live where you live, this is "abc7 news." >> shot her once, and she went down to the ground, and he then ended up shooting her multiple times. >> tonight, we are learning new chilling details about the moments leading up to the shooting death of a davis police officer. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm ama daetz. >> i'm larry beil. 22-year-old officer natalie corona was responding to a traffic accident when authorities say she was ambushed by a gunman. >> it happened on 5th and c streets just a few blocks from the uc davis campus. cornell bernard is in davis tonight with what we've learned about the shooting. cornell? >> reporter: yeah, the moments leading up to officer corona's death are very troubling, ama.

the memorial continues to grow here across the street on 5th street where the shooting happened. tonight, we still don't know the gunman's name or his knowtimmm o the police chief sharing new details about the murder of the police officer. she was responding to a traffic collision on 5th street when witnesses say a man rode up on a bicycle and started shooting. >> the suspect just opened up fire, shot her once, and she went down to the ground, and he then ended up shooting her multiple times. >> reporter: he says the gunman had two semiautomatic times. he reloaded several times, then took aim at a fireman responding to the scene. >> at that point, one of the firefighters got out, started to run. the suspect shot towards the firefighter. one round hit him in the boot. he was not injured. >> we heard all the initial

gunfire. there was two rounds of ten each, maybe 15 total. >> reporter: bullets hit a passing bus and a backpack of a student walking nearby. police say the gunman walked back to his house a block away. >> at one point he did come out. it appeared to the officers that he was wearing a ballistic vest. >> reporter: the suspect would later take his own life inside the home. natalie's father is a retired veteran of the sheriff's department. he was proud of his daughter swhoshgs had just graduated from the police academy last summer. he says even as a rookie, she knew the risks of the job. >> she died doing what she loved to dowa. sha ility. i think she embraced that. ♪ >> reporter: a bagpipe played "amazing grace" outside of the police department where there's a growing sea of candles and

cards to honor her, who was considered a rising star with the force. >> such a pure heart and soul. she was taken way too soon. >> reporter: remarkably, the father says he's not angry at the gunman for taking his daughter's wife. a candlelight vigil is planned tomorrow night to honor the officer. cornell bernard, "abc7 news." >> cornell, thank you. poor woman had no chance. we created this badge that you can share online as a way to remember her. the easiest way to get it is through the "abc7 news" facebook page. breaking news from the east bay where two people have been killed after a honda suv slammed into a tree in antioch just after 9:00 tonight near hillcrest avenue. erwas six people in the car,that all of them juveniles. four others were also hurt, two victims suffered major injuries

and were flown to the medical center. officers are investigating whether the slick sleets played any role in the crash since it was raining. >> we are expecting a whole week of wet weather. >> here's a live look across the bay area. you can see wet roads and clouds. sandhya patel joins us now. >> reporter: let's take a look at live doppler 7. we are still seeing wet roadways out there. let me get you into street level radar where it's slippery. simpson beachheading into fairfax road, you'll notice light returns. san francisco, down into the bay view district, south san francisco, pacifica, burling game, very light stuff. in the east bay, around alameda harbor, you take a look at the santa cruz mountains, they've been getting some good rain there. this shows you why we're not seeing a lot of rain. this is sheering apart and moves

into southern california. we're left with light to moderate showers. highest totals in the breezy in spots. another batch of showers moving through at 2:00, 3:00 a.m. in the morning. then we have another storm coming for weekend and a few more next week. i'll be back to time it out coming up. larry? >> thank ou, sandhya. the rainy weather is having a big impact as sfo. hundreds of flights have been delayed and 17 canceled. >> you can track the rain with the "abc7 news" app. we have live doppler 7 on the app. enable push alerts to get weather advisories on your phone or tablet. crews are working to repair a sinkhole that opened up around 5:00 tonight. two lanes are shut down. we're told they'll likely stay closed at least into next week. it is official. the ongoing government shutdown is now the longest in u.s. history. we are now entering day 22 of

the shutdown. surpassing the previous stoppage in late 1995 that went into '96. for the first time sense the shutdown began, an estimated 800,000 federal workers did not get paid today, including air traffic controllers, whose own union filed suit against the trump administration, becoming the third federal employee union to do so. tonight, no signs of an end to the shutdown, no negotiations scheduled. those unpaid workers were issued paychecks, but nothing but 0s. the house did pass legislation to give back pay to the workers. president trump said he would sign it. the lack of pay has been a jarring experience for those federal workers. but bay area community members are stepping up to help. >> reporter: the smell of fresh chinese foo into the wonderful restaurant. now there's a new sign at the door to welcome people, too.

>> we heard about customers coming in. just talking to us about how the shutdown would impact them. we really -- it hit close to home. >> reporter: until the government shutdown is over, they are offering 50% off meals to any federal worker who isn't getting paid. wonderful is located an exit up from sfo where air traffic controllers have already missed a paycheck. employees have known that this lack of payday was coming, but some have been inspired to make extra money using something that is right outside their door. >> yeah, they've got to do something. it's sad they're not getting paid, so they drive for uber or lyft and make some money. >> reporter: orlando has been driving for uber for three years and admits doing it on top of a fulltime job could be tough. the east sselub organized this goods collection in alameda to help 200 families. >> i didn't think that it would ultimately come down to this. i think it's the reality of it

is definitely setting in. >> reporter: a reality that one can oy he wot mh loer. announced she'll donate her salary in duration for the shutdown. >> tonight, we have an update on the story of a danville couple who recorded a dog walker abusing their dog. they hired him using an app called wag. that man was arrested and charged with animal cruelty. katie utehs has more on what people can do to protect their pets. >> reporter: the city of san jose animal care center has this advice for new pet parents. >> do your due diligence, because if you hire a dog walking company, you're not hiring the company, but an independent contractor who works for the company. >> reporter: which is what a

danville couple learned the hard way. security cameras captured a dog walker kicking their beloved dog, ollie. >> right behind that came this anger. >> reporter: miranda hired the man through a dog walking app called wag. police arrested him for animal cruelty. the professionals at the shelter say you have to vet each dog walker individually. ask for references. just because they work for a company does not mean they're licensed. if you work a lot and know you won't be able to walk your own dog, take that into consideration when adopting. shelters post the energy level and strength of the dogs. >> it's unfortunate if you're going to rescue dogs that you understand the type of dog that you're getting and the responsibility. >> reporter: wag called the attack unacceptable and have deactivated him from their platform. katie utehs, "abc7 news."

a small wisconsin county is breathing a sigh of relief tonight. 13-year-old jayme coss is safe after being abducted three months ago. her alleged kidnapper, also accused of murdering the girl's parents, is in custody. the county sheriff said that she's the real hero in her own dramatic rescue. maggie rulli has the latest.

>> reporter: janeane nutter was the first person to see jayme closs alive in 88 days. >> she was crying, and said, i need help. i don't know where i am. i'm lost. >> reporter: she was out walking her dog when she says a thin, cold looking girl came running up to her for help. >> kept saying, don't worry, everything is going to be okay. >> reporter: they raced to a nearby home and called 911, kating 20 minutes for police to get there. >> she opened the door and the dog ruff dog runs into the kitchen. she says, this is jayme closs, call 911. >> reporter: police arrested 21-year-old jake thomas patterson. police say she escaped when she was not home. >> the suspect had specific intentions to kidnap jayme. >> reporter: authorities believe on october 15th, patterson used a shotgun to blow through the

front door of the home, shooting and killing both of her parents before kidnapping the young girl. yet they have not found any significant connections or answers as to why. >> nothing in this case shows the suspect knew anyone at the closs home or at any time had contact with anyone in the family. >> reporter: once on the run, patterson changed his appearance frequently and shaved his head. he'll make his first court appearance on monday where he'll be charged on two counts of homicide and one count kidnapping. as for jayme, she's since been reunited with her aunt. maggie rulli, abc news, new york. a spike in boat thefts has the sheriff asking residents to be vigilant. thieves are stripping boats of engines and speakers before abandoning them. some tips for securing boats, use a chain, install surveillance equipment and

removalables before docking. >> if you have big plans, i hope they're indoors. >> a lot of rain coming our way. >> the silver lining, if you will, we'll get our rain, but the entire weekend is not a washout. let's take a look at live doppler 7. this is what it looks like right now, and the showers are tapering but steady in the santa cruz mountains. we get you into street level radar, san francisco across daley city, brisbane, heading into south san francisco, fulton street, the mission area around the marina. it is slippery out there. rainfall totals, most ofou under a quarter of an inch. there have been a few wet spots. over a quarter of an inch in san francisco. kent field, almost half an inch. santa rosa, 0.4 of an inch so far. we didn't expect this to be a big storm and it's not turning out to be a big one for us. temperatures, 40s, 50s, a live look from our camera.

it's a lovely view as we look towards the bay bridge there. scattered showers into the early morgue hour morning hours. current system is a level one on our storm impact scale. highest in the hills in the north bay and breezy at times. so let me time this out. while many of you are hopefully sleeing, seeing just spotty showers in the wee hours of saturday morning. by 7:00 a.m., you're left with just clouds, maybe a few patches of fog going into 8:00 a.m., then we're done. the rest of your saturday, all the way through sunday morning is dry. by 3:00 p.m. sunday afternoon, the next round comes in. this is another similar system going into southern california. so just look for bands of showers sunday amp, sunday evening going into monday morning's commute. light to moderate in intensity. in terms of rainfall potential, here's what you're looking at. a lot like today, you'll see about a tenth to half an inch of

rain. next week, what to expect. stronger storms come in, road and creek flooding, between tuesday and thursday not out of the question. possible landslides and rises on our main stem river. so keep that in mind. sierra will get a boost in the snow, as well. take a look at the projections. this is next week. all that snow is going to add up. 46 inches at kirkwood. 40 at donner. 26 at south lake tahoe. temperatures first thing in the morning, 40s, 50s. make sure you have your shades in the afternoon. a mix of sun and clouds. numbers in the 50s and 60s. download the accuweather app and track those temperatures any time you want. you can also track live doppler 7. accuweather seven-day forecast. some early morning drops, just isolated. and dry for all of saturday afternoon into sunday morning. sunday afternoon through monday is a light level one system, a lot like what's coming through
