by caltrans. this is from earlier this afternoon. chains are not required on 80 or 50. however, traffic is very slow on highway 89 heading northbound from tahoe city to 80 and truckee. drivers have also faced delays on 50 in el dorado county. two hikers from england are safe after a highway patrol -- after the highway patrol rescued them from the wilderness in yosemite national park. the men lost track of a trail during a snowstorm last thursday, and then spent the night in a crevasse near north dome. the chp helicopter launched and lifted each of them the safety after sunrise on friday morning. meanwhile, back east, this is the scene. people are digging out. temperatures, they're in the single digits with the windchill it feels like it's 20 below. the storm started blasting the region yesterday. it's so far blamed for at least five deaths. the frigid conditions also crippled air travel with hundreds of flights canceled again today. the family of an 88-year-old

woman severely beaten in san francisco is expressing relief and gratitude today. san francisco police announced an arrest in the case over the weekend. 18-year-old chianti gatran was captured friday after he committed another battery. they believe he beat yik oi huang nearly to death in a park in advicetatis visitacion valle. pg&e's pending bankruptcy could force the utility to end its fire management plan. the company has been blamed for as many as 17 devastating wildfires in northern california over the last two years. in response to the controversy, pg&e created the community wildfire safety program. now this program includes real-time monitoring of potential wildfires better vegetation management and coordinating response efforts. but now according to the chronicle, it's likely a

bankruptcy judge will limit pg&e's ability to invest in that program. there was a traffic mess this morning in dublin. sky 7 was over an accident on the southbound 680. this is just north of 580. two people were hurt, one seriously. taffic was backed up for miles. it did take a couple of hours for the chp to clear the accident and reopen all those lanes. commemorations are taking place all across the country today to mark the holiday honoring dr. martin luther king jr. dr. king's oldest son paid a visit to his father's memorial in washington and laid a wreath. later martin luther king jr. iii reflect on how his father's legacy fit into current administration policy. >> martin luther king jr. was a bridge builder, not a wall builder. martin luther king jr. would say

and check out this view of brilliant, bright sunshine in the western sky looking westward from emeryville. it's 58 degrees in santa rosa and napa. and concord and livermore. and from mount tam looking down on to ocean beach here. these are our forecast features. mild and sunny days lie ahead this week. it will be almost spring-like on friday and saturday, and there is no rain in sight for the next seven days. overnight, look for low temperatures to drop down to 30 in ukiah and 31 in lakeport. so those are the two freezing spots i was talking about. and it's going to be chilly in many other inland valley locations with lows dropping into the mid-30s. right around the bay we'll see upper 30s to low 40s. here is the view of what's controlling our weather for the next few days. this building ridge centered offshore will be the controlling factor, giving us sunny days for the remainder of the week. and certainly tomorrow, bright clear skies at 7:24 sunrise.

sunny and dry conditions through the day and the sun will set under clear skies tomorrow evening as well. moving along to pacific highs tomorrow 61 e, oakland. 60 at fremont. san jose, up in the north bay. we'll see 62 at clover dale, santa rosa and napa. antioch and fairfield about 58 degrees. it's going to be dry for the next seven days statewide. there may be slight chance of rain right up along the border between the northernmost part of california and southern oregon, but generally a dry week ahead. not only here in the bay area, but across the entire state. now our high temperature trend for the remainder of the week looks like this. highs on wednesday will be about the same as tomorrow. upper 60s to maybe 61, 62 degrees. on thursday, milder. mainly mid-60s inland. and friday, upper 60s to near 70 degrees. not only inland, but even some bayside locations like hayward will have a high of 67, 68 degrees. definitely getting milder as we get later into the week. here is the accuweather

it looks like sports betters are jumping on the new england patriots bandwagon yet again. the patriots listed as 1.5 to 2-point favorites to win the super bowl over the l.a. rams. in it didn't start out that way. oddsmakers initially had the rams as one-point favorites that quickly flipped in favor of new england. last time the patriots were a super bowl underdog was 2002 when they played. remember, the rams. the patriots won that game. for the first time in super bowl history, both starting quarterbacks are from the bay area. here is tom brady, who has been in it a thousand times it seems. this will be his ninth appearance. grew up in san mateo. went to serra high school. jared goff will be making his first super bowl appearance. he played at marin catholic before. he is now one of four quarterbacks who have gone to

sunday. harris was born in oakland to parents who were active in the civil rights movement. president trump visited the martin luther king jr. memorial with vice president mike pence today and tweeted it was his great honor. we are now in week five of the partial government shutdown. the president made an offer to democrats, and they say that isn't a real offer at all. the desperation now growing for unpaid federal workers. abc news reporter lana zak live in washington with more. lana? >> hi there, larry. the impact on the federal workers as well as the nation's economy on general. in fact, the s&p estimates that if this shutdown continues until friday, the impact on the u.s. economy will be that we will have lost $5.7 billion. when congress returns to work tomorrow, the two chambers will have different visions for how to end the shutdown. frustrating the 800,000 federal workers who anticipate missing yet another paycheck at the end of the week. >> they need to come together

house speaker nancy pelosi applauded san francisco values in response to a tweet from president trump. in the tweet yesterday, the president had attacked pelosi as a far left liberal. and at the end of the tweet he wrote, by the way, clean up the streets in san francisco. that i are disgusting. this morning pelosi was speaking at a dr. martin luther king day breakfast in the city when abc 7 asked her about the tweet. >> the president refuses to accept that we are the city of st. francis, make us a channel of thy pease where there is hatred, love, despair, darkness, hope, light. you know the prior goes on. i'm proud of our san francisco values. >> and pelosi added the real expression of faith is caring for the poor and needy. well, san franciscans are fiercely protective of their city. the gloves came off when the president called san francisco streets disgusting over the weekend. the same goes for the name.

for some, san francisco should not be called anything else. now last year we brought you the first survey about what to call san francisco. curtis spare is back with us with a look at what the nonlocals think about the name. first, thanks for coming in on the holiday. >> thanks for having me. >> let's get to the locals thing. 65% say san francisco should be -- >> san francisco. >> san francisco. that makes perfect sense. but a lot of people, and we had this at 46%, use the city. and living in the east bay, where are you going? well, we're heading into the city. that's a given. and 37% call it sf. how about the people not from here? >> the results from elsewhere show most people say san francisco. >> okay. >> but when we asked people from the uk, new zealand, australia and canada what else they call san francisco, the number one nickname after san francisco was san fran. and so we conduct a little bit deeper, and we discovered that about a quarter of these people

would continue saying san fran even if they knew it irritated us. >> especially if they knew it irritated us. >> such trolls. >> exactly. i'm surprised that frisco is not on the list of most irritating. or on this list at all, really. who is calling san francisco the golden city? 28%? where are these 28%. i'd like them to identify themselves. >> they're all over there or over there. the thing is that this is kind of the big issue of our time is treating people and places with the dignity that they respect and deserve. >> sure. >> and i think that that's what's lacking in this whole debate about what to call san francisco. >> what are the results from across the pond in the uk? >> the uk was the most proper, as you would expect. they're the ones most likely to say san francisco. they're also the ones who would course correct if you said hey, san fran is not cool. don't say it. >> so they would go with us as opposed to deciding what they

want. 24% would still call it san fran or frisco, even if it bugged the locals. which 24%? do we have a geographic location on that? >> when we looked and drilled down, we discovered that the people from australia and new zealand were the most likely to stick with bugging us, and stick with the trolling. the british were the most polite, and the canadians predictably were in the middle of that. >> we like the offkey. that's surprising. which name annoys you the most, and you can vote here. san francisco, frisco, or the golden gate city, and we'll keep this up for a few moments. your polling, ask one other thing, what they most associate with the bay area. this is a hot topic because we've had especially with prop c and the comments from the president and trying to get the streets cleaned up, a lot of tourists feel that it's not as welcoming in san francisco as it once was. some feel it's dangerous. >> you know, none of the

tourists or none of the people from our poll said anything about trash or homeless or anything like that. what they talked about was they most associated the bay area with our golden gate bridge, with alcatraz, with all the physical features. even the painted ladies in full house. they also associate san francisco with the lgbt community and the hippie counterculture. tech companies did not resonate as highly as this. i think when people come to san francisco, they're really taking in the natural beauty, and that's the thing that's most important to them. >> it's really more about the positives. so results to this moment, most annoying, 55% say frisco. i think we can agree with that. >> i too would hope i never hear frisco again in my life. i'm hoping perhaps president kamala harris makes a decree and we can set this behind us forever. >> we'll see in 2020. thanks for coming in. >> thankser for having me. >> larry.
