for a short bit, the moon turned red. just after 8:30 p.m., they aligned. the sun, earth and moon all in a row causing the moon to turn red. >> that was unbelievable. like i literally felt like i was watching a movie, like somebody just pulled a fake image background. it was unreal. >> reporter: the earth casting a shadow over the moon is what makes the moon look blood red and clouds finally getting to see the super red wolf moon. >> i am enamored. i didn't know what i would see, but it was kind of fantastical, if that makes sense. >> reporter: for those who came out it d. at the space and science center in oakland, one of several viewing parties around the bay area. what did you see? >> a lot of red. >> reporter: astronomer gerald mckeegan gave a lecture to the hundreds who came out. astronomers have been able to

predict lunar eclipses 2000 years. tonight's celeste ral event may not have created new science, but it created new fans of science. >> to me it is an extraordinary event, to pay attention when mother nature is putting on a show. >> reporter: now, it's called a super moon because tonight's full moon was at its closest point to the earth making it look bigger and brighter than normal. it's called the wolf moon because that is at name native american's gave to january's full moon. the next super blood wolf moon over the bay area will be in 2029. in oakland, uncer, abc7 news. >> thank you. if you want to see more of the blood moon we have video of it on our abc7 news facebook page. >> as he mentioned, rainy cloudy weather impacting the bay area for most of the day. take a look. you can see the gusts there from atop our mount tam cam from earlier today.

there were strong waves in santa cruz. >> let's check in with meteorologist drew tuma for more on the weather cast. >> tonight we're still tracking some scattered showers out there. we're not done with the storm system quite yet. live doppler 7, i want to zoom in to a couple spots. from novato, san rafael over to hair ward and san ramon right now. into the south bay we have one downpour that moved out of willow glenn moving into edenville. there are pops of yellow. even to mount hamilton, once you get higher vegass and colder air, the white you see on live doppler 7 could be a few flakes flying in our hills. the wider picture had a line of showers move through earlier this evening. now they're widely scattered. so forth next four hours, we're going to keep the storm impact scale intact for scattered showers, even the possibility of some wind gusts near 30 miles an hour. and there is the isolated chance you could see a couple of hail storms pop up within that

beating of an 88-year-old grandmother. >> you may recall the terrible attack on -- that happened earlier this month in the city's visitacion valley neighborhood on the elderly woman. abc7 news reporter cornell barnard has more on the 18-year-old arrested for the crime. >> they are just hearing about the news themselves about having a suspect in custody. >> reporter: the family of 88-year-old yik oy wong reacting to word an arrest is made in her brutal beating and robbery. >> there is certainly relief that if there is somebody who had caused harm to their grandma, that this person might be able to cause harm to another person. >> reporter: the s.f.p.d. sayser committing another y. detailsf thatrime are unr.he ogina pole sketch of th suspect. police believe he beat wong the morning of january 8 at a park in visitacion valley before breaking into her home nearby. >> i'm just glad that a suspect

has been apprehended. this is one of the most heinous crimes you can do to -- something like this to a senior, it's something that should be unheard of. >> reporter: wong's family said she remains in critical condition with a shattered face along with a broken spine, hand and ribs. the crime shook the community and a safety forum was held on saturday. police assured neighbors they have increased patrols. >> anybody who comes to our community and does something this violent on a senior, on a child, we are going to find them. >> reporter: grandma wong's family said there are signs she is improving. >> she is reacting to family members on their visits, slight improvements, but they're very, very hopeful about what they're seeing. >> reporter: and they continue to pray for her recovery. the 18-year-old suspect remains here in county jail. he denied our request for an interview today. in san francisco, cornell barnard, abc7 news. >> the san francisco police officers association was

offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in this case. there's been no word in that reward will be given out or not. now, as we mentioned, police have not released many details about the arrest of the suspect. in the meantime, a gofundme page for wong and her family has raised more than $9,000 so far. we have a link to it at our website, abc7news.com. >> this is day 30 of the government shutdown. a live look right now at capitol hill. congress is on recess until tuesday and there's no sign of the shutdown ending after democrats turned down a compromise offer from president trump yesterday. meantime, today mr. trump took aim at house speaker nancy pelosi and san francisco. he tweeted that nancy pelosi has behaved so irrationally and has gone so far to the left that she is now officially become a radical democrat. it says she is so petrified of the lefties in her far at this that she has lost control. by the way, clean up the streets in san francisco. they are disgusting. speaker pelosi responded by

saying, 800,000 americans are going without pay. reopen the government, let workers get their paychecks and then we can discuss how we can come together to protect the border. new at 11:00, san francisco mayor london breed also weighed in tweeting back at mr. trump, we are cleaning up the streets just like speaker pelosi is cleaning up after the mess that is your presidency. she's getting mixed response from supporters and people pointing out that many city streets are still dirty. >> all right. tomorrow, of course s martin luther king, jr. day, there are lots of events planned in the bay area. >> cal trans will be running its traditional celebration train that takes people to the celebration in san francisco. it's free and starts in san jose, but you have to register in advance. the march is planned in san francisco and there are several other celebrations going on for the civil rights icon. his son is encouraging people to give back to the community. >> my mom often said it really is a day on, not a day off. so although it's a holiday, which means maybe kickback and relax, it really is more of say day we should be engaged in

it is a burglary with a strange twist. san mateo county sheriffs have released this photo of a burglary suspect who released a live feed of the event on social media. hassan in palo alto went to a home in wood side and confronted a victim inside. she grabbed the victim's cell phone and began live streaming, shedding her clothes as she walked out into the backyard. the victim managed to lock her

out and call the sheriff's department. >> if you think that was bizarre, a pair of suspected crooks didn't get to finish their lunch after being arrested while dining in san francisco. a highway patrol airplane followed the suspects to this taco shop you see here in the sunset district on friday. we're looking at video shared by the chp. the chase began when officers took a report about a stolen credit card in sausalito. now, that sparked a chase in san rafael, but officers decided to stop their pursuit on the golden gate bridge. even though the ground chase ended, the chp airplane kept following those suspects. >> new at 11:00, six years ago, a single mom from palo alto put dres shean te sn eeuhaan sewing . ab newudn he >> reporter: for single mom whitney, it was sink or swim from the beginning.

you to the golden gate bridge camera. we still have wet pavement on the roads tonight. where we saw the rainfall today, it was light in nature, but a quick hitting downpour did add up pretty quick in napa. about 3/10 of an inch there. san francisco close to a quarter of an inch, less than that in oakland. san jose almost 2/10 of an inch. livermore coming in with 15/100 of an inch of rain. temperature wise, we are quickly thawing. that cold front moving through, behind the cold front we have cooler air working in. so our numbers are quickly falling into the 40s at this hour. part of the reason why we're cooling off pretty quickly, we have a stiff breeze in a lot of spots. gusting to 28 in half moon bay. 24, current wind gust is 28 in novato. the winds remain pretty active over the next couple of hours so we continue to have that wind advisory in effect. this lasting until 4:00 early monday morning. we're at times we could see winds gusting close to 45 miles an hour, but after 4:00 a.m., the winds are going to relax. so the storm impact scale will

keep this in for the next four hours or so as the system begins to depart. so we have those scattered showers right now. the winds could be active. we have had reports of hail earlier this evening. not out of the question another shower could drop some quick-hitting hail as well. winter storm warning still in effect in the sierra until 4:00 tomorrow morning. still talking about above 6000 feet. we could still pick up one to 2 feet of snow once the storm is totally revved up tomorrow afternoon. so keep our eye on that. when we're talking about overnight lows tonight, it will get chilly. it will remain pretty windy. we see temperatures in the upper 30s to mid 40s as our storm kind of exits the region. we do have another coastal flood advisory in effect tomorrow morning. it coincides with our highest tides all year. the king tide. so high tide in san francisco right around 11 in the morning so we could see again minor flooding in our low-lying areas. the 12-hour day planner on your monday, look at this. we are mainly dry. could see a coastal sprinkle

there was a happy ending when a dog owner was reunited with her pet at fort fun aniston this weekend. >> check it out. san francisco fire tweeted out this these photos of the rescue of a black chihuahua mixx that goes by the name of duck. little dog got stuck on a cliff for 26 hours. luckily duck was spotted by some hang glideers who contacted emergency services. he was delighted to be back with his owner. >> all right. time now to talk some sports. i was thinking when did we have the oldest quarterback match up in super bowl. >> now we're going to have one of the oldest and youngest. it's incredible. super bowl liii will feature the bay area quarterback showdown. age ain't nothing but a number for tom braid

tie game again. the patriots win the toss in overtime. so, a touchdown ends it. brady goes to work. three big third down conversions, two of them to redwood city's own julian edelman and burkhead gets it in from two yards out to win it for new england. 37-31 the final. brady's 9th super bowl, most of any player in league history. >> the odds were stacked against us. it has been that way for a while. it certainly was this year. and never started off so slow. and like i said, the last four games have been our best games. >> it hurts everybody. we knew we had the opportunities this game and this season. we put in the work. we know this can be a building block. it can be something that carries us in the future. i mean right now it's the end, but hop is jing o a longime. >> in the nfc title game nevada's jared goff way off rhythm by the incredible crowd

noise in the super dome. drew brees to jared griffin gave the saints a 13-0 lead. the rams came back. goff finds tyler hig by and it's a three-point game in the third. there was some serious controversy tied in the final minutes. no call on this pass interference by the rams coleman. that would have given the saints first and goal, and an easy field goal to win it. they would have controlled the clock. head coach sean payton said the nfl called and apologized, but the damage was done. this game goes into overtime. he makes a 57-yard field goal to send the rams to the super bowl. 26-23. goff is going to the big game. >> definitely went through a whole gamut of emotions when the field goal went in from excited to, you know, emotional to just overwhelmingly happy and very excited, man. get to play in the super bowl. we earned it. we deserve t. >> sean, what explanation did

the entire story. abc7 reporter arielle reshef has the story. >> reporter: fury over this viral encounter. a group of students from a catholic school in kentucky appearing to face-off with native american nathan phillips at the foot of the lincoln memorial friday. one of the boys seen here staring stoically at phillips as he beats his drum. the students on a school trip to washington, d.c. to attend the march for life. initial video of the incident spreading like wildfire. the student sustaining swift backlash. but longer videos posted online show much more of what happened before the exchange. both groups apparently riled up by a few self-described black israelites hurling slurs at the native americans and the teens. >> that's right. >> reporter: in the new footage, phillips seen approaching the

crowd of boys as they chant their school letters. phillips telling the local o diffuse the tension by intervening and this clip purporting to show the member of the indigenous people's group confronting the boys. >> moments later this boy tries to seem to keep the confrontation from escalating in response to the online vitriol, the father of one of the teens coming to their defense saying, to present children in a false light to advance your agenda is a new low. arielle reshef, abc news, new york. >> oakland teachers expected to return to work after some of them staged a one day walk out on friday. the teachers are locked in negotiations with the district over pay and class sizes. they are seeking a 12% pay raise over the three years and the district is offering a 5% bump over three years. union leaders told abc7 news a strike could happen next month if no progress is made in

contract talks. meantime, in los angeles, negotiations there are ongoing to try to end the teachers strike. marathon bargaining sessions have been taking place at city hall this weekend. more than 30,000 teachers went on strike on monday, demanding higher pay, smaller classes, and more support staff. the l.a. school district is the second largest in the country with about 640,000 students. this is the first strike in 30 years. >> a nightmare flight for some united passengers headed to hong kong. the plane took off from newark, new jersey, but a medical emergency caused it to divert to a canadian forces base in the province of new found labrador. they got stuck for 19 hours because of mechanical problems caused by the frigid temperatures. passengers then got frustrated with the various explanations given for the delay. >> pilot was so sick of being looked at as a guy that's lying to the passengers. he flat out said, look, here's the ceo's e-mail. oscar nunez.

e-mail him. >> united sent another plane to get the 250 plus passengers who had gotten stuck and took them back to newark. the airline has apologized. alma daetz less than 48 hours after britain's prince philip crashed his car, the 97-year-old royal was spotted driving without a seat belt. the duke of edinburgh was photographed driving a new land rover near the queen's estate. seat belts are required on public roads in the u.k. police say they are aware of the photos and that suitable words of advice have been given to the driver. prince philip was in a collision with another car on friday. he was not hurt, but two women suffered minor injuries. >> oscar nominations are just days away, but we may be getting an idea of one of the best candidates for best picture. green book is a road trip drama about an african-american pianist played by oakland native ali and his italian american driver in the '60s. last night it won the top honor at the producer's guild awards. it also won the golden globe for

cousins got a little post game love from clai and steph in his season debut friday night. steve kerr said things went about as planned. he expects to increase cousins' minutes monday night. steph admits at the beginning of the game, a little rough. >> to be honest, it was the first four minutes he was on the court, i think we called one play and i think we messed it up. so it was a lot of -- i think we have chemistry in terms of caring for each other and trying to bring the best out of each other. but the chemistry in terms of what we're doing every possession will continue to get better. >> we'll have to ease him back in. we want to bump up his minutes as we can when we can, but it will take some time. if the game called for it, maybe, maybe play him a little bit more, you know. if there was a blowout either way, maybe try to get him a few minutes down at the end just for conditioning purposes. >> alexander was not doing so
