father's footsteps. he pinned her badge on in the swearing in ceremony a few months ago. >> she was responding it a car crash near the uc davis campus. let's begin with abc 7 news anchor eric thomas. eric? >> reporter: you mentioned natalie's father, a 26-year veteran of the colusa county sheriff's office. he did pin the badge on to her. you should know that we've seen a steady stream of people come by to drop off flowers and food to pick up american flags, to pay their respects to this fallen officer who had only been on the job for a few weeks. shortly after 22-year-old officer natalie corona was murdered, police tracked the alleged shooter to this house. when he didn't answer calls to come out, s.w.a.t. teams went in. >> the suspect was ultimately located inside the house.

he was deceased from what is apparently a gunshot. self-inflicted gunshot wound. >> natalie corona was a rookie. graduating back in july. last night she was responding to a call about a three-car accident when the shooter walked up and opened fire. corona died later at uc davis medical center. marianne brought flowers in her memory. she also heard the shooting at an event just three blocks away. >> we were told to stay inside. that there was an active shooter. so it was truly frightening. >> reporter: all day long, a steady stream of people came by the police department to drop off flowers or food in her memory. these two women are taking the killing especially hard. they used to work with natalie at the colusa casino while she waited for admission to the police academy. >> she was so excited to start the academy. she was excited to get out there and start doing her job.

>> the small department with just 61 sworn officers is grieving. the flag outside at half-staff and officers wearing the familiar black band on their badges that we see every time time there's a fatal police shoe shooting. >> i think the officers remain extremely professional in light of the circumstances last night. they did an outstanding job and i think they'll continue to do so. ♪ ♪ >> reporter: to show you how much the college town has rallied around the davis police

department. this gentleman showed up spontaneously with his back pipes and began playing amazing grace next to the flagpole where it's flying at half-staff. much more on this case and the grieving going on around here coming up in a report at 6:00. live at the davis police department, eric thomas, abc 7 news. a lot of grief. eric, thank you. the other part of the story is how davis has responded to this tragedy. the community has seen only eight murders since 2002. the infrequency makes each one notable. >> reporter wayne freedman joining us live in downtown davis. wayne, what are people telling you there? they have to be in shock. >> reporter: well, they're very upset because this is a close-knit community. davis is a relatively small city, but it's large if you consider all the people who passed through here while going to school. look at it that way, there's a lot of sadness extending beyond the borders of this city.

college towns are supposed to be fun towns. by that measure, davis felt out of character today with police tape, a crime scene and a loss. >> i was just thinking about how we're starting the year off with a death. >> emily with the flags and the banner. one tribute among many 22-year-o 22-year-old police officer natalie corona. they have not lost an officer since 1959 making this a first for everyone. >> it's hard. we're a small department. this isn't common for us. everybody knows everybody. it's tough. >> flowers and notes of condolences began arriving early. a city with fewer than 70,000 people. amber wilson brought her 2-year-old son hoping he might remember and wishing he would never need to. >> he's here.

he sees we're doing but i don't think he really understands what's going on. you know, the magnitude of the situation. >> one magnified by closeness and less than 3 degrees of separation. >> i think it hit me especially hard because she just is so young. she was two weeks on the job. she was just doing her job. and someone came up and shot her. >> two weeks for a 22-year-old. that's younger than some of the college kids who call davis home. the flags were free today but they came with a high price. >> reporter: to quote one resident from this morning, a man named matt. he says give everybody a hug and try to get back to normal life. that's not going to be easy in a city and in a country where violent crime has become an unpredictable certainty. in davis, wayne freedman, abc 7 news. >> wayne, thank you. we have created this badge that you can sharon line as a way to remember officer corona.

the easiest way to get it is through the abc 7 news facebook page. in just a matter of hours, the government shutdown will become the longest in u.s. history. it is now day 21, matching the longest previous stoppage in late 1995 and early 1996. that means an estimated 800,000 federal workers did not get paid today for the first time since the shutdown began. they're not happy about it. the air traffic controllers association filed a lawsuit becoming the third federal employees union to take the trump administration to court over the shutdown. at the white house, president trump backed away from this threat to declare a national emergency in order to fund the border wall. federal workers did receive a pay stub today. but it looked like this. nothing but zeros. in one bit of good news, the house overwhelmingly passed legislation today to grant back pay to federal workers. mr. trump says he will sign it. some federal workers are taking to craigslist now to supplement their income.

really sad. a u.s. coast guard employee on furlough and selling their horse trailer to pay the bills. offering it at a $3,000 price tag or loss i should say. in san francisco, the seller says this couch is a government shutdown special. hoping to move the vintage furniture for under $400. tsa agents and air traffic controllers are among the federal workers as you heard on the job without pay. abc 7 news reporter chris nguyen looks at how their actions could impact your travel plans. >> as travelers arrived at bay area airports this afternoon, many wondered how much of an impact the government shutdown would have on them. >> rather just be in there sitting down and relaxing versus worrying about trying to get into the security check. >> fremont resident debra maxfield arrived at mineta san jose international airport about 2.5 hours before her domestic flight. >> i didn't know what to expect. >> so far, no major delays at tsa security checkpoints in san

jose. same for oakland and san francisco where tsa screeners are being paid under a private contract. mineta san jose spokesperson rosemary barnes says passengers should still build in extra time to be safe. >> we have air traffic controllers here. we have tsa screeners. we have our customs officials. they're continuing to show up. they're continuing to do the job to support our travelers. >> nationally, however, there are concerns as to whether or not tsa employees who are currently working without pay may start calling out sick. officials at miami international had to close down a terminal today because of a staffing shortage. >> you can only give so much of yourself before you feel that burnout, especially without pay living in such an expensive area like silicon valley. local air traffic controllers we spoke with say the longer the shutdown, the more like i the public will start to be problems. >> working with a glorified skeleton crew. couldn't be more proud of them.

the people who steal packages typically from outside the front door. take a look at this. this is surveillance video showing the person dressed up as a ups driver boldly stealing all of the packages in a san francisco building. abc 7 news anchor dion lim has more on the story only on abc 7 news. take a look at this graphic showing the number of stolen amazon packages across the country. san francisco is number one. and when it comes to these crimes, thieves are getting more creative. >> he comes right in with an empty bag and picks up the small ones, puts them in his satchel and stacks my package and carries them out. >> this woman had her eye on a

one of a kind vintage rug for months. when she finally ordered it, it never arrived. >> i was tracking it online from work. i saw it around 3:00 p.m. on a workday that it had been delivered. when i got home, i came into the lobby and there are no packages there. >> hannah and others in her building were victims of this brazen theft during the holidays. caught on camera and obtained weeks later. >> i was so shocked. i was devastated. >> it left hannah wondering, how could this have happened? either a seasonal or full-time employee who went rogue or someone who obtained a ups uniform. whatever the case, it doesn't look good. hannah filed a police report and reached out to ups. they immediately responded to her and sent abc 7 news a statement saying in part that they're investigating to find the person responsible. until then, hannah knows the odds of getting her rug back are slim to none. but hopes her story serves as an important lesson for others. >> the big take away for me is,

day. >> felix says the only thing he could think about was his 10-year-old daughter. he's been spending a lot of time giving her hugs. now your accuweather forecast with sandhya patel. >> it's pretty slippery outsid because of the showers. let's get to live doppler 7 right now. our radar is going to show you exactly where it is raining. as you will notice right around inverness, point reyes station, we're seeing the steadiest showers. heading into san rafael, fairfax. getting you down to street level around san anselmo, ross, it is slippery. around napa, solano avenue into yontville, it is wet across the silverado trail. we go towards union city area and tennyson road is slippery as well. castro valley across 580. one more stop into martinez. benicia, watch out.

those showers continue to pass through the region. looking at the santa cruz mountains, they've been seeing rain as well. so far the highest rain totals are about a third to half an inch. most areas seen a few hundredths of an inch. it's splitting into -- most of the energy into southern california. not expecting a whole lot out of it. it's producing showers here, clouds up in tahoe. it's a beautiful view. they'll be getting snow towards next week and it could be significant. let's take a look at the travel forecast. tomorrow morning, if you're flying out, bay area airports, few sprinkles, otherwise sunshine. winds out of the southeast, 5 to 15 miles per hour. 58 to 60 degrees. now, in case you're going to honolulu, look at how nice it will be. warm and 83 degrees. new york city, snow showers. chicago, you're looking at snow. 33 degrees. los angeles showers. 62 degrees. temperatures right now in the 40s and the 50s here in the bay area. clouds have been gathering and we've been seeing some showers. emeryville camera showing you a

peek of sun. our next storm arrives sunday afternoon/evening and stronger storms will follow next week. current system is a level 1 on the storm impact scale. light to moderate showers. highest totals along the coast. we're expecting light winds. here's a look at the hour-by-hour forecast. 6:00 p.m., pockets of moderate showers. it's not widespread activity. keep the umbrella handy. 7:00 p.m. tonight, you'll notice the showers still going through. 9:00 p.m. moving across the bay area and very few showers for the wee hours of saturday morning before the system winds down. the rest of your saturday is dry and then another storm comes in sunday afternoon/evening. additional rainfall totals, anywhere from a couple of hundredths of an inch to half an inch in places like san francisco. here's a look at your 1-hour planner for -- 12-hour planner for saturday. temperatures mainly 40s. peeks of sun at noontime. and the sunsets at 5:11. it's going to be dry tomorrow afternoon, evening for any outdoor plans. you can download the accuweather app and track live doppler 7 or
