it blocks lane number 2, second lane from the left. there are several cars involved here. it's stacked up to the 280/680 interchange. guys? >> thanks, sue. things are getting interesting in washington this morning. we have breaking news on that front. we're getting new reactions to a potentially bombshell report that claims president trump directed his long-time attorney, michael cohen to lie to congress. >> in just the last few minutes, house democrats promised a full investigation. this is all happening in response to a buzz feed news report which claims mr. trump told michael cohen to lie about negotiations to build a trump tower in moscow. they said president trump supported a plan to visit russia during the presidential campaign and personally meet with president vladimir putin to kick-start tower negotiations. this morning on gma chief legal analyst dan abrams explains what it means. >> weave talked about the line for obstruction of justice. it's not enough, for example to

fire james comey. what would be witness cam terg? this is easy. if he told michael coe hone to lie to congress, no one would say that's not obstruction of justice or witness tampering. that would be a crime. >> gma will have much more on the story at 7:00 a.m. after abc 7 mornings. oakland teachers planning a sickout this morning. >> amy hollyfield joins us live with more. amy? >> reporter: hi, reggie. teachers will rally here in front of oakland tech high school this morning. they will do that an hour and then march to the administration building. the last time they did this, they rallied in front of city hall. that was last month. the places are changing up a bit. but their message in the same. they want smaller classes and bigger paychecks. the two sides are far apart. the district offered a 5% raise over the few years. teachers asked for 12%.

their walkout comes as a massive teacher strike is going on in l.a. the state superintendent acknowledges this is a huge issue. >> this is a trend. what's happening in l.a. and likely to happen in oakland has happened throughout the nation. teachers are using the strike as a way of making their voices heard. you know, i know a lot of teachers. they don't want to be anywhere but in their classrooms. >> here's a quote from the press release about the walkout. this day without educators will give a small preview of what an actual open-ended strike would feel like. we are doing this to demonstrate to ousd that we are ready to strike. school is in session today. substitute teachers have been hired. no day off for students. reporting live in oakland, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. thank you, amy. it's day 28 of the government shutdown. tsa workers got a chance to tell governor newsom about the

struggles they're dealing with bus of it. >> i had to put a for sale sign on my house on sunday. >> tsa screeners like miguel have been working without pay. the governor met with workers at the airport and vowed to help them get the money they're owed. >> from a moral perspective, there's no debate on this issue. it will blow back aggressively on the department of labor. >> newsom is encouraging furloughed workers to apply for unemployment benefits through the state. airports are also helping their security workers. the alameda county food bank has donation bins at the airport. they have a plan to provide no interest short-term loans to federal airport employees at the airport there. federal workers can get into the san francisco zoo for free. you need to show your common access card or federal i.d. there are a lot more offers like that to help the federal workers

during the shutdown. for more resources, go to abc7news.com or find it on our abc 7 news app. police are investigating three robberies within two weeks at the fremont hub. in the most recent attack on monday, police say a driver pulled up to a woman in the parking lot and demanded she hand over her purse. he hit her with a pipe when she refused and took her purse. another man who said he had a gun. stole grag ranfragrances from a and stole perfume from another store. they do not believe the robberies are related. police have not made arrests. >> santa rosa police are investigating a mass tire slashing after more than two dozen people found their cars leaning on punctured tires. it happened in the junior college neighborhood in the northern edge of downtown. police tell the press democrat they received 25 reports of slashed tires just yesterday. police believe it happened at night. neighbors are looking through

wayel protections. the team is putting the blame on the strict curfew rules. the mercury news reports the 49ers expect only a $750,000 profit this fiscal year from events at levi's stadium. that includes this year's college football playoff national championship. the team says it should be making $5 million a year from concerts, beer festivals and other sports. city officials say blaming the curfew is, quote, simply irresponsible and deflects from their management performance. b.a.r.t. construction in downtown san jose set to begin next week. the mercury news reports work will gina long santa clara street between south market and third streets for the next seven weeks, crews will bore into the ground for geotechnical and utility data. at least one lane of traffic will be open in santa clara. drivers should expect delays and major construction isn't

change your password again after a massive data breach involving hundreds of millions of e-mail addresses. nearly 773 million records, including e-mail addresses and passwords, were exposed in a data breach publicized by security researcher troy hunt this week. according to hunt, the files were collected from a number of breaches and uploads to a cloud service called mega. that platform has since removed the data. according to wired magazine, this type of breach happened before but never on this scale. some facebook employees have been caught leaving five-star reviews for facebook's newport al device. "the new york times" discovered the reviews and they have been removed. but the reviews could have boosted the portal's ratings. facebook specifically ordered employees not to review the device. amazon bans people from reviewing their own company. also new at 6:00, costco might be jumping into the streaming video game. according to a new report,

costco discussed a stream service targeted toward, quote, average americans. conservatives and middle america people who feel their perspectives are ignored by other streaming services like netflix. no word when the new service would launch. a pair of minor earthquakes on the hayward fault rattled the east bay. scientists at the berkeley seismology lab have been tracking the shaking while quake experts at the u.s. geological survey are being furloughed because of the government shutdown. for now, berkeley is doing more of the analysis and providing that information to the public. the real concern is about the next big quake on the hayward fault. one that could rival or surpass the 1989 loma prieta earthquake in damage and lives lost. seismologists say it is coming. they don't know when. but they know usgs expertise will be needed. >> and not really staffed sufficiently if we have a big event. they would have to cally.

for tesla is going to be difficult. he broke the news in an e-mail from musk. it was posted on the company's be website. he had expanded the workforce in 2018 by 30%. musk previously stated they had 45,000 employees. a cut of 7% is 3,150 people. the company would retain the most critical temps and contractors. this comes after tesla delivered more than 245,000 electric cars and suvs last year. nearly as many as all previous years combined. the company still fell short of the goal manufacturing more than twice that. musk said in the e-mail to those departing, thank you for everything you have done to advance our mission. i have deeply grateful for your contributions to tesla. we would not be without you today. tesla is going to be opening low. they were down more than 6% pre-market trading.

reporting live in san jose, matt keller, abc 7 news. in the north bay, family and neighbors mourning the loss of a man killed during wednesday night's powerful storm. >> authorities say he was trying to escape a falling tree near laverne and northern ferndale avenues when he was struck by a van. the marin chp says darren melvin and some neighbors were watching for emergency crews to check out downed power lines. but then strong winds and rain caused a nearby tree to crack. as melvin ran, a neighbor driving a van accidentally hit him. >> our kids go to the same school and i know that he was a good fit for the school, the whole family was. >> he was a great guy. >> the chp says the driver who struck melvin is cooperating. drugs and alcohol have been tree service companies around the bay area are getting a lot of calls to clean up toppled trees. an0-foot spruce tree narrowly

fallen davis police officer natalie corona. the 22-year-old rookie was shot and killed a week and a half ago. she was investigating a car crash when a gunman started shooting. officer corona was the only victim and the shooter shot himself after a police standoff. the service for officer corona happens at 11:00 this morning at the activities and recreation center on the uc davis campus. it is open to the public. after, there's going to be a 40-mile procession to officer corona's hometown of arbuckle. expected back in court today. lawyers for the two want charges brought against the warehouse owners, as well as oakland firefighters and police officers. al men a and harris claim they knew about the unsafe conditions in the building but did nothing. prosecutors want presidet judge to issue a gag order to stop anyone connected to the case from talking to the media. prosecutors claim it's the only way to keep potential jurors unbiased for the upcoming trial

morning. scattered showers possible this afternoon. as we head through the south bay where we'll see the most rain or excuse me. the most sunshine. look at the low 60 5ez from noon through 4:00. our best chance of rain is right now on a widespread nature. it becomes scattered this afternoon. for most of us, a dry day. how is the commute, though? >> depends where you are, as usual. we have a couple trouble spots. let's look at the south bay first. we had an accident just in the clearing phases. this is the northbound 101 shy of alum rock. the backup remains there. you can see all the way back now towards the expressway. give yourself plenty of extra time or you may want to take an alternate route, highway 87 would be good for you. then we have this accident in pleasant hill. southbound 680 near monument. it's involving several cars blocking a lane of traffic. you can see it's stacked up into 242. back towards martinez. southbound 680 drive times of 20 minutes from concord into walnut creek.

jose's iconic orchard supply hardware sign is solved. it has been recovered intact. police delivered the vintage sign to the history of san jose preservation center yesterday. it vanished in early november. it turns out the man who took the sign did it out of concern it would be scrapped. >> he saw the demolition work and was concerned that he better get that sign before it gets accidentally broken or tossed into a bin. so his intentions are good. >> history san jose will restore the sign and install it at the history park. the stores were closed last year. it was founded in san jose. new at 6:00, a russian startup with a plan to ruin the night sky. >> oh, boy. it's called star rocket. it wants to launch glowing billboards into outer space by 2021.
