>> jobina fortson joins us with a look at the >> reporter: things are just getting started here at central park in davis. more than a thousand people were expected tonight. by looking around i can already tell you that the crowd surpassed that number. take a look around here, you can see people gathering candles, filling the outskirts of the park to honor officer corona and her family. several members of the davis police department are here. we learned the vigil was organized by a community member. many spent time hanging blue ribbons, gathering candles around the park for the event. the mood is somber. the officer and her family and davis pd are top of mind, not overshadowed from news out of the sheriff's office today. as you mentioned, they identified the shooter as kevin douglas limbaugh.

he was on a bicycle when he shot her from the shadows as she was working a traffic incident. police say he reloaded, barely missed hurting others, and calmly walked home. in the last 30 minutes, we received new information from police. they released a letter they say limbaugh left after killing officer corona and himself. a portion reads, quote, the davis police department has been hitting me with sonic waves meant to keep dogs from barking. you should be able to see the rest of the letter on your screen there. there are several people slated to speak tonight, and we will bring you another report on abc 7 news at 11:00. live in davis, jobina fortson, abc 7 news. >> appreciate that. thank you. meantime, that death is two weeks after newman corporal that was lined down after pulling over a suspected drunk driver the day ar christmas.

>> natalie corona is the first california peace officer to die in the line of duty in the new year. police officer deaths are on the rise, according to the national law enforcement officers memorial fund. 144 officers died in the line of duty in 2018, a 12% increase from 2017. a third of those the result of a firearm. new at 6, the santa rosa diocese released the name of priests and deek ons church leaders say committed sexual abuse against children or accused of doing so. at least 23 of those are deceased. as for the rest, none are serving in public ministry. the current bishop says about 100 children believed to have been victimized since the diocese was founded in 1962. the i-team investigated several priests named today. dan noyes reports, in 1995,

misconduct led to a prison sentence. he is named in the list. so is peter keegan who dan followed to mexico where he was found working at an orphanage. according to the diocese, he and two others are responsible for abusing 63 of 100 young victims. another name on the list of is a radio host part of the diocese from 1978 to 1979. a victim accused him of abuse in 2008. after an investigation a decade ago, ward was sentenced to federal prison for possession of child pornography. he has since been released. in the north bay, a tense police standoff is finally over after a suspect refused to surrender. >> police say he tried to burn down a convenience store with gasoline and a lighter and all of it was caught on tape.

>> reporter cornell barnard has this bizarre story. >> reporter: the 40-year-old suspect juan roman surrendered six hours after stopping at this safeway gas station. they followed him from the circle k store where he argued with the assistant manager. >> i said you have to prepay gas money. he was so angry, he go outside, take a gas can from his pickup truck, came inside the store, poured gas all over the store. >> reporter: police say it was caught on the security camera. he walks through the aisles, dousing the floor with gasoline as he calls 911. he leaves but returns with a piece of paper and lighter. he lights the paper on fire and tosses it on the gas soaked floor. >> what did you do when you saw him light the piece of paper? >> i was so scared, i just don't want to go close to him. i want to stay away. >> reporter: luckily there was no fire, the gas didn't ignite.

the suspect took off, police followed him to the safeway where he refused to surrender. >> the negotiators used deescalation techniques, formed some trust, were able to talk about what's going on with him. >> reporter: police say roman was having family troubles and agreed to surrender after asking police for a cigarette. instead, they gave him a vape pen to smoke. they didn't find a weapon in his truck. he is relieved there was no fire, and nobody was hurt. >> thank god i survived today. >> reporter: roman is charged with attempted arson and vandalism. today, the assistant manager's last day on the job after 15 years there. he is glad today ended the way it did. cornell barnard, abc 7 news. nine people suffered symptoms of carbon monoxide

poisoning in this san francisco apartment building. residents felt sick and dizzy. two were treated at the hospital and released. fire crews stressed the importance of having carbon monoxide detectors. we're in day 22 of the federal government shutdown. it is the longest stoppage in american history. federal workers, many of whom are going unpaid rallied around the country, calling for an end to the shutdown, but that seems unlikely with no negotiations scheduled to bring the stoppage to an end. president trump tweeted he won't budge on his demand for a border wall. the government shutdown has effected dogs and their owners who frequent popular dog park in san francisco. sf dog, a nonprofit organization, promoting recreation opportunities for responsible dog owners asked golden gate national recreation area to keep it open. they agreed as long as they removed trash and cleaned the port a potties. >> we were able to make it in, had to park on the side on the

shoulder of the highway, and all the cars even on weekends was crazy. people were fighting and it was tough with all of the traffic and cars driving by. >> sf dog is raising money to help with the reported maintenance cost of more than $1500 a week until the shutdown ends. >> judging by that video, what a difference a day makes. gray skies turned blue. this is a live look outside. you can make out some of the cloud cover out there. but a break in rain won't last long. >> our meteorologist is standing by with when it is expected to hit. >> easy for you to say. >> we're enjoying a temporary lull in rain. we have some sunshine today, which is nice, and we're tracking the next storm. live doppler with satellite, next storm off the coastline, moves on shore tomorrow. the bulk of energy goes into southern california. for us in the bay area, it is a light system.

screaming back and forth. it was heaven. >> the 79-year-old was found dead in kentucky last month. they do not suspect foul play. abc 7 news was in the south bay as crews moved an historic house to make room for a new building on the campus. they use that house as offices for student government. crews are moving it about a mile to a new location next to the business tower. the process could take up to 8 hours. a couple of streets in the area are closed until 8:00 tonight to accommodate that move. missing doctor appointments can lead to early death, especially if you have chronic conditions, according to a study by university of lancaster and university of glasgow. they tracked appointments for three years between 2013 and 2016. then compared them to patient medical history and death records. the key is missing more than two appointments per year. people with long term physical

wet weather expected to drop a significant amount of rain across southern california, sparking mud slide concerns. >> several burn areas around los angeles are closed as a precaution. there's concerns of flooding and mud slides with destroyed vegetation from the wildfires. malibu was impacted by rain last week, mud slides shot down pacific coast highway and it took days to clean up mess. highway 23 is closed mu mulholland highway. accuweather, in the heart of

overnight, with a lot of cloud cover overhead, it keeps us on the mild side. temperatures can be gradual to fall in the 40s the next 12 hours. could see a little patchy fog in north bay valleys. we bring back storm impact scale. it is a level one system for the next round of showers, light in nature, really light winds, really low rainfall totals. less than a quarter inch. sunday morning, i expect dry conditions, mixture of sunshine and cloud cover to begin the day. similar story through the early afternoon. it is likely close to sunset. 5:00, 6:00 sunday. some light showers move through. we'll be tracking light scattered showers to end the day sunday night as well. total rainfall with the next system, low totals like i said, less than a quarter inch where we see the rainfall, i think there will be some cities that don't see a shower out of the next storm system. the bulk of moisture with this
