>> pg&e stock lost 80% of value in two years. 2017 stock plummeted following the north bay wild fire and lost quarter of its value. it lost almost half the value with the steep drop following the campfire. today stock dropped in half again. at its peek, the stock was trading at 70 a share. >> cal fire says pg&e started nearly all of the north bay wild fires. which broke out on the october 8, 2017. combined the fires burned more than 300 square miles destroying 8,900 buildings and claimed 44 lives. continuing the live team coverage with reaction from wild fire survivors. >> they're not surprised be i it. they were expecting it. not this soon. >> reporter: the fire storm neighborhoods are beginning to look better.

connected with that explosion. ordered to place a $3 million fine and five years probation. >> it turned to the court and sale of state bonds to recover before. some are already forecasting the same could happen again. live from the south bay. with that part of the story. >> 2001 bankruptcy had to do with a sudden surge in energy cost. a credit crunch resulted as a result of the bond ratings for pg&e being downgraded. because of that and because of knowledge from the earlier bankruptcy the there's concern the same thing may happen again this time putting pressure on shareholders and customers. and also the state. >> reporter: pg&e customers are still paying a charge on the monthly bill dating back to the utility companies 2001 bankruptcy. to pay off bonds sold by the state. a former state utility commissioner says it's because pg&e credit took a hit by the

bankruptcy. >> the department of water resources had to buy power for the state. when because of the pg&e bankruptcy. and the downgraded credit for the utilities. so 19 years later we're still paying for that. >> the circumstances were different. 2001 case tied to market manipulation. that led to a sharp rise in wholesale energy cost. pg&e will need to finance operations including pay sup plirs of natural gas. >> would we be seeing a yunchcr in terps of commodity in february, march or april. certainly may or june as the cashruns out. >> the bankruptcy announcement comes three weeks before san jose launches the clean energy service. pg&e plays a critical role. clean energy says it doesn't foresee any issues. >> everything is business as usual. they will continue to do all the

always have. as for impacts on the bills, you could pay more and could actually pay less. >> history doesn't always repeat itself. we can learn from the past. pg&e filed for bankruptcy in 2001. the utility had lost its credit. it didn't have the money to purchase the energy needed to power the homes and businesses of its customers. so then governor davis ordered the california department of water resources to step in and purchase the power. the utility reform net work says consumers are still paying for that purchase. today. >> the pg&e customer ended up paying about $6.5 billion for the power that was purchased on pg&e's behalf. >> look at your bill. the line under dwr. bond charge. is a monthly fee you're still paying as a result.

a swat team rescued two women taken hostage. shot and killed the gunman today. in southern new jersey. witnesses say that man stormed into a ups facility. some of them heard shots being fired. investigators believe the 39 year-old man had a prior relationship with one of the hostages. both women escaped without being hurt. >> the suspect appears in court.
