a big mac. instead they had a big gift ready for her. take a look at this. >> that black car right there's yours. >> are you for real? >> it's max's old car. so we made a deal and we're giving it to you. >> thank you. god bless you. >> i love that. she said god bless you. ellis says he's been fortunate lately and wanted to pass along that good fortune and he knows that vicky will do the same one day as soon as she's able. that is really nice. >> isn't that so sweet? >> and if she's anything like me there are a ton of mcdonald's wrappers on the passenger side seat, empty. >> hopefully when they gave her the car they cleaned it up a little bit. but we'll have to go back to the footage and make sure. thank you for that one. next up, the amazing reunion between the little boy and his teddy bear. when california mom anna picard returned from vacation in hawaii she realized she and her son had left the beloved stuffed bear

sutro behind. and after many tears and an e-mail from anna to the grand hyatt kauai they were informed not only was he safe but he was getting the vip treatment from staff on his extended stay in hawaii. they sent these photos back to anna to ensure that sutro and his new stuffed seal pal had a great time on their extended vacation. there he is getting a manicure. >> living the good life. >> living the good life. look at that view. >> that's beautiful. >> wow! >> poolside lounging. i'm happy to report, though, that sutro is back home in california with his family and he's probably feeling great after all of that r&r. >> pampered. >> no kidding. >> and finally, what does a 16-year-old do at the end of a two-week stay at a hospital? has a floss-off with the nurse who took care of him for two weeks. take a look. ♪

this morning on "world news now," waking up without a paycheck. >> hundreds of thousands of people are not getting paid today thanks to the government shutdown. the president visiting the border, repeated his demand for a wall as the white house reveals plans to possibly go around congress to try and get it. breaking overnight, a teenager who went missing after her parents were murdered months ago finally found alive. who's now in custody. caught on camera, a man repeatedly punched by the police, and he's not the suspect they were after. what led to this tough takedown? cheese lovers, rejoice. a store is making sure you never run out of mac and cheese. where you can get your hands on a 27-pound bucket of the golden goodness. it is friday january 11th. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now."

i wore my mac and cheese dress just for that story. >> i see that. velveeta. i'll call you velveeta this morning. >> no. >> no.the coloof the dress will velveeta.lveeta. >> i'm just >> stop it. my goodness. happy friday, everybody. >> happy friday. we begin this half hour with the standoff over the government shutdown just one day away from becoming the longest in u.s. history. president trump took a trip to the southern border as he appeared to edge closer to declaring a national emergency to bypass congress and build his promised wall. meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of federal workers will not get a paycheck today. abc's matt gutman has more from texas. >> reporter: president trump traveling far from washington and those stalled shutdown talks, trying to drum up support for his wall by warning of a national security crisis at the border. >> if you don't have it, it's going to be nothing but hard work and grueling problems. and by the way, and death. and death. a lot of death. >> reporter: but we got a different story from the local mane the

president mentioned is that what was the murder rate in mcallen, texas in 2018? >> zero. >> zero. >> we had no murders. >> zero murders. >> we're the safest city in the state of texas. >> reporter: the mayor doesn't want a wall here. >> there's places a barricade makes sense. >> but not necessarily right here? >> not in the city. >> reporter: but the president is dug in. even before taking off he was sounding ready to declare a national emergency so he can go around congress and use the military to build his wall. >> i haven't done it yet. i may do it. if this doesn't work out, probably i will do it. i would almost say definitely. >> reporter: house speaker nancy pelosi pointing out even many republicans dislike that idea. >> i think he's going to have to answer to his own party on usurping that much power. i don't think he really wants a solution. i think he loves the distraction that this is from his other problems. and that's most unfortunate.

it's a luxury our country can't afford under any circumstance. >> reporter: the president long promised american taxpayers would not have to pay for the wall. >> who's going to pay for the wall? >> mexico! >> reporter: his campaign website even spelled out a plan to pressure mexico to "make a one-time payment of 5 to 10 billion dollars." a different story. >> when i said mexico will pay for the wall in front of thousands and thousands of people, obviously they're not going to write a check. but they are paying for the wall indirectly. >> reporter: that's not true either. the president is demanding $5.7 billion from congress for the wall and says he won't reopen the government until he gets it. reporters today asking if the buck stops with him. >> the buck stops with everybody. they could solve this problem in literally 15 minutes. >> reporter: and we've now learned that the white house has directed the army corps of engineers to examine its emergency supplementary budget to see if there's enough money in there for the military to

take over the construction of the wall and not require additional government funding. matt gutman, abc news, in mission, texas. the phrase that's getting a lot of attention today is "the buck stops with everyone." you don't typically if you're a politician say that. but we know president trump is a different type of politician. unfortunately, it is not payday for about 800,000 federal employees. today is the first missed paycheck since the shutdown started 21 days ago. >> workers across the country took to the streets to voice their frustration and anger over the impasse. now on the verge of entering its fourth week. more than half of those affected are still considered essential and are still expected to work -- to show up for work as they struggle to make ends meet. >> the bills keep coming. they don't stop. >> got rent due at the end of this month. i have bills i need to pay in the meantime. and i'm not able to collect a paycheck. >> and some families are worried about losing their home if parts of the government don't reopen soon. some agencies are offering tips

on how to get through the shutdown. it's almost unbelievable. suggesting people throw garage sales, babysit children, or walk the neighbor's dog for extra cash. breaking overnight, a shocking announcement from police in wisconsin. a teenage girl who hasn't been seen since october has been found alive. jayme closs disappeared after her parents were found shot to death in their home last october 15th. 87 days went by with no sign of closs, but last night police said she's alive and safe. >> they also said a suspect is now in custody but gave no other information about that person. we should learn more about what happened this morning when authorities hold a news conference. >> we will be staying tuned for that. it is a much different story in texas, where police believe a baby vanished after an apparent fake kidnapping. >> a week ago the father of 8-month-old king jay davila told police the little boy was abducted during a carjacking. now the father and two other relatives are under arrest in san antonio. police believe the child is dead.

here's abc's marcus moore. >> reporter: this is just a heartbreaking and really a bizarre case that we've been following here in san antonio, and san antonio police now saying that they believe that 8-month-old king jay davila is dead. the police chief also announcing that three of that little boy's relatives have been charged with tampering with evidence in connection with his disappearance. they include the boy's 34-year-old father, christopher davila, and his grandmother, 64-year-old beatrice sampaio, and a cousin angie torres, who's 45. police say each of these relatives worked together to put the boy somewhere where he could not be found. they also allegedly faked a kidnapping to cover up foul play. the police chief announcing these charges overnight and also talking about how difficult this is even for law enforcement. and what he had to say to people who potentially have information about this case. take a listen.

>> anyone who has information that your time is running out to come forward and talk to us if you have information about his whereabouts or what happened to him. and if you've already lied to us, then we're going to charge you too. >> reporter: we know that police do have a couple of areas where they are searching. but they wouldn't reveal publicly exactly where that is. and certainly investigators have a difficult road ahead of them as they try to answer the questions of why this happened. but more importantly, where is little 8-month-old king jay. kenneth, janai? >> our thanks to marcus there. president trump's former personal attorney and fixer michael cohen has a date with congress. he's scheduled to testify publicly before the house oversight committee february 7th. in march he starts a three-year sentence for lying about payments to cover up alleged affairs by the president. in a statement cohen called the capitol hill testimony part of his commitment to provide the american people with answers.

a family in south florida is demanding a police investigation after a tough takedown that was caught by their surveillance camera. sweetwater, florida cops are seen punching the brother of a man they were seeking. the suspect's mother's pushed away and the man is put in a choke hold. the officers were searching for a driver who had hit a cop, then fled the scene with two other men. police say the driver is also a registered sex offender. a major winter storm is brewing over the middle of the country that is packing enough ice and snow to create chaos for millions of americans all weekend long. >> something to look forward to. accuweather meteorologist melissa constanzer joins us with the details. good morning. >> reporter: janai, kenneth, rain to texas brings snow to missouri, illinois and indiana. it will be heavy snow for the afternoon hours into your saturday. some places like the gateway to the west picking up six to twelve inches of snow. but this storm isn't done yet. moves east into saturday night here creating some problems for

dramatic moments during a fire on florida's gulf coast. a sheriff's deputy rescued a bedridden 97-year-old woman after a fire broke out inside a port richie home. the deputy tried to put out the flames in the smoke-filled room, then he picked up the woman and carried her outside. both she and her 74-year-old daughter recovering in the hospital. incredible. and this is a snowy wind-swept road in wyoming. watch that oncoming tractor-trailer. ooh. it just gets blown right into a police cruiser that was stopped to assist another driver. the trooper was inside his vehicle with his seat belt on. thankfully he was not hurt.

>> that weather. well, quick and clear thinking by a mississippi police officer may have saved two teens' lives. the heart-stopping moments on dash cam show the teens walking toward the officer. when asked what he's holding, one pulls out a realistic-looking bb gun. >> the second teen does the same. but the officer doesn't fire. the teens were handcuffed, then released after their very grateful and upset parents arrived at the scene. the officer's name hasn't been released, but definitely kept his cool, calm. training kicked in there. because that could have went all the other way around. well, turning now to fresh backlash against singer r. kelly. lady gaga is the latest high-profile star to speak out, saying she's pulling the song they sang together that's been on streaming platforms. >> yeah, it comes as prosecutors say calls are pouring in from alleged victims of sexual misconduct. here's abc's linsey davis. >> reporter: a crowd at this

chicago club snapping pictures of a defiant r. kelly. his first public appearance since the firestorm over "surviving r. kelly," the lifetime documentary detailing accusations of sexual and other misconduct toward women and teenage girls. r. kelly has consistently denied the allegations. but fellow artist lady gaga is now apologizing for her poor judgment for collaborating with him on the 2013 song "do what you want with my body." ♪ do what i want, what i want with your body ♪ >> reporter: gaga saying "i stand behind these women one thousand percent, believe them, know they're suffering and in pain and feel strongly their voices should be heard and taken seriously." she's now planning to take the song down from streaming sites. and after an illinois prosecutor urged alleged victims to come forward two new accusers tell the "chicago sun-times" they've reached out to police. so have the parents of joycelyn savage, who believe kelly is holding their daughter against her will. with tmz last year.

and jayme is coming home to me. >> reporter: officials saying she was found in gordon, wisconsin, an hour from her hometown. and that a citizen phoned in the information. a suspect has been taken into custody, but police are not releasing any other details about the arrest or how jayme was located. however, a source telling our affiliate kstp that a woman walking her dog in a remote area was approached by a screaming teenage girl who said she needed help and identified the man in custody as having killed her parents. investigators believe the 13-year-old was kidnapped after her parents, james and denise closs, were found murdered in their wisconsin home october 15th. >> we believe jayme was in the home at the time of the homicides. we believe she is still in danger. >> she's got a group of five. >> reporter: the community came together in the days after her disappearance with thousands of volunteers joining the search. >> jayme closs is reportedly at a hospital. police hope to reunite her with her family sometime soon. they'll discuss the case at a news conference this morning. we'll be waiting to get more details. but there is sad news from

texas, where a baby missing in san antonio since last week is now believed to be dead. >> three family members including the boy's father face charges in the disappearance of 8-month-old king jay davila. police say christopher davila told them his boy was in a car that was stolen last friday. detectives now believe the father "severely injured the child." he and two other relatives are charged, accused of tampering with evidence. turning now to the growing outrage over the government shutdown stretching into day 21 with no paychecks going out to hundreds of thousands of workers. >> federal employees working without pay or not working at all staged demonstrations from coast to coast. some of them accusing president trump and congress of playing politics with their lives. abc's steve osunsami has the details. >> is working without pay okay? >> no! >> reporter: government workers across the country are taking their anger with washington to the streets. >> the bills keep coming. th>> rep these are people o are missing this week's

corps of engineer to examine its emergency supplementary budget to see if there's enough money in there for the military to build a wall and not need additional funding from the government. now, the president was briefed by the border patrol. i'm told that he was receptive to what they needed, which they say is a barrier along the entirety of this border. he visited this river. he did not actually see the places where that metal barrier is already constructed. now, we have spoken with the mayor of mcallen, texas very near to where we are, that's the major city here, and he told us that there is no security crisis here. >> what was the murder rate in mcallen, texas in 2018? >> zero. >> reporter: he also said that if they start building the barrier it will actually encourage migrants and asylum seekers to come here before it's completed. so that wave of humanity, of families and fathers and children and mothers and kids that we've been seeing, that is only going to increase during the construction of this barrier. he said his community does not want the barrier and does not need the barrier. the president not in agreement with that and didn't actually stop to talk with that mayor
