>> and aye dion lim. a look at the white house as the shutdown continues. president trump is continuing to say he may still declare a national emergency, bypassing congress to fund a border wall. >> the president tweeting i'm in the white house waiting. the democrats are everywhere but washington. as people await their pay, they're having fun and not even talking. democrats say trump is not being flexible, and declaring a national emergency is an overreach of power. >> for military families here in the bay area, things are getting scary and serious, without a paycheck as the shutdown drags on. >> today coast guard personnel and their families were treated to a much needed food giveaway thanks to a generous community that is stepping up to help. >> cornell bernard joins us. nice to see the turnout today. >> yeah, it really was, dion. really a big helping hand for those struggling coast guard families today. we saw nonstop deliveries of food donations here in novato. and in the east bay, there was a

giveaway for coast guard members needing a little help. >> cleaning supplies. i've got perishable items such as food, butter. >> coast guard member bryan de la reyes got all these groceries and didn't have to pay a dime. >> i'm not used to asking for help. and having this kind of help, i'm very grateful for it. >> the partial government shutdown taking its toll for coast guard mechanic kyle turcotte. >> it's worrisome because i have to put food in my family's belly. >> hundreds of coast guard personnel lined up in alameda for the food and supply giveaway. most of these military folks are still working without apa>>ne i still have rent, car payment. >> janet's husband is active duty, and she's got a family to feed. >> today saved us quite a bit of money, not having to go to the grocery store this week, and that's huge. >> the giveaway made possible by

donations collected by the east bay coast guard spouses club. organizers know the experience is humbling for those who serve our country. >> we tell them just come, take exactly what you need and do not feel bad. we do need this. it is a time when we actually need this. we need the help. >> it is very overwhelming. >> absolutely. >> in novato, an amazing donation drive was unfolding for north bay coast guard members. car after car of food and supplies. diane lopez is doing her part. >> these people are our neighbors, and they don't have any paychecks. it just breaks my heart. >> check out what was collected in less than three hours. enough food to fill this entire room. >> we're so excited that we get to turn around and pass this out to all these deserving families. a resounding thank you to everyone in this community. >> the supplies will be given to coast guard families next saturday here in novato. all that's required is a military id.

more than 600 people showed up for that giveaway in alameda today. 168 of them are families. all of them hoping the government shutdown comes to an end soon. in novato, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. >> those numbers really show the need. thank you. >> along with volunteer, several businesses and banks even are helping furloughed workers. we do have a list of how you can get in and help, if you need help as well on abc7news.com. switching gears now to talk about the weather. more rain is on the way. just not quite yet. >> to talk about the timing, abc 7 news meteorologist drew tuma joining us right now. >> our next storm system is slowly marching our way. our earlier thought was that we would have some showers later on this evening. but it look like those showers may hold off until early tomorrow morning. live doppler 7. you can see some light returns off the coastline right now. we'll widen out the picture and show you this front that is slowly moving our way. but as it does, you notice we lose a lot of that moisture. so it's a weak storm headed our

direction, and it's likely still several hours away from making its presence known. your 12-hour planner overnight early on, we're expecting a dry evening over the next hours. after midnight, an isolated sprinkle pops up by 4:00. a better chance of shower as the morning commute gets under way tomorrow morning. on the storm impact scale, a light system working threw on monday with scattered showers and light winds. rainfall likely less than a half an inch the next 24 hours. but behind the storm system we have a pair of stronger storms moving in for the week ahead. we're going to detail the entire timeline. and the accuweather forecast when i see you in a few minutes. with the storm coming, caltrans will close part of highway 1 near big sur as a precaution. it includes the area shut by this mudslide nearly two years ago. it took nearly two months to reopen. right now caltrans will close highway 1 between paul's slide

and mud creek at noon tomorrow. caltrans will have geologists and other experts in the area to determine when it will be safe to reopen that stretch of highway one. we're learning new details about the 22-year-old davis police officer gunned down in the line of duty thursday. officer natalie corona was the subject of a department facebook post back in december. the post says that officer corona was called out to the new home of a person who had lost everything in the camp fire. a week later officer corona returned to the home with what you see there, a gift of items the fire victims needed. now since her death, davis' chief has called corona a rising star in their department. today a police sergeant in alabama was killed and another critically hurt in a shooting that shooting happened as two officers questioned people suspected of breaking into cars. two people are in custody. six officers have now died so far in 2019, three of them from gunfire. a highway patrol officer is recovering tonight after getting hurt when a truck knocked him

off his motorcycle on the bay bridge. abc 7 news was in san francisco after the officer's damaged motorcycle was towed to the chp's office on eighth street. investigators tell us the officer followed a slow disabled vehicle, and that's hen the truck veered in the westbound lanes west of treasure island. the officer escaped with minor injuries. an explosion rattled people living and working in san francisco. abc 7 news was in soma after a blast shattered windows on taber place near second street. police detained a man near the scene just before 10:00 this evening. one man said another explosion rocked that neighborhood on thursday night, and he has noticed trouble near his home. >> not good. we're getting a lot more homeless problems down here now. so i don't know if they're doing or some kid messing around. >> nobody was hurt. police have not revealed if that explosion is linked to damage at a nearby bus shelter. our local teachers face many

a gate on the bay bridge is broken this evening after somebody ran through it. it happened just before 10:30 this morning. according to the oakland chp, a vehicle ran through the gate of lane four when it was closed and broke the gate arm. that person took off and could face a hit-and-run charge. nobody was hurt. the 44th annual winter fancy

food show took over the moscone center today. new companies showcased what they had to offer, while established companies tested out brand-new flavors. each year the hottest food trends are all kinds of dishes are featured at the largest food and beverage show on the west coast. this year vegan dishes are more popular than ever, which have a lot of plant-based foods. we're seeing things like tuna fish with actual vegetables instead of actual tuna in it. we're seeing mushroom jerkies, a lot of african flavors in food. something for everybody. >> i'm impressed with some of these recipes. they're really good. now celebrities including n'sync's lance bass were there along with professional eater joey chestnut. unfortunately, only food maone p at rkers are allowed to this year's super bowl halftime show. the nfl made the announcement today, though the band had been

today, kids got to witness a dream come true. a minister city made of legos. >> check it out. abcnews was in palo alto for the 15th annual holiday lego show. for just three bucks, kids and adults got to see an entire world built out of the classic toy. it's held at the museum of american heritage each year. this year's exhibit was vintage toys: it's child's play. bay lug spent countless hours creating it, then they break it all down again when the event is over. >> it's the love of lego.

you can take it apart. you can put it back together in different ways. whether you're putting it up or taking it down, sharing the joy is what it's about. >> well, the displays are different every year. one of the biggest features every year was a lego amusement park with moving roller coasters. >> now your accuweather forecast with drew tuma. >> accuweather manages to squeak out a pretty dry weekend across the bay area. but tomorrow showers return, and then the week ahead we're tracking a pair of stronger storms that will soak the region. so our storms are still opening that door wide across the region for the next seven days. our storm doors can be very active. live doppler 7 showing you the sweep across the region. showers offshore that will move onshore overnight tonight. tonight the picture, a beautiful one. sutro tower, calm conditions right now. across the region we have mainly cloudy skies. and the clouds will soon give way to showers across the bay area. so the storm impact scale, we'll use this on your monday.

it's a light level 1 system that will move onshore tomorrow. light showers, rainfall less than a half of an inch across the region. and as this front moves through, the rains remain pretty light. easterly wind 10 to 25 miles per hour. you need the rain gear as you step out the door tomorrow morning. live doppler 7, along with the wider view showing you that thin ribbon of moisture offshore. the weak ripple of energy behind it. you can see the spin right there. it is slowly marching towards us. we thought we would get some showers later on tonight. but it looks like the timing has slowed down, and we'll find the light showers moving onshore tomorrow morning. ahead of the storm, it's pretty mild out this evening. temperatures holding in the 50s. right now 51 in is an rom. 56 in san francisco. 57 in san jose. napa with a temperature of 51 degrees. overnight tonight we hang on to the cloud cover. temperatures very slow to fall with that cloud cover overhead. over the next 12 hours, we'll drop into the 40 across the

board with a light sprinkle showing up after midnight. let's go hour-by-hour. plan out your monday. we'll stop the clock at 9:00 a.m. monday morning. kind of the tale end of the monday morning commute. we're just beginning to see some light showers make their presence known. i think the best bet comes midday into the afternoon. to find that wet weather by 2:00 on monday, we're tracking the scattered showers, and the threat will continue even by 6:00, 7:00 as well. total rainfall with this system on the light side, as you would expect with a level 1 storm system. rain potential where we find the showers pop up across the board, less than a half of an inch. most cities away from the coast. we'll find less than a quarter inch through our monday. highs on your monday, limited sunshine. we'll track those on and off showers. you won't need the umbrella the entire day. where we do find a shower pop up, you'll need it for five minutes or so. the week ahead we're tracking

stronger storms, and i really want to highlight the time frame between wednesday night and thursday morning, because what we're watching, there is the risk that we could see some very heavy rain move through the evening. not only some heavy rain, but some very strong potentially damaging winds in excess of 40 miles per hour. the threat is there midweek. we could see some more downed trees and flooding is possible. as we get close, we're going to fine-tune the forecast that looks to be the strongest storm we have over the next seven days. the accuweather forecast, scattered showers tomorrow. downpours with the stronger system on tuesday. we're watching wednesday night into thursday morning. we may have to up those numbers on the storm impact scale as we fine-tune it. but otherwise dryer skies prevail to end the week. now abc 7 sports with mindi bach. >> to borrow from mark twain, reports of tom brady and the patriots' demise have been greatly exaggerated. plenty of people thought the chargers would not the patriots out of the play-offs, and plenty of people were wrong.

brady thrives when he is dutied. philip rivers and the chargers had very few highlights, but here is one. this game was tied at 7. but then the patriots took over. brady to julian edelman. the redwood city native is second to all-time in postseason receptions. you need just 57 more to catch jerry rice. the rookie sony michel also excelled. he had two scores in just the first quarter. second quarter, more patriots. brady to phillip dorsett. 15 yards for the easy fix. three patriots possessions. three touchdowns. let's make it four possessions, four touchdowns. rex burkhead from six yards out. the chargers understandably frustrated. michel ended up with three touchdowns and 105 yards rushing in just the first half. the patriots are up at 28 at the half. they cruise to a 48-41 win. the chiefs are favored over new england in the championship game. the eagles looking for a little more nick foles magic against the saints. in the first quarter, they found

quarterbacked oklahoma to the college football play-off and picked up a heisman trophy along the way. espn is reporting executives from major league baseball are also taking part in those meetings. some project murray to go in the first round of the nfl draft where he would make millions more than his minor league deal with oakland. well, the warriors are clicking right now. they made 59% of their shots in east of the last games, and they're going to take that role on the road where they play seven of their next eight, starting with the mavericks. in dallas, some interesting pregame rituals that is for sure. earlier kevin durant blocks the three and takes it all the other way for the great slam. durant had 17 in the first half. steph curry was on fire in this one. he had 16 in the first quarter and 24 at the break with five three-pointers. the mavs are playing well in large part because of rookie luka doncic. the warriors know a thing about a comeback.
