it's on the way. you have that to look forward to. good morning to you. it's friday, january 11th. you're never more than seven minutes away from your accuweather forecast. meteorologist mike nicco has a look head at the forecast. >> here's a look at the forecast. the storm is 1. expecting up to an inch of rain. both are mainly in the hills. much lower and slower as we head into where we live. there was fog during the overnight hours. the winds are starting to pick up. most of that is starting to dissipate. we're not going to have a repeat of yesterday. here's a look at the exploratorium. looks pretty nice from pier 15. mostly cloudy with a slight sprinkle. temperatures in the mid to upper 50s from noon with scattered shores to more widespread showers at 4:00 and 5:00. >> good morning, mike. very quiet. we have not had any incidents this morning. we're seeing some friday nig nig

volumes to go with it. this is the bay bridge toll plaza. not even a stackup on either side and no metering lights. it should happen closer to 5:30 this morning. a quick of drive times. the drive times are looking great. westbound side, highway 4 to the maze, 17 minutes. 9 minutes on the bay bridge. san francisco to sfo in the green at nine minutes. she loved being around everybody in the department. she just worked like you can't believe. >> breaking news, the davis police department is mourning the loss of a rookie police officer. 22-year-old natalie corona was killed while responding to a crash in downtown davis. >> this morning, we've learned that the suspect died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. abc news reporter amy is -- >> hi jessica. police are still here at the scene where the shooting

vith and c they tnk b til lsunris22-yr-d when she bere lt shis the to be killed in the line of duty since 1959. officers were involved with a standoff with the man who they believe killed her after searching door to door for him. they sent in a robot even used flash bang grenades, trying to get him coming out of the home where they believe he was hiding. at 1:30, police announced they found him inside dead by what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot. officers at the davis police department were conducting this investigation while also suffering from a huge loss. >> it's a small department. it's a family unit in a lot of ways. we're all pretty shocked.

i think everybody is holding it together trying to do their jobs professionally, but it's hard. >> reporter: this all started when police got a call of a three-car accident at d street in davis. corona responded alone to the call. police have not released any information about the suspect or his possible motive or why they think he is the person who did this, telling me this is all still under investigation. reporting live in davis, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. amy, thank you. officer natalie corona had only been on the streets for a couple of weeks in her officer capacity. the 22-year-old began her career at the davis police department in 2016. she was a community service officer back then. in july, she completed the sacramento police academy and according to the williams pioneer review, she was sworn in as a davis police officer august 2nd. she was following in the footsteps of her father who also

worked in law enforcement. that is him pinning a badge on her. just before christmas, officer corona finished the field training program. we've been updating this breaking news on our news app. you can get updates as they come in. new this morning, the u.s. military started withdrawing troops from syria. there are reports of a convoy of ten armored vehicles leaving syria and heading into iraq. a u.s. official confirms the equipment is now being pulled out of syria. but he did not provide information on when that would be completed. it was three weeks ago president trump said in a surprise announcement, 2,000 american troops would be leaving. today is supposed to be payday. hundreds of thousands oer ng without, instead. >> at this time tomorrow, we'll be in the longest government shutdown on record. reporter matt keller is live in mountain view. >> reporter: good morning, jessica. you got furloughed employees

here who will be joining other federal workers not receiving paychecks today. >> employees with the the environmental protection agency rallied outside the agency's region 9 headquarters in san francisco yesterday. they were joined by nasa and irs employees as well. they want to work, but the government shutdown has them sidelined. as many as 800,000 federal workers affected are expected to miss their first paycheck today. >> it means a lot that i'm not able to support my agency and our mission and help our state to implement the rules and regulations to help manage. financially, it also means that i'm struggling a lot right now. i'm not able to pay my rent. i'vead ask f an extension. >> epa employees say they've had two cleanups that were stopped because of the shutdown bringing potential risk to drinking water

for thousands of people. by tomorrow, the funding lapse will be the longest in history at 22 days. matt keller, abc 7 news. >> matt, thank you. according to governing magazine, more than 41,000 californians work for one of the closed federal departments and agencies and are currently either furloughed or working without pay. 800,000 federal employees are affected by the nationwide shutdown. there are 144,000 federal employees in california. governor newsom says any furloughed worker in california can get stay unemployment. >> the governor made the announcement as the outlines the budget yesterday. his $144 billion spending plan includes what would be the most generous paid parental leave policy in the nation. six months much partially paid leave for parents and caretakers of newborns or newly adopted babies. newsom wants to add, a drinking water tax as well to help poor communities cl contaminated water systems. here's a proposal. california drivers will hear

about this. the governor wants to start assessing credit cards. most is for health and though. >> 53%. when you add health and human services, add 28%. 81% of this budget is judge in those categories. the budget includes $500 million for cities to open navigation centers for homeless people. after negotiating with the legislature, newsom will revise the budget in may. got good news for most of us. the fog is start to go dissipate rather quickly. but the temperatures staying up. mid-40s to low 50s throughout the north bay. 50 in ukiah. 50 right now in petaluma, novato. 51 in american canyon. 50 in vallejo. the rest of us in the mid to upp upper 40s.

41 one of our cool spots in redwood city. 47 in newark. also in san jose. here's a look from our exploratorium camera. you can see how clear it is now. if you're going to be out and about or exercising, the rain is on the way. if you're south of the bay bridge, we have a small craft advisory for gusts up to 30. 25 to 30 knots out of the southeast. that means the dumbarton bridge, san mateo and bay bridge going to be a little tough for high-profile vehicles. in the east bay valleys, we'll be pretty quiet until noon. then you can see scattered showers becoming steady. scattered showers at 2:00, 4:00, becoming steady at 6:00 and 8:00. there's still a lingering amount of fog for you up until 8:00. not very thick, though. not very widespread. scattered shower on the peninsula. little drier at 10:00. scattered showers from noon to 2:00. steadier rain from 4:00 through 8:00. then the south bay, we're going to see the longest duration to get the rain or the longest amount of the time for it to

landed on time. the passengers were stuck on the tarmac for hours. some called 9-1-1. they said they were held against their will. others fainted from the heat on the plane. alameda county sheriff's deputies ended up arresting two men. >> he threatened that he was going to open the aircraft door and exit the aircraft on his own accord. >> nobody tried to open the door. the first guy that had gotten arrested was a certified rn who had went up to the front of the airplane and offered to help. the lady took it as a threat or something. >> what an ordeal. in a statement, aero mexico said they needed special permission to deplane because it doesn't normally staff at oakland airport. two did a. digs al suspects have been identified and scheduled to a appear in court. this attack happened in november. the victim, dan jansen is still

in the hospital not speaking and not able to recognize family members. 24-year-old jesse biere a was seeking bail. after reviewing the evidence, the judge in the case denied bail. a woman charged with felony child stealing after she was found with five teenage boys from sacramento. sheriff's deputies found the boys selling candy out of safeway in carmel on saturday. the teenagers said it was to raise money for a basketball team. the deputies say their stories didn't add up. they eventually told deputies they were brought there by a 37-year-old, michelle dorsey. officials don't know how she came into contact with them. authorities in wisconsin are expected to talk about how a missing 13-year-old girl was found alive. it is incredible. jayme closs disappeared in october. her parents shot and killed in their home in barron. jaymee was found 70 miles from home. the minneapolis star tribune said she ran up to a woman walking her dog and asked for

help. they took a suspect into custody shortly after the girl was found. a cruise ship forced to cut its trip short. why hundreds of passengers suddenly felt sick. >> a possible solution the question isn't whether he should be impeached any more. he's the most corrupt president in american history. and we all know it. the question now is, how fast can we move past this president so we can build a more just and prosperous future? please, join the more than 6.5 million americans who are demanding action now. because there's nothing more powerful than the unified voice of the american people.

>> it's hard to say. >> 2019 is wild. >> it's hard to say. oakland unified school district may potentially close up to 24 schools in the next five years. according to the east bay times, school district officials are working to identify which schools are on the chopping block. the district faces a $30 million budget shortfall. student enrollment has dropped in the past 15 years. district officials will discuss whether they will close schools at their meeting next month. in the south bay, san jose mayor sam liccardo announced his pick for vice mayor and it's councilman chappy jones. they have to elect him before it's official. he would replace the current vice mayor at the end of her two-year term. jones currently represents district 1 and serves on the santa clara valley transportation authority board of directors. learning isn't just for kids. happening today in santa clara county, new parents can learn how to better support young children. the resilient families education

program is aimed at parents and care-givers of kids age 3 and under. you can learn about the program and other resources available at two low dags indications today. the events run from 11:30 this morning until 1:30 this afternoon. first the giants ballpark was renamed from at&t to oracle park and now we're learning oracle arena in oakland will also get a new name. but we don't know the new name yet. the ceo, mark hurd, said the deal is with the warriors. but the team, as you know, is moving to chase center in san francisco. so the arena in oakland will be renamed once the nba season is over. the streaming competition is heating up. a movie and tv website owned by amazon has launched a free streaming video channel. it's called imbd free dive. customers can watch hit tv shows and movies without purchasing a subscription. i knew you would say there would be ads. no, no ads.

it is cloudy down there as it is everywhere. we're got scattered, isolated showers. scattered this afternoon, becoming steady, though, late into the afternoon and evening hours. random showers tomorrow. our driest day ahead. potentially stronger storms coming next week. couple of 2s on the storm impact scale. here's a look at today. mid to upper 50s in the north bay. upper 50s to low 60s and a good swath of wet weather in the mountains. unlike normal, it's mainly up in the north bay. here's a look at tonight. mid-40s to about 50 degrees. so let's drop in here at 7:00. you can see the random showers, especially across the north bay, near the coast up until noon. and then we've got that chance. you see the yellows and the oranges move into the santa cruz mountains and shift northward from 4:00 to 8:00. by 11:00 they're still around. wroefr overnight, there's no more yellow. just a few greens. as we head through the day, a

petaluma. castro valley to the maze 15. northbound 101, 280 to 680, 11 minute for you much. a record number of passengers are flying out of the charles m. schultz sonoma county airport. the business journal reports more than 440,000 passengers were served last year. that's an increase of nearly 11% over 2017. airplane officials say the new annual record was due to increased passenger service by alaska, american and united airlines. they say it looks like this year will be another banner year for the airport with a lot more people traveling. private bus company chariot is closing permanently. the san francisco-based company made the announced to shut down on their blog yesterday. ford motor company bought chariot in 2016 and expanded to multiple cities. it appears to be a money issue. the company is unable to make a profit without subsidies. the last day of it will be

the suspected gunman took his own life. reporter amy hollyfield is live. amy -- >> police have not briefed us yet on any details about that suspect. they're still investigating. they have a huge presence here at this scene. we're standing at 5th and c streets in davis. this is where the car accident and the shooting happened. police say they think they're going to be here a while, maybe a few more hours at least until sunrise. 22-year-old natalie corona was shot and killed last night when she responded to a car crash just before 7:00. she is the first davis officer to be killed in the line of duty since 1959. they're saying that she responded alone to this car crash. they all just figured it was routine at the time. officers were involved with a standoff with the man who they believe killed her. they searched door to door for him. then they zeroed in on the one home not far away from the car

accuweather forecast. >> mainly from 43 to 49 degrees. san bruno milder at 54 degrees. let's see if anybody else tops that? no. we got 52 in fairfield andd. a lot of us in the mid to upper 40s this morning. here's a look at san mateo. this time yesterday, we could barely see the bridge because of the fog. not the case today. you'll have gusty winds coming at you from the san mateo bridge and the dumbarton bridge. we also have commute that will be wet during the afternoon hours. that's what most of this caution is for is the wetness out there except for the winds also if you're going to be out on the bay. >> let's look at the east bay. we're pretty quiet. there's a random shower possible, 8:00 to noon. temperatures start to get near 60 at 2:00. we have scatteed showers, steadier starting at 4:00 through 8:00 as we drop down into the upper 50s this evening. north bay, random shower through 8:00. scattered showers from 10:00 to noon to 2:00. then becoming steadier thiseven.

eratures actually cooling from t down to the low 50s. here's a look at san francisco where we try to get away with just a sprinkle or two at 8:00 and 10:00. scattered showers at noon. light rain at 2:00. you can see that steadier rain from 4:00 on with temperatures in the upper 50s. if you have plans this weekend, i'm going to find you a window of dry weather because it's hard to find in the accuweather seven-day forecast. how about finding easy commutes this morning? >> yeah. no trouble with that. i'm having more problems finding something to tell you about. it's just wide open. we're friday light. we have not had any significant incidents so far today. hoping we can hold on to that, of course. we have a minor issue past 66th avenue. i believe this is a disabled vehicle that is partially blocking the left lane. no delays approaching that scene. i will keep an eye on that. that's pretty much it on the boards right now. it's really quiet. here's the richmond side of the richmond-san rafael bridge. a few folks wait to go pay cash.
