the judge's decision on prison time. plus, days after its controversial me too commercial, gillette under fire again accused of charging women higher prices than men. the company's response. caught on video, the great white shark believed to be the biggest in the world. and one customer's special gift to his favorite worker at mcdonald's. she had no idea. good thursday morning, everyone. we begin with the powerful storm taking shape that's expected to deliver brutal winter weather to much of the country. >> the storm slammed into the west coast overnightwith damaging winds and torrential rain. the conditions have triggered mudslides and forced some interstates to close. >> on radar you can see most of the state is covered in either rain or snow. all of this just the beginning

of what's being called a blockbuster storm that will affect millions of people from coast to coast. overnight in california, pounding rain in the bay area. strong winds toppling this semi truck on a san francisco bridge man. near san jose water is pouring into this homeowner's backyard as a nearby creek begins to swell. in malibu the driver's side of this car smashed in after a rockslide came crashing down sending a boulder right into the vehicle. one person in the car was hospitalized. and the road was shut down overnight. and in long beach traffic forced to move through flooded roads. in other parts of the state it's 50-mile-per-hour winds and whiteout conditions causing problems like the 19-vehicle pileup on the 15 freeway in san bernardino county. >> someone is really hurt right there. >> reporter: areas in the sierra nevada could get 100 inches of snow. at an airport near lake tahoe this plane stuck in a wheelie with the tail covered in snow.

this storm hitting california along with another storm will cause a one-two punch for the northeast by the weekend according to abc's ginger zee. >> let's watch the two storms move across the nation. who will it impact? you go to friday morning. the commute in the tri-state could be slick and messy even with just a dusting to up to three inches in the area you see covered there and by the weekend everybody is talking about this storm. it looks like heavy snow potential from cleveland up to say burlington, a mix closer to the coast and rain south of there. >> the storms will move into the plains and midwest then collide with arctic air. we'll have the new track from accuweather in just a few moments. a georgia man is under arrest accused of plotting to attack the white house and statue of liberty. the fbi says it got a tip from local law enforcement last month that the 21-year-old had been radicalized. agents began a sting operation. he was arrested when he allegedly traded his car for what he thought were real guns and explosives. the fbi says he was acting alone. >> his alleged intent was to attack the white house and other targets of opportunity in the

washington, d.c. area by using explosive devices including an improvised explosive device and anti-tank rocket. >> the suspect allegedly told the undercover agent they would blow down a rear door at the white house and shoot as many people as possible. >> president trump's plan to withdraw u.s. troops from syria is under new scrutiny following a deadly attack. isis claimed responsibility for the suicide blast that killed four americans wednesday including two military service members and two civilians. along with at least 12 others. it happened just weeks after al. it happened just weeks after president trump said isis have been defeated. the attack prompted a usual trump ally to suggest the president is in effect daring isis to kill americans. >> and as they get bolder, the people trying to help will get more uncertain. i saw this in iraq. and we're now seeing it in syria. every american wants our troops

to come home but i think all of us want to make sure when they do come home we're safe. >> hours before the attack, vice president pence echoed the president's claim isis has been defeated. later pence issued a statement that stopped short of declaring complete victory over isis. meanwhile, there is a new attempt to turn up the pressure on president trump as the government shutdown approaches week five. house speaker nancy pelosi is urging the president to delay his state of the union address. it's a move that could deprive him of a key prime-time platform as the president stands his ground on the border wall. we're learning more this morning about what he is saying behind closed doors. abc's elizabeth hur has the details. elizabeth, good morning. >> reporter: janai, good morning to you. it is a bold move by the speaker and republicans are set to be weighing their options. as for the president, he still is publicly not budging but reportedly it's a different story behind closed doors. >> what do we want? [ chanting ] >> reporter: federal workers rallying across the country saying enough is enough. >> what do we want? [ chanting "paid" ] >> when do we want it? [ chanting "now" ]

>> reporter: in washington dozens of furloughed workers even paying senate majority leader mitch mcconnell's office a visit to try to make a personal plea. >> i've been at the pawnshop. i've pawned everything that i can imagine, and now i'm just at my wit's end. >> reporter: families who have never had to depend on donations say they are now turning to food banks for help. the impact even trickling down to students who rely on free or reduced fee meals at school. one north carolina school announcing lunch menus are being revised to conserve food and funding. >> the sooner they can do something about it, the better it'll be for us low-income families. >> reporter: the ripple effect of the shutdown also now hitting the alcohol industry. colorado senator mike bennett saying several breweries have delayed the launch of new beers or are concerned batches could spoil as they wait for government approval. president trump to democrats, without $5.7 billion for the border wall, no deal. but according to "the new york times," a different tune from the president in private

conversations reportedly stating we are getting crushed and asking why can't we get a deal? and now house speaker nancy pelosi writing to the president essentially telling him without a deal to re-open the government, no state of the union address. >> it's about security. >> reporter: there you have it. the speaker maintains this is not about politics but security with the secret service and the department of homeland security affected by the shutdown, but homeland security officials say they are fully prepared to do their job. janai. >> elizabeth, just incredible to see how this could impact kids at school as they work to conserve food. thank you, elizabeth hur. well, los angeles teachers and school district officials head back to the negotiating table today. the session is the first since the teachers went on strike monday. mayor eric garcetti called on both sides to re-open talks. it's unclear if any new contract proposals will be offered. the teachers are demanding better pay, smaller classes and more support staff. time now for a look at your weather forecast this thursday.

good morning. this next storm pounding the west coast starts off in the northwest corner of the country with heavy showers along the coast and then snow as you move inland and the same holds true for us throughout portions of california where we're really concerned about the heaviest rain causing massive mudslides as well as a significant amount of flooding. spotty showers with a chance of thunderstorms and maybe even severe weather throughout the deep south and the northeast watching out for the snow making a move throughout the ohio valley region and the northeast throughout the weekend. i'm accuweather meteorologist paul williams. coming up, bill gates spotted somewhere you wouldn't expect. but first a new development r. kelly. word that his former manager is now expected to surrender to police. and later, how a loyal customer at mcdonald's rewarded his favorite worker behind the counter.

test test test test we're back with video with a large group of migrants turning themselves into border patrol agents near a remote crossing in new mexico. officials say they were brought in by smugglers from central america and many needed medical care. the group of nearly 250 people included families with small children. border patrol says smugglers have trafficked at least two dozen group of migrants since last fall in that area alone. a former teacher from tennessee is starting a 20-year prison sentence for running away with one of his students. 52-year-old tad cummins sparked a nationwide manhunt back in 2017 when he disappeared with elizabeth thomas who was 15 at the time. they were found more than a month later at a remote cabin in california. cummins pled guilty and apologized to thomas and his own family in court.

a statement from thomas read in court called him disgusting. singer r. kelly is no longer just facing accusations of sexual misconduct, his former manager has reportedly turned g terroristic threats against the family of one of kelly's girlfriends.jocelyn savage's fa she's being held captive by kelly but savage denies that. in the meantime, building inspecters in chicago say they found code violations at kelly's studio including evidence that it was being used as a residence. kelly's attorney denies anyone was living in that studio. sears is still alive at least for now. ceo edward lampert reportedly sweetened his offer to hold off creditors. he plans to keep 400 stores open with most of the 50,000 workers. lampert also wants to hold on to the kenmore and diehard brands. analysts fear sears is still losing money and may not be big enough to fight amazon and walmart. so bill gates can afford to

[ chanting "boys will be boys" ] >> reporter: the ad has been viewed 15 million times just this week. many critics slammed the video saying it portrays all men as bad examples, and now people who once supported the ad are

turning against gillette because of the so-called pink tax when products advertised towards women cost more than similar products for men. one woman writing on twitter, the new gillette ad is great but why is an 8-pack of women's blades $3 to $4 more than men's and photos like this are popping up on social media. pictures from retailers' websites showing the difference in prices between gillette razor blades for men and women. according to "forbes," a recent report from the new york city department of consumer affairs found women's products cost 7% more than similar products for men. in a statement overnight to abc news, gillette's parent company, procter & gamble, says, we don't apply a pink tax under any circumstance. shaving different hair on different body parts in different environments requires fundamentally different products. and, meanwhile, despite the backlash to its recent me too commercial, gillette says it has no plans to pull the ad. the interim president of michigan state university is resigning in the wake of controversial comments he made about victims of former school

doctor, larry nassar. john engler was brought in to help the school deal with the aftermath of the nassar sexual abuse scandal. last week engler told a newspaper that nassar's victims are, quote, still enjoying the spotlight and the awards and recognition after they came out against nassar. one of the richest families in the country is accused of helping to fuel the opioid epidemic. the massachusetts attorney general claims the sackler family, which owns purdue pharma, maker of oxycontin, was part of a campaign of deception about the dangers of the drug. eight members of the family are accused of misleading patients and doctors to increase sales. when evidence of oxycontin and its abuse was mounting, richard sackler allegedly urged the company to blame addicts allegedly writing in an email, quote, we have to hammer on the abusers in every way possible. they are the culprits and the problem. they are reckless criminals. purdue pharma calls the allegations misleading and says it will aggressively defend against the claims. a worker at a mcdonald's in kansas is sporting new wheels

receded. you can now drive through here today. let me show you what it looked like just a couple of hours ago. this intersection was flooded. this is port chicago attiat kinnie boulevard. this is close to the sassoon bay. this came from the mt. diablo creek which runs along the port chicago freeway. we don't have reports of anyone getting stuck or cars floating away through here. now it is clear. here's a look at the creek right now. it's calmed down. it has receded. it doesn't look like it will be causing any more problems. this was just too much rain all at once for this creek to handle. it spilled over its banks and right into this intersection. reporting live in concord, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> thank you, amy. glad to see that's looking better now. in the south bay, crews worked quickly to
