officers, police corporal was shot just hours after christmas. >> and last night 22-year-old davis police officer natalie corona was killed while responding to a car accident. she had been patrolling on her own for just two weeks. the shooting happened in downtown davis on fifth and c streets a few blocks from the uc davis campus. >> we have team coverage to cover this tragedy, the police department and the city of davis this self. let's begin with eric thomas. eric? >> indeed the police department and community around rit are grieving tonight. the police department says there will be another briefing on exactly what happened coming up in a half hour. they haven't released much information today but we know what we know is heartwrenching. >> i think we're all devastated. >> it's the day after rookie officer natalie corona was murdered, apparently ambushed while investigating a three car descent on the streets of davis last night. flags are at half-staff. ♪

>> a bagpiper came to pay his respects. and her colleagues are hurting. >> it's a small department. you know, we all know each other. and it's very hurtful thung. >> the gunman apparently walked up while corona was handling the call and opened fire. she was later pronounced dead at uc davis medical center. police later tracked the suspect to this house. police tried tooax him into coming out when he didn't, swat went in. >> the suspect was ultimately located inside the house and he was deceased from what is apparently awe gunshot, self unflikted gunshot wound. >> it's a small department with just 61 sworn officers. corona joined the force after working with these women in the casino and they're taking her loss hard. >> she lit up a room. she was an angel sent down.

i never met anybody like that. i don't know that i ever will again. >> this woman brought her 10-year-old son and class plates by police headquarters to drop off flowers and pay respects. >> seeing the soft serve telling our enabled, even though we never spoke to her, it was just very sad for us. >> but it also shows just how much local support their local police. >> i'm glad that they were there then and that they're here in davis and doing a good job at keeping people safe. >> what you're seeing right now is what we've been seeing all day long. citizens stopping by to pay their respects in addition to police officers from other departments stopping by to pay theirs as well and, of course, a lot of them wearing black bands over their badges in honor of this young police officer who had so much life ahead of her at age 22. but that life has been snuffed

out. in davis, eric thomas, abc 7 news. >> the other part of the story is how davis responded. the police department has in the lost an officer since 1959. and the city itself has seen only eight murders since 2002. >> we have a story how the entire community has been impacted. wayne? >> they are all talking about it in davis today. it's on everyone's mind. this is a small city. it is really a large city if you consider all the people who lived here while they were going to school and then moved away. and that way this murder has a wide-ranging impact. >> in davis, they gave away flags today. the flags came at a high cost. >> while i was drawing this i was just thinking about how we're starting the year off with a debt. >> college towns are supposed to be fun towns. by that measure, davis was out of character after the shooting death of 22-year-old police

surpassed its goal. raising more than $17,000 in just a few days. te 32-year-old was parked at uc berkeley sunday when that tree came down. winds from last weekend's rain storm helped topple the otherwise healthy 250 foot tree. mourners gathered today for a prayer service for the 17-year-old high school football player who was found shot and killed monday night. abc 7 news reporter attended the service which was overflowing with friends and relatives. >> so many mourners wanted to pay respects that many had to pray outdoors during rain showers. they were family, friends, classmates of 17-year-old a far varsity quarterback. he was found det dead shot wubs on the grounds of the elementary school. what led to his death is tudents say it has been difficult processing the crime. >> it's quiet in the hall ways and a lot of people are just really reflecting and thinking about the value of life and every single day that we have now that, you know, there's an

empty seat in all of his classes. >> one classmate brought along painting she did to honor him. others wore pins with his football jersey number 11. he coached him for three years. >> mo worked extremely hard to earn his starting spot. he was a key piece to our championship run for the season. >> a lot of the teammates looked up to him. saw him as one of the leaders. off to the side. >> this is going to be a big loss for you. >> definitely. he was like a brother to me. >> the love so many have for him makes it difficult for all who gathered to imagine why minute would want to harm him. five detectives are working the case along with help from other agencies. no suspects have been arrested. > >> we know that the shooting did occur in the location where the victim was found. built as f but as far as the exact circumstances weesh circumstances, we're conducting an investigation and looking at all possibilities. >> this is a close family friend.

>> the white house indicates that president is likely to sign the measure passed by the house and senate that provides back pay to federal workers once the government reopens. but the other bills that were passed by the house today that would open various agencies, that's still not being considered by the senate. abc news, washington. zblfr the lack of a paycheck is hitting home for hundreds of coast guard families in the east bay and other furloughed federal workers as local businesses kick into gear to help them out. abc 7 news reporter leslie brinkly is live at one of the businesses. leslie? >> hi. rockwall wine company here has big bins inside where people are bringing by pet food, canned goods, diapers, all kinds of personal care products to help out coast guard families. it may be tuesday is pay day. they know they won't be getting checks at this point. meanwhile, local food banks are standing by ready to serve. have you heard from furloughed workers? >> we have heard from furloughed

workers, probably counterintuitive as we've had furloughed workers actually volunteering here and helping us. >> they didn't want to go on camera. but the community food bank is encouraging federal workers who aren't getting paychecks to contact them. >> just a very uneasy feeling not knowing are my kids going have food on the table. am i going to have my bills paid? are people going to understand, like, why we can't pay things? >> danielle manner's husband has been in the coast guard for 12 years and they have three sons including 4-year-old twins. luckily she's mobilizing with the east bay spouses club as they frantically collect and sort donated goods. >> you must be in shock. >> yeah. i definitely didn't think that it would ultimately come down to. this i think it's the reality of it is definitely setting in >> the club president says many military families live paycheck to paycheck and this new stress is overwhelming with spouses often gone for months at a time. the spouses club is running

shuttles from these four businesses. the local, the friends of alameda animal shelter and the brewing company and the rockwall wine company where there are collection bins. by sunday, all of the donated goods will be lined up so that 200 families can come to the coast guard ymca to select what they need. >> the person that is our president saying that he can relate to this, he can't relate to this. he can't relate to not having a paycheck when you need to buy your kids food or diapers. so we're all sort of trying to ban together and make sure the people that serve our community are being served. >> a similar coast guard collection drive is underway now up in the north bay, the distribution is set for sunday in nevada. and again a sunday distribution here in alameda. leslie brinkly, abc 7 news. >> leslie, thank you. so let's take a look at the results from our poll from abc 7

we call it building a better bay area. >> tonight 7 on your side is taking a closer look at the embarcadero and the challenges facing the water front. >> this is a story of urban planning and change and how the best laid plans can be way late by changing times. the embarcadero is a busy place filled with people, cars, and all sorts of transportation devices. it can feel dangerous walking here. it can feel dangerous riding in the bike lane. >> it's fairly chaotic. >> that is sort of san francisco executive director elaine ford.. let's start with this stretch of concrete. it is probably not what you think it is. >> it's not a squawk. it looks like one. it is a prominad. >> that's an important distinction. squawks like this one on market street are for pedestrians only. the prominad invites cyclists, scooters, skate boards, you name it to come onboard.

there are signs letting everyone know the prominad is not just for pedestrians. >> is that a good idea? >> i think it's best if you just have beds. there's a bike path right there. electronic vehicles should not be operated on the prominad. that's my opinion. here's another. >> you figure out how to walk. you see people coming and going. you quick get off the street. >> helping to sort all this out is a senior plan we are the san francisco municipal transportation agency. indicationy hilton. >> the issues that we are currently grappling with, they're not issues we thought we would be grappling with when we started this project. >> four years ago the port and various city departments started working on a plan only to be upset when uber andpassengers. new vehicle types took to the prominad and visits to the waterfro waterfront exploded to 24 million a year. >> any kind of vehicle goes slow enough to keep our pedestrians

safe. >> she is talking about the program n prominad and embarcadero itself. traffic will be slow but hustle through. expect fewer left turns, fewer lanes and parking, that is oh, so four years ago. >> i think it's fair to say that personal storage and private vehicles along the water front is not the highest priority for our project. >> everyone is very careful when talking about this project. bicyclists are powerful. so are walkers and motorists. >> the prominad is a shared use path. cyclists are allowed legally. what we want to do is invite them into this new facility which will be a two-way, you know, water side bikeway. >> are they being invited or forced? >> you know, i this i the question we're focused on again is the design. we are working as a partner with the port and so the discussions are around policy are things that will have to materialize

over the nefrment several years. >> so that still has to be developed. >> yes. >> joining me now is san francisco supervisor. he represents district 6 which includes south beach and the large swath of the project. three days in office. happy to be here. >> yeah. thanks for having me. >> what a difference a couple years makes. completely different down there. >> yeah. well, it's a bit different from wh when it was a freeway. we have ubers and lyfts and scooters and people riding bikes. so it's time to think about how we can make some more coherence so that's a safe place, a welcoming place for everybody however they travel to spend time there. >> it was interesting. as you walked into this studio, with you are going through your phone messages. and you received a question from a constituent which was, can they still comment on this? >> of course they can still comment. they can let me know directly what they think.

also the planning department is still taking comments on this. and there will be a number of times in which people can see the design, the different prototypes and can give feedback as the process goes on. >> can you safely put all of these people together on that? on that concrete ribbon? can you put motorized vehicles? >> well, i think we can do better than what we're doing. right now we have a large sidewalk where everybody is on there. sometimes bikes are on there. in part because the bike lane is not protected. it can be dangerous. there was a cab driver who tragically lost his life when hit by a car. we need a protected bike lane. we need to make sure the larger area for pedestrians and other activities, benches, et cetera, you know, is more built out and effective for that purpose. >> it is interesting. when you're there, you see most people acting well. just like in most places. then you have a couple maniacs running around. does it need enforcement or is that too much? does that take the fun away?

>> it's a little butt it of san francisco. there is a lot of jogging. it's a beautiful place. people want to be there. touristsen want to be. there but of course we have to make sure it's a safe place that, there are ambassadors, community ambassadors out there to keep everyone safe, public safety and all of that. it should be a welcoming place for everybody. i actually think in some ways it's underutilized. i think why aren't people here all the snim why don't we have activities here at night? more events. things that wlcome people in. many is lighting and public safety and making sure the streets work for everybody. >> is that part of a plan to make it more welcoming or more used? >> definitely. i think some is thinking about the benches and kind of layout for other types of activities and events and gatherings. we have the space for that in different parts. but the first thing has to be to keep everybody safe. and if it feels like a free for all or if you step out you don't know what type of vehicle is going to be coming at you, not

thieves are getting more creative. >> he comes rooigt in wiight in empty bag and takes a small one and carries them out. >> this resident had her eye on this one of a kind vintage rug for months. but when she finally pulled the trigger and ordered it, it never arrived. >> i was tracking it online from work. i saw around 3:00 p.m. on a workday that it had been delivered. when i got home, i came into the lobby and there were no packages there. >> hannah and others in her building were victims of this brazen theft during the holidays. caught on camera and obtained weeks later. >> i was just like devastated. this person did not here i'm sure they've done it in different buildings around san francisco. >> it left her wondering -- >> who knows the person was. >> whether it was a seasonal or full time employee who went rogue or it is someone who somehow obtained a ups uniform. whatever the case, it doesn't look good. hannah did file a police report

and reached out to ups. they immediately responded to her and sent abc 7 news a statement saying in part that they're investigating to find the person responsible. until then, hannah knows the odds of getting her rug back are slim to none. but hopes her story serves as an important lesson for others. >> the big take away from me is be careful when you're letting strangers into your building. >> one way to prevent this crime is asking whoever is at the door for first and last name of the package recipient. ups tells me they have many security measures in place but we're choosing not to share them not to tip off the thieves. abc 7 news. >> we have breaking news now. a report involving the 22-year-old davis police officer who was shot and killed in the line of duty. within just the past few minutes, uc davis police gave us a lot more information about the gunman including he arrived at the scene on the bicycle and unloaded his weapon, shot and killed the officer then reloaded his gun and started shooting again.
