this is abc 7 mornings. right now at 5:00, the cleanup after heavy wind, rain and flooding. this is new video from the south bay overnight. our matt keller joins us live with a look at the conditions this morning. >> good morning to you on this thursday, january 17th where things are calming down. >> thank goodness. but unfortunately, thousands of people in the bay area are still without power this morning after yesterday's powerful storm. take a look at pg&e's outage map. at last check about 35,000 customers are without power. that includes 17,000 in the north bay, about 7,000 on the

peninsula and more than 6,000 in the south bay. nearly 5,000 in the east bay. crews have been working through the night to get the power back on. let's get a check now of the much calmer forecast with meteorologist mike nicco. >> yes. we grappled yesterday. i did, with changing that to a four. keeping it a three was a good call. we just didn't have the major river flooding that we had during our strongest storm, which was january 8th two years ago when we had that 4. remember the flooding and the russian river flooded in the north bay. that's the difference. thunderstorms are possible in the north bay and locally breezy conditions around those showers and thunderstorms like we saw moved through navarro and ukiah. most of us are cloudy like at 280 and 17 with residual moisture on the ground everywhere including the south bay. >> those will taper, but so will our chances of showers as we head into the afternoon and evening hours. going to be a mild day with

temperatures in the upper 50s. here's sue. >> we'll take a look at the roadways out there. we'll go to the bay bridge toll plaza first and take a look at the no metering lights. we have a little bit of backup there from the cash paying folks in the left hand lanes. you may want to stay to the right. the roads are still pretty wet out there even though the rain is not coming down. we have a high advisory for the bridge. slowing out of central valley for a 35 to 40-minute drive from up and over the altamont pass with high winds as well. eastbound 84 to southbound 880. being detoured. it is on its side for a few more minutes. trying to get it up on its wheels. it happened at 10:30 last night. we'll check back in a few minutes. heavy rains caused a mudslide in danville. town officials post ted this photo. part of la began da is closed to traffic because of this traffic. you can use danville boulevard

as you detour. b.a.r.t. trains are moving again after a downed tree hit a b.a.r.t. car just before 6:00 last night. b.a.r.t. had to single track for a few hours while crews cleaned that up. no injuries or damage were reported. ferry service is back to normal after a rough evening commute. choppy waves and gusty winds on the bay. that was definitely a rough ride home for those folks. this video was taken between san francisco and alameda. the ferry had to cancel a few evening runs because of those tough conditions. >> it was acting like it was normal. >> holding on to something. >> me too. now we'll go to the santa cruz mountains. this is new video from overnight of arcing wires in los gatos. you can see a small fire was sparked. pg&e is at the scene and no word on the impact for customers in the area. also in the santa cruz mountains, highway 35 closed in both directions because of a mudslide. trees are down across the roadway. this video shot around 3:30 this

morning at bear creek road and gist. they're respond to go clear the road. let's get more continuing coverage of our storm aftermath. >> there's enough to cover. we have matt keller live above the guadalupe river in san jose where there is a bit of good news. matt? >> reporter: yes, good morning alexis. guadalupe river reached flood stage overnight at about 11:15 last night. it was at 9.15 feet. flood stage is 8.5 feet. thankfully, it's been going down ever since. the latest observation has it at 3 feet below flood stage of the a lot of localized flooding. a maserati stuck in the floodwaters on the ramp on to hamilton avenue in campbell. this was around 11:00 last night. chp closed the off ramp until a tow truck could remove the vehicle. it wasn't just flooding causing the issues. a lot of trees went down, knocking down wires.

this is on bascom south of union avenue. this is an apartment complex with a big mess to clean up today. a lot of power outages in san jose. i checked the outage map for pg&e. it showed more than 2200 customers in san jose without power. reporting live in san jose, matt keller, abc 7 news. >> thanks, matt. crews cleared this collision on the richmond-san rafael bridge overnight. it was knocked on its side just after 8:00 last night. the driver is okay. traffic was able to get by. just on the shoulder. the highway patrol says it had to wait for winds do die down before they uprighted it. junctions of highway 12 and -- still driving along the flooded sections. yikes. one officer and other people helped to push an suv that ended up stalling in the floodwaters. this morning, crews will be busy cleaning up trees that got knocked down in the storm. >> reporter kate larsen has more

from san francisco. >> from the bay bridge to san francisco freeways and streets, a soaking downpour made for a messy commute. >> i knew it was going to rain but not this hard. >> greg is a rideshare driver and discovered that rain is actually good for business. >> people that would ride bikes and walk are taking lyfts or uber. >> the wind a added to the mess by blowing over trees sitting in saturated soil in neighborhoods throughout san francisco. firefighters worked to clean up this tree that fell at fill more and hey streets. cable car service came to a standstill after two trees fell across the tracks. >> i've seen them tracrack. look at this branch here. >> he took a cell phone video of firefighters showing up to help. winter storms make him wary of the city's aging trees. >> it's not safe to walk under huge trees when they're laden with water and you can hear them creaking and ready to -- you can

see them stressing. you know they're going to break. >> if you live in san francisco and have a tree in your neighborhood on public property that is posing an imminent safety concern, call 311 to report it. in san francisco, i'm kate larsen, abc 7 news. you're never more than seven minutes away. we have gusty winds across our bridges, especially the ones that go east-west, dumbarton, san mateo, bay bridge, richmond-san rafael bridge. that's until 9:00. that gives you an idea the storm is unwinding. we have flooding in petaluma, santa rosa. some of the creeks we showed you that people are using jet skis are, they're receding back into their banks. there's a possibility the flooding will linger until 8:15 this morning. coastal high surf warning. just kicked in through 5:00 tomorrow evening. 36 hours of breakers. thunderous breakers up to 40

feet. during the king tides tomorrow, the first one up until sunday, that's when they climax. this one is going to possibly bring us flooding from 5:00 to 9:00 around the bay shoreline. east bay valleys got a chance of rain 8:00 until 2:00. just mainly cloudy the rest of the day. we'll top out in the upper 50s. peninsula, a little dry day. better chance of showers. 10:00, noon through 2:00. then this evening, we'll be mostly cloudy and mid-50s. the south bay, we've got a chance from 8:00 to 2:00 with temperatures rising up to 59. but under mostly cloudy skies falling back down to 55 by 8:00. so keep the umbrella handy. you'll need it from time to time today. here's sue. >> we have high winds in effect there with the big rig on its side there. that's crazy. that's the winds we were looking at yesterday. it's calmer this morning you but still they're calling for the high-profile vehicles to take extra caution on all the bay area bridges. about a 35-minute ride westbound on 580 over the altamont pass

where we have high winds there as well. we've got this minivan stuck in water. flooding at northbound 87 the ramp to northbound 280. they hope to have a tow truck on scene there within ten minutes. thank you, sue. new overnight, china has plans to talk trade with the u.s. a chinese government official will visit washington at the end of the month. china and the u.s. are trying to resolve a costly trade war. both sides have imposed tariffs on billions of dollars in goods. last month, president trump and president trump xi ping agreed to -- the government shutdown is entering the 27th day. it appears there's no end in sight. >> yesterday, house speaker nancy pelosi asked president trump to postpone his state of the union speech set for january 29th. she cited concerns about security with the secret service and the department of homeland security affected by the shutdown. republicans are dismissing her suggestion, calling it a ploy to deny the president of the stage.

that and be cautious if you come across that chance of rain. we'll talk more about rain in the forecast coming up. >> thank you, mike. today marks 25 years since the northridge earthquake in the san fernando valley. a study a year later actually put the death toll at 72 because it includes heart attacks. it cost $25 billion in damage. the earthquake buckled overpasses on three freeways including interstate 5 and 10 trapping drivers under tons of concrete rubble. new this morning, a prosecutor says san francisco police discovered, quote, lots and lots of explosive making materials in the suspected in sunday's explosion in the so ma neighborhood. that's according to the examiner. 37-year-old mustafa mack faces seven felonies in connection with that blast that shattered windows on tabor place near second street. nobody was hurt. he pleaded not guilty to all

charges. east bay commuters coming to san francisco will notice new billboards addressing human trafficking. alameda county launched a new campaign yesterday. the billboards are a reminder that the bay area is a hotspot for human trafficking. posters on bus shelters offer help to possible victims of labor and sex trafficking. >> when we say human trafficking, they think they're women from asia, mexico or central america. we know that children and people that live in our streets and our communities born and raised here are being victims of human trafficking. >> the district attorney says her office has prosecuted more than 650 defendants in the last 12 years over human trafficking-related offenses a free training program in san francisco will help chariot shuttle drivers find new jobs as muni operators. about 300 shuttle drivers will lose their jobs next month when chariot closes. mayor london breed announced a program called citi drive.

it's a three-week course planning them for the commercial driver's test. they need that to drive a bus. it can help drivers like jim dover secure jobs with muni. >> i just bought a car. i figured we renewed our contract with one of our clients. i figured i was secure. >> it will provide on-the-job training with muni so chariot drivers continue to get paid during the transition. new developments involving spacex and its plans to take people to mars. elon musk's company says it will build test versions of the mars spaceship in south texas instead of the port of los angeles. that decision comes days after the company announced massive layoffs. spacex says prototypes of the star ship will be assembled at the texas facility to streamline operations. the hawthorne headquarters will continue to handle the development of the spaceship. a tech giant and major drugstore chain are teaming up

alternative way to get there. it will take you forever. the scenery is magnificent. let's take a look at what's going on back here. let's look at our scenery in ran raphael. it's damp like all of the streets are this morning. we've got breezes early. those will taper after the morning commute is over. showers and thunderstorms, have to keep those in the forecast. i did downgrade the storm to a 1, light. it will be cooler with lingering showers across the north bay. our last chances for rain, friday and sunday. look at what's going on with the highs today. when you step out, you'll notice it's pretty mild. it's humid and temperatures about just like this. we're not going to form much today. w're going to be in the mid to upper 50s. notice you see yellows and some oranges out there. you could have a locally intense shower and even a thunderstorm but the best chance of that across the north bay. tonight, 10 degrees cooler. mid to upper 40s. mild for this time of year. here's a look at live doppler 7. you see the rain scattered across the north bay.

that thunderstorm that came ashore heads towards ukiah. it will put heavy rain in and dwus i winds. be ready for that. here we are at 7:00 in the morning. the north bay. after 7:00, the rest of us get a chance of scattered showers. they're intense through the lunch-hour. in the evening commute, notice the yellows are gone and almost all the greens are gone. overnight, keep an eye on the north bay for the scattered showers. my storm concerns, hydroplaning and minor flooding on the roads today. everything else is almost off the board. my seven-day forecast. chance of showers tomorrow mainly across the north bay. keep it a 1. it's dry everywhere saturday. sunday, the rain comes in during the morning and into the early afternoon hours. hopefully we'll squeeze out sunshine late in the day. you'll get all the sunshine you want. sue? >> this is in the east bay. west oakland. ten-minute delays due to a equipment problem on the train in the east bay direction. jubs a heads-up there.

golden gate bridge looking good. it is windy coming off the waldo grade. be careful across that span there. in fact, all bridges here in the bay area have high wind advisories at this hour. good news headed towards newark. eastbound 84 to southbound 880. that ramp has just been reopened. we had a big rig flip over on its side about 10:30 last night. they finally got it cleared and traffic is getting by just fine. thank you, sue. 49ers receiver marquise goodwin is opening up about why he missed two games in the second half of the season. he and his wife morgan lost their twin boys 19 weeks into the pregnancy. this is the second time the pregnancy ended prematurely. goodwin scored an 83-yard touchdown and collapsed in the end zone and this was the game following the loss of their first child. >> the couple talked about the difficult situation on their youtube channel. >> we appreciate y'all for

there are multiple reports of slides and downed trees. this was the scene overnight on highway 35 at bear creek road. >> pg&e crews are working to restore power to thousands of customers this morning. most of the outages are in the north bay. number 5, expect more delays at sfo today due to the weather. here's a live look at the airport. airlines canceled 156 flights yesterday. >> number 6, a blizzard warning in effect for the lake tahoe area. travelers advised not to make the drive to the sierra today. chains are required for drivers on interstate 80 and highway 50. number 7, this is how some kids are dealing with the floodwaters caused by the storm in napa. amber payne has aideo of her kids on a jet ski turning floodwaters into their own personal lake. was that their mom swearing at them, get off the jet ski and get back in here? >> i think so. i have to listen closely. she's saying something after it too and i bet it's gold. i need to have all of it. >> yes.

right now at 5:30, the aftermath from a powerful storm. this is video from the east bay overnight. our amy hollyfield is live with what it looks like this morning. >> knee-deep water in the south bay. the rush to save this home from flooding. clearing downed trees. a similar scene across the entire bay area. if you're waking up to us and everything is fine at your house and the electricity is on, you're in good shape. >> yeah. not everyone so lucky here. obviously this morning we have a lot of folks without power still. a lot of effects from

yesterday's storm. >> strong storm. lived up to its billing, absolutely. not overhyped whatsoever. >> you told no lies mike nicco. >> i came this close to making it a 4. when i looked over. good news in that respect. there would have been more damage. let's take a look at what's going on today. i dropped it down to a 1. because we have light to moderate showers, they could be locally intense. the thunderstorm threat moved mainly to the north bay. overall breezes are fastest now. those will taper around 9:00 or 10:00. marin head lands, golden gate bridge, about to get wet in the north bay. that thunderstorm is falling apart. winds are starting to show a tendency to lighten up a little bit. concord and half moon bay. 29 and 25 are the fastest breezes. that was supposed to be walnut creek. but it's 280, 217. low to upper 50s. be in the upper 50s about all day with a chance of showers. unlike yesterday, where it built all day, today it's going to

decrease all day. sue. >> take a look outside. this was last night over the santa cruz mountains. highway 17. they had rockslide, which is a bad place to be when the weather is bad. they have one lane shut down and that is in the southbound direction from los gatos up and over the summit. just a heads-up in the southbound direction. one lane still closed. take a look at emeryville building up nicely with the headlights headed in the westbound direction towards the bay bridge -- pardon me, the macarthur maze and the bay bridge toll plaza. moving at the limit there. a 45-minute drive out of central valley over the altamont pass with high winds there. they've pushed this car out of the water that's standing there. but be careful, north 87 to north 280, guys? >> thanks, sue. one of the consequences of stormy weather, flooding. this morning, we're seeing issues in the east bay. >> amy hollyfield is live in concord. amy?

>> reporter: hi alexis. concord got a little more than an 1.5 inches of rain in 24 hours. this intersection was an example of getting too much water too quickly. it looks good now. but take a look at this flooding. this is the intersection of port chicago highway and kinnie boulevard in concord in front of the military ocean terminal. it looks like a lake instead of a road. the mount diablo creek spilled over its banks. the water came up to the curb. it was dark. this water can be hard to see and can be a surprise which is exactly what officials were warning drivers to look out for and not drive through. we didn't have any reports of anyone getting stuck or floating away in this. now it has receded. the water is gone. let me show you a look at the creek. it has receded. it is looking very calm now. it is staying in its banks. it couldn't handle that much rain at once. you can drive through here today without any problems.

reporting live in concord, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> thank you, amy. in the south bay, crews worked quickly to help save a home from flooding in saratoga. it was nearly knee deep. the homeowner says a nearby creek was recently plugged leaving any overflow with nowhere to go. she says the 6-foot crawl space beneath the home was flooded. >> this is nothing compared to the back. the back is like a huge lake. everything is -- because the water, everything is draining from that side, the creek plugged. it just all behind that wall. >> the homeowner spent the last 23 years at her home and she has never seen anything like this before. >> that is crazy. >> definitely is. crews will be cleaning up another big mess by falling trees left in the bay area. >> crews in mill valley were cutting up this huge downed tree which fell durgt storm. it crashed into a home and

crashed -- the tree narrowly missed the people inside. good news, nobody was hurt. a different story in the east bay. a man died after a tree fell on him in oak lands. this happened near macarthur boulevard last night. officers think the victim lived along the side of the freeway. cal trans owns the land so it's in charge of finding out what caused that tree to fall. a fallen tree caused this collision in san jose. a couple was driving along bollinger road and hit a tree that had come down. it happened before lawrence expressway. that couple is okay. in marin county, downed power lines have closed part of lucas valley road. it's between big rock trail and nicasio valley road. the damaged lines may not be repaired until later today. the santa clara fire department showed this video in saratoga. the falling tree brought down

power lines and a transformer. they're warning the public to stay away from falling power lines, they could be energized. a busy intersection went dark after this ford went into a light pole. this was at capitol expressway and a born road. the driver was taken to the hospital and the traffic was tied up there for more than two hours. about 35,000 pg&e customers are in the dark this morning. the north bay is one of the hardest hit areas, as of 3:30 this morning, 7,000 were out of -- 17,000 were without power in the north bay. 7200 in the peninsula and the south bay 6400. travelers warned to expect more delays at san francisco international airport today due to the weather. 477 flights were delayed yesterday. that adds up to more than

one-third of the average daily passenger flights at sfo. if the wind and rain aren't enough. now comes huge waivers. a high surf warning in effect. breakers could peak between 40 and 50 feet high. >> the coast guard is urging everyone to sty off the water and away from the coastlines unless you have to. a storm like this creates hazards, like high winds, low visibility, choppy seas and very dangerous for people who don't have to be in this environment. >> the coast guard says anyone heading out on the water should file a float plan and double-check your safety gear. >> let's take a look at some of the issues we're dealing with. we have the creeks in the north bay and some of those streams overflowing their banks until 8:15 this morning. you can see from just around guerneville, petaluma, that area, south santa rosea the warning where the breakers will be. 40-foot waves. that could cause localized flooding. because today is a first day of

king tides and we have the high surf warning, we have a coastal flood advisory. at 7:42 this morning, the tide hits 6.3 feet at the golden gate. it will take longer to filter to the east through the rest of the bay. expect flooding from 5:00 to 9:00. wouldn't be surprised i should say -- i wouldn't be surprised if it's issued again tomorrow. here's a look at walnut creek and 680. looking drier and drier as more and more of us get out there panned get what's wet on the roads. there's a few standing areas. that's early. periods of showers if you're in mass transit and on the bay, it will be breezy this morning. a little bit of caution there. definitely not a repeat of yesterday. chance of showers in the north bay. the best chance of thunderstorms until 2:00. one more push around 6:00. here's a look at the east bay. the best chance from 10:00 to 2:00. then we'll be mostly cloudy. best chance of showers from 10:00 to 2:00 also and we'll hang out with mostly cloudy conditions in the mid to upper 50s. that's where we are right now.

but just about all areas have a chance of rain and high elevation snow. let's look at what's going on as far as your travel today. still the blizzard conditions. just don't do it. slippery tomorrow as the snow will still be on the roads. saturday is your best bet. sunday there will be more snow and slippery conditions. we'll have the worse conditions until noon today. that's the blizzard. that's where the winds are blowing 60 to 70 to 80 miles per hour with blinding conditions. we still have a chance of 1 to 3 feet of snow through 4:00 tomorrow morning. that leads to avalanche danger through 7:00 tomorrow morning also. alexis? >> thanks, mike. a group of oakland teachers is planning to hold a major disruption tomorrow. this is video of a similar protest last month where students and teachers marched to oakland city hall. the group of teachers called the wildcat underground say they are protesting the slow pace of contract negotiations between the oakland unified school district and the teachers union. organizers say teachers and students from several schools will gather at oakland tech at
