thousands of federal workers. >> the toll is visible at airports with more security screeners staying home. experts warn they may be nearing a breaking point. >> reporter: the tsa telling abc news they are in unchartered territory as the number of employee callouts keep increasing because of the shutdown. tsa having contingency plans to keep this from repeating in more airports. >> demoralizing. you go to work and you expect pay for hard work. you wake up and -- >> reporter: 8% of tsa employees did not show up for work. mostly for financial reasons. hitting hard as the largest airports like new york's jfk and chicago's o'hare. >> how long can i go without a paycheck? i'm in no man's land.

>> reporter: an echo of the 800,000 workers like the coast guard or others furloughed or working without pay. president trump offering what he calls a reasonable compromise to end the shutdown, stemming protections for undocumented immigrants in exchange for billion dlarls ffor the border . >> the fight stretches on, tsa vowing they will not compromise security standards. >> we can't expect tsa be enduentured servants. a couple weeks from now, i expect it to go exponential and that's going to be a shutdown of the airline system. >> reporter: it could have a compounding effect as the unpaid workers are faced with the reality of mortgage payment, rent and other bills.

>> thank you. overnight, president trump thanked federal employees working without pay. >> they try to strike a deal without democrats, the proposal is striking criticism from conservatives. >> for weeks, a stand off. president trump won $5.7 billion for a border wall. this weekend, the president changed things up. he gave democrats something to chew on, if they give him wall money, he gives the dreamers money. they call it a nonstarter. it's difficult for him to portray as a compromise. the president is telling allies, i'm not giving anything up. >> he almost signed off on a deal that would have extended funding for the government without money for a wall. the base revolted. he saw the images on tv and talk rao.conservative congressmen ta

>> not sure how you guys do this. >> i -- here we go. >> hundreds of united passengers are back in new jersey after a nightmare flight. >> a real nightmare. their flight from newark to kong was diverted because of a medical emergency. they sat in the plane 14 hours, unable to leave because no immigration officials were available. > e united brought them back. a kentucky family is pleading for the public's help on a young mother missing two weeks. she was last seen january 4th leaving a bar in richmond with three men. her mom says the mother of four facetimed her to tell her she would be home in the morning. police questioned and released two men she was with that night.

a figure skin champion committed suicide a day after he was suspended. he won the pair's title in 2011 and 2012. until his suspension, he was going to compete in next week's figure skating championship as a coach and congressmen tater. usa today reports three reports of sexual misconduct. he denied the allegations. four men are under arrest for this car bombing in northern ireland. the irish republican army placed the attacks. the bomb was inside a pizza delivery van. it shows a group of young people walking by the van before the blast. he was called upon quote, reckless. two people dead after an earthquake in chile. thousands are in the dark.

we're back with this explosion in downtown jacksonville, florida. yikes. that was the old city hall. it took just seconds, as you saw, for the nearly 60-year-old building to come down. the demolition was about a year in the making. no final decision yet on what is going to replace it. yeah. wow. a man looking forward to his florida vacation was not expecting anybody to try and spy on him. >> he says he found hidden cameras in his airbnb rental and the company has taken action. >> abc's eva pilgrim has the details. >> reporter: it's not what any vacationer wants to see, the moment he spotted these black boxes inside the airbnb he was renting, he knew something was not right. >> i was not sure what they were, so i unplugged them and looked them up and found out they were hidden cameras. >> reporter: he booked the

apartment for the week in miami. he pulled the memory cards from the cameras, taking them to the miami police department. >> you should be comfortable whenever you rent an airbnb or hotel or whatever it may be, that you are not being watched in the privacy of a bedroom. >> reporter: the miami police are investigating, they are in the process of gathering evidence. airbnb saying they require hosts to clearly disclose security cameras in writing on the listings. this host has been removed from our community. they are looking to refund him for the reservation. this is not the first time hidden cameras were discovered inside a vacation rental. one couple finding pinhole cameras in their florida airbnb townhome in 2017, this time hidden in a smoke detector over their bed. police eventually finding two cameras recording both audio and hd video in that home. >> thank you. that is just so disturbing and

this morning on "world news now," the super bowl match up is set. >> an epic sunday night leading the patriots to the chiefs. the los angeles rams going all in defeating the new orleans saints. we have all the highlights. deep freeze danger. temperatures are tumbling across the northeast into the south. feels like temperatures dropping to 30 below in parts of new england. trapped on the tarmac. passengers on a united flight were stuck on a plane 13 hours after it was diverted to a remote airport. today, they are back to square one on their journey to hong kong. what went wrong? >> did you see the show in the sky? the super blood wolf moon made an appearance overnight, leaving people moon struck. it is monday, january 21st. announcer: from abc news, "

shutdown. over the weekend, tsa held a previously planned job fair in bloomington, minnesota. more than 400 people showed up to fill just 40 openings. it was staffed by tsa employees. the applicants said they weren't put off because it will end soon. turning to the russia investigation. president trump's lawyer, rudy giuliani is pushing back alleging the president told former fixer, michael cohen to lie to congress. rudy giuliani is acknowledging the president and cohen might have discussed cohen's testimony. >> he says what if they did? david wright has the details. >> reporter: the president's lawyer insisted his client never ordered his previous lawyer to lie to congress about negotiations to develop a trump tower in moscow. >> categorically, it was tell the truth. >> reporter: that issue is at

the heart of a disputed report by buzzfeed news that claims the special counsel has evidence president trump directed michael cohen to lie to congress. the special counsel's office made a rare public denial about the report. the white house disputes it as well. rudy giuliani says trump may have spoken to cohen about his testimony, but didn't hint cohen should lie. >> it's not possible. >> let the conversation thinking this is what the boss wants me to say. >> not possible. >> reporter: negotiations over trump tower moscow ended in january 2016 before the 2016 presidential primary. later admitted that was a lie. in the guilty plea, cohen said the negotiations over the moscow property continued as late as june 2016 when trump was the gop nominee. giuliani suggested negotiations may have gone on longer. >> according t

illegally. they named him the top suspect of a shooting death of two women and a couple outside reno. authorities say they have enough evidence to bring charges against him for the murders in the coming days. a number of deaths stand at 85 with dozens still missing. the victims were collecting gas at the site of the leak. someone turned the trickle into a guyser. they knew about the leak four hours before the explosion. today is martin luther king jr. day. in his hometown in atlanta, a ceremony is being held to recognize the renaming of confederate avenue to united avenue. it's part of a yearlong push by residents to get the name changed. countless other ceremonies will be held nationwide. dr. king was born 90 years ago. a north carolina cat is back on solid ground after spending a week in a tree. the owner says the cat freed herself chasing a squirrel.

florida police officers are defending this video that shows a 2-year-old girl holding her hands up in the air. people were outraged when it first appeared on social media. body cam footage shows the officers were trying to comfort the little girl. she was mimicking her parents who were suspects. two men were arrested for theft. at least two people are dead and dozens injured at a fire at a ski resort in the french alps. they were forced to jump out of windows to escape the flames. the blaze started shortly before dawn. >> the resort is known for high profile guests. no word on what caused the fire. hundreds of united airline

passengers are back where they started after a nightmare flight. >> this sounds brutal. they were trapped on a runway in canada. hours ago, they made their way back to where they started. maggie rulli has the story. >> reporter: passengers are reliving an utter disaster. >> the worst experience i ever had. >> reporter: he was trapped from new jersey to hong kong. the plane diverting to canada, due to a medical emergency, then getting stuck because of the windchills. passengers say even the crew grew frustrated by the different reasons given for the delay. >> ended up being looked at as lying to the passengers who flat out said, look, here is the ceo's e-mail. e-mail him. >> reporter: all 250 plus passengers trapped inside,

the man on record as being the oldest in the world has died. the 113 eer-year-old passed awa yesterday in japan. he officially held the title of world's oldest man since april. he was born july 25th, 1905. he attributed the long life to soaking in hot springs and eating sweets. i was not expecting the sweets part. his daughter said he tried to avoid stress. >> we are not avoiding stress. >> up here? no, no, no. we can't do that. >> are you soaking in hot springs? >> not too many hot springs in my life. >> me, neither. >> you? >> no. an 11-year-old is doing big things and making history as the youngest person ever to receive a full scholarship to a prestigious university. first, will ganss takes us up close to the super blood moon. what makes it super?
