we're hearing from the tsa this morning. they say due to staffing issues associated with the government shutdown, they were forced to close it. over the weekend, a similar sight at miami international airport as those sick-outs increase nationwide. now, flights are still taking off from terminal "b." but if you're flying out, you have to give yourself extra time because you'll have to go through other security checkpoints. the key word is patience. for more, let's go to david kerley at reagan national airport. good morning, david. >> reporter: good morning, victor. these checkpoints are the spot that most average americans are going to feel the impacts of this shutdown, especially in the coming days. the call-out rate yesterday was nearly 8%. that's more than double what it was a year ago. and tsa is not going to change its security protocols. so, that means fewer checkpoints like this, potentially longer lines. the question is, the officers that you see behind me who make between $30,000-$35,000 on average, are they out looking for jobs because the shutdown is

continuing and they have to pay th some contingencies possible for tsa, retention bonuses, maybe h. but americans in the coming days are going to feel the shutdown more and more at these checkpoints across the country. george? >> thank you, david. the center of the shutdown, the battle over a border wall. according to our latest poll, 53% of americans blame president trump and republicans for the stalemate. 29% blame congressional democrats. but the poll also finds that support for the border wall has been rising over the last year. i want to go t blame. but the big question, is it enough to change their approach? >> reporter: so far, this growing public pressure is not making them blink. right now, the two sides are not even talking about talking. congress was at home this weekend. lawmakers back in their districts while the president was at the white house tweeting, insisting that he does, quote, have a plan on the shutdown and is ready to sign.

but we're now in day 24, but still no one knows what the president is willing to sign, where he's willing to compromise, l he's been discussing is the possibility of declaring a national emergency to go around congress to build his wall. but there are some signs that republicans may be concerned that this stalemate may be hurting the party. lindsey graham, one of the president's top allies, is now suggesting the president temporarily reopen the government so they have time to negotiate, george. >> one of the reasons they haven't had enough pressure is that 82% of americans say they have not been inconvenienced. 18% say they're personally affected. of course that could change if we see more reports like we just saw from victor and david. >> reporter: george, both sides may need to feel some reaction from their constituents before they react. 18% say they feel personally affected, now, according to our poll, 79% say it would be a serious problem or a crisis if

this were to continue. if past shutdowns are any indication, we'll only see change only when they feel public pressure. >> we are already in record territory. mary, thanks very much. >> these workers live all over the country so i think it's just a matter of time before the lawmakers feel the pressure and take it back to washington. let's stay in washington. that deadly winter storm killing at least 12 people. causing hundreds of accidents. stephanie ramos is there in washington where they are facing their biggest snowfall in three years. good morning, stephanie. >> reporter: cecilia, good morning. the snow has finally stopped falling here in d.c. we can actually see some of the buildings this morning. but yesterday the snow was nonstop, more than 10 inches of snow falling here in our nation's capital. as you mentioned, this is the biggest snowstorm in three years. and this storm not just impacting people in this area, but across the country. that massive winter blast dumping deadly snow and ice from the midwest to the east coast, leaving millions digging out

this morning. more than 100,000 customers still without power. icy roads proving too dangerous to travel. killing at least 12 people. in illinois, an 11-year-old boy rescued after plunging into an icy pond. whiteout conditions. blinding drivers. wreaking havoc on highways across much of the country. this sand truck flipping over in virginia. one of more than 300 crashes reported. the governor declaring a state of emergency. at least 800 crashes reported in missouri. roads littered with abandoned cars. these trucks stuck bumper to bumper for hours. >> crazy. >> reporter: this pickup truck saving a skidding 18-wheeler, hauling it down the highway. nearly 20 inches of snow snapping branches, burying cars beneath it. airlines also impacted. this delta airlines flight sliding off the runway in cincinnati. icy tarmacs leaving nearly 1,000

as president trump heads to louisiana this morning, two new reports are putting the white house on the defensive. one involves the private talks between the president and vladimir putin. >> i had a conversation like every president does. we had a great conversation. >> reporter: trump fired back against this "washington post" report. it claims the president went to extraordinary lengths to hide his private conversations with the russian leader. >> i'm not keeping anything under wraps. i couldn't care less. i mean, it's so ridiculous. >> reporter: "the post" reports the president actually confiscated his own interpreter's notes on his meeting with putin in hamburg and shut out members of his administration. >> why is he so chummy with vladimir putin? it raises serious questions. >> reporter: it could spur the democrats to subpoena the interpreters. the white house is also pushing back hard against a "new york times" report that says after fbi director james comey was fired, the fbi opened a counterintelligence investigation into whether the president had been working for

russia against american interests. a charge that infuriated president. >> so i'm going to ask you, are you now or have you ever worked for russia, mr. president? >> i think it's the most insulting thing i've ever asked. it's the most insulting article i have ever had written. and if you read the article, you would see they found absolutely nothing. >> reporter: no collusion. that's the president's mantra on this. as robert mueller racks up the guilty pleas and newly empowered house democrats gear up their investigators, whatever that story is, that is coming out. >> we'll hear part of it on february 7th, michael cohen set to testify before congress. the president speaking out. and the house chairman warning the president against interfering with the investigation. >> reporter: that's right, george. michael cohen, the president's longtime lawyer and fixer, has decided to speak in public.

house democrats are concerned about the kind of things that president trump is saying about him. as you pointed out, this might be an obstruction of justice. they want him to testify. >> terry moran, thanks very much. robin. to the massive strike in l.a. 30,000 public school teachers are set to walk the picket lines this morning in the second largest school system in the country. kayna whitworth is there and has those details for us. good morning, kayna. >> reporter: hey, robin, good morning. so the teachers' union here in los angeles saying this is a last resort, but confirming its 30,000 members will strike today after rejecting the district administration's latest deal. now the two sides have been going back and forth on this issue in an effort to avoid a strike. the teachers' union saying they need several issues resolved, including salaries, reduced class size. some teachers saying they have classes with 40 kids in them. they also want nurses hired. the district is saying they simply cannot afford the union's demands. this has the potential of course to be incredibly disruptive for

the more than 600,000 k through 12 students and their families, but the district saying this morning, schools will be providing every student with a safe environment and meals. so they will be open here today, robin. >> how have they prepared for the strike, the schools, kayna? >> reporter: yeah, robin, so, what they have done is hired about 400 substitute teachers. they have also redeployed 2,000 district staff members that have teaching credentials, as well. this hasn't happened in some 30 years. but robin, we also have to keep in mind that the student athletes here will go without practices or games until this is resolved. >> all right, kayna, thank you. breaking news for our viewers in the west. active shooter at a u.p.s. processing facility. they're working with law enforcement there. take a look at the scene just moments ago. according to our station, police officers were seen ducking behind vehicles.

at this moment, no word on injuries. this is a developing situation. we'll have the latest for you on abc.com. thank you. and that breaking news overnight, a cockpit voice recorder from the deadly lion airplane crash in indonesia has been found. the plane, a brand-new 737 max eight, went down in october killing all 189 people on board. the data recorder was found a few months ago. it pointed to a problem with the plane's automatic safety system. no word yet about what this new cockpit recording reveals. george. okay, let's turn -- look at that smile on your face -- the nfl playoffs. the patriots are going to take on the chiefs. robin's saints of course defeated the eagles last night. we're learning -- they had a dramatic win. and we're also learning who will take the stage for the halftime show in the super bowl, maroon 5. janai norman is here with more. this halftime show wasn't easy to pull together. >> reporter: headlining the

that initial hearing will take place in a second floor courtroom in this building behind me here. jayme just finished her first weekend with family since her courageous escape. this morning, a first look at the cabin where jayme closs was kept during her three-month ordeal. in photos as seen on the dailymail.com a basement room shown with a dirty mattress and bedding on the floor, children's toys and backpacks seen piled up. overnight, closs' family speaking out. >> you can tell that she's not quite the same. >> reporter: the teen reunited with her family on friday, one day after escaping from this isolated home in gordon, wisconsin, 70 miles away from where she first disappeared. >> i was the first one she gave a hug to. i was standing in my daughter jennifer's hallway. she come up to me and gave me a big hug and i gave her a big hug. >> reporter: details of her harrowing escape emerging. thursday afternoon, jeanne nutter was out walking her dog. when jayme approached her, disheveled, thin, and without a

coat. >> she was crying and said, i need help, i don't know where i am, i'm lost, please help me. as i got closer to her, ndf gra it's really icy.r ki cl 1.a description provided by jayme, authorities apprehended the suspect, who police say was out looking for her. >> why do we think this suspect targeted jayme and her family? >> you know, the why is the question. i just know that jayme was the target of mr. patterson. he didn't know the closses. he had no contact with the closses that we've been able to uncover at this time. >> reporter: the 21-year-old murder and kidnapping suspect, jake patterson, set to appear in court today as investigators work to find out why he would allegedly take jayme closs after her parents were killed. >> this is a tragic situation from every perspective. his feelings, his emotions are consistent with what you would expect. >> reporter: now home with her

family, jayme's long road to recovery begins, an experience she shares with elizabeth smart, who in 2003 was kidnapped and held captive for nine months before being rescued. smart posting on instagram, let's all try to remember that this young woman has survived, and whatever other details may surface, the most important will still remain that she is alive. the criminal complaint will be filed today could finally shed some light on a possible motive in this case. the suspect's attorney says he will not be entering a plea today. robin. >> alex, thank you. and elizabeth smart, a child advocate, joins us now. elizabeth, thank you so very much for being with us. what were your initial thoughts when you heard that jayme had been found alive? >> i was so happy. it was just a big, huge reminder that there are so many children out there who are waiting to be found. i'm just so happy that jayme was found alive. >> we need to continue to think

about that. you have done endless work in that regard, elizabeth. you have a unique perspective. what possibly could jayme be going through in these early days back with her family? >> right now, at this point in time, i feel like it's very, very vital for her to rebuild those relationships with family. because, unfortunately, her family was brutally torn apart. this is just a very important time to try to rebuild, to come together again, to start a fresh to try to create a new normal. because, unfortunately, there is no going back to the old normal. there's only a new normal. >> and you can understand why officials are saying they are giving her all the time she needs to tell her story, and that's the right path to take, isn't it? >> absolutely. everyone should be giving her as much time and space as she needs. and if she doesn't want to talk, then i think that's her complete prerogative. >> you so beautifully wrote that in your instagram.

you said, everybody, do not speculate about the details of her captivity. that is so important to keep in mind, isn't it? >> absolutely. even i can't speculate what she went through. i can only go off my own experiences. and a lot of the things that i went through, i was very embarrassed of. i was ashamed of. i didn't want people to know what i had been through. and i can only imagine that she, too, feels the same way. >> and you said this does not have to be a defining moment for her just like it was not for you. how can she recover? what help can you give her? >> it's so easy to feel that this is going to define me for the rest of my life, this is going to be all anyone ever knows me for. i know i certainly have felt that way. but i want her to know that this doesn't have to be that. >> beautifully said. elizabeth smart, thank you so much. we're glad that you're doing as well as you are. we know that gives jayme's family hope, as well. you take care, elizabeth.

welcome back to "gma." and as we hit the peak of flu season, look at this map. it shows how symptoms have spread across the country since december. the cdc says up to 7 million people have caught the flu this season. t.j. holmes went to a school to see how easily germs can spread. hey, t.j. >> reporter: good morning, george. get this, some hospitals in this country have actually said, hey kids, unless you're a patient here, don't show up. they have banned kids from hospitals. they're trying to prevent the spread of disease. we know kids in particular, schools, are prime places for the spread of germs. kids are little petri dishes. you've heard that saying, but it's something else when you actually see it. oh! the lips? you see those bright spots? those could be germs, and they're all over these kids. you have it all in your hair. >> remember the genre we talked about yesterday?

>> reporter: but just a few hours earlier, not a trace. "gma" teamed up with miss schaffsma's 5th grade class at chicago christian school to demonstrate how rapidly germs can spread. we use a harmless powder called glo germ. who's first? we pulled two students out of class. oh, yeah, see. we do that. look what happens? it comes on me, and that's how germs spread. we follow the students' every move and in less than a minute we see aiden touch the water fountain. the water fountain of course a popular spot for students. one study tells us that up to 2.7 million bacteria per square inch are on the spigot. it has more than 800 times the amount found on a toilet seat. essentially it's now ground zero for the spread of the powder. once in the classroom, both aiden and mckenzie use this smartboard pen that every single kid in class touches. after an hour, i head into the classroom while the kids are at recess to check for signs of the glo germ.

>> reporter: the incredible emergency landing of u.s. airways flight 1549 after hitting a flock of geese, paralyzing its engines. >> there's an airplane down in the hudson river right off manhattan. >> reporter: 155 souls on board allsurviving, including a 9-month-old baby. our own robin roberts witnessed the crash from her apartment overlooking the hudson. >> it was just a -- an amazing landing. the fuselage never broke up. anything like that. >> reporter: it became known as the miracle on the hudson. the miracle worker, captain chesley sullenberger, famously known as sully, the hero pilot who landed the plane in the middle of the river between new york city and new jersey. >> this was your landing strip? >> we made a runway out of a river. by doing that, i knew we had the best chance of saving every life. we would avoid the possibility of a post-crash fire. >> reporter: just a few hundred

feet from where the plane crashed with the ferries behind us, sully reflected on the tenth anniversary. >> i knew immediately it would be a life-changing event for everyone on the ple eir families. the first new york waterway ferry arrived 3:55 after we touched the water. that was critical, especially on such a cold day have gotten wet and hypothermia can kill in minutes. >> reporter: the teamwork of the passengers, crews, volunteers and first responders says a lot about our world. >> when we work together, when we remember our common humanity, there is little we cannot accomplish. >> reporter: later today, sully will reunite with many of those passengers on board that plane. tomorrow is the actual anniversary. there will be a ceremony and a get-together for the passengers and crew. i'll get to share an exclusive interview with sully and some of the passengers tomorrow. i'm heading to charlotte right now. they have the plane in the aviation museum there for people to witness and see the miracle itself. >> the passengers who kept in touch -- i thought that was your phone again. the passengers have kept in
