mile and a half. so you'll have a little bit of slowing there. we'll show you what our sensors look like in a few minutes. yeah. the santa cruz mountains always bear the brunt of a lot of wind and heavy rain. weoave big side. this one is over in newark. it happened about 10:30 last night. they're just still in the process of clearing it. you are being diverted from eastbound 84 to southbound 880. you can't continue on until the big rig is back on its wheels. that should be another 40 minutes or so. guys. >> thanks, sue. crews will be cleaning up the mess from trees falling. >> this huge tree fell during a storm, it crashed into the rear of a car and crashed into a home. the tree narrowly missed the people inside. nobody was hurt. it was a different story in the east bay where a man died after a tree fell on him. it happened in oakland on the embankment off interstate 580 near macarthur boulevard.

they think he lived along the side of the freeway. he was found and called 9-1-1. cal trans owns the land so it's in charge of figuring out what caused the tree to fall. >> a couple was driving along the road in san jose when they hit a tree that had come down. it happened before the lawrence expressway. that couple is okay. marin county, downed power lines closed part of lucas valley road between big rock trail and nicasio valley road. the damaged lines may not be repaired until later today. the santa clara fire department tweeted this video of damage caused by a tree that went down in saratoga. the falling tree brought down power lines and a transformer. they're warning the public to stay away from the fallen power lines. they could be energized. more problems in east san jose. a busy intersection went dark after a ford truck crashed into a light pole. police say the driver was taken

to the hospital. traffic was snarled for more than two hours. about 3500 pe customers in the bay area are without power this morning. the north bay is one of the hardest hit areas, as of an hour something, 17,000 customers in the dark. 7200 customers without power in the peninsula. and 6400 customers in the south bay. in the east bay, the outages are affected about 4,800 customers and san francisco, just one customer without power. travelers are warned to expect more delays at san francisco international airport due to the weather today. you're looking live at sfo. airlines canceled 156 flights yesterday. another 477 were delayed. that adds up to more than one-third of the average daily passenger flights at sfo. if the wind and rain aren't enough, now come huge waves. there's a high surf warning in effect along the coastline for today and tomorrow.

breakers could peak between 40 and 50 feet high. >> the coast guard is urging everyone to stay off the water and away from the coastlines unless you absolutely have to. it brings hazards, high wind, low visibility, choppy seas and it's dangerous for people who don't have to be in this environment. >> the coast guard says anyone heading out on the water should file a float plan and double-check your safety gear. that was a lot of weather problem information. >> but we kind of knew we would have something like that this morning. >> mike, today will be calmer, right? >> the fastest winds will taper by the lunch hour. i want to talk about the high surf warning. the swells are about 11 feet. those are the swells. the breakers are always bigger as you get closer to the coast. so localized coastal flooding is possible here. today is the first day of king

tide. they climax in the highest levels so far this winter on sunday. we'll have more coastal flooding and bay flooding. so when the bay floods, because of king tides, they put out a coastal flood advisory. that's coming in right now. that should have said today. i changed it but didn't save it. 6.3 feet is the high tide at 7:42. that's at the golden gate. of course, it will be later. that's why it's until 9:00 for the entire bay, as that swell moves to the east ever so slowly. let's talk about what's going on today. we'll go region by region. in the north bay, the best chance of showers today. you may bet a little break by 8:00 when cooler weather comes in. unlike yesterday, we have a normal bell curve to the temperature. t evening. we cop out at 55 at 2:00. we have a best chance of scattered showers all the way up until 2:00. and mostly cloudy and

temperatures dropping back from near 60 to the mid-50s during the evening hours. for san francisco, same thing, best chance of rain now through 2:00 and then mostly cloudy and hack out in the mid to upper 50s throughout the day. another chance of showers tomorrow, we'll take a look at what's going to be a drier weekend. kind of need it. >> just a little groundwater -- my backyard was a lake. >> was it really? >> it drains out. >> it didn't get into the house? >> no. no flooding there. thank goodness. the roadways a different problem, though. we have ponding and flooding around a lot of the bay area. heads-up there. a little bit of slowing out of central valley for our early morning commuters getting up and at 'em. the big rig on its side for another half hour. you can see slow traffic headed towards the new park area and 84 in the eastbound direction. yo divte on to southbound 880. just be forewarned, there is a detour in place for to get this

this is abc 7 mornings. take a look at what's going on in the high country. let's take a look at, yep, looks like it's going to be a chance of wet weather just about everywhere with snow continuing up in the sierra. in fact, don't do it. blizzard conditions continue and that leftover snow will make tomorrow slippery. you're good to go saturday. more snow is coming in. that should say sunday. let's take a look at an update. we still have a blizzard. the worst conditions will continue until noon today. hold off the travel if you can because of the whiteout conditions. we'll have heavy snow through 4:00 tomorrow morning. that means the earlier you head up friday, the more likely you'll be in trouble with those icy roads. one to two feet abe00et lds anghrgh 7:0 tomorrow morning.

please be careful. alexis? >> thanks, mike. a group of oakland teachers is planning to hold a major disruption tomorrow. this is video of a similar protest last month where students and teachers marched to oakland city hall. the group of teachers called the wildcat underground say they are protesting the slow pace of contract negotiations between the oakland unified school district and the teachers union. organizers say teachers and students from several schools will gather at oakland tech at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow to rally outside the school before marching to school district offices on broadway at 9:00 a.m. it has come to this. the city council has unanimously approved a plan to provide no-interest short-term loans to federal airport employees hit by the government shutdown. the city will use airport fund to provide the loans to employees. the lns evereeorrs get their back pay. 500 federal workers at mineta san jose airport are currently involved in this mess. the daily absence rate at mineta jumped from the usual 3% to 14%.

we are entering day 27 of the government shutdown. there is still no end in sight to the political stalemate between president trump and the democrats. >> republicans are dismissing house speaker nancy pelosi's request that the president postpone his planned state of the union address. abc news reporter elizabeth hur has the latest. >> good morning. it is a bold move by the speaker and republicans are said to be weighing options. as for the president, he's publicly not budging but reportedly it's a different story behind closed doors. >> federal workers rallying across the country saying enough is enough. >> what do we want? pay. >> in washington, dozens of furloughed workers even paying senate majority leader mitch mcconnell's office a visit to try to make a personal plea. >> everything that i can imagine and now i'm at my wit's end. >> it's trickling down to students who rely on free or reduced fee meals at school. one north carolina school

it's the fourth blizzard warning over the past ten years. chains are currently required for drivers on interstate 80 and highway 50. in addition, avalanche danger is high today. skiers and snowboarders should not plan to hit the slopes today. however, resorts expect conditions to be amazing with all the fresh powder starting tomorrow and through the holiday weekend. just how heavy is the snow in the sierra? look at your screen. heavy enough to tilt a private jet on its tail. look at these photos from the truckee airport taken by marc lamb. they had to gently clear the snow away to lower the jet's front end. the airport says it got 16 inches of snow just yesterday. >> wow. >> popping a wheelie there. >> wow. showing off. >> the owner of that aircraft, i would be real upset. >> you bet. >> not going to fly anywhere today. >> i guess not. >> very gently we would hope. millions of dollars at stake.

hydroplaning is high because when we get the scattered showers, they could be intense and leave standing water on the roads. that's why i have flooding on the roads at moderate. as far as the trees coming down, power lines and small streams flooding, the winds are too light and the rain won't be widespread enough for small stream flooding. we'll look at sunday's rain next. >> thanks, mike. a california law eliminting bail for suspects waiting for trial is on hold this morning. secretary of state alex padilla says a referendum qualified for the 2020 ballot could overturn the measure. the law would replace bail with a risk assessment system. supporters say the change will end the unfair practice of imprisoning people simply because they're poor. opponents say they could let dangerous people go free. >> san francisco officials will discuss keeping the outside lands music and arts festival at golden gate park for decades. it expires in 2021. park officials want to extend it to 2031. some people who live near golden gate park told the chronicle

especially tomorrow. you can see the clock right there in the day friday. that's the best chance of any showers tomorrow is going to be across the north bay. let's jump ahead. here we are sunday at 12:00. clock strikes midnight and by 7:00, you can see the light rain over just about all of our neighborhoods. notice by 10:00, it's in the east bay. the heart of the bay and in the south bay. by the time we get to 4:00, it's out of here. so the later you wait in the day to venture out, the more likely you'll be dry. rainfall amounts will be low. a tenth to a quarter of an inch. it's a 1. light on the storm impact scale. it could be the last one for a long time. here's sue. >> we're looking at chain controls throughout the sierra on highway 50 and 80 to get up there. no road closures. as mike has been saying, there's blizzard warnings out there. if you want to slide under right now might be the time to do it. towards the san mateo bridge, high winds this morning for all of the bay area bridges. you're looking atb oh, 15-minute drive from 880 towards 101.

solo spinout seem to be the thing with standing water still in lanes. we had a big rig on its side since 10:30 last night. eastbound 84 into newark. you're being diverted off southbound 880 so you can't get to dakota there. you have to take the detour. they're hoping to have the big rig out of there within the next few minutes. we'll be fog that for you. >> thank you, sue. if you eat protein bars, they're recalling some products because they contain peanuts. it involved 12 plafrs flavors of the bars and eating one could trigger a life-threatening reaction in people with peanut allergies. rx say it came from something from a third party. a list is on our website, abc7news.com. >> those are super popular. especially in buj i gyms.
