theatre in san francisco. and i'm about to talk to the creators of the tony award-winning musical "come from a how the tragic events of 9/11 inspired a musical about hope and kindness. >> ♪ tell yourself, "you're just dreaming ♪ ♪ that means he'll forget..." >> i'm talking to irene and david. the two of you wrote "come from away." for folks who have yet to see this, how would you explain it to them? >> "come from away" tells the true story of when thousands of passengers -- almost 7,000 people on 38 planes -- were diverted to this small town in newfoundland when the u.s. airspace was closed after 9/11. and the people of newfoundland gave them everything. they opened their homes, they opened their hearts, and they made lifelong friends. it's this incredible story about >> i got to ask you, as a husband-and-wife creative team, how does that work? [ laughter ] >> it can be really hard, and it is not for the faint of heart. but it is -- it's pretty amazing

to create something with someone who you love and know that you're both focused on the same thing and know that they're gonna be honest with you. >> mm-hmm. >> i don't think there's a single word in the piece that we both didn't work on. >> one of those stories is of beverley bass. >> mm-hmm. >> we met captain bass on september 11, 2011. and we talked to her for hours. it's just an incredible story of a groundbreaking woman whose life changed on that day. >> i was actually flying from paris to dallas. we were over the middle of the north atlantic, and somebody came across that radio frequency and said that the world trade center had been hit by an aircraft. and about 20 minutes later, we got the second notification that the second tower had been hit. >> then, you landed in gander. >> we did. >> in newfoundland. >> we had people from all overry spoke all different languages. >> refugees, people coming back from vacation, people starting college. and they were all stuck on the

tarmac. >> they're just sleeping everywhere. they were on the fire station, you know, floor, they were in churches, schools. and then, of course, they eventually ended up in people's homes. >> and not only did the people of gander decide to let them off of the planes, which they did not have to do, they let them into their community buildings, and then they said, "you know what? that's not even good enough. you're not comfortable. come into our houses so that we can make you feel better during this terrifying time." it's just an amazing story of how smart you can be by being kind. >> ♪ something in the middle of nowhere ♪ >> i would like to think that i was always a very good person, but today i live so differently. and it's because of the way we were treated. and the question i always ask myself is, "what would the ganderites do?" >> ♪ do i hear that i go and i'm like, "you gotta see this, you guys!

>> fitness is more than just moving. i don't teach people or train their bodies anymore. really, i'm training people's minds. ♪ the best tip i can give to anybody who's, you know, don't want to go to the gym, don't want to push weights, don't want to sit around a bunch of sweaty people [chuckles] in a regular gym. i get it, i get it. what i think is best for most people is to just connect with

the community around them. i'm gonna show you five basic moves -- and all of us trainers do about five -- a squat, a lunge, a push, a pull, and a floor move -- just five. if you can get those five in, really success, you've done it. you don't have to do anything else -- that's it. we're gonna get on the ground and do some push-ups. and everybody knows how to do it, a push-up. you can do them on your knees, you can do them on your toes. they're a win-win, right? you've got shoulder stability, you've got chest, you've got back. and really, guys, it's all about teaching our friends at home about how to get fit without needing anything at all. you don't have to do the same thing over and over. maybe you go high-low, contralateral push-ups. maybe you do a push-up arm lift, if you want to get fancy. maybe you're like, "you know what? i'm just doing it on a knee." so, you guys show me what you got, and let's check a lot of shoulder stability. not for everybody, but why not work up to this? listen to this. look at this. let me see it. so, she's stabilizing with

one arm, engaging the core, and just challenging the body a little bit. it kind of plays with the brain. we are creating new neural pathways when we do stuff like this. the one tool that you need -- super simple -- is a band. you can buy it at a walgreens, you can buy it at target. they're like 5 bucks. so, grab your band. super light. packs nicely. here we go. we're gonna do a squat, step out. [ exhales sharply ] and pull. 3...2...1. nice job. now you've got your pull. you've got your heart rate going up, core is engaged, glutes are engaged. this is just a win-win all over. we're gonna start with a forward alternating lunge. guys, let's start with the right foot forward. and then we'll work on progressions and alternatives. you're rock stars. let's show the people how it's done. so, if you want to watch leah here, she's keeping her knee behind the toe. she's keeping her spine stacked. if you can just pay attention,

take your time, and watch what's going on in your body. bam. perfect forward alternating lunges.your body will tell you what to do, right? you've been sitting at the desk a lot, maybe doing a lot of linear movements. this twisting is awesome. still with the rotation, adding in a stretch. it doesn't have to be fast, guys. it's up, and push. that's how we do it out in the bay. squat is a staple for all personal trainers. and every group fitness class, i guarantee, is gonna incorporate some type of squat. so, go ahead and sit your booty back, like you're sitting in a chair, and come up. this is super simple. now, for those of you who have si chairanlisten, is is ing to b doing for the rest of your life. now we're gonna do a variation on the squat. all right, let's see it. nice and low and deep. alternating front snap. [ exhales sharply ] good. pushing it out. >> [ exhales sharply ] >> again, you don't need any tools, you don't need a machine.

you just need your body. number 5 -- core. very basic move. we can keep it super simple. so let's do the simple version and then we'll show some variations on it. ready, guys? okay, let's get down on the ground. we're gonna start with a basic crunch. just simplifying it. good. crunching, try to work those lower abs. it can be slow. sometimes slow is even better. so, let's do some variations on the crunch. clarence has got alternating hand to foot, tap, really working the obliques and the lower abdominals. and miles always got this creativity going. lookit, we've got all the way around, working all of the abdominal muscles. nice work. >> thanks. >> beautiful. nice way to stabilize that leg. and this can help you learn how to get out of that hip flexor, too. and we've got a full sit-up. now, the full sit-up has gotten a bad rap over the years. there's nothing wrong with this.

really deeply, deeply resonates. ♪ >> de and i started the college of adaptive arts when we were working with another organization with children and realized, at the age of 22, they were aging out of a lot of programs. so we decided to start a program for those that were out of the children's system, 23 and up, as more of a conservatory of maybe performing arts -- music, drama, dance, film. the first day, we had no one. >> we opened our doors. >> it was "teacher work day." >> yeah, no one showed up. >> and then, the second day, we had one. >> yep, and by the end of -- that was a three-week workshop, one class, and we had 12 students in the summer of 2009. >> now we have easily 100 students per quarter. we're definitely using every square inch of the space that we have, so we're looking to expand. >> my experience with my sister, angel, who's almost like my

twin, really played into the need for services when they became adults. and so that really brought home the fact that there really needs to be more out there for adults to authentically continue to learn and become the best versions of themselves. >> and it's wonderful because one of the things that connected deanna and i is i have a daughter with special needs. so we thought, "well, let's get together and talk to the families and students and see how we could put something together for them so that they have that next step. >> ...what i'm saying. do you guys remember the warm-ups that we do, where we say "unique new york"? >> yeah. >> stuff like that? >> this is a unique model. really, no other model that we can find... >> right. >> ...exists, doing exactly this, which is bringing that larger, more community-college model to the adults, with distinct diploma tracks and credits that they earn, with a structure and a style... >> and graduation ceremony... >> ...of accreditation. >> ...and credits. >> yes, yes. >> yeah. we like to say that we'd like to

become the special olympics-type model for education. so it's just a lifelong learning space for students and adults that are continually hungry to learn. >> community health partnership, a consortium of community clinics, we are neighbors with caa. and every day, when i come to work, i find a group of students anxiously waiting for the doors to open. honestly, what i see is this excitement and joy and glee, waiting to get into class. caa makes me feel that there is an organization that has brought a population up to the level where everyone should be. so kudos to them. >> whoo! [ indistinct shouting ] >> yeah! whoo! >> cisco has supported caa for about five to six years. cisco has a ton of parents of special-needs kids at all ages and all capability levels.

so, i have three kids -- a 10-year-old, a 7-year-old, and a 4-year-old. they're all special needs of some shape or form. so, for me personally, while it's really important to live in the moment, when you're raising any kid, especially a special-needs kid, it's nice to know that there's organizations like this in the future, that can support us as a family and my sons, if, in fact, we need that when they get to that age. >> my relationship with caa came about because my brother is a student at caa. and i was able to see how he was engaging and benefiting from the program, and so i got passionate about the cause. i supported the cause, and i got cisco involved. and so caa provides this really supportive place where my brother john is able to actually pursue his passions. and he's super active in the sports program, he's been active in the arts program. and it just -- it adds a depth to his life that's really powerful. individual donors can make a big

impact, and corporate donors can, of course, really move the needle on the organization. and so i view it as, you know, a rewarding outlet for my creative and altruistic passions, because i can see the difference and i can see the impact that i personally can make and the organizations i'm involved with can make. >> no, you spent a whole weekend with me! >> we've been working with caa for about four years, i believe. city lights theater company is a live theater company, so we provide a venue that's a live theater for them to hold their audition workshops. and then, twice a year, they have a showcase. >> i'm sorry... >> my bug spray. >> ...my bug spray didn't work. >> after watching them, they're not disabilities. it's just a different way of working. they're able to do things. you just have to provide the right tools for them to do it. if you're an organization who has the opportunity to work with caa, i'd say, "do it." >> when you're being worked on, like, you can already feel the knots, like, loosening up. so that's, like, kind of the immediate feedback that you get. and then afterwards, you're a little sore, but within the next two days, you kind of, like, get that range of motion again. definitely helps me be able to put in 100%, every time i go into practice, because just knowing that i'm well-prepared and that i've already done my part in taking care of my body, making sure that it's recovered well... >> to get ready for our meet, we're gonna work on being more powerful, being more explosive. that's what we're gonna do off the block. >> i came to cor about four years ago. i had a lot of inflammation in my shoulder, and then i went to john, and he really helped me get back, and it was better than before. working out, lifting all these weights definitely strengthens you, so you feel much better in the water. and having that extra muscle really makes you faster, and that's really improved over the time i've been at cor.

>> all right, taro, come on over here. how are you feeling today? >> i've been okay. >> so, it's a bit of a long story. last year, i broke my knee, and i had to be sedentary for, i don't know, three or four months, and i basically lost my mobility and lost my strength and everything. and i really needed to go through physical therapy, all that. but i wasn't able to recover as much as i wanted to, and i figured i needed to try personal training. i was walking in a very strange posture, and it was probably putting a lot of pressure on my left knee, and that basically caused a stress fracture. >> all right, go ahead and step to the right. and st tleft. good. just like that. good. his stance, when he would stand in front of you, was staggered, and he had his shoulder elevated and leaned forward --

you know, just from the body compensating. and so we look at him today standing, and he is upright and his feet are not staggered anymore, and he just looks a lot more confident, and so that has been just incredible. and him also being able to raise his arms much higher than he used to, have more flexibility there. he's expressed his ability to be able to drive a lot better and to be able to walk a lot farther with his daughter, which was something he really wanted to do. and i feel, what's important and special about taro is his mind-set. you know, he's motivated, and he's positive, and, you know, the mind is very strong in that way. and if you believe it, i really do think you can achieve it. >> this is probably the best decision i've made this year. i'm really glad that i'm here. i was a little bit shy and didn't want to come to, you know, a gym like this, but it really opened up something for me. so i'm very glad that i made this decision.
