right now a deadly winter storm is still pounding the bay area with rain. flooded streets and it has left thousands in the dark. >> let's give you a look right now at current conditions across the bay area. on the left, san jose. the rain is still pouring down. >> in the middle you're looking at san francisco and on the right, oakland. what can you expect overnight and tomorrow? >> let's go to sandy. >> this has been a storm that has delivered. that atmospheric river soaking the area. you can see where the focus of the storm. is it is primarily the south and east bay. street level, mt. hamilton, some pockets of moderate showers. santa clara west. the mountains, gilroy, you are also still getting wet. across highway 101, san martin, the peninsula, got reports of torrential down you llotice it

rain. the peninsula is starting to ease up. strong thunderstorms rumbled through parts of the bay area as we take you back in time keeping this as a strong level 3 through tonight. damaging wind gusts. the combination will cause trees to topple and flooding. hour by hour we go. south bay, east bay, seeing the focus. 3:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. it is primarily moderate to showers across the bay area. the small streams continue to flood. flood warnings in effect until wee hours of the morning. we also have flood advisories is the wind gusts advisories are not as stro. in hills we have over

50-mile-an-hour winds. i'll be back with a number of other warnings tomorrow. >> all right. thank you. in oakland, a man died after a tree fell on top of him on interstate 580. highway patrol officers believe he loifd an embankment. his friends found him around 5:30 this evening. >> they came to see him and that's when they realized. they called 911. >> caltrans owns the area where the man died so it is in charge of finding out what caused the tree to fall. the county coroner is working to identify the man. crews are waiting for winds to die down before they'll right the overturned truck that was knocked down because of the winds. the truck has blocked two lanes since about 8:00 this evening.

traffic is squeezing by along the shoulder. the truck's driver, you'll be glad to know, was not hurt. and we have live team coverage across the bay area. we begin in the north bay where trees have crashed down on a home and a car nearly crushing the people inside. cornell? >> reporter: yeah, the rain has just start up again. this storm, i have to tell you, it has been fierce and feroci uprooting lots of trees all over the place. like the one here. this tree fell through a fence and on to a house in the dstance, doing some damage there. the fire department says luckily, nobody was hurt. far from here, there was another close call when another big tree came down. the crews in mill valley were busy cutting down a huge tree which came down in the storm, crushing the rear of the car and narrowly missing the people inside. nobody got hurt.

it happened right across from marin school. >> i think it is really bad when there are people inside but at least they didn't get hit by the tree. >> reporter: the storm was powerful enough to tople this 125 foot tall redwood tree splitting a power pole in two and cutting power on to about 60 home. >> due to the strong winds, the tree gave way and came down on the power lines. >> a downed tree crushed this parked car in novato. luckily nobody was inside. >> many streets flooded quickly, driving through water was risky. back in mill valley, there was a mad dash with push brooms the keep the rising floodwaters away. >> when the drain gets clogged, all bets are off. it's going to flood. >> reporter: as luck would have it, the club did not flood after a storm drain nearby was

unclogged. the mill valley fire department said they got more than 40 calls since 3:00 today related to the storm including lots of downed trees. it's been a very busy night here. abc7 news. >> thanks. in marin county, downed fire lines have caused part of lukas valley road to close. t the. and water has submerged highways 12 and 121 in shellville. the intersection is closed. however, people are driving on the flooded section of 121 as you see. a highway patrol officer and helped push an suv that broke down in the flood waters. >> let's take you to the south bay, still getting drenched by the storm. >> an overflowing creek is pouring into back yards.

>> crews actually cleared this ea just about ten minutes ago. they were working very quickly to save this home along the road from any flooding. we took a look around the home and the water was up to my knees. it is just incredible. water rushing through the openings of this brick wall. as the homeowner was nearly in tears, fearing wall would give way at any moment. it created a river rushing around her home. she says the nearby creek was recently plugged leaving the water nowhere to go. and the six-foot crawl space beneath the home she said is flooded. she's spent the last 23 years at this home and it has survived many storms. nothing like the outcome you're seeing now. i asked whether the family made any special preparations before the storm and unfortunately, that was not the case. >> this is nothing compared to what you see in the back.

it is a huge lake. because the water, everything is draining from that side. the creek is plugged. so all behind that wall. >> and crews showed up around 10:00 p.m. with sandbags. i'm going to come back live so you can see what crews were helping with. beneath that, it looked like a river rushing throug the front of her garage space. i spoke with her just moments ago and she said luckily the rain has lightened up and you're not seeing any of that flooding happening right now. but in the case that the rain does come back and the downpour picks up, it could be the same fate that she saw about an hour ago. i'm reporting hive in saratoga. abc7 news. >> thank you. and police are closing off streets in a pleasant hill neighborhood. water from a near by creek along the east bay mud trail has flowed over the banks into a

residential area. the front yards of some areas are inundated with storm runoff. >> pg&e's power outage map has been lit up all evening. the north bay has been one of the hardest hit areas. more than 82,000 customers are in the dark. 38,000 are in napa, sonoma and marin counties. 18,000 are on the peninsula. and the south bay, more than 19,000 customers are in the dark. 4,600 customers are affected in the east bay including my sister. .with her a shrt time ago. and 2,200 are in san francisco. pleasant hill b.a.r.t. station. the trains are once again moving. a tree fell on to the train tracks, striking one of the b.a.r.t. cars. no injuries and no damage. they did have a single track for a couple of hours. this is abc7 news. air travellers can expect more delays in san francisco international airport due to

you will notice that we are still seeing some steady moderate rain across that area. still seeing some spotty showers developing from lucas valley, heading toward san pablo avenue, into vallejo and american canyon. don't be surprised if you see the showers popping up. it is an unstable atmosphere. look at the storm reports across the bay area. 85 reports including debris flow and thunderstorms. this storm system is still tightly wound up. we're going to continue to deal with the second half of this. the rain has eased but the rainfall totals are adding you. over two inches in santa rosa, reood city, concord, an inch or a little more. oakland almost an inch. we did see over a half a foot of

rain if sonoma county. so definitely some heavy rainfall. i want to show you the rainfall in st. helena. it is expected to crest at 16 feet. no flooding is expected but if you live in that area, you'll want to monitor it in case it changes. napa valley. 25 feet. forecast to crest at 22.2 feet. high wind warning until 3:00 a.m. tomorrow. the winds are still gusting so watch out for powerful downed trees. a wind advisory until 3:00 a.m. gusty winds still could cause some problems. here's a live picture looking at the shark tank with those clouds overhead. the heaviest wind tapering. showers and gusty winds. not as windy as it has been friday and sunday. so here's a look at the storm
