it's saturday, january 12th. good morning and thanks for being with us. i'm chris nguyen. let's start with a first look at the forecast. here is meteorologist lisa argen tracking live doppler 7 for us. hi, lisa. >> hi, chris. we had a few showers earlier and now it's more like fog in our valleys. you'll notice just a little bit of green there representing really just a lot of cloud cover. temperatures are in the upper 40s to low 50s. we do have fog in our valleys, but you're looking at blue sky here from the golden gate bridge. so we do have the fog with 40s and 50s. then by noon time partly cloudy, mid and upper 50s and that sun setting at 5:11. dry throughout the afternoon. clouds will increase overnight leading to our next chance of rain, which is a 1 on our storm impact scale. i'll track it for you in a few

minutes. chris. >> lisa, thank you. developing news in the east bay. two teenagers are dead and four others hurt after a honda suv slammed into a tree in antioch. it happened just after 9:00 last night on lone tree way near hillcrest avenue. these images show just how violent the crash was. fire officials say the four victims who survived were taken to the hospital with moderate to critical injuries. investigators say it appears excess i've speeding on the wet roadway is the most likely cause of the crash. we're learning chilling details about the moments leading up to the shooting death of a davis police officer. 22-year-old natalie corona was responding to a traffic accident thursday night when authorities say a gunman ambushed her. the shooting happened in downtown davis on fifth and c streets just a few blocks away from uc davis. cornell bernard has the details. > this clearly to us looks like an ambush. >> reporter: the police chief sharing new details about the

murder of police officer natalie corona. shon a b and started shooting. >> the suspect basically just opened up fire, shot her once, and she went down to the ground. he then ended up shooting her multiple times. >> reporter: he says the gunman had two semiautomatic pistols. he reloaded several times, shooting randomly in different directions. then took aim at a fireman responding to the scene. >> at that point one of the firefighters inside started to -- he got out, started to run. the suspect shot towards the firefighter. one round hit him in the boot. he was not injured. >> we heard all the initial gunfires. there were like two rounds of them, of like 10 each, maybe 15 total. >> reporter: bullets also hit a passing bus and also hit the backpack of a student walking by.e searched for the gunman who they say had walked back to his house a block away.

police ordered him to surrender. >> at one point he did come out. it appeared to the officers that he was wearing a ballistic vest. >> reporter: the suspect would later take his own life inside the home. >> we're going to grieve. >> reporter: natalie's father is a retired veteran of the sheriff's department. he was proud of his daughter who had just graduated from the police academy last summer. he said even as a rookie, she knew the risks of the job. >> she died doing what she loved to do. she knew that was a possibility, and i think she embraced that. >> reporter: a bagpiper played "amazing grace" outside of the police department where there's now a growing sea of flowers, candles and cards to honor officer corona, considered a rising star with the force. >> such a pure heart and soul. she was definitely taken away too soon. >> reporter: remarkably officerg his daughter's life. a candlelight vigil is planned

in davis saturday evening. cornell bernard, abc 7 news. recruits who graduated with officer corona from the sacramento police academy last year said their friend was determined to go into law enforcement. when she ran into obstacles during the rigorous 24-week academy, friends say corona persevered. >> she could cry and she wasn't embarrassed to do so. she showed many times disappointment in herself because she wanted to be at a better place. she always pushed and she always worked so hard to get there, and she did. >> latosha kelvin described her friend as beautiful, brave and strong. we created this badge that you can share online as a way to remember the fallen officer. the easiest way to get it is through the abc 7 news facebook page. time now is 8:04.

happening today the public is invited to a memorial in san francisco for former kgo radio host ray taliaferro. the commonwealth club will host honor. speakers include his sons, former mayor willie brown and fellow kgo talk show host ron owens. he was found dead in kentucky last month. police say they do not suspect foul play. the memorial starts at 11:00 this morning at the club office on the embarcadero. happening now, crews are working to repair a sinkhole that opened up on montague expressway. this was in milpitas around 5:00 last night. two westbound lanes are shut down between oakland road and expedition lane. we've been told they'll likely stay shut down until early next week. it's official, the ongoing government shutdown is now the longest in u.s. history. we're now entering day 22 of the shutdown. that surpasses the previous stoppage in late 1995 into 1996. for the first time since the shutdown began, an estimated 800,000 federal workers did not get paid.

that includes air traffic controllers whose unions filed suit against the trump administration. they're the third employee union to do so. there are no signs of an end to the shutdown. no negotiations are currently scheduled. those 800,000 unpaid federal workers were issued paychecks, but take a look, nothing but zeros. the house did pass legislation to give back pay to those federal workers. president trump said he would sign it. now, the lack of pay has been a jarring experience for federal workers, but bay area community members are stepping up to help. here's the story. >> reporter: the smell of fresh chinese food greets you as soon as you step into millbrae's wonderful restaurant. now there's a new sign at the door to welcome people too. >> we heard about customers coming in just talking to us about how the shutdown would impact them. it hit close to home. >> reporter: until the

government shutdown is or, wonderful is offering 50% off meals to any federal worker who isn't getting paid. wonderful is located an exit up from sfo where air traffic controllers have already missed a paycheck. federal employees have known that this lack of payday was coming, but some here at the ait make extra money using something that is right outside their door. >> i mean they have got to do something. it's sad they're not getting paid so they drive for uber, drive for lyft and make some money. >> reporter: orlando has been driving for uber for three years and admits doing it on top of a full-time job could be tough. coast guard families won't get paychecks tuesday. the east bay spouses club organized this goods collection in alameda to help 200 families. >> i definitely didn't think it would ultimately come down to this. the reality is setting in. >> reporter: a reality that one can only hope won't last much longer.

teachers in oakland will rally today in solidarity with los angeles teachers who are planning to strike on monday. the l.a. teachers union rejected an offer from the school district that would have added 1200 more teachers and reduced class sizes by two students. teachers say it's unacceptable because they also want higher wages and class sizes to be much smaller. today oakland teachers will show their support and call for more funding for the state's public school system. the rally starts at noon. abc 7 news is committed to building a better bay area, which means we're spending more time looking at issues, including the historical teachers shortage in the bay area. all next week we explore all the challenges our local teachers face and search for solutions. watch abc 7 news building a better bay area teacher crisis starting monday. happening today, crews in the south bay will move a historic house to make room for a new building on the san jose state university campus. the school uses the house as offices for student government. crews are moving it about a mile

the company says it needs to part ways with some talented and hard-working members of the team. spacex has two ambitious plans that are estimated to cost up to $10 billion each. the "l.a. times" reports the laid-off employees will be offered eight weeks pay and help with finding new jobs. now to some video you'll a it shows a man in a u.p.s. outfit taking packages instead of dropping them off. he cleaned out everything sitting in the lobby of in san francisco building. dion lim decided to investigate. >> reporter: take a look at this graphic showing the number of stolen amazon packages across the country. san francisco is number one. when it comes to these crimes, thieves are getting more creative. >> he comes in with an empty bag and he picks up the small ones, puts them in his satchel, and then stacks my package and just carries them out. >> reporter: hannah had her eye on this one-of-a-kind vintage rug for months. when she finally pulled the

trigger and ordered it, it never arrived. >> i was tracking it online from work. i saw around 3:00 p.m. on a work day that it had been delivered. when i got home, i came into the lobby and there are no packages there. >> reporter: hannah and others in her building were victims of this brazen theft during the holidays. caught on camera and obtained weeks later. >> i was just like devastated. franciildis >> reporter: it left hannah wondering -- >> who knows who the person actually was. >> reporter: either it was a seasonal or full-time employee who went rogue, or it's someone who somehow obtained a u.p.s. uniform. whatever the case, it doesn't look good. hannah did file a police report and reached out to u.p.s. they immediately responded and sent abc 7 news a statement saying in part that they're investigating to find the person responsible. until then, hannah knows the odds of getting her rug back are slim to none but hopes her story serves as an important lesson for others.

>> the big takeaway for me is be careful when you're letting strangers into your building. >> reporter: one way to prevent this kind of crime is asking whoever is at the door for the first and last name of the package recipient. u.p.s. has many security measures in place but chooses not to share them so as not to tip off the thieves. i'm dion lim, abc 7 news. now to an update on a story of a danville couple who recorded ac dog walker abusing their dog. they hired him using an app called wag. the man was arrested and charged with one count of animal cruelly. here's more on what you can do to protect your pets. >> reporter: the city of san jose animal care center has this advice for new pet parents. >> do your due diligence, because if you hire a dog walking company, you're really not hiring the company, you're hiring an independent contractor who works for the company. >> reporter: which is what a danville couple learned the hard way.

security cameras captured a dog walker kicking their beloved dog ollie. >> right behind that came this enormous amount of anger. how could you do that. >> reporter: miranda hired the man through the dog walking app wag. it's been called the uber of dog walking. police arrested the man for animal cruelty. the professionals at the shelter say you have to vet each dog walker individually. ask for references. just because they work for a company does not mean they're licensed. >> if you work a lot and know you won't be able to walk your own dog, take that into consideration when adopting. shelters post the energy level and strength of the dogs so you know what you're getting into. >> i think it's important if you're going to rescue dogs that you understand the type of dog that you're getting and the responsibility that comes with it. >> reporter: wag called the attack unacceptable and said they deactivated the man from their platform.

good morning to you. saturday morning some rain showers offshore, but for once live doppler 7 on the quiet side. we're looking at the activity from the central coast down through southern california. also snow in the mountains and a series of storms in the pacific stacking up to bring us a pretty wet week ahead. as we look outside, it looks pretty nice with partly cloudy skies from our east bay, 52 san francisco, it is 50 in san jose, 48 in half moon bay, emeryville partly cloudy skies, 48 in santa rosa with some fog. there's also fog in our inland east bay with upper 40s from petaluma to livermore. just over a mile visibility in livermore and a quarter of a mile in santa rosa. our exploratorium camera looks pretty good for a january afternoon. partly cloudy, next system arriving tomorrow afternoon taking us through monday night. stronger systems tuesday, wednesday and thursday, likely seeing some flooding with those systems.

highs today in the upper 50s to near 60 in oakland with a few clouds around. should be a pretty nice afternoon to get out there and clean up or even get some sun. we're going to take you through where we are so far for the season. anywhere from 51% of normal in mountain view to 83% in santa rosa. certainly stacking up much better and we'll likely be over 100% after next week. the mountains, 90% of average in the northern sierra and that is about where we are statewide, so doing pretty good there as well. we'll have the snow with the first system and then likely warmer systems after that. the next system is a 1 on our storm impact scale tomorrow afternoon into monday. showers from a tenth of an inch to three-quarters of an inch with breezy winds. we're starting this at 2:00 tomorrow. you can see a few showers out there. by 6:30 they become a little more developed around the entire bay area from the north bay to the south bay. through the overnight hours

looking at more rain. then into your early monday morning commute, looks like slick roadways, breezy conditions. this is the monday afternoon commute that looks a little worse than the morning one. it finally winds down by about 11:00 and rainfall totals look like this. about three-quarters of an inch to an inch up in the north bay. not really buying that inch in san jose. more like 0.2 to 0.3 around the east bay. we do have a beach hazard statement going into effect tomorrow from 9:00 in the morning to 3:00 in the afternoon with sneaker waves a possibility. partly cloudy skies today, heavier rain, gusty winds tuesday, wednesday, thursday. a good idea if you haven't already to download the accuweather app because these systems just kind of once they get going, it's going to stay wet throughout the middle of the week. it will be a good, handy device to help you throughout the week. >> you can follow along with live doppler 7. lisa, thank you.

the program started earlier this week and focuses on end of line stations in richmond and antioch. changes are coming to the embarcadero seen here from drone view 7. it's one of san francisco's highlights. but there are challenges facing the waterfront. michael finney explains how the plan has changed with changing times. >> the embarcadero is a busy place filled with people, cars and all sorts of transportation devices. it can feel dangerous walking here. it can feel dangerous riding in the bike lane. >> it's fairly chaotic right now. >> reporter: that's port of san francisco executive director elaine forts. let's start with this stretch of concrete. it is probably not what you think it is. >> it's not a sidewalk. it does look like one, but it's a promenade. >> that's an important distinction. sidewalks like this one on market street are for pedestrians only. the promenade invites cyclists, scooters, skateboards, electric

vehicles, you name it, to come on board. there are signs letting everyone know the promenade is not just for pedestrians. is that a good idea? >> i think it's best if you just have pedestrians because there's a bike path right there. electric vehicles shouldn't be operating on the promenade is my opinion. >> and here's another. >> you just figure out how to walk. you see people coming and going. it's like crossing the street. you deal with people. >> helping to sort all this out is senior planner with the san francisco municipal transportation agency, casey hildreth. >> the issues that we're currently grappling with are not necessarily issues we thought we'd be grappling with when we started this project. >> about four years ago the port and various city departments started working on a plan only to be upset when uber and lyft started dropping off passengers. new vehicle types took to the promenade and visits to the waterfront exploded to the now 24 million a year. >> our interest is that any kind

of vehicle goes slow enough to keep our pedestrians safe. >> she's talking about the promenade and the embarcadero itself. it's been decided that traffic will be slow, but still hustled through with synchronized lights. expect fewer left turns, fewer lanes, and parking, that is, oh, so four years ago. >> i think it's fair to say that personal storage of a private vehicles along the waterfront is not the highest priority for our project. >> everyone is very careful when talking about this project. bicyclists are powerful. so are walkers and motorists. >> the promenade is a shared use path, and so cyclists are lgally allowed. what we want to do is invite them into this new facility, which would be a two-way waterside bikeway. >> are they being invited or forced? >> i think the question we're focused on again is the design. we are working as a partner with the port. and so the discussions around

her home where her parents were both brutally murdered. >>days. >> reporter: 70 miles from where she first disappre stumbling upon jeannie nutter thursday. >> she was crying and said i need help, i don't know where i am, i'm lost. please help me. and she said i'm jayme. then i'm this close to her so i knew it was jayme. >> reporter: jayme appearing disheveled, thin, with no coat. >> she had somebody else's shoes on that were too big for her. she was just wearing like black sweats or leggings and then a baggy sweatshirt and that was it. >> reporter: nutter, rushing to a neighbor's house to call 911. >> it was like seeing a ghost. i mean it took my breath away, you know. i'm still -- it's kind of hard for me to wrap my mind around it. >> reporter: closs described her kidnapper and his car. minutes later officers taking this man, jake patterson, in custody.

an unemployed 21-year-old with no criminal record. >> the suspect taking great efforts to minimize his forensic footprint at the crime scene, like shaving his head not to leave hair behind. >> reporter: investigators think patterson first shot jayme's parents at their home in the middle of the night last october, then kidnapped her. her disappearance sparking wall-to-wall coverage, a major manhunt and thousands of leads. now jayme is safe at home with family and a furry friend. >> this is her dog, molly. yep. she's going to be so excited to see her. >> and that was alex perez reporting. authorities believe the suspect was trying to find jayme when he was apprehended. he is now facing murder and kidnapping charges. he's due in court on monday. now to president trump and the fbi. "the new york times" reports the bureau opened up an inquiry about whether the president was secretly working on behalf of russia. abc news white house correspondent tara palmieri has

the latest. >> reporter: the fbi opened a counterintelligence investigation into the president of the united states to see if he was a national security threat working on behalf of the russians against american interests. now, according to this report, the fbi was unsure if the president was even knowingly acting on behalf of the russians. at the time former fbi director james comey was overseeing fbi's investigation into campaign collusion. special counsel robert mueller has since taken over that case, but in addition he's been investigating whether the president obstructed justice by firing comey to end the investigation. but this new report suggests that the fbi was concerned that the president fired comey on behalf of the russians. just days after the firing, trump referred to comey as a nut job in a private meeting with the russian foreign minister, sergey lavrov, in the oval office. he also added that firing him would relieve pressure from the white house. the president has just responded in a tweet to all of this saying, wow, just learned in the

failing "new york times" the corrupt former leaders of the fbi almost all fired or forced to leave the agency for some bad reasons opened up an investigation on me for no reason and with no proof after i fired lying james comey, a total sleaze. so as you can see, the president is fired up this morning about this new report. i'm sure we'll hear a lot more about that from him. happening now, the government shutdown has entered day 22. it's now the longest closure in u.s. history. the previous record happened during bill clinton's presidency. that one lasted from mid-december 1995 through early january 1996. president trump and congress continue to dispute funding for a wall at the southern border. nearly 800,000 federal workers are impacted. many of them missed their first paychecks since the shutdown began. the democratic presidential candidate field may grow today. former san antonio mayor julian

castro will announce his decision about a possible run for the 2020 presidency this morning. castro previously served as u.s. secretary of housing and urban development under president obama. he was mayor of san antonio from 2009 to 2014. the youngest mayor of a top 50 american city. all eyes are on the democratic party ahead of the 2020 primary season. dozens could be in the running. massachusetts senator elizabeth warren has already announced her intention to run. many are still waiting on former vice president joe biden's decision. for now all signs point to senator kamala harris launching a formal campaign this month. east bay congressman eric swalwell is also considering running for president. 8:35 is our time. the hit musical "hamilton" started a two-week run in puerto rico. lin-manuel miranda is reprising his lead role. tickets range from $10 to $5,000 apiece artists and cultural groups struggling.

"hamilton" will return to san francisco's orpheum theatre from february to september. happening today, hours are changing at 1 branches of the san francisco public library. a study showed that patrons wanted more time on the weekends. that led to increased hours at a dozen branches, including sunset, richmond, potrero, bernal heights and the main library. the library system hopes more people can take advantage of its resources and materials. however, the library users association is upset because the changes reduce evening hours, which is what was requested the most. still ahead on "abc 7 mornings," flying versus driving. which one may be the best bet the next time you take off to tahoe? as we head to break, here's a live look outside from san jose. you can see the clouds out there on this saturday morning, the sun trying to peek through. lisa argen will have your full forecast
